A truly stunning rural retreat, this home is sat on a hill overlooking the beautiful South Tyne Valley – just five minutes from Hadrian's Wall. Away from it all, yet within walking distance of the village pub, this place really has to be one of our favourites in this neck of the woods. A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we love the master bedroom's view and its lovely freestanding bath. Here you'll be in prime walking country, with hikes from your doorstep. And it's just a ten-minute drive to the market town of Hexham.

An eleven-minute drive to the bustling town of Hexham (or just over thirty minutes to the metropolis of Newcastle), this delightful cottage offers a secluded, rural retreat in the north of England. The setting is postcard-perfect – a white picket fence, traditional iron lamppost, and handmade stone wall surround this cute and cosy home. As you stroll down your paved entrance, you’ll notice your manicured lawn, flowerbed, and dining patio. On a sunny day, it’s the ideal spot for a picnic. Or on a chilly evening, it’s even better for stargazing with a hot toddy in hand. Inside, the living space is a welcoming mix of old and new. The stylish, light-grey kitchen is understated and modern. But we love the traditional countryside features such as flagstone flooring and a sandstone, inglenook fireplace with a wood-burning stove. You feel like you've gone back in time when you’re stoking the flames with the cast-iron tools, and adding fresh logs from the wicker basket. A wood-panelled turret library in the southwest tower is full of books and curiosities, and there are portraits of King James VI and the Kerr family dotted throughout the castle. Situated in a Grade II-listed building dating back to 1878, we can't help but swoon over this Alnwick apartment. It doesn't lack character, that's for sure – vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and antique knick-knacks like typewriters and old books are in abundance. We think it's the perfect blend of old and new, and nowhere is a better example of that than the open-plan living area. Bright and roomy, there's more than enough space here to spread out and get comfortable, whether you're tucking into a feast around the table or snuggling up in front of the fire. Cooking is anything but a chore in the glossy kitchen, and on rainy days, head up to the mezzanine for board games and billiards. There's also a communal garden for the summer months, where you can sip tea in the sunshine or cocktails at twilight.

And the location is excellent, too. Alnwick is as charming as they come, sprinkled with history and magic – no wonder they filmed Harry Potter here. History buffs are truly spoilt, with Alnwick Castle, Bamburg Castle, and Dunstanburgh Castle all within a short drive. Walkers and cyclists can pack a picnic and explore the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just a stone's throw away. And, if you fancy a day trip, you can drive down to Newcastle in around an hour, to immerse yourself in the lively city.

This home is a lesson in not being misled by first impressions. Yes, it's a stone cottage sitting in the middle of a farm, but step behind the front door and you'll find an interior that's as bright and contemporary as any.

Much of this is down to the bountiful amounts of natural light that streams through the glass doors and roof lantern, although the stark white walls and reflective wooden floors help, too. As well as a long kitchen finished in a muted grey, there's a stylish collection of furnishings dotted about the space, too.

However, it's not just easy on the eye. The wood-burning stove is lovely to have crackling away in the background during the chillier months, but there's a southeast-facing garden complete with a lounge and large lawn should the weather gods be smiling down on you during your visit.

If that's the case, you're spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor adventures in the nearby Northumberland Coast Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty, from Dunstanburgh Castle fifteen minutes' drive away to the sands of Embleton Bay only ten minutes away.

Just a five-minute drive from Hadrian's Wall, you'll be in an elevated position overlooking farmland. Inside, this place is as warm and cosy as you would imagine, with an electric fire in the living room and comfortable, modern furnishings. There's plenty of character in the form of vaulted ceilings and wooden beams, but there's nothing rustic about it. Its swish kitchen is bigger than most and features high-spec appliances. And if you're bringing your dog, you'll have a pretty, enclosed garden and a terrace for sitting outdoors in the summer. Here you'll be just a ten-minute drive from the market town of Hexham with all its shops and restaurants.

Make sure to pack your walking shoes as this section of Northumberland is rife for rambling. A ten-minute drive away lies Belsay Hall, Castle & Gardens, while waterfront pubs along the River Tyne are about a twenty-minute drive. But if you'd like to pick up the pace, Newscastle is reachable in thirty minutes by car –  an excellent option for day trips.

You'll find this home amongst the rolling hills in the sleepy village of Redpath. This stone cottage is classic with contemporary touches – making it an ideal base for those exploring the area. After a long day in the countryside, where better to relax than in front of the word burner? Or perhaps if the weather is on your side  –  you can unwind in the large private garden. Surrounded by nature, there's lots to discover – including mountain biking trails, cycle routes, and salmon fishing – all within the area. Situated on the edge of the Scottish borders – Edinburgh is less than an hour's drive away.

Within an hours' drive of Edinburgh, this countryside cottage in the Scottish Borders town of Greenlaw enjoys the best of both worlds. While you have the option to head to the city for the day, you can also stay put, enjoying moorland views and hill walks — Berwick-upon-Tweed and its coastline is only half an hour's drive away, too. The recently refurbished interior is a lovely place to return to after time spent out in the elements, with comfy furnishings positioned around the log burner sure to have you feeling warm and toasty again. Failing that, a long soak in the bathtub will do the trick. When the weather is favourable, you can take full advantage of the home's front garden surrounded by a stone wall, which has a pretty view of Scottish hillsides and a barbecue for those bursts of balmy weather.

Make the most of having your own personal watchtower where you can witness views of Budle Bay from different angles. We particularly adore the addition of a telescope, which will allow you to explore the distant scenery. Budle Bay has built a reputation as a bird sanctuary, so you might just spot birds like wildfowl and waders flying past. The home itself oozes a connection to the sea and the sandy bays that surround it – from the lush blues of the furnishings to the decorative touches.

Being located on the edge of historic Bamburgh, in the small village of Waren Mill, means you can enjoy long, quiet walks and energetic hikes through the countryside and along the coast here. A trip to Bamburgh Castle followed by a stroll along Bamburgh's sandy shores is a must. It takes five-minutes to drive here and you can easily while away hours marveling at the scenery. If you watched The Last Kingdom on Netflix, then you may just recognise the castle – it's pretty iconic to the storyline! Going slightly further afield, Northumbria National Park can be reached within thirty-minutes, and here you'll find beautiful walks amongst the lush countryside.
