Each room tells a different story, with unique finds ranging from antique plates to watchful bird art and even a crocodile in the downstairs loo – a model one, don't be alarmed! At every turn, this stunning home manages to surpass expectations.

In the ten acres of grounds surrounding the property, you'll discover a heated swimming pool, a barbecue, a huge alfresco dining area and manicured gardens where you can escape for a moment's peace. Say hello to the bantam chickens wandering about, too – they're sure to be firm friends by the end of your stay. There's even a games room so you can start up a table tennis tournament or practise your putting on the mini-green. 

When you fancy a day out, the stately home and gardens at Canons Abbey are twenty minutes away in the car, while the ears of motorsports fans are certain to prick up when they hear the journey to Silverstone's hallowed circuit takes about half that time.

With some parts believed to date back to the 12th century and a Grade II listing, it's not an exaggeration to say this home has some history behind it. We love the period features, such as the decorative stone fireplaces and wood panelling, and how they contrast with modern amenities like the sauna, karaoke machine and sleek kitchen. The bedrooms, although lacking some of the communal areas' charm, offer plenty of space – ideal for those who don't travel light. When you want to explore, you'll find the Ouse Valley Park directly behind the home, while the quaint village of Wolverton is at your doorstep.

900 Years of Solitude

Sat within the grounds of a working farm in rural Oxfordshire, this cottage is as cute as a button. The interior has been fully modernised — save for the stone fireplace — although it still feels homely thanks to the rural artwork on the walls and the plush furnishings. Add to that a sleek tub in the bathroom and relaxing should be no problem at all.

That's even more so the case on summer afternoons, as there's a garden with seating and a table. When you grow tired of idling in the sunshine — if you do — you're in an ideal spot for outdoor excursions. Right in the heart of Leamington Spa, this period apartment has been styled to perfection by a host who clearly cares about this space. With its own front door, it's on the ground floor and boasts high ceilings and tall sash windows. But the most striking thing about this luxurious home has to be the curated art (much of it picked up during the host's travels in Asia and North Africa), collections of books and the vast array of house plants. There's a contemporary kitchen and a designer dining table to eat, drink and be merry together, as well as two comfy bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. Just a few minutes walk from the High Street, you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to bars, restaurants and pubs nearby, and by day you can explore the town's pretty Regency streets, award-winning parks and independent shopping scene.

This old dairy, set on the Burghley Estate, is a peaceful getaway for large groups and makes a pretty picture for small celebrations. Throughout the restoration of the dairy and its conversion into cottages, an emphasis remained on the history of this building, and plenty of the original features remain to make this a charming and comfortable stay. With two wings, it also grants everyone plenty of space, though the mezzanine bedrooms can only be accessed through several ground-floor rooms, which might not feel the most private. Still, it's a beautiful space, and the estate is within the Capability Brown Parkland, first landscaped in the early 1700s and still as lush and inviting, perfect for walks with the dogs.

With a prime position on Dunstable's High Street, this apartment in a 19th-century building is a peaceful enclave away from the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Step inside and you're greeted by an interior dominated by cleansing shades of white and muted greys, with only the odd houseplant and piece of artwork adding a little colour and character. Stylish parquet flooring sits underfoot, while the glossy kitchen is a triumph of minimalist design.

Unspoilt countryside views, a wrap-around garden, wood burning fires and a games room – this home has everything you could need for a refreshing retreat in the Cotswolds. There’s also a heated swimming pool (available for an additional fee) and plenty of space across two reception rooms and the dining room for entertaining. Beyond this peaceful sanctuary, it’s just a ten-minute stroll into Hook Norton village where you’ll find two pubs and a village shop. There are great hiking trails and it’s just a short drive to Chipping Norton, Banbury and Soho Farmhouse.

This home is just as charming as the idyllic town in which it sits. The interior eschews minimalism for full-on floral patterns, characterful pieces of botanical artwork and vintage-inspired furnishings — can you honestly say you weren't happy to see that four-poster bed?

While the kitchen may be on the smaller side and lacks a hob, oven or cooking facilities, fortunately, there are plenty of restaurants in Woodstock, from a brasserie to less formal pubs. In addition, Blenheim Palace and its surrounding parkland can be entered in three mintues' walk from your front door. Further afield, the walking routes and viewpoints of the Cotswolds AONB can be reached easily in the car.

The building in which this apartment sits has had many functions in its near-two-century history — straw hat factory, corn merchants and estate agents to name a few. Today, however, you'll find a gloriously contemporary home that'll help you have an exemplary stay in Dunstable.

As you look around for the first time, you'll feel instantly at peace, something to do with the soothing greys used throughout. In the living room, a pair of purple sofas, parquet flooring and the chandelier make for a classy space in which to unwind, while the sleek corner kitchen is plenty big enough for cooking up special dinners.

As is the case with many period properties, there's an inordinate amount of natural light from the tall (triple glazed) windows — what else were you to do before the widespread introduction of electric lighting? — but you can also head down to the building's communal courtyard for your fix of Vitamin D, too. There's seating and a table, as well as free Pashley Cycle hire for the duration of your stay.

In local Dunstable, there are enough restaurants and cafes to keep you going, and there's a wealth of attractions that are easily reached nearby. London is only an hour away by train, but slightly closer to home, the Chiltern Hills AONB is rich with walking routes and historic sites — Ashridge Estate is twenty minutes' drive, for instance.

In the idyllic Oxfordshire village of Stanton St John, this red-roofed barn conversation is the best of country and city. It may be a rural base, but the charming centre of Oxford is a fifteen-minute drive away. Stanton St John has everything you need with a village shop and farm shop within a five-minute walk. Plus, meandering country walks are right on your doorstep. The home itself has been beautifully designed, with honey-hued stonework fitting in with the rustic aesthetic and a wooden pergola dappled with climbing plants shading the outdoor seating area. Just next to this there’s a big lawn which creates the back garden. Glass folding doors open up to blend indoors with outdoors so you can listen to the hum of bees and smell the flowering lavender from the breakfast table. The living room is a cosy snug, dominated by the plush velvet corner sofa as oil paintings look on. Come bedtime, bedrooms in Victorian floral splendour provide a plush place to lay your head.
