A rural break in Somerset should be all about enjoying nature with as little interruption as possible — and this is why Quail Trail is a great place to be. With acres of greenery surrounding you, pristine wildlife, and Mendip Hills as a backdrop, staying here will recharge your batteries. This is a sleek eco-cottage equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay, from a kitchen with a modern coffee machine to a large Villeroy and Bosch en-suite bathroom. The wrap-around terrace features a few cosy hangout spaces, and let's not forget that you'll get the prime spa experience at any time of the day with a built-in outdoor hot tub. For those who have a long watchlist of movies to catch up on, the big screen TV by the wood-burning stove will prove to be extra useful and in the silence of Strawberry Fields Park, nothing will disturb you. When you're ready to turn in for the night, a luxuriously soft bedroom awaits.

Quail Trail

No trip to Somerset is complete without a visit to Cheddar Gorge, and from this home, you can be there in less than ten minutes. Perfect for families who love the great outdoors, it's a modern eco lodge on a small, rural park development. Spacious and well laid-out, it's been designed to make life as easy as possible – leaving you nothing to do but sit back and enjoy your break. A wheelchair-friendly ramp leads up to the entrance and the wraparound deck, where you can not only eat outside and relax on the sun loungers, you can also spend some quality time in your private hot tub to the rear. Inside, it's bright and open, with comfortable furnishings and a home from home feel. We love the kitchen and dining area, opening to the deck and fully equipped with everything you'll need to cook up family meals at home. Stroll through the communal gardens and the orchard, or explore further afield – the Mendips Way hiking trail passes close by and Wells is just a twenty-minute drive. 

Dwell on the Deck

There’s no better way to embrace the ethereal Somerset countryside around Glastonbury than staying in a converted church. In the evening, the stained-glass windows of this gothic church still glow against the landscape, as a roaring wood-burning stove warms up the open living space inside. 30-foot, knaved ceilings inside let the chatter of good times rise to the Gods and there’s a banquet-sized dining table for the whole group on the mezzanine level. Admire the rose stained-glass windows as you sup. 

The kitchen is tucked away and has everything you need for self-catering One of our favourite spots is the sunroom, set with tables and chairs for an idyllic afternoon tea. Either that or the hand-painted claw-foot tub in the main bathroom – ideal for a soak after hiking up Glastonbury Tor. Or, soak the day away in the outdoor hot tub.

This church is tucked into the hamlet of East Horrington, a ten-minute drive from the Cathedral town of Wells where you’ll find shops, cafés and plenty of places to eat. It’s a twenty-minute drive to Glastonbury and the countryside in between is full of walking and cycling trails to explore. 

Gothic Church

Located in the village of South Barrow, this charming single-storey barn conversion offers a peaceful retreat. The enclosed garden is ideal for soaking up the Somerset sun and inside, there’s a log burner for when the weather turns cold. When you feel like exploring, there’s the nearby Haynes International Motor Museum, home to the UK's largest exhibition of cars and motorbikes. Or, just a short drive away is the town of Bruton where you’ll find plenty of boutiques, restaurants and art galleries.

The Barn Conversion

Tucked away on a working flower farm just 10 miles from Glastonbury, this cottage puts you in the heart of Somerset's scenic countryside. We think it's a cosy little love nest for couples. There's just enough space for two in the living room to relax or cook, while the bedroom has charming character features like exposed stone walls and beamed ceilings. When the sun is out, you can take advantage of the shared garden, or make the most of the private patio – just the spot for a glass of wine.

Flowers & Foliage

If you’re looking for a group retreat that combines luxury accommodation with a mystical quality then, abracadabra! This is the one. Influenced by its proximity to Glastonbury (five minutes from the town centre), with its witchcraft myths and Arthurian legends, this home's defining characteristic is quirk, from the architectural details that resemble enchanted oak trees to the dedicated midnight badger-watching spot in the garden. However, while most esoteric accommodation tends to the tumbledown end of the rustic spectrum, this unusual abode is practically palatial. Everything is to the highest spec, including a sound system with ceiling speakers, large American-style fridge-freezer and memory foam mattresses. Originally a cottage dating back to 1580, it’s been substantially extended to add luxury bed-and-bath spaces – the master is our favourite, with its cocktail balcony and freestanding bath – and a ten-metre entertainment pod, with underfloor heating, a constellation ceiling, Bang & Olufsen widescreen TV and Wifi sound system. If you're staying for Glastonbury, a special festival package that includes free Sunday tickets can be arranged ahead of time. Your hosts can provide a welcome hamper full of locally sourced snacks, elderflower and still water upon request, or if you’re planning an extra special visit, they can wave a wand to arrange an in-house chef and full catering – perfect for that full-moon ceremony. 

