For splendid seclusion set out in the Somerset countryside, this beautiful barn conversion is the perfect escape for couples and families looking to slow down and enjoy each others company. Viewed from the outside, the building wears its humble origins with pride, but sleek skylights and floor-to-ceiling panes of glass looking out over the landscaped garden allude to what lies in store. The open-plan kitchen/dining/living area is the heart of the home, with plenty of natural light and comfy seating beneath its vaulted ceilings. A fab wood burner that serves to heat the entire space and makes for a welcome spot to huddle around after wintry walks. Blue kitchen units, an electric range cooker and a rustic dining table only enhance the contemporary farmhouse style. Elsewhere on the ground floor, you'll find a couple of cosy and inviting bedrooms (one with an en-suite bathroom), both with direct garden access. Clamber up the oak staircase, and there's one final bedroom that makes for a tranquil retreat at the end of the day. Outside, the garden offers a lovely spot to relax and reflect, with views overlooking the surrounding countryside. There's plenty of seating that makes for fantastic alfresco feasts, while the firepit ensures you can enjoy gazing up at the stars well after the heat of the day has ebbed away. After a day walking through the fields, we can think of nothing better than returning home for a soothing soak in the covered hot tub. The locale is quintessentially Somerset – with the seaside town of Weston Super Mare, stunning Cheddar Gorge, the festival town of Glastonbury and the city of Wells, between ten and forty minutes' drive away.

The crenulated, columned Victorian face of this home is a far cry from a typical, rustic farmhouse. The interior is manor home in miniature with chesterfields around an original fireplace in the main living room, long darkwood dining tables by the bay window, and chandeliers lighting huge bedrooms. Each room retains an element of Victoriana. Attached to the farmhouse, the old cider shed is the kind of country-rustic you’d expect  – flagstone floors in the kitchen, timber beams exposed in eaves bedrooms and a wood-burning in the master suite. The real highlight is the wood-fired hot tub outside beneath the pergola. It looks out over the beautifully manicured gardens, bursting with lavender and colourful hydrangea. If you’re not dining in the grand room inside, head out to the Italian-style loggia where dining is set for the whole group beneath a wooden roof. Granted, the interiors may feel dated for some, and the garden is pocket-sized, but it's all spotlessly clean and would perfectly suit a bucket-and-spade family holiday. With parking right outside on a private driveway, hopping in the car to explore the coast is a cinch. Get off to a flying start along the seven miles of golden sands close by. Or up the ante with a day at Weston-super-Mare's Grand Pier and Sealife Centre – just a short drive away.

This home is the ideal starting point for exploring Somerset. On your doorstep are acres of fields and footpaths through the countryside, while Cheddar Gorge is a twenty-minute drive away. Its wooden exterior blends in nicely with the woodlands and trails nearby, but there are a few features which are somewhat out of the ordinary for a rural escape. First off, the hot tub. Sitting atop your vast decking, alongside a barbecue, outdoor lounge, and shady alfresco dining table, this is the perfect place to de-stress in nature. After this jaw-dropping welcome to the home, swap the tub bubbles for a glass of champagne and take a look around the home. Understated yet stylish, we love the greys, greens, and blues in this sophisticated, natural colour palette. Thanks to huge, panoramic windows in the lounge, you can admire daily sunrises and sunsets from the comfort of the sofa if the weather doesn't hold up.

On summer days, enjoy alfresco meals in the sunshine or laze on the sun loungers with a good book and glass of wine. Our favourite part, however, is the bubbling hot tub. In the evenings, soak your troubles away with a dip under the stars – turn on the LED lighting to set the mood. Even inside, you can make the most of the view, thanks to the French doors. It's warm and inviting, especially when the wood-burning stove is lit. Snuggle up for a family movie night on the squishy sofas – there's a DVD player and a selection of films to choose from – before retiring to the sumptuous bedrooms. Be sure to pack your walking boots. Not only are there trails and an orchard inside the park to explore, but Strawberry Line and Cheddar Gorge are both a short drive away. Or, head into the village of Cheddar for cafes, pubs and local cheese shops – it's a five-minute drive away.

That said, we think you might be spending a lot of time at home. This wooden lodge might look understated, but the interiors are superbly stylish, modern, and playful. The golden patchwork sofa feels warm and homely, in perfect contrast to the sleek, grey kitchen. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the home with light, bringing the outside in – and thanks to certain luxury features, your host has made the 'great outdoors' into the 'fabulous outdoors'. Take in the fresh, country air on the sun loungers on the wrap-around decking. Or maybe you'd rather spend an evening under the star-studded sky in your private hot tub. Pop a bottle of English fizz in the wine cooler and relax under the sheltered, starlight roof – you've earned it.

With a feeling of seclusion and views over the hills, you might forget you're conveniently close to the shops and restaurants of the town.

