This home was once a hayloft in a former life — the original circular window on the front is so shaped for pitching hay through — but today it's a perfectly cosy space for a rural getaway. Found in the middle of five hundred acres of woodland and farmland in Middle England, this home in a former stable block and servants quarter has all the necessary ingredients for a truly restorative rural getaway. Built a few years ago, this beautiful conversion may still bear some resemblance to a barn with its stone clad facade, but that’s where the similarities end. Inside you’ll find simple, clean lines and, apart from a few pops of colour, a fairly neutral colour palette. Stylish, and clearly modern, the home’s crowning glory is the wide expanse of green that can be admired from the front door. Stare out over the beautiful dips and peaks as you take your seat at the wrought-iron table outside and nurse your first cup of coffee of the day. 

Breakfast can also be enjoyed out here if you prefer, although the wood dining table in the living space is elegant, and with its position right next to a window, you don’t entirely lose sight of the scenic views on offer. 

With a real focus on reconnecting you with nature, most of the ground floor rooms open up to let the fresh country air in – take a nap on the cushy bed with the doors ajar and wake up refreshed. 

Walk the grounds or watch the little ones run around on the lawn whilst you enjoy a glass of wine in a sun lounger. Dating back to the 19th century, this barn in the White Peak area of the Peak District has ben given a new lease of life in recent years. No longer used for farmyard storage, it's now a country getaway full of luxurious touches.

Save for the sections of exposed stonework, you wouldn't be able to guess this home's true age. The design is contemporary but definitely rustic in flavour, with bare floorboards, artfully weathered wooden furnishings and a Scandinavian-style wood-burning stove that's the ideal companion to return to after a long bout in the great outdoors. This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa. Toast up those toes in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand – you'll feel all warm and homely in no time at all. Step outside of this 17th-century building and explore one of the loveliest market towns in England that's positively brimming with listed buildings, medieval castles and striking churches. Take a short twelve-minute walk up Corve Street to the town centre and explore this historic place for yourself.

From here, the only sound is the odd bleet from sheep in the field next door.

Once a humble farm building back in the past, this home is now a Grade-II listed home surrounded by three acres of grounds and orchards in rural Cheshire.

Despite this sense of heritage, the interior is more contemporary in style, with stark white walls, a smart grey kitchen and a whirlpool tub in one of the bathrooms. Of course, it wouldn't feel like a real country getaway without a log-burner and there's one ready and waiting for chilly evenings in the living room.

If you're visiting during the warmer months, however, there's a private patio complete with a gas barbecue, as well as plenty of quiet spots out among the grounds. The hosts really make the most of this outdoor space and are happy to share their homemade produce — be it cider, apple juice or fresh eggs from the chickens that also call the address home.

It's fair to say that the home's location is isolated, but there are plenty of distractions if you look hard enough. Cyclists and walkers are fond of Bickerton Hill, which lies ten minutes' drive away, while the historic town of Chester only takes half an hour to reach in the car.

We're happy to say that the home's living quarters are just as romantic, with wooden walls, floors and ceilings lending the feel of an Alpine ski chalet, and the fireplace only adding to this sense of cosiness. The French doors bring in plentiful amounts of natural light and also have the added benefit of looking out to the private garden, which even features a waterfall.

When the weather permits, it's easy to pass hours out in the open air thanks to the seating on the covered terrace and the barbecue ready and waiting for summer feasts. You're also spoilt for choice when it comes to nearby locations for bracing rambles, as the home sits on the edge of the Shropshire Hills AONB. Stokesay Castle is five minutes' drive down the road, while the charming country town of Church Stretton is ten minutes in the other direction.

With 5 acres at your disposal, this rustic cottage in the Peak District is the ideal escape for anyone looking to indulge in a slice of rural peace. Not so rural, however, that you can’t easily nip into the Georgian gem that is Ashbourne. Explore the local coffee shops and markets whilst you’re there by strolling the cobbled streets and admiring the architecture. The award-winning Callow Hall is five minutes away, and Thor’s Cave – one of the beautiful hiking trails of the area – can be found at the other end of a twenty-minute drive. 

But we bet we had you at rural peace, didn’t we? You’d be right to embrace it and there’s no better way than soaking up all that quiet from your position on the sunlounger. In the summer months, you can ward off the heat by slipping into the beautifully clear, private pool. Autumn and spring would best be spent strolling the large garden – you might even pack a basket and thermos for an impromptu picnic when you find a spot that you’re particularly drawn to.

Sitting deep within the Peak District, you're certainly not short of walking routes in the local area, plus a couple of historic attractions — Magpie Mine is only a ten-minute walk, for instance. And what would a rural getaway be without a charming pub? You'll probably be happy to hear that the closest one is only eight minutes away on foot.
