This old dairy, set on the Burghley Estate, is a peaceful getaway for large groups and makes a pretty picture for small celebrations. Throughout the restoration of the dairy and its conversion into cottages, an emphasis remained on the history of this building, and plenty of the original features remain to make this a charming and comfortable stay. With two wings, it also grants everyone plenty of space, though the mezzanine bedrooms can only be accessed through several ground-floor rooms, which might not feel the most private. Still, it's a beautiful space, and the estate is within the Capability Brown Parkland, first landscaped in the early 1700s and still as lush and inviting, perfect for walks with the dogs.

The owners have spent a year carefully renovating this home, maintaining the classic stonework outside, and creating a sophisticated space filled with colour inside. A wood-burning stove tucked into the original stone wall of the living room adds a touch of cottage cosiness, while midnight blue wall panelling and an aquamarine sofa are solidly 21st-century. The clash of eras continues in the custom-made kitchen where dark blue cupboards filled with sleek black crockery sit against lime-green walls, and the wooden beams of the low ceiling wouldn’t be out of place in an 18th-century country kitchen. Out the back door, a decked, courtyard-style garden is the perfect spot for a pre-dinner drink as stings of lights twinkle above. It’s just a few steps to Stamford High Street, where there are plenty of shops, cafés and delis to choose from.

Built back in the mid-nineteenth century, this Grade-II listed house in Stamford is a real looker from the outside, thanks to its slate roof, coursed stone walls and a white clock face at the very top of the property. The interior is just as handsome, although perhaps a little more modern than might be anticipated. Black leather furnishings and stark white walls are a chic combination in the dual-aspect living area, as is the wood-panelled kitchen and the glass dining room table. Around the back of the house, there's a small patio area with seating so you can make the most of bursts of bright weather. There are plenty of rural attractions around these parts if you visit during the warmer seasons. The sixteenth-century manor, Burghley House, and the adjacent parkland can be reached in twelve minutes by car, while Rutland Water Nature Reserve takes around eighteen.

Peaceful but still well-connected and with plenty of farmhouse charm and comfort, this barn – with a fire pit and a picnic table overlooking swaths of green – does pretty well for itself. The fact that you’re looking directly onto a meadow filled with sheep might tip you off that this home used to be a barn, but that’s about the only hint you’ll get. Through renovating this space, it’s become more of a modern cabin that just so happens to be in close proximity to livestock. The home is an alluring blend of rustic elements like the wood-burning stove and wooden beams, and modern fixtures like the sleek kitchen. Even though inside is where you’d want to be when there’s a bite in the air – how else would you warm yourself if not curled up with a good book next to the fire? – you’ll be hoping for agreeable weather so you can spend all your time outside. Not only is there a hot tub with your name on it, but dining, drinking, and snacking should be done alfresco whenever possible, in our opinion. For a compromise, you can always open the bi-fold doors whilst building puzzles at the bench-style dining table inside. 

If you’re around on Fridays, travel to the neighbouring town of Uppingham in time for their weekly market, and whilst you’re there you can also visit the art galleries and antique shops before grabbing a bite to eat. There are a number of more historical buildings that have been given a second life as wedding venues and are well worth a drive-by – Rockingham Castle and Castle View Farm & Stables are both five minutes away. Even better would be to hire, or bring your own, bicycles so you’re able to view these alongside other landmarks when making use of the many cycling routes around the area.

Secret doors and treasures galore, this Grade II listed home in a quiet part of Long Bennington village is steeped in history and culture. Found in the centre of town, a thirteen-minute walk from Lincoln's iconic Cathedral, this large family home has been restored with comfort and style in mind. Especially so, given the size of the two lounges. Add the dining area into the equation, and you can see how there's plenty of room for everyone to carve out their own space. Two pull-out beds and two single sofa beds keep sleeping arrangements flexible, although these are best for children as they're on the smaller side. 

Step out through the bifold doors onto a large patio area with garden furniture for seamless indoor and outdoor dining. Down from the patio is a large grass area and lower patio area with a Hot Tub suitable for 6-7 people. This is the perfect garden for summer socials and BBQs.

There's something to satisfy everyone's wanderlust at this charming period cottage nestled right in the beating heart of Chipping Campden. This is your gateway to the best of the Cotswolds – Market Hall, The Spa at Cotswold House and Chipping Campden's bustling high street are all within walking distance. And when it's time to explore further afield, jump in the car and you can be in the chocolate-box villages of Bourton-on-the Water and Stow-on-the-Wold in fifteen minutes flat. 

