Alternatively, make a beeline for Bamburgh – think sand dunes, snug eateries and legendary coastal fortress – or the historic market town of Alnwick, with its magnificent castle and gardens. On the way home be sure to stop off for beer battered haddock and hand-cut chips at The Pack Horse Inn, a popular pub offering locally sourced food and drinks. At the day’s end gather together on the sofas in the living room. Grab a bottle of wine and light the wood burning stove before putting your feet up, play at cards or settling in for movie night.  You won’t regret it.

This home is a lesson in not being misled by first impressions. Yes, it's a stone cottage sitting in the middle of a farm, but step behind the front door and you'll find an interior that's as bright and contemporary as any.

Much of this is down to the bountiful amounts of natural light that streams through the glass doors and roof lantern, although the stark white walls and reflective wooden floors help, too. As well as a long kitchen finished in a muted grey, there's a stylish collection of furnishings dotted about the space, too.

The log burner keeps things cosy during the cooler months and the soaker bath is just what you need after a day exploring the Northumbrian coast. Being located on the edge of historic Bamburgh, in the small village of Waren Mill, means you can enjoy long, quiet walks and energetic hikes through the countryside and along the coast here. Drive ten minutes in the opposite direction and you'll hit the Northumberland coast – both Boulmer and Alnmouth are great options if you fancy a day by the seaside.

Dating back to 1823, this beautifully renovated fisherman’s cottage is the perfect base for exploring the rugged Northumberland Coast. Craster’s working harbour is pretty much at your front door, and most of the rooms have spectacular views across the sea and the charming village. Follow your nose to the local smokehouse and taste their famous kippers (reputedly a favourite of the Royal Family), explore the magnificent Dunstanburgh Castle, or just sit and watch the fishing boats lazily bobbing on the harbour. The Northumberland Coastal Path is easily accessed from the south of the village, for sweeping panoramas and secret beaches. Come back to your pretty cottage to watch the sun set from the terrace, where outdoor dining is set up. Inside, everywhere feels bright and breezy, just how we like our coastal homes to be. Kick off sandy shoes in the cloakroom and make your way into the dazzling white open-plan living space where soft blue accents unite the space and remind us the sea is never far away.

Guests love how spaced apart the bedrooms feel across two floors. Form an orderly queue for first dibs on that swoon-worthy bedroom with a separate dressing area and deep bath for an evening soak. Drop your bags off and head to Beadnell's golden sands (a 0.5-mile walk) for water sports action and sandcastle-making marathons. Then dive into one of the local pubs (one mile away) for a swift pint, hearty grub, and a warm welcome.

Fancy breaking things up with an afternoon at a swimming pool and spa? Then make use of the host's membership to The Ocean Club in nearby Seahouses. You can book in for a fitness class, treatments and a splash about the children's pool. This home has sea views from the doorstep and access to a small patio area which is part of a communal courtyard shared with other neighbours. Inside, there’s a wood burner for cosy nights in, but at full capacity, there’s only one bathroom for five guests.

On the outskirts of Bamburgh, this house provides warm and welcoming family accommodation. It’s just a few minutes' walk to the long sandy beach, Bamburgh Castle, and the village centre, where there are a variety of pubs, restaurants, delicatessens and a butcher. Situated in a Grade II-listed building dating back to 1878, we can't help but swoon over this Alnwick apartment. It doesn't lack character, that's for sure – vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and antique knick-knacks like typewriters and old books are in abundance. We think it's the perfect blend of old and new, and nowhere is a better example of that than the open-plan living area. Bright and roomy, there's more than enough space here to spread out and get comfortable, whether you're tucking into a feast around the table or snuggling up in front of the fire. Cooking is anything but a chore in the glossy kitchen, and on rainy days, head up to the mezzanine for board games and billiards.