Hunters Moon

A lot of time and thought has been put into converting the historic chapel that is now The Burrow. Nestled in a tranquil spot of countryside surrounded by rolling hills, the space feels authentically rustic but still comfortable and elegant. The tall arch windows provide floods of natural light and beautiful views of the landscape, including the inviting (and heated) swimming pool. While remote location would be difficult for guests without a car, it also makes it a great spot for a romantic getaway. 



The Burrow

Escape to the country with a stay at this large home near Glastonbury. Surrounded by hills, gorges and moorland, the property is perfect for people who love a good walk. Cute market towns, such as Glasto and Bridgewater, add to the bucolic vibe. Recently renovated, the living room is cosy and bright, the bedrooms are light, and we love the large open-plan kitchen ¬– a great place to socialise with friends and family. Plus, the huge garden gets lots of sun in the afternoon. 

Festival House 

Renovated to the highest standards by the current owners, this gorgeous former rectory is the perfect place for a large family retreat. Dating back to the seventeenth century, the home is built from local honey-coloured stone and faces south across the Somerset countryside. Seven acres of grounds are dotted with chestnut trees and rolling lawns, while there’s also a children’s play area, a heated swimming pool and a croquet lawn, so there's no risk of running out of things to do. During the summer, the terraces are particularly inviting, while the clear skies provide fantastic stargazing opportunities come nighttime. Meanwhile, in winter, the thought of a brisk walk followed by lunch at the local pub is hard to resist — heading straight north from the property will get you to the pretty brooks that run off the River Cary, while the nearby villages of Corton Denham and Babcary are both home to excellent watering holes. The idyllic market town of Castle Cary is a ten-minute drive away, and just beyond that lies Bruton, which has been quietly remaking itself as a haven for artists, foodies and creatives. Located between the two towns, The Newt in Somerset is an extensive country estate, complete with fascinating cider-making and gardening exhibits, a Roman villa museum and plenty of parkland to explore.


Honey Stone

This wood-clad cabin sits at the bottom of the Mendip Hills, surrounded by the beautiful Somerset countryside. Spot wildlife in the Rodney Stoke Nature Reserve, a twenty-minute walk away, or dander into the village of Draycott in ten minutes. And it’s forty minutes on foot along the walking trails into Cheddar town, where you can stock up on the region’s famous protected cheese. Perhaps a grilled cheese toastie on the wood-fired brick barbecue is on the cards when you get back. There’s plenty of room to dine and lounge outside on the wrap-around terrace. Or, fire up the hot tub for a post-hike soak and watch the sunset over the rolling Mendip Hills around you. Floor to ceiling glass doors open up to blend indoors with outdoors and mean you can enjoy the view even when the weather is moody and dramatic, from the comfort of the sofa. The kitchen has everything you need for family meals (macaroni cheese with oodles of Cheddar cheese, perhaps?) and you’ll soon drift off to the land of nod in sprawling king-size beds and peaceful surrounds. 

Because You're Gorgeous

For a small family or a group of friends, holiday homes don't get much better than this. An eco-cottage equipped with a wood-burning stove and a lovely open-plan living room, it's ideal for hanging out, watching movies, and dining in around the sleek white table. Then, when you're ready to take on the world outside, there's a day out to suit everyone's tastes – from walking the West Mendip Way to climbing up Jacob's Ladder to peer over Cheddar Gorge or getting in touch with your spiritual side at Glastonbury Tor. However, staying in is no less fun, especially with the outdoor hot tub bubbling away in the background. The wrap-around terrace is a great place to put your feet up and relax on the loungers or even a spot of alfresco dining while you watch the sun go down. When the weather isn't playing ball, pick up some local produce from the nearby shops and use the well-equipped kitchen to whip up a speciality or two. This home also boasts two luxuriously cosy bedrooms with green views that will help you recharge and prepare for another day of kicking back and relaxing.
