Situated in a Grade II-listed building dating back to 1878, we can't help but swoon over this Alnwick apartment. It doesn't lack character, that's for sure – vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and antique knick-knacks like typewriters and old books are in abundance. We think it's the perfect blend of old and new, and nowhere is a better example of that than the open-plan living area. Bright and roomy, there's more than enough space here to spread out and get comfortable, whether you're tucking into a feast around the table or snuggling up in front of the fire. Cooking is anything but a chore in the glossy kitchen, and on rainy days, head up to the mezzanine for board games and billiards. There's also a communal garden for the summer months, where you can sip tea in the sunshine or cocktails at twilight.

And the location is excellent, too. Alnwick is as charming as they come, sprinkled with history and magic – no wonder they filmed Harry Potter here. Spend afternoons wandering down the cobbled lanes, popping in and out of the independent shops, cafes and bookstores that line the high street. The famous Alnwick Castle is just a short walk away, while the Northumberland coast is a thirteen-minute drive. In the evenings, forgo the home-cooking for a pint, delicious pub grub and live music at one of the cosy inns in town.

Send the blues packing with a stay at this picturesque home at the tip of Bamburgh village. With pops of nautical blues and white wooden beams, this home perfectly fits its coastal location while maintaining the feel of a countryside cottage. A perfect getaway for two, this cottage delivers on all fronts. It's bright and contemporary, but the vaulted ceilings and exposed beams add a rustic touch that suits the surrounding landscape. Inside, a light-filled living area opens onto a gorgeous patio. Sipping champagne as the sun goes down will become your evening ritual – keep an eye out for wild rabbits and rare birds flying overhead. The kitchen is on the smaller side, but it's well-stocked and well-suited to rustling up delicious breakfasts and other light meals. We also adore the sleigh bed – it's as comfortable as it looks, and nothing beats sinking into the plush sheets after a day of exploring. Speaking of exploring, you're only a five-minute drive from Alnwick, a charming market town with a famous castle. Roam the cobbled streets lined with independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, then head up to the castle for a history lesson or wander the gardens. Drive ten minutes in the opposite direction and you'll hit the Northumberland coast – both Boulmer and Alnmouth are great options if you fancy a day by the seaside.

In all its glory, Bamburgh Castle is visible on the skyline just across the nearby farm buildings.

Bright, cosy bedrooms and two bathrooms provide plenty of space for a family or a few friends to share, and we love the ground floor bedroom with patio doors opening to the garden. 

A great spot for keen walkers and beach lovers, it's just a few minutes drive to the coast (the beach is 2 miles away) and even less to the castle itself. Set in a quiet farming hamlet, you'll have peace and quiet, as well as the local amenities, pubs and cafes just a few minutes away.

Head to the Carfraemill Hotel for a hearty meal, a three-minute drive or a twenty-minute walk away. Or, take a day trip to Edinburgh, forty minutes by car. The view from the cottage garden is stunning, looking out over the rolling hills and patchwork fields as far as the eye can see. Inside, you’ll find a farmhouse vibe with modern luxuries – a range-style gas cooker in the kitchen and a solid wood dining table for the whole group. A truly stunning rural retreat, this home is sat on a hill overlooking the beautiful South Tyne Valley – just five minutes from Hadrian's Wall. Away from it all, yet within walking distance of the village pub, this place really has to be one of our favourites in this neck of the woods. A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we love the master bedroom's view and its lovely freestanding bath. Here you'll be in prime walking country, with hikes from your doorstep. Slightly further afield, explore Northumberland's stunning coastline and breathtaking waterside walks. Dating back over 170 years, this beautiful home in the Scottish Borders was updated in 1870 to take on the Scottish Baronial features that gave it its fairytale castle look, but it was only in the late 70s that the incredible vaulted ceiling was discovered and the mezzanine was added to update the home to what it is today. Of course there has been modernisation since to give it the contemporary, but homely, feel and the result is an ambient, open space that encourages rest and relaxation. 

With the windows stretching up to towards the ceiling, there’s plenty of natural light and bookworms will rejoice to find a little home library on the mezzanine where they’re able to curl up with any of the good books on offer. Look out over the lounge from up there and when you get a little cold, head down to kindle the fireplace so you can watch the flames dance between every turn of the page. 

Musicians can retire to the piano room to hone their skills or entertain the rest of the family in style, but not before sitting down for dinner at the chunky oak table. 

Take to the garden as a group, or in isolation, and walk along the sloping paths as you breathe in the fragrant scents of apple, plum and flowering cherry trees of the orchard. You can also do this from the outdoor bench as you nibble on shortbread. 

With a bike shed on site, why not bring along bicycles so you can head out to explore the Borders on two wheels.
