Say hello to the bantam chickens wandering about, too – they're sure to be firm friends by the end of your stay. While the whole place is top drawer, the highlight has to be the glass-fronted balcony, looking out over the pond. Sitting here as dragonflies dance over the water, you’ll fancy yourself a million miles away from civilisation. In fact, you’re just ten minutes from the hustle and bustle of Market Harborough and five minutes from the all-important local pub. As an added bonus, you’ve got the run of the estate’s verdant 14 acres, complete with a lakeside picnic area. You won’t want to leave.

This 19th-century Cotswold cottage is perfect for an idyllic escape to the country. With a private garden full of hidden nooks outside, and a cosy log-burner inside, you’re set for any season here. We love the period features at this home, although the low ceilings may not suit taller guests. Location-wise, you’re in the village of Deddington, where you can browse the antique shops, stock up on goodies at the bakery, and enjoy a pint in one of the local pubs after walking the dog. And if day trips are on the cards, Blenheim Palace – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is a fifteen-minute drive away.

Part of Rectory Farm in the East Midlands (fifteen minutes from the lovely Market Harborough), this slick barn conversion is the epitome of luxury country living. Outside, you're surrounded by fourteen acres of rolling countryside, while inside, soft furnishings, mood lighting and striking original artwork create a cosy and relaxing atmosphere. We loved the folding glass wall in particular – it overlooks the landscaped garden, and on warm days, you can open the doors and bring the outdoors inside. Spend days roaming the grounds and finish the evenings with a board game or family movie night in the lounge. Your hosts have considered every single detail, and the list of mod-cons feels endless – we're talking a popcorn maker, electric blackout blinds, power showers, no less than four Amazon echos, two smart TVs with Netflix, an Xbox One (complete with games) and a super high-spec kitchen that has everything you'll need to rustle up a delicious dinner. During the winter, the underfloor heating protects toes from getting chilly, and there's a full summer kitchen with a gas barbecue and seating for eight on those long summer nights. And if you're worried about the strain all the gadgets might put on the environment? Don't be – the hosts have even considered that, and the whole home runs on solar power and air-source heating.

This Georgian abode began its life as two 18th century coach houses and was expertly combined in the 1930s to create one impressive golf pavilion. Now a swish family home, the place is a seamless blend of contemporary design, plush materials and old-world charm. A sophisticated living space dressed in rich chocolate brown, features a huge open hearth and glittering chandeliers. Make yourself comfortable on the squashy Chesterfield as the more musically inclined member of your group provides the soundtrack on the piano. Outside, a glorious leafy canopy provides cool shade in the heights of the summer and makes for an excellent spot to admire your idyllic getaway. You’ve an acre of grounds to explore and a Summer House for stolen moments with your favourite book plus a sunken trampoline for big and little kids alike. Yomp through the surrounding countryside, bask in nature at Draycote Water (a twenty-minute drive away) or visit the famous town of Rugby – it’ll take you no more than fifteen minutes by car. 

Dandelions & Daisies

This beautifully renovated barn is situated in a stunning, secluded position on the edge of Long Itchington village in Warwickshire. Guests can enjoy uninterrupted views of the surrounding farmland from all aspects of the property. The village's pond and green are within walking distance, where visitors can find a pub for local beer and good food. The barn sleeps eight guests (maximum six adults) and features four bedrooms, including one en-suite bathroom, two en-suite shower rooms, and one family shower room. A walled, gravelled courtyard with a slate patio and lawned areas offers a relaxing outdoor space for guests to unwind. Families with children are welcome, with a travel cot, high chair, and stairgate available upon request. Parking for up to four vehicles is available, and there is WiFi throughout the property. A minimum three-night stay is required.

A Day in the Country

This old dairy, set on the Burghley Estate, is a peaceful getaway for large groups and makes a pretty picture for small celebrations. Throughout the restoration of the dairy and its conversion into cottages, an emphasis remained on the history of this building, and plenty of the original features remain to make this a charming and comfortable stay. With two wings, it also grants everyone plenty of space, though the mezzanine bedrooms can only be accessed through several ground-floor rooms, which might not feel the most private. Still, it's a beautiful space, and the estate is within the Capability Brown Parkland, first landscaped in the early 1700s and still as lush and inviting, perfect for walks with the dogs.

With honeyed stone walls and a Grade II listed status, this bronze South West Award-winning traditional stone cottage is quintessentially Cotswolds. The exposed beams and inglenook fireplaces showcase the building’s considerable heritage (it dates back to 1670), but you’ll find plenty of modern comforts here, as well as cosy styling that favours neutral tones and natural textures. We love that it’s a home for all seasons — stride out on blustery walks in the winter months, before coming back to underfloor heating, a wood burner and thick goose down duvets. In the summer, the British countryside is arguably at its best and here you get access to a large birdsong-filled garden with plenty of shady spots for a gin and tonic. Stargazers are in luck here as there are no streetlights in the local village of Southrop and the Milky Way shines extra bright. And of course, what would a country getaway be without a nearby pub? The Swan can be reached in about three minutes' walk, although the Victoria Inn takes half an hour in case you fancy earning your pint.

Shepherd's Flock

With a gothic spin, this stone-built cottage has become a Worcester favourite for a unique, romantic trip. Tiny but beautiful, it's bursting with period charm and features arched windows, exposed timbers, a statement fireplace and a luxurious clawfoot tub alongside quirky decorative touches. Outside, near a stream, seating allows for alfresco meals and sunset drinks in the hot tub, and the on-site orchard is ripe for fruit picking. Your host can also arrange for a private chef or measures to take the weekend to the next level.