Steering clear of the traditional style of lodge homes, this place is chic and glamorous, with contemporary timber cladding, a glossy black kitchen and comfy, modern furnishings. We love the L-shaped deck, where you'll find your private hot tub and a secret covered area which comes into its at night – just wait until you switch on the starlight roof. But there's even more to love indoors, with a cosy log burner for winter stays and a fabulous bathroom with a big, freestanding bath and a walk-in rainfall shower. It’s been recently renovated with wood floors and floor-to-ceiling windows, and it boasts a charming blend of contemporary and antique furniture. If you like the idea of escaping the city for a charm-filled cottage, but could do without dusty beams and draughty doors, this is the right home for you. 

The cottage is warm and welcoming, the perfect setting for a romantic escape. Curl up on the sofa and admire the lush garden as you sip Champagne. When the weather is fine, open up the glass doors to create a stunning indoor/outdoor space. Whip up meals in the kitchen to enjoy outside in the garden, or fire up the barbecue for a real alfresco treat – you might like to walk to the nearby farm shop for local goodies to cook. Soak up the sunshine outside and enjoy the countryside views. In the evening, get cosy around the fire pit before sinking into the oh-so-comfortable bed upstairs. 

You could happily spend your days here, playing board games, reading, and admiring the garden, but if you do want to explore further afield, you have plenty of choice. The East Mendip Way passes right by the cottage, so bring your hiking boots if you want to get a bit closer to the Great Outdoors. It takes thirty-two minutes to drive to Bath, where you can admire the Roman Baths and explore the galleries, museums and theatres – not to mention the excellent array of eateries. Or perhaps you’ll just pootle around the countryside, popping into charming villages – Mells and Bruton are close by – and country pubs whenever the fancy strikes? Soho House members will enjoy its proximity to Babington House. However you spend your time here, you’ll love having such a delightful place to call home.

From the moment you see the grand stone exterior and cobbled courtyard, you’ll know that this ever-so-charming home is steeped in history. It's a former malthouse that’s over 300 years old and filled with traditional features. When you step into the entrance hall, you’re entering through the large oak door onto the original cart-way, and as you start trying to choose which bedroom you want to lay claim to, you’ll be winding your way up a turret stairway with rope bannisters, surrounded by wooden beams and original fireplaces. The interior has been fully renovated, with a modern handmade kitchen, squishy sofas, and cute-as-a-button bedrooms. Sip your afternoon tea perched on the sunny window seat with a good book in hand (there's an extensive collection to choose from), while gazing at the expansive green views of the playing fields and village church in the backdrop. Elsewhere, the large 14-seater pine dining table will be the perfect spot to savour a slow dinner with the entire group. Although in the garden you'll notice a patio, complete with outdoor furniture, that’s ideal for wine and cheese nights – there's a large lawn and a range of outdoor games available too (including table tennis) for hours of early evening fun. You don’t have to go far to continue the historical theme, as the pub next door is one of the oldest in the country and has been the resting place for many a monarch visiting the area since the 15th century. The surrounding county town, Frome, just a fifteen-minute drive away, was voted one of the best places to live in the UK - explore the rich history, shop at independent boutiques, buy fresh produce at the local market or dine at one of the many eateries dotted around nearby.

Part of a manor that dates back to the sixteenth century, this beautiful listed barn conversion is not your average country cottage. With enough design credentials for a magazine spread, the home mixes old and new with aplomb. Gather in the grand room to see a space with cathedral-like ceilings and antler chandeliers, with pops of bright modernity from the aquamarine walls and huge pieces of artwork hanging on the walls. There are cosier spots too, including bedrooms that have been tucked up in the rafters ensuring a snug night's sleep, as well as a log-burning fire in the second living room. Comprised of two adjoining barns, the home has got enough room to seat the entire party, with two kitchens for whipping up a feast — ask ahead and the owners will provide you with eggs from the grounds' chickens. Outside, there's a private covered hot tub, a barbecue area and pretty walled gardens to explore, but beyond the gates, one of England's most beautiful counties awaits — Cranbourne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in less than fifteen minutes by car, as can the architecturally unique town of Blandford Forum.

One glance at this thatched arts and crafts style cottage and you'll feel like you've stumbled into a fairytale. But instead of a faraway kingdom, you'll find this cosy homestead nestled in a quiet corner at the edge of Dartmoor National Park. It's the perfect place to escape to the country – one glance at those striking views over the Teign Valley from the private garden and you'll never want to return to the bustle of city life (we sure didn't). Inside, the magic continues, with an inviting sitting room perfect for family time and a country-style kitchen that has everything you'll need to rustle up a meal. We loved the welcome hamper – host Charles leaves bread, jam, local milk and even fresh flowers to make you feel right at home – and the delightful touches like board games and DVDs provide plenty of entertainment. Enjoy a family game night in front of the fire, curl up with a book in the cushy armchair or spend a chilled evening snuggled up with your favourite films. During the day, don your walking shoes and hit the nearby trails, then, following an afternoon of rambling, reward yourself with a well-earned pint at one of the local pubs. Or, if you'd prefer a bit more liveliness, Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away.

