The ample hilly walking routes and quaint villages are reason enough to pay a visit to the Shropshire countryside, but just in case you need another incentive, this lodge has the perfect perk in the shape of a hot tub on the terrace. What better way to toast a productive day than by clinking glasses in bubbling water?

We're happy to say that the home's living quarters are just as romantic, with wooden walls, floors and ceilings lending the feel of an Alpine ski chalet, and the fireplace only adding to this sense of cosiness. The French doors bring in plentiful amounts of natural light and also have the added benefit of looking out to the private garden, which even features a waterfall.

When the weather permits, it's easy to pass hours out in the open air thanks to the seating on the covered terrace and the barbecue ready and waiting for summer feasts. You're also spoilt for choice when it comes to nearby locations for bracing rambles, as the home sits on the edge of the Shropshire Hills AONB. Stokesay Castle is five minutes' drive down the road, while the charming country town of Church Stretton is ten minutes in the other direction.

Built in 1780, this Grade II listed folly makes for a quirky and charm-filled base in Shropshire. From an elevated position on a rock knoll, it boasts glorious views across the countryside. It also sits within 1.75 acres of enclosed gardens and looks out over a lake. It’s a fairytale-worthy setting, perfect for romantic breaks – but it can also accommodate friends or small families with older children. You can look forward to a rather grand drawing room, as well as the original quarry tiles in the cosy kitchen. When the season is right, you can even pick your own fruit from the trees – however you spend your stay, it’s sure to be memorable.

The Snowflake

This Grade II-listed barn conversion is one of three on a private farm development in the peaceful Shropshire Hills, all boasting panoramic views. The two-storey home was originally a working granary and has been sympathetically restored to retain many original features, including troughs and stalls. The open-plan sitting/dining area boasts a cozy wood burning stove, and the modern kitchen is well-equipped with a large central island. Upstairs, there is a main suite with a king-size leather sleigh bed and en-suite bathroom, as well as a second bedroom that offers either twin single beds or a 6' super-king size zip and link bed, also with its own en-suite shower room. The ground floor has underfloor heating throughout and floor-to-ceiling windows that let in natural light. Outside, guests can relax on the enclosed front and rear patio and gravel gardens with garden furniture and charcoal barbecue. It's perfect for four guests seeking peace and tranquillity while still being within striking distance of nearby Shrewsbury's mediaeval castle, Tudor streets full of eateries and shopping, Church Stretton, Much Wenlock, Cardington's excellent restaurants, and more.

The property boasts panoramic views of the Shropshire Hills and is within striking distance of historic Shrewsbury and the River Severn, making it a fabulous base for couples or families to discover all that Shropshire has to offer. The cozy living area features a wood burning stove and high beamed ceilings, and the underfloor heating throughout ensures this single-storey conversion is ideal throughout the seasons. The well-equipped kitchen is fully fitted with integrated appliances and a separate utility room houses the washer/dryer. But you’ll still find plenty of modern comforts – the master bedroom features a walk-in dressing room, there's a charming Juliet balcony that opens the living room up to the treetops and there's a new log burner for staying cosy no matter the weather. Spend your days exploring the area – the city of Ludlow is only a short ten-minute drive away and boasts a castle and charming market, and there are plenty of hiking trails through the hills to add to the itinerary. When you arrive back home, run a bath fed from the local spring and put together a meal in the sociable kitchen. There's even a private cobbled courtyard to sit out in on warm evenings. If you're lucky, you'll catch sight of the swifts and swallows that nest in the area.

This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa. Toast up those toes in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand – you'll feel all warm and homely in no time at all. Step outside of this 17th-century building and explore one of the loveliest market towns in England that's positively brimming with listed buildings, medieval castles and striking churches. Take a short twelve-minute walk up Corve Street to the town centre and explore this historic place for yourself.

This barn conversion in deepest Herefordshire is bursting with rural authenticity. Not only is the property located close to a peaceful nature reserve complete with lakes, but it's also been Grade-II listed to protect its historical importance. However, despite this impressive pedigree, the home's interior is pretty contemporary, with a sleek kitchen, four-poster bedrooms and tiled bathrooms sitting quite comfortably underneath the original wooden ceiling beams. Out the front, there's a private garden with seating and views of hills and forests, but there's also an additional courtyard to the back that's shared with neighbours. With the flexibility to sleep up to 24 people, this magical country house is all set up for special events, gatherings of friends and family, activity holidays and more. With views across the Wye Valley, it's set on five acres of pristine land and has nine bedrooms for you to choose between – either in the beautifully restored and extended 17th-Century farmhouse or the stunning new guest annexe. 

Lovers of interior design will have a field day here. It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions. And if you fancy an action-packed break, your host can put together a unique itinerary for your group. You're bound to make memories that last a lifetime.

