This old dairy, set on the Burghley Estate, is a peaceful getaway for large groups and makes a pretty picture for small celebrations. Throughout the restoration of the dairy and its conversion into cottages, an emphasis remained on the history of this building, and plenty of the original features remain to make this a charming and comfortable stay. With two wings, it also grants everyone plenty of space, though the mezzanine bedrooms can only be accessed through several ground-floor rooms, which might not feel the most private. Still, it's a beautiful space, and the estate is within the Capability Brown Parkland, first landscaped in the early 1700s and still as lush and inviting, perfect for walks with the dogs.

There's something undeniably idyllic about this cottage's location. Sitting alone within acres of Bedfordshire countryside, the River Great Ouse runs alongside the property. You can sit and listen to the peaceful sounds or spot the wildlife that calls the stretch of water home from the outdoor deck, which even has a jetty. If you want to add a touch of decadence, it's also possible to hire a private hot tub and enjoy the scenery surrounded by bubbles.

Heading inside the front door, you'll see that there's a distinctly rustic feel to the interior, particularly the brick flooring and inglenook fireplace holding a log burner. However, you'll also be happy to hear that the home was fully refurbished in 2021, which you can certainly see in the modern blue kitchen and cosy white bedrooms.

When the weather's on your side, there are plenty of walks to embark upon within Turvey Estate and the village itself — along with its pair of pubs, a butchers shop and a park — can be reached in just over a quarter of an hour on foot.

At every turn, this stunning home manages to surpass expectations.

In the ten acres of grounds surrounding the property, you'll discover a heated swimming pool, a barbecue, a huge alfresco dining area and manicured gardens where you can escape for a moment's peace. Say hello to the bantam chickens wandering about, too – they're sure to be firm friends by the end of your stay. There's even a games room so you can start up a table tennis tournament or practise your putting on the mini-green. 

When you fancy a day out, the stately home and gardens at Canons Abbey are twenty minutes away in the car, while the ears of motorsports fans are certain to prick up when they hear the journey to Silverstone's hallowed circuit takes about half that time.

Sat within the grounds of a working farm in rural Oxfordshire, this cottage is as cute as a button. The interior has been fully modernised — save for the stone fireplace — although it still feels homely thanks to the rural artwork on the walls and the plush furnishings. Nearby, Grafham Water offers more opportunities to get out on the water, either at the sailing club or the giant inflatable water park.

Part of Rectory Farm in the East Midlands (fifteen minutes from the lovely Market Harborough), this slick barn conversion is the epitome of luxury country living. Outside, you're surrounded by fourteen acres of rolling countryside, while inside, soft furnishings, mood lighting and striking original artwork create a cosy and relaxing atmosphere. We loved the folding glass wall in particular – it overlooks the landscaped garden, and on warm days, you can open the doors and bring the outdoors inside. Spend days roaming the grounds and finish the evenings with a board game or family movie night in the lounge. Your hosts have considered every single detail, and the list of mod-cons feels endless – we're talking a popcorn maker, electric blackout blinds, power showers, no less than four Amazon echos, two smart TVs with Netflix, an Xbox One (complete with games) and a super high-spec kitchen that has everything you'll need to rustle up a delicious dinner. During the winter, the underfloor heating protects toes from getting chilly, and there's a full summer kitchen with a gas barbecue and seating for eight on those long summer nights. And if you're worried about the strain all the gadgets might put on the environment? Don't be – the hosts have even considered that, and the whole home runs on solar power and air-source heating.

We love the period features at this home, although the low ceilings may not suit taller guests. Location-wise, you’re in the village of Deddington, where you can browse the antique shops, stock up on goodies at the bakery, and enjoy a pint in one of the local pubs after walking the dog. And if day trips are on the cards, Blenheim Palace – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is a fifteen-minute drive away.

The Charming Cottage

Nestled along the River Nene, this Grade II listed building offers a tranquil escape in the heart of Oxfordshire. Right on the river bank, this traditional mill house dates all the way back to the 18th century, boasting plenty of English charm thanks to large bay windows and green gardens. 