Make yourself a cup of tea and take it outside to your private riverside terrace, where the sound of the water cascading along the rocky riverbed and the many birds that visit it is all you need to feel content. Part of a small complex of cottages, around a central courtyard, it's set in an estate boasting more than a hundred acres of land – including hillside meadows, woodland and streams. 

The building you'll be calling home was once part of the home farm for the impressive Plas Cilybebyll Estate and was most likely stables and grooms' quarters – although some of its stone features hark back to the estate's noble history. Dive into its fascinating past and you'll spot links to the descendants of the ancient Welsh kings, the Norman invasion, Iolo Morgannwg and more. You'll even find an arrow slit in the lounge and another in the ground floor wet room wall.

Cleverly converted and architect designed, this home uses green energy and is insulated with sheep's wool. It's a surprisingly modern and comfortable home for a small family or a couple of friends here to make the most of its idyllic rural setting. By day, explore the farm thanks to a trail that starts at your door, visiting cattle and spotting wildlife as you go. If you're a keen cyclist, you're within striking distance of the Afan Forest and Bike Park Wales, with safe storage for your equipment.

Just an eight-minute drive from the town of Pontardawe and less than half an hour from Swansea, you'll feel as though this fairytale setting is tucked well away from the rest of the world.

It’s a six-minute drive to the centre of Raglan where you can explore castle ruins, pop in to one of the cosy pubs or stock up at the traditional butcher and the local village shop. Further afield you’ll find the charming market town of Monmouth a fifteen-minute drive away. The home is blissfully quiet, with nothing but the occasional bleat of sheep or whinny of a horse in the surrounding fields. Out here, away from it all, you can see the canopy of stars from the private garden. During the day, this spot is perfect for a family barbecue, with dining on the patio. Inside, it’s open-plan living made cosy with a wood-burning stove set in the old stone wall of the living room. Period features like the old timber frame and arrow-slit windows have been retained, showing off the age of the building. The Aga and Belfast sink in the kitchen keep that farmhouse feel, perfect when paired with farm-fresh produce from the hole-in-the-wall farm shop just down the road.

Just a twenty-minute drive from the town of Glastonbury, this wooden lodge is so much more than a base from which you can explore the fields. It's a tiny spa resort that could convince you to spend more time relaxing at home than you planned. Kick off your hiking boots and head to your private, wrap-around terrace. Bask in the southern sunshine with a glass of fine English sparkling wine in hand. And the bubbles continue in another sense – top up your glass and take a dip in the outdoor hot tub.

While this might be far from the rustic escape you imagined, you can still head inside to cook up a wholesome meal, albeit in the glossy, modern kitchen. Dig out a classic recipe for a Sunday roast and gather round on bright orange chairs in the dining space. Or of course, you might want to dine alfresco under the warm palette of an English sunset.

Mendip Hillside

In the heart of a quaint little village in Somerset, this 16th century thatched cottage seamlessly blends rustic charm with modern comforts and restored interiors. Stone floors, whitewashed walls and thick oak doors house the open plan living area, complete with a high-spec kitchen with an electric Aga, a cosy sitting room where you can curl up on the armchair with a book off the shelf, and a wooden dining table with ornate chairs. The back door leads out into a picture-perfect courtyard, enclosed by stone walls. The air is scented by the lavender bush and the climbing roses, and on sunny days, gather at the outdoor table for a languid lunch. 

The cottage is a short walk from two lovely country pubs serving locally sourced food and Somerset cider. After a hearty lunch, head down one of the many public footpaths nearby, taking you through rolling green meadows and pastures. There is a village shop where you can buy provisions for dinner, or head two miles into the town of Ilminster, where you’ll find a variety of local shops and a supermarket. After a day of exploring, the sanctuary of the cosy bedrooms will call, with their serene green walls palette and wooden floors. You’ll easily fall into the swing of peaceful village life here, and leave feeling rested and rejuvenated.

One of the things that we like most about The Austen is the way that it has retained its sense of history. The building is over 250 years old, and the hosts have managed to keep many of the original features, including the wood panelling, fireplaces, and Georgian shutters. The home is also in the very centre of Bath. As in, less than five minutes on foot to the Roman baths themselves (and the same distance to the station, which while less glamorous, is also worth knowing). Even if it weren’t kept so well, it would be a good base for exploring the city, but as it is, staying here is simply a delight. 


The Austen

Set within seven acres of private woodland in the beautiful Slad Valley, this architect-designed home has amazing views across the Cotswold escarpment. You can enjoy the vistas from its terrace and various seating areas, as well as from inside. There’s the all-important log burner in the open-plan living area and a library to relax in with a book. We love that the main bedroom suite opens out onto the patio too. When you want to explore, the town of Stroud is around 3 miles away with its farmers’ market and museum, while the local village pub is just over a mile.
