Portsmouth’s beaches and harbour are only 12 miles away, making it a great spot for a day trip. When you’re not out exploring, you’ll be glad to have such a peaceful home-from-home. The open-plan living and dining space has high ceilings and wooden beams, with a wood-burning stove for chilly weather. In spring and summer, you can open the bi-fold doors and spend time on the patio.

It’s on the edge of a wildlife meadow, so sessions on the private terrace come with the soundtrack of birdsong and a gentle summer breeze. Spot wildlife from the warmth of the private hot tub on the deck, or perhaps from the swing seat, strung up on the porch. 

The interior is a reflection of the wilderness location, with wooden artworks featuring fawns and birdlife on display in the cosy bedrooms. The window seat in the master makes for the perfect reading nook, overlooking the meadow, and there’s a desk in here should you need to work remotely. The vaulted, wood-beam ceiling is twisted with stringed lights for a fairytale effect and there’s plenty of room at the rustic wooden table for the group to dine inside (if you’re not enjoying an alfresco meal on the terrace, that is). Come evening time, the plush sofas in the living room are set around a wood-burning stove.

Situated on England's sunny south coast — well, relatively speaking — this home has plenty of ways for you to enjoy a summer's day. The terrace out through the French doors has a glorious view of the River Hamble where you can enjoy paddleboarding, sailing, riverside walks or use as a base for sailing regattas. You can even arrive by boat and moor at the Elephant Boatyard opposite the house. Elsewhere in the large garden, there's a wooden summerhouse with a log burner that brings a touch of apres-ski glamour to this corner of Hampshire, great for cosy sundowners in the winter and family barbecues in summer.

Inside, the preference for wooden interiors continues in the main house, especially in the open-concept living space with its parquet flooring, roof beams and rustic dining table next to a set of tall windows. As well as a huge corner kitchen complete with a sociable island, there are two reception rooms, one with another wood burner for those autumnal evenings.

In the local area, you'll find it easy to enjoy the great outdoors. The River Hamble Country Park is only ten minutes' drive away and is good for a rural walk finished off with a hot chocolate. You're also opposite the Jolly Sailor pub which has roaring log fires in the winter and a great menu for outdoor dining. The centre of Southampton takes just over twenty minutes in the car whenever you fancy a change of pace.

Set on the owners' farm, and right next to their stables, you'll have a great view of the horses being fed each morning – something that's bound to excite the children. 

Anything but rustic, the interiors here are stylish and high-end, with wide-plank flooring and plenty of fabulous stripped back timber beams. The huge living space, surrounded on three sides by floor-to-ceiling windows, is the heart of the home, with squashy velvet sofas, a dining table for six and a delightful kitchen. Set in the South Downs National Park, with views across the rolling hills, here you'll have your own private lawned garden area and you're welcome to explore the rest of the grounds. It's a twenty-minute walk into the pretty market town of Bishop's Waltham, with its shops and pubs, and don't miss a visit to the ruins of its historic abbey. Well, there's no mystery why this home has made our collection. The apartment is right on the beach in East Wittering, so as you can see, it has great views of the sea from the private sunny balcony as well as most rooms. Yes, the galley kitchen is a bit compact if there are more than two people in there, but it's modern and well-equipped. If you tire of East Wittering Beach (unlikely we know), West Wittering Beach, with its views of Chichester, is less than a ten-minute drive. Otherwise, Chichester Marina is just over ten minutes away in the car, and Goodwood House is around a thirty-minute ride.

A timber cabin surrounded by meadows and woodland might sound like a back-to-basics retreat, but at this home in rural Sussex, guests will have a wealth of luxuries at their disposal.

This is before you've even entered the home, as well. Out on the decked terrace, there's a hot tub from which you can enjoy the tranquillity of the local area, as well as a sofa and swing seat. When the sun goes down, there are festoon lights to turn on, plus a charcoal barbecue and fire pit to keep you fed and warm.

If the temperature dips a little too low, there's a wood-burning fireplace inside the home, as well as plenty of cosy blankets and board games. Inside, the design is rustic in places, as with the weathered wood dining table, but the sleek black kitchen and stylish bedrooms are nothing but modern.

When it comes to filling up your itinerary, there's so much to see and do nearby. The sprawling South Downs National Park starts a minute's drive to the north, while the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty sits a similar amount of time in the opposite direction. The town of Bognor Regis and its beach can be reached in twenty-five minutes.

The indoor kitchen is a delight to cook in, designed country-style with a big range cooker, yet modern feeling in slate grey. If you want to get out and explore the area you’ll find a pleasing mix of rural walking routes in the surrounding hills, and the quaint coffee shops, local pubs and shops of Bosham village a fifteen-minute walk away. The centre of Chichester is just a ten-minute drive away too.

When you're ready to venture out, it's about ten minutes on foot to Bosham village, where you'll find a waterfront pub, cafe and a few shops. The walks along the harbour are excellent, but most of the action lies in Chichester's historic city centre, a seventeen-minute drive away. For a day at the beach, West Wittering's Blue Flag Beach is a must-visit – it's about half an hour away by car.