Enjoy a romantic stay at this handsome barn conversion, lying at the end of a track, on a family-run arable farm, surrounded by fields – this is a sublime retreat. Relax with a glass of bubbly in the private hot tub with its idyllic views through the farm to the fields beyond (your lovely hosts provide bathrobes and slippers), then savour a barbecue lunch in the sun. It's also the perfect spot to do a bit of stargazing when the night skies are clear and full of sparkling diamonds. Beautiful bi-fold doors provide plenty of light inside this single-level barn, which was once a grain store. We love the gorgeous stone floor and exposed wooden roof beams framing the high ceiling. A fresh colour scheme of pale cream, yellows and greys complement the rustic yet stylish design. If you can tear yourself away from this love nest, there's plenty to explore. Go for a walk to the historic riverside village of Bidford-on-Avon, sixteen minutes on foot, where you'll find an array of charming pubs, restaurants, shops, and a picturesque church built in 1250. Or visit Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon, around a twenty-five-minute drive, while stunning Warwick Castle is a few minutes more in the car. The magnificent Cotswolds are on your doorstep too – Hidcote Manor Garden, near Chipping Campden, just over a fifteen-minute ride, which has one of Britain's most influential Arts and Crafts gardens.

Set in Ford, an attractive hamlet along the banks of the River Windrush, this romantic cottage offers the highest levels of charm and comfort for your Cotswolds escape. It’s hidden away within the grounds of the host’s own home, but offers complete privacy. There’s a small but well-equipped galley kitchen with a Nespresso machine and milk frother for a little luxury morning coffee. But our favourite bit is the four-poster, king-size bed which guarantees a luxurious night’s sleep. just what you need after a day tackling some of the best hiking routes in the Cotswolds. The Cotswolds Way runs right by the cottage and walks around Sudeley Castle are just a few miles away.

As the name the suggests, this beautifully converted home used to be a dairy, or to be more accurate, a former cheese press. Fully modernised with reclaimed timber floors and underfloor heating throughout, it's now a cosy and comfortable retreat. French doors lead from the sitting room to a flower-filled private garden where you can sit and enjoy a glass of wine while watching the sun go down. As an added bonus, you can pre-order delicious meals from your host during your stay. With plenty of walks and pubs close by, it’s the perfect base for exploring the unspoilt countryside – Bredon Hill and the Malvern Hills are especially lovely. A little further afield are the popular destinations of Stratford-upon-Avon and Cheltenham, both under an hour’s drive away.

If you'd prefer to get out and explore the nearby area, the encompassing landscape is blessed with numerous mountain biking trails. If two wheels aren't your scene, Bala is just four miles away and is an oasis of water sports, abseiling and kayaking.

Once you've explored the diverse scenery around your tranquil haven, visit the welcoming pubs and restaurants around Bala. For a real Welsh treat, a Michelin star restaurant resides up the road in Llandrillo.

Get off the beaten track at this remote retreat set deep within the Herefordshire countryside, close to the Welsh border. Originally the farm's dairy, it's been lovingly converted from a derelict outbuilding to stylish home from home in just a few short years.

Inside, discover a cute contemporary farmhouse style, with beautiful natural stone flooring, a sleek kitchen and an inviting seating area placed within warming distance of the wood burner.

Step through to the bedroom, where you'll find a comfortable bed with a skylight above, perfect for stargazing, and an elegant freestanding bathtub for indulgent evening pampering sessions.

The star of the show has got to be the wood-fired hot tub, with views across to the Monnow Valley. Spend your days hiking through the hills with your dogs, before hosing them down at the outside tap and jumping into the warm water – we can't help but feel that the dog's getting the raw end of the deal here.

Speaking of walks, there are plenty of public footpaths that pass across the farm, with your hosts able to provide OS maps and walking books should you need them. If you want to venture further afield, why not head up the Skirrid, Sugar Loaf and Black Mountains – all viewable from the garden.

Built a few years ago, this beautiful conversion may still bear some resemblance to a barn with its stone clad facade, but that’s where the similarities end. Inside you’ll find simple, clean lines and, apart from a few pops of colour, a fairly neutral colour palette. Stylish, and clearly modern, the home’s crowning glory is the wide expanse of green that can be admired from the front door. Stare out over the beautiful dips and peaks as you take your seat at the wrought-iron table outside and nurse your first cup of coffee of the day. 

Breakfast can also be enjoyed out here if you prefer, although the wood dining table in the living space is elegant, and with its position right next to a window, you don’t entirely lose sight of the scenic views on offer. 

With a real focus on reconnecting you with nature, most of the ground floor rooms open up to let the fresh country air in – take a nap on the cushy bed with the doors ajar and wake up refreshed. 

