This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa. Toast up those toes in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand – you'll feel all warm and homely in no time at all. Step outside of this 17th-century building and explore one of the loveliest market towns in England that's positively brimming with listed buildings, medieval castles and striking churches. Take a short twelve-minute walk up Corve Street to the town centre and explore this historic place for yourself.

As the name the suggests, this beautifully converted home used to be a dairy, or to be more accurate, a former cheese press. Fully modernised with reclaimed timber floors and underfloor heating throughout, it's now a cosy and comfortable retreat. With views across the Wye Valley, it's set on five acres of pristine land and has nine bedrooms for you to choose between – either in the beautifully restored and extended 17th-Century farmhouse or the stunning new guest annexe. 

Lovers of interior design will have a field day here. It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions. Enjoy a romantic stay at this handsome barn conversion, lying at the end of a track, on a family-run arable farm, surrounded by fields – this is a sublime retreat. Relax with a glass of bubbly in the private hot tub with its idyllic views through the farm to the fields beyond (your lovely hosts provide bathrobes and slippers), then savour a barbecue lunch in the sun. It's also the perfect spot to do a bit of stargazing when the night skies are clear and full of sparkling diamonds. Beautiful bi-fold doors provide plenty of light inside this single-level barn, which was once a grain store. We love the gorgeous stone floor and exposed wooden roof beams framing the high ceiling. A fresh colour scheme of pale cream, yellows and greys complement the rustic yet stylish design. If you can tear yourself away from this love nest, there's plenty to explore. Go for a walk to the historic riverside village of Bidford-on-Avon, sixteen minutes on foot, where you'll find an array of charming pubs, restaurants, shops, and a picturesque church built in 1250. Or visit Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon, around a twenty-five-minute drive, while stunning Warwick Castle is a few minutes more in the car. The magnificent Cotswolds are on your doorstep too – Hidcote Manor Garden, near Chipping Campden, just over a fifteen-minute ride, which has one of Britain's most influential Arts and Crafts gardens.

Dating back to the 19th century, this barn in the White Peak area of the Peak District has ben given a new lease of life in recent years. No longer used for farmyard storage, it's now a country getaway full of luxurious touches.

Save for the sections of exposed stonework, you wouldn't be able to guess this home's true age. The design is contemporary but definitely rustic in flavour, with bare floorboards, artfully weathered wooden furnishings and a Scandinavian-style wood-burning stove that's the ideal companion to return to after a long bout in the great outdoors. The svelte rolltop bathtub upstairs is another way to get toasty and warm, too.

As you can probably guess from looking out through the glass doors to bucolic views of rolling countryside, you're not short of walking routes and picturesque scenic points in the immediate locale. This barn conversion in deepest Herefordshire is bursting with rural authenticity. Not only is the property located close to a peaceful nature reserve complete with lakes, but it's also been Grade-II listed to protect its historical importance.