Back at this cosy home away from home, exposed Cotswold stone walls, higgledy-piggledy beams and a crackling wood-burning stove bring all the charm. While we liked the comfortable bedrooms and sparkling bathrooms, what really blew us away was the impressive kitchen and dining area. It's the true hub of the home, with plenty of room to cook and dine together. We can easily imagine mornings here, the French doors open wide as you sip coffee on the patio and tuck into a lazy breakfast around the dining table. We also loved the techy extras, like nest heating, electronic locks and Google Home Bluetooth speakers. With the occasional bleat from the neighbouring sheep your only distraction, it doesn't get much more charming than this.

A true recipient of the Plum Award, this home has also received the Green Tourism Silver Award, in recognition of this host's dedication to green initiatives such as energy and water efficiency and mindful waste reduction. Your host can share recommendations on local farmers markets and shops selling locally-sourced food, as well as eco-friendly activities such as cycling routes and nature trails to help you enjoy your stay in Chipping Campden, all the while reducing your carbon footprint. This is an extra-special home in the grounds of an award-winning boutique vineyard. It’s been carefully curated to offer everything you might need during your stay, and for you to enjoy your visit in the lap of luxury. 

The home is a contemporary villa with vast windows looking out onto the vineyard and the rolling countryside that surrounds the property. The open-plan living and dining space is perfect for chatting over food and sipping wine – there’s even an honesty box wine bar for you to sample the wines produced by the vineyard. A striking nickel bar – like at The Ivy – has pride of place in front of the huge picture window overlooking the vineyard. There are also full height glass patio doors which open onto a wonderful private guest garden and patio.

Outside, pop open a bottle of chilled white or rosé wine and sink into the jacuzzi while the barbecue heats up. When the weather is fine, you won’t want to be anywhere else – there’s a comfy sofa and loungers, ideal for relaxing, and a tennis court if you want to work up a sweat. Dining outside with beautiful views laid out before you is utterly idyllic, especially when the sun starts to sink in the sky. 

If you feel the urge to explore, there’s plenty to see and do in the vicinity. The villa is a four-minute drive from Toppesfield village, where you can enjoy a meal in the community-owned pub. Finchingfield, the most photographed village in Essex is 10 minutes drive. For history enjoy a stroll around Castle Hedingham with its thatched cottages and amazing Norman castle. Saffron Walden, a medieval town – is thirty-six minutes away. There you’ll find a wealth of independent shops, cafes and restaurants around the buzzy market square as well as beautiful historic buildings, gardens, museum and art gallery. 

This is a memorable home for romantic visits to this picturesque area on the Essex/Suffolk border. Make sure you take a bottle of the vineyard’s award winning wine home with you – it’s the perfect memento.

This unique home was a bakery in the 1950s but it was converted by the host's parents, who both worked at the Lincoln School of Art. As well as being a day job, they also had a strong interest in artistic endeavours and they filled the interior with hand-crafted ceramics, fabrics and paintings. Today, much of their collection remains and it lends the feel of part-museum, part-period home — especially with the hardwood floors and wood-burning fireplace. The large garden is equally special too, with a pond full of frogs and plenty of lawn space on which to lie back with a book borrowed from the packed shelves in the dining room. When you fancy exploring your surroundings, the city of Lincoln is thirteen minutes away in the car, while the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in just over twenty. Closer to home, there's a pub two minutes' walk around the corner.

This home could not be better located. Right in the heart of Stow-on-the-Wold, you'll be mere moments away from the village's tea rooms, shops, and restaurants. With a provided parking space, you'll also be able to explore further afield – just note that it's only suitable for compact vehicles. The design back home is contemporary yet cosy. Everyone can relax together in the open-plan living space, while the two en-suite bedrooms offer privacy. There's also a small terrace ideal for summer sundowners – or better yet, head to the pub up the road for a nightcap.

There's something undeniably idyllic about this cottage's location. Sitting alone within acres of Bedfordshire countryside, the River Great Ouse runs alongside the property. You can sit and listen to the peaceful sounds or spot the wildlife that calls the stretch of water home from the outdoor deck, which even has a jetty. If you want to add a touch of decadence, it's also possible to hire a private hot tub and enjoy the scenery surrounded by bubbles.

Heading inside the front door, you'll see that there's a distinctly rustic feel to the interior, particularly the brick flooring and inglenook fireplace holding a log burner. However, you'll also be happy to hear that the home was fully refurbished in 2021, which you can certainly see in the modern blue kitchen and cosy white bedrooms.

When the weather's on your side, there are plenty of walks to embark upon within Turvey Estate and the village itself — along with its pair of pubs, a butchers shop and a park — can be reached in just over a quarter of an hour on foot.
