This old dairy, set on the Burghley Estate, is a peaceful getaway for large groups and makes a pretty picture for small celebrations. Throughout the restoration of the dairy and its conversion into cottages, an emphasis remained on the history of this building, and plenty of the original features remain to make this a charming and comfortable stay. With two wings, it also grants everyone plenty of space, though the mezzanine bedrooms can only be accessed through several ground-floor rooms, which might not feel the most private. Still, it's a beautiful space, and the estate is within the Capability Brown Parkland, first landscaped in the early 1700s and still as lush and inviting, perfect for walks with the dogs.

From the moment you step inside, you'll be wowed by soaring double-height ceilings, vast windows looking out over the gardens, plus a beautiful blue kitchen that will get your culinary juices flowing.

Elsewhere, the ground floor offers a sociable seating area set around a woodburning stove, a separate snug for when you want some time to yourself, plus a bedroom with direct access to the outdoors. Make your way upstairs, and you'll uncover a further two master bedrooms with en-suites and far-reaching vistas over the surrounding landscape.

Step out through the chic Crittal-style doors to discover a beautifully manicured garden with plenty of outdoor seating for dining and relaxing. Make the most of the west-facing garden and jump in the hot tub for a soothing soak as the sun dips below the horizon.

Away from this spectacular home, the charming university city of Cambridge is under an hour's drive away. We'd suggest a self-guided tour of the colleges before heading downriver on a punt. And while you can do this on your own, we've seen too many people fall in, so we'd suggest hiring a pro punter to help you navigate the water. Nearby, Grafham Water offers more opportunities to get out on the water, either at the sailing club or the giant inflatable water park.

A Rose by Any Name

There's something undeniably idyllic about this cottage's location. Sitting alone within acres of Bedfordshire countryside, the River Great Ouse runs alongside the property. You can sit and listen to the peaceful sounds or spot the wildlife that calls the stretch of water home from the outdoor deck, which even has a jetty. If you want to add a touch of decadence, it's also possible to hire a private hot tub and enjoy the scenery surrounded by bubbles.

Heading inside the front door, you'll see that there's a distinctly rustic feel to the interior, particularly the brick flooring and inglenook fireplace holding a log burner. However, you'll also be happy to hear that the home was fully refurbished in 2021, which you can certainly see in the modern blue kitchen and cosy white bedrooms.

When the weather's on your side, there are plenty of walks to embark upon within Turvey Estate and the village itself — along with its pair of pubs, a butchers shop and a park — can be reached in just over a quarter of an hour on foot.

Within walking distance are the pretty villages of Harringworth and Bulwick; and for a variety of restaurants, cafes and independent shops, charming market towns are all within a 20-minute drive.

Sat within the grounds of a working farm in rural Oxfordshire, this cottage is as cute as a button. The interior has been fully modernised — save for the stone fireplace — although it still feels homely thanks to the rural artwork on the walls and the plush furnishings. Outside, a glorious leafy canopy provides cool shade in the heights of the summer and makes for an excellent spot to admire your idyllic getaway. You’ve an acre of grounds to explore and a Summer House for stolen moments with your favourite book plus a sunken trampoline for big and little kids alike. Yomp through the surrounding countryside, bask in nature at Draycote Water (a twenty-minute drive away) or visit the famous town of Rugby – it’ll take you no more than fifteen minutes by car.

Nestled along the River Nene, this Grade II listed building offers a tranquil escape in the heart of Oxfordshire. Right on the river bank, this traditional mill house dates all the way back to the 18th century, boasting plenty of English charm thanks to large bay windows and green gardens. 

Speaking of the garden, this is a lovely spot to enjoy your morning coffee and watch the swans glide along the water. Once you're feeling refreshed and ready to explore, head into the local village to admire the thatched-roof cottages and quaint churches, or take the dog for a walk through the rich woodland of Bernwood Forest. Of course, no trip to Oxfordshire would be complete without a trip to the prestigious Oxford Univeristy – the Botanic Garden in particular makes for a relaxing afternoon. 

However you choose to pass the time, you'll always have a cosy home to come back to. Summer evenings were made for barbecues on the patio, followed by a glass of wine around the fire pit. Part of Rectory Farm in the East Midlands (fifteen minutes from the lovely Market Harborough), this slick barn conversion is the epitome of luxury country living. Outside, you're surrounded by fourteen acres of rolling countryside, while inside, soft furnishings, mood lighting and striking original artwork create a cosy and relaxing atmosphere. We loved the folding glass wall in particular – it overlooks the landscaped garden, and on warm days, you can open the doors and bring the outdoors inside. Spend days roaming the grounds and finish the evenings with a board game or family movie night in the lounge. Your hosts have considered every single detail, and the list of mod-cons feels endless – we're talking a popcorn maker, electric blackout blinds, power showers, no less than four Amazon echos, two smart TVs with Netflix, an Xbox One (complete with games) and a super high-spec kitchen that has everything you'll need to rustle up a delicious dinner. During the winter, the underfloor heating protects toes from getting chilly, and there's a full summer kitchen with a gas barbecue and seating for eight on those long summer nights. And if you're worried about the strain all the gadgets might put on the environment? Don't be – the hosts have even considered that, and the whole home runs on solar power and air-source heating.

Footsteps away from your home, you have the perfect park for a chilled out picnic. And for day trips, Milton Keynes is about thirty kilometres away. One  can never be too tired of packed days, especially with the plush bedding at this home.

Through renovating this space, it’s become more of a modern cabin that just so happens to be in close proximity to livestock. The home is an alluring blend of rustic elements like the wood-burning stove and wooden beams, and modern fixtures like the sleek kitchen. Even though inside is where you’d want to be when there’s a bite in the air – how else would you warm yourself if not curled up with a good book next to the fire? – you’ll be hoping for agreeable weather so you can spend all your time outside. Not only is there a hot tub with your name on it, but dining, drinking, and snacking should be done alfresco whenever possible, in our opinion. For a compromise, you can always open the bi-fold doors whilst building puzzles at the bench-style dining table inside. 

If you’re around on Fridays, travel to the neighbouring town of Uppingham in time for their weekly market, and whilst you’re there you can also visit the art galleries and antique shops before grabbing a bite to eat. There are a number of more historical buildings that have been given a second life as wedding venues and are well worth a drive-by – Rockingham Castle and Castle View Farm & Stables are both five minutes away. Even better would be to hire, or bring your own, bicycles so you’re able to view these alongside other landmarks when making use of the many cycling routes around the area.

With a prime position on Dunstable's High Street, this apartment in a 19th-century building is a peaceful enclave away from the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Step inside and you're greeted by an interior dominated by cleansing shades of white and muted greys, with only the odd houseplant and piece of artwork adding a little colour and character. Stylish parquet flooring sits underfoot, while the glossy kitchen is a triumph of minimalist design.