Here, you can easily start your day with a morning walk along the sand, surfing the waves, or with a coffee at a seafront café. Perhaps an amble through the countryside is how you’d like to kick off your day – your private estate is nestled between fields, or you can head to the South Downs for a cycle through verdant valleys. 

There’s plenty to keep all the family entertained at home, too. Get on the Peloton, bounce around the trampoline, or have a game of table tennis. But it’s not all go-go-go here – sometimes all you want to do is read your book beside the pool, basking in the UK’s beautiful south coast. Whip up a pitcher of fruity Pimms to be enjoyed around the outdoor sofa, chatting away while the kids splash in the pool. Or better still – hop in the bubbling jacuzzi for total relaxation. 

If a jam-packed day has left you all tired, a quiet barbecue at home is the perfect way to round off the evening. If you fancy going out, it’s the ideal time to explore West Wittering’s pubs – there’s a great one nearby. Or you can take a twenty-five-minute walk to East Wittering for a change of scenery.

Relax and unwind at this ecologically-minded stylish surfside retreat, just a five-minute walk from the Blue Flag-awarded sands of West Wittering Beach. 

On the ground floor, you'll find a minimalist open layout that's tailor-made for sociable stays, with plenty of space for everyone to sink into one of the comfortable sofas, play board games around the dining table and prepare family meals in the kitchen. Make the most of sunny days and step through the sliding doors and out into the garden, with its wooden deck and stepping stones winding between raised flower beds.

Its four bedrooms are split between the ground and first floors. The upstairs bedrooms are decked out in trendy OSB, which does away with the need for plastering and painting and adds a warm glow that only natural materials can bring.

The nearby beach is the undoubted star of your stay. However, there's plenty more to discover within a short drive. East Wittering is well-catered for when it comes to cafes, pubs and stocking up on essentials. Thrill seekers might like to book themselves a kitesurfing lesson, with kayaking and paddleboarding offering slightly more sedate options.

A little under 10 miles away, the pedestrianised centre of the cathedral city of Chichester is a pleasant place to while away an afternoon. Alternatively, listen to the roar of the engines at Goodwood's iconic motor racing circuit or the shouts of the crowds urging on their picks at Goodwood Racecourse.

This is the kind of place we'd recommend for a longer stay, just because we feel that a one-week booking will barely let you scrape the surface of all it has to offer. The insides are designed for a large family to play, relax, and adventure together, especially as the house is well-equipped with cooking supplies, DVDs, and games. But of course, the real highlight of this house is its beautiful natural surroundings – the mudflats outside offer a unique opportunity for wildlife fanatics and birdwatchers to get their wellies on and reconnect with nature. We love how the whole house is designed with the awareness of the natural beauty just outside, and every room has a stunning view that keeps inviting you to go outdoors. The living space benefits from large picture windows, an intricate fireplace and nautical furnishings that make it as homely as it is bright. Speaking of, the luminous conservatory is a light and airy space to enjoy group meals together while keeping one eye out for the lesser spotted red-breasted merganser. Better still, start your day in the calm fresh air – there's a lovely patio and garden area to enjoy your morning coffee from, complete with an outdoor dining table and chairs. When you're ready to explore the nearby towns, we recommend that you start with Chichester's Cathedrals, then take a twenty-minute drive to West Wittering beach for a day trip. If there are Peppa Pig fans in your party, then a visit to Peppa Pig World at Paulton's Park is also a must. While others may enjoy mooching around the picturesque village of Bosham next door – a six-minute drive. There's so much to see and do here, although we wouldn't blame you for spending most of your time languorously birdwatching, playing games and enjoying the scenic waterfront surroundings at home.

This pet-friendly barn conversion in West Sussex is perfect for a couple or solo traveller seeking a peaceful rural retreat. A rock garden and tended lawn provide ample opportunity for sundowners and alfresco meals, while inside, cosy country-style decor and beamed ceilings provide plenty of English charm. You’ll need to climb a flight of stairs to reach the mezzanine bedroom but waking up to apex views of the surrounding nature is a fair reward. The bus stop at the end of the road offers regular services to Chichester, while the village of Funtington – right on the home’s doorstep – has a selection of restaurants and pubs to enjoy.

There’s two of everything: lounges with wood-burning stoves, country-style kitchens and even two separate backyards each with its own hot tub. The full outdoor kitchen under the pergola can accommodate the most elaborate of barbecues in the summer months and when the weather gets cooler you can get a fire going in the outdoor brick fireplace and huddle on the sofa. Inside, striking equestrian-themed artworks are a nod to the building’s former life as a stable and two dining tables (one in each cottage) with long benches are pure rustic country vibes. As the sun sets, it’s a choice between the circular or square hot tub, both bubbling away beneath stringed lights. Here, you’re on the edge of the South Downs National Park, and bedroom windows overlook the estate’s hay meadow for a bit of tranquillity.