Walk the grounds or watch the little ones run around on the lawn whilst you enjoy a glass of wine in a sun lounger. This is also a great spot for sunsets, but before that, you can drive out and explore the rural Welsh beauty of this area, you might want to stop off at the Rhug Estate Farm Shop and drive-thru, about six minutes away, to refuel before perhaps enjoy two splendid nearby reservoir walks: Brenig and Alwyn

The Valley Barn

The medieval town of Shrewsbury is the truly historic heart of Shropshire, with nearly 700 listed buildings in a town of just over 70,000 people. With such a striking skyline and such fine examples of 15th-century construction techniques, it’s no surprise that your home is another architectural marvel. This terraced house has been completely refurbished in a superbly modern fashion. Our favourite spot has to be the bright and airy open-plan living space. With its wonderful bi-folding doors, this clever design essentially removes the wall between your home and your south-facing courtyard garden (perfect for the unpredictable English weather). Mid-century furniture looks stylish in the lounge, while the roll-top tub up in the master en-suite brings a vintage edge to proceedings. For more on local history, take a stroll through town to reach Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery in just eighteen minutes. Another fantastic walk is along the River Severn. Your home is just three minutes from the riverbank, from where you can follow it all the way across the border to Wales. It’s definitely one for experienced hikers with a strong pair of boots though, at just over ten miles away.

Tucked away in an idyllic rural setting, this holiday home is great for large families or groups of friends. It’s on an acre of land and boasts a loggia, an arboretum, and a sunken garden with games including croquet, badminton and boules. You’ll even have a hot tub to relax in after countryside walks. The village of Pembridge is 1 mile away, and you can use the provided bikes to explore – though we’d bring a car for adventures further afield. 


The Oak & Elm

Situated in a picturesque part of North Wales, this cottage is perfect for a romantic retreat in peaceful surroundings. Sympathetically modernised but with original features showcasing the home's 19th-century origins, you’ll feel relaxation settle over you from the moment you first arrive. With underfloor heating in the open-plan living and dining area, you’ll welcome the warmth seeping through your slippers after a long day exploring the surrounding countryside. For added cosiness, light the fire, settle down on the sofa, uncork a bottle of red, and enjoy quality time with your loved one. 

As daylight creeps through your curtains in the mornings, hop out of bed (just mind the beams), rustle up a spot of breakfast and enjoy a morning coffee in your courtyard as the countryside wakes around you and happy birdsong fills the air. From your home, there are plenty of rural walks to enjoy – take a look at the maps and recommended routes provided in your cottage and you’ll soon be on your way. For a bite to eat, you may want to venture into Llangollen, where a great selection of delicious restaurants serves up local cuisine from their riverside location.

Tucked away in a valley at the heart of the Black Mountains, this sprawling home is a dreamy countryside escape. The home is split between an old farmhouse, a cottage, and a studio-style barn, making it a marvellous choice for group getaways. It’s in a stunning location and offers absolute peace and quiet, as well as privacy. If you’re looking to go off-grid and surround yourself with nature, you’ll love this home. 

The farmhouse is as traditional as they come, with wood beams and a roaring fireplace. In the mornings, cook hearty breakfasts on the AGA while enjoying the outstanding views of the valley from the kitchen window. From almost every angle here, the views captivate. 

Perhaps you’ll lace up your boots and head out on a nature walk. There’s an acre of woodland on the 40-acre farm, as well as a stretch of river for you to paddle in. There’s direct access to the Brecon Beacons National Park from the back of the farmhouse, so you won’t run out of hiking or cycling routes. 

When you return after a day exploring the Great Outdoors, you’ll be glad of the mountain spring water hot tub. Fire it up and soak your aching muscles, then spend the rest of the evening playing board games in front of the fire. 

The nearest pub is a fifteen-minute drive, and the cafes and bookshops of Hay-on-Wye are twenty-three minutes away. It may feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, but you can grab a pint or a slice of cake easily enough. Perfection. 


Serenity in the Black Mountains

This cosy home is perfect for a family or group of friends looking for a comfortable and convenient base in Shropshire. The house is just a five-minute walk from the centre of Bridgnorth and the train station. You’ll be perfectly positioned to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ironbridge and the Royal Air Force Museum, and you can explore historic Shrewsbury and the Shropshire Hills. You’ll love the fireplace in chilly weather, and the pretty courtyard garden when it’s warmer. Bedroom three is suitable for children, as it’s set up with a single day-bed with a pull-out underneath.

This home consists of two adjacent half-timbered properties situated in an idyllic rural holiday setting near Pembridge. The house is perfect for large groups of up to 15 guests, with ample space in the dining room when booked together with the cottage. The property features seven well-appointed bedrooms and four bathrooms, including a ground floor shower room. Guests can enjoy endless entertainment provided by the games room, luxury hot tub for six people, croquet, boules, Xbox One S, Bose SoundLink and a good selection of board games. There is also a tennis court available at the owner's house nearby. The property is pet-friendly, welcoming up to two well-behaved dogs (four with prior agreement from the owner) for a small additional charge. The location is ideal for exploring the picturesque "black and white" village of Pembridge as well as other nearby attractions such as Berrington Hall, Croft Castle and Dunkerton's Cider Mill.
