The medieval town of Shrewsbury is the truly historic heart of Shropshire, with nearly 700 listed buildings in a town of just over 70,000 people. With such a striking skyline and such fine examples of 15th-century construction techniques, it’s no surprise that your home is another architectural marvel. This terraced house has been completely refurbished in a superbly modern fashion. Our favourite spot has to be the bright and airy open-plan living space. With its wonderful bi-folding doors, this clever design essentially removes the wall between your home and your south-facing courtyard garden (perfect for the unpredictable English weather). Mid-century furniture looks stylish in the lounge, while the roll-top tub up in the master en-suite brings a vintage edge to proceedings. For more on local history, take a stroll through town to reach Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery in just eighteen minutes. Another fantastic walk is along the River Severn. Your home is just three minutes from the riverbank, from where you can follow it all the way across the border to Wales. It’s definitely one for experienced hikers with a strong pair of boots though, at just over ten miles away.

This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa. Toast up those toes in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand – you'll feel all warm and homely in no time at all. Step outside of this 17th-century building and explore one of the loveliest market towns in England that's positively brimming with listed buildings, medieval castles and striking churches. Take a short twelve-minute walk up Corve Street to the town centre and explore this historic place for yourself.

This is a stunning Queen Anne-style property that has been lovingly renovated, dating back to the 1690s. While the functional decor isn’t the most inspiring, the small patio garden is a nice touch and the sofa bed offers flexible sleeping arrangements, with the possibility of accommodating an additional two guests. Free on-street parking is a bonus, and Shrewsbury train station is a fifteen-minute walk for easy travel links.

Grab a seat at the breakfast bar and snack on fresh ingredients from the local farm shop or gather everyone round the dining table to feast on a traditional English breakfast – think smoky bacon, fried eggs and buttery toast – before heading out to explore the area. Tucked away in the countryside surrounding Shrewsbury, this lovely cabin makes for an idyllic getaway for two. It can be found on the banks of River Perry, on the border between Wales and England. It’s set in grounds that also boast woodlands and access to the river, in a gloriously quiet spot amid beautiful countryside. 

There are excellent hikes to be enjoyed right from your doorstep, and it only takes forty-eight minutes to drive to the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where you can get up close to some pretty spectacular scenery. History buffs might want to visit Shrewsbury Castle, which is twenty-seven minutes away by car. There are pubs within a five-minute drive of the cabin, so after a day of the Great Outdoors you can sink back into a comfy chair by a roaring fire and enjoy a local pint. 

Of course, you might want to set up camp here in the cabin and not leave the grounds – it would be perfectly understandable. The tranquil private woodland creates a soothing backdrop for doing absolutely nothing. You might sit on the balcony and get stuck into a good book, or stroll along the river looking for ducks to feed. Perhaps you’ll fire up the barbecue in the late afternoon, ready for a relaxing evening in the cabin. When the sun starts to set, you’ll want to slip into the hot tub. The design throughout is fresh and contemporary, with discernible mid-century influences visible in the furnishings. That being said, a few period features have been retained in the interior's modernisation, including embellishments on the ceiling, large sash windows and opulent fireplaces — sadly only ornamental, but still pretty nonetheless.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the historic market town, Shrewsbury Castle is seven minutes' walk in one direction and the riverside parkland in The Quarry is five minutes by foot the opposite way. The surrounding county is full of unspoilt countryside and you can drive over to the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in just under twenty minutes, too.