Spread out across three floors in this modern townhouse. Unique wooden furniture imported from India adds a touch of elegance to the minimalist, white decor. Get together for movie night in the modern living area (there’s Netflix on the smart TV). Breakfast can be made that bit brighter by throwing open the French doors and letting the sunshine in. Or, take the whole show out to the patio on a summer morning. If the kids tire of playing in the Wendy House in the garden, there’s a play park just around the corner. Locally you’ll find a convenience store, café and gym. Walk a little further for a major supermarket, pubs and restaurants. Or jump in your car (there are four private parking spaces at your disposal, you don’t have to worry about parking) and you’re in the bustling heart of Reading town centre in just 10 minutes.

Teak On White

This beautiful home ticks every box when it comes to a romantic place to stay. It’s tucked away in the countryside – but close enough to pubs and restaurants to be practical – so the views are glorious. You can spend your time curled up in front of the log burner, or sipping champers in the hot tub on the balcony.

The house is an eight-minute drive to the town of Thame. It’s at the foot of the Chilterns, so if you fancy stretching your legs there are lots of walks for you to enjoy. Otherwise you can spend your time strolling around the town, shopping in the markets that are held several times a week, and admiring the medieval, Georgian and Victorian architecture. 

If you’re anything like us, though, you’ll find it hard to tear yourselves away from this home. Your every need is catered for here so you’ll be in the lap of luxury. Open up the bi-fold doors to the garden in summer and dine alfresco, enjoying the outdoor space. Soak away your troubles in the magnificent bathtub, before slipping between the softest sheets. You’ll never want to leave.

Welcome to a rural retreat that serves up not only the perfect idyllic location, surrounded by fields but also bags of style and comfort. There's nothing rustic about this place, with underfloor heating, window walls and a high-end kitchen and bathroom. A modern oak barn that feels private and secluded, it's the ideal space to get away from it all and enjoy a slower pace of life.

Start your day with coffee at the breakfast bar, and decide between a long walk in the Chilterns and exploring the nearby towns and villages (we recommend the market town of Thame, just an eight-minute drive away). But if you're here to go completely off the radar for a few days, that's fine too – there's nothing stopping you from lounging in the garden hammock all day, soaking in the private hot tub and streaming your favourite shows on TV. And as the sun begins to set, light the barbecue and enjoy your meal on the patio, before heading up to the balcony for the best view of the stars before bed.

While you’re here, it’s worth visiting the nearby towns of Malmesbury and Tetbury – and check your calendar, maybe your stay overlaps with the famed Badmiton Horse Trials or Tetbury Woolsack Race.

We love the original blue sash windows downstairs, but the real showstopper is the master bedroom, which is bright and cosy. Sink into the cushy armchair in front of the windows with a good book and cup of tea or relax with a soak in the roll-top, clawfoot bathtub. When the sun goes down, rustle up a meal in the quaint country-style kitchen – best enjoyed around the antique table set for two – then snuggle up in front of the wood-burning stove for a cosy night at home. Set on an organic farm with countless nature walks on your doorstep, this is a great spot to switch off and get in touch with nature. But if you're in the mood for a change of pace, Bath is just a twenty-minute drive away.

Escape the ordinary at this riverside hideaway for two, nestled in over an acre of secluded woodlands and yet just a twenty-minute stroll from the historic centre of Cambridge. 

With a wood-burning stove to nestle up beside and riverside views from the luxurious four-poster bed, the charms of this cottage cabin are hard to resist. 

On sunny mornings, open the French doors wide and savour morning coffees from the deck’s swing chairs as swans and rowers glide on by. Then up the ante and take to the river with one of the home's boats or kayaks – you've direct access to the river from the garden. 

When thoughts turn to food, closeby you'll find a coffee shop for lazy brunches (ten minutes on foot) and a riverside gastropub (three minutes on foot). Or head into Cambridge's centre along the river towpath (twenty-minute stroll or ten on bike) to dive into one of its ancient pubs before a mooch about the shops. 

Just be sure to make it home for nightfall to get toasty beside the chiminea (which handily doubles as your barbecue). As the stars twinkle overhead, there's no finer place to be.

This home is just as charming as the idyllic town in which it sits. The interior eschews minimalism for full-on floral patterns, characterful pieces of botanical artwork and vintage-inspired furnishings — can you honestly say you weren't happy to see that four-poster bed?

While the kitchen may be on the smaller side and lacks a hob, oven or cooking facilities, fortunately, there are plenty of restaurants in Woodstock, from a brasserie to less formal pubs. In addition, Blenheim Palace and its surrounding parkland can be entered in three mintues' walk from your front door. Further afield, the walking routes and viewpoints of the Cotswolds AONB can be reached easily in the car.

Thought to date back in part to the Tudor period and in part to the Victorian era, this old mill – located in a picturesque hamlet – was converted during the 1980s and takes care to retain much of the home’s period features including the mill shaft, which is a striking centrepiece to the living space. Multiple levels, some at split levels in this home reference the mechanical workings of the mill and intersect original mill components creating a wonderfully unique space. 

What’s more, the home’s owners have put a lot of thought into the environmental footprint of this home by upcycling furniture, using energy-efficient appliances, using a solar PV system, and including garden plants with low watering requirements. 

On sunny mornings, we would love to begin our days here with breakfast at the outdoor dining table in the sun-trapped courtyard before exploring the grounds at a leisurely pace. Wander the grounds’ passages, grassy knolls – that are home to birds and rabbits – fruit trees – bearing plums, pears, apples and figs – or rest beside the old mill pond which features Lily pads and dragonflies. 

In the afternoon, the large lawn is an ideal spot for a game of croquet, or why not head out for the day and visit Cheltenham, with the town centre just fifteen minutes away by car or the racecourse a short ten-minute drive away. Whatever you have planned for your visit, this home provides a truly amazing setting to stay in.