Speaking of the garden, this is a lovely spot to enjoy your morning coffee and watch the swans glide along the water. Once you're feeling refreshed and ready to explore, head into the local village to admire the thatched-roof cottages and quaint churches, or take the dog for a walk through the rich woodland of Bernwood Forest. Of course, no trip to Oxfordshire would be complete without a trip to the prestigious Oxford Univeristy – the Botanic Garden in particular makes for a relaxing afternoon. 

However you choose to pass the time, you'll always have a cosy home to come back to. Summer evenings were made for barbecues on the patio, followed by a glass of wine around the fire pit. Yomp through the surrounding countryside, bask in nature at Draycote Water (a twenty-minute drive away) or visit the famous town of Rugby – it’ll take you no more than fifteen minutes by car.

Footsteps away from your home, you have the perfect park for a chilled out picnic. And for day trips, Milton Keynes is about thirty kilometres away. One  can never be too tired of packed days, especially with the plush bedding at this home.

Once a stable yard, now comfortable accommodation for a family or group of friends, this home is an idyllic escape in the Leicestershire countryside. Set on a working farm surrounded by 80 acres of woodland and grassland, there is plenty of space to stretch your legs here. And when you’ve worked up an appetite, your host provides a generous welcome hamper filled with essentials and a few extra goodies. There’s a courtyard with garden furniture and a barbecue, but if it gets chilly, the sitting room is equipped with a wood-burning stove. With all ground floor bedrooms, the place is perfect for families. Two well-behaved dogs are also welcome to join in on the fun.

Situated in the middle of a working farm of 200 acres, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of rolling countryside from the delightful enclosed veranda. This property is perfect for those seeking a tranquil retreat while still being close to attractions and activities. The property is also equipped with wi-fi, parking, and a barbecue area with an open fire pit. Located in Rutland, guests are central to four market towns and just ten miles from Leicester city center, which boasts the National Space Centre. Rutland Water is only twelve miles away where you can sail, cycle, bird watch, fish and enjoy a super aquatic children's play area. There are many other things to do in and around Rutland such as exploring Oakham Castle, visiting market towns, discovering churches, exploring Barnsdale Gardens, attending events and festivals or sampling local food and drink.

The fact that you’re looking directly onto a meadow filled with sheep might tip you off that this home used to be a barn, but that’s about the only hint you’ll get. Through renovating this space, it’s become more of a modern cabin that just so happens to be in close proximity to livestock. The home is an alluring blend of rustic elements like the wood-burning stove and wooden beams, and modern fixtures like the sleek kitchen. Even though inside is where you’d want to be when there’s a bite in the air – how else would you warm yourself if not curled up with a good book next to the fire? – you’ll be hoping for agreeable weather so you can spend all your time outside. Not only is there a hot tub with your name on it, but dining, drinking, and snacking should be done alfresco whenever possible, in our opinion. For a compromise, you can always open the bi-fold doors whilst building puzzles at the bench-style dining table inside. 

If you’re around on Fridays, travel to the neighbouring town of Uppingham in time for their weekly market, and whilst you’re there you can also visit the art galleries and antique shops before grabbing a bite to eat. There are a number of more historical buildings that have been given a second life as wedding venues and are well worth a drive-by – Rockingham Castle and Castle View Farm & Stables are both five minutes away. Even better would be to hire, or bring your own, bicycles so you’re able to view these alongside other landmarks when making use of the many cycling routes around the area.

Here you’ll find more than just the promise of a good night’s sleep – with a dedicated desk space in each room, and lovely furnishings to boot, you can choose to catch up on work or simply enjoy some alone time here. Wake up refreshed and greet a new day with a cup of coffee in the sun-filled garden. 

Outside your front door, you’ll find yourself a ten-minute walk from Western Park, one of the most beautiful parks in Leicester, as well as a nine-minute drive from the National Space Centre – a perfect place for a family day trip.

Peaceful but still well-connected and with plenty of farmhouse charm and comfort, this barn – with a fire pit and a picnic table overlooking swaths of green – does pretty well for itself. Your host can also arrange a hot tub to take your stay to the next level.
