This converted chapel school sits in the beautiful rolling hills of the North York Moors and behind the well-preserved exterior lies a truly unique home. Set within acres and acres of private estate, you’ll find this country bolthole in a row of terracotta-roofed cottages dappled with ivy. Towering trees and manicured gardens surround the spot for a bit of away-from-it-all feeling. Yet, a fifteen-minute walk sees you at Sandsend beach where a coastal stroll has you in the centre of Whitby in forty minutes (subject to tides). If you want to stick closer to home, the estate’s grand hotel has an exceptional restaurant, a five-minute stroll away. Inside the cottage, you’ll find a striking sage-green living room that feels distinctly modern, despite the idyllic facade. It continues into the surprisingly spacious kitchen where you’ll find everything you need for self-catering. Out the back, you’ve got your own little patio for an alfresco tipple in the summer breeze to the sound of a babbling stream.

This brand-new home can be found on the outskirts of the characterful seaside resort of Whitby. Outside of the hustle and bustle in a quiet residential neighbourhood, with views of fields to the rear, it’s the best of both worlds. Outside there’s a town garden with a sunny patio for those morning coffees, and a glass-fronted balcony off the master bedroom that looks out over the countryside. Take the 5-minute drive into town for arcades and fish and chips or cross the bridge to the medieval streets of the East Bank and Whitby Abbey. If you’ve brought the dog, strap on the hiking boots and get out into the North York Moors National Park. It’s called ‘God’s Own Country’ for a reason.

From the balcony, you can see across the rooftops to the ruined abbey on the hill, famously part of the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. As is often the case with penthouse homes, the elevation also means that's there's lots of natural light too. The white walls and reflective surfaces work to emphasise this asset, which floods in through the skylight as well. The design in the living room is a quirky mix of vintage and contemporary, as seen with the tan leather sofas sitting underneath a grand chandelier. You'll find the kitchen to be decently enough sized for bouts of home cooking and there are no complaints about the minimalist bedrooms, either.

So, what's there to do nearby? Well, quite a lot as it happens. West Cliff Beach and the promenade are about five minutes' walk from the front door, while the famed Whitby Abbey and 199 steps are just over twenty minutes away on foot, crossing the River Esk in the process.

There's an airy and breathable feel to the home with the French windows that lead to your private outdoor patio and welcome in plenty of natural sea air. In the warmer months, have your morning coffee outside, or dinner and drinks starring the local produce you picked up during the day. Take a ten-minute walk to sandy Whitby beach, lined by independent shops, seafood restaurants, and traditional pubs that have made this little corner of England the national treasure it is today.

What’s more, you can even go on a ‘Dracula’ experience, reachable in just six minutes on foot from this home.

It stands on the edge of East Cliff, just a ten-minute walk from Whitby’s town centre and its narrow medieval streets lined with pubs, shops and comfy cafes. You can walk easily to the west side of town, where you’ll find the Blue Flag West Cliff Beach and its brightly coloured beach huts. Add in the wonderful Whitby Abbey and its rich history, and you’ll never be short of things to see and do here. 

The house itself is warm and welcoming, with heaps of space. It’s an excellent choice for a big group of friends or a couple of families travelling together, as there’s plenty of room for everyone. We love the balcony that opens out from the living room – it boasts gorgeous views of Whitby and its harbour, and is the perfect spot for a morning cuppa. Later on in the day, you might pick up takeaway fish and chips to unwrap on one of the picnic tables on the terrace. It’s a lovely way to round off a day at the seaside.

When it comes to sightseeing, make your way to the beach (a two-minute walk) for afternoons of fun in the sun, or stroll over to the West Pier – six minutes away – where you can have a go at the arcades and sample the local seafood restaurants serving up the catch of the day.
