Inside, the exposed beams, pine doors and oak furniture present a toasty space to gather around the large gas-burning stove and will keep your toes warm even during the coldest winter months. 

Come evening, take a stroll down to the local pub, just a five-minute walk down the lane. Just a few minutes further, you'll find the local bakery – perfect for picking up a fresh loaf and fulfilling all of your breakfast needs. Set on the edge of the Exmoor National Park – the area is a dream come true for dog walkers and hikers alike. You'll be within easy reach of the starting point of the South West Coast Path – England's longest waymarked footpath which stretches for 630 miles. And, much like the outside, it's packed with character indoors – from flagstone flooring and exposed stone walls to ceilings clad with wooden beams. If you're after a characterful stay in a charming village, this Dunster cottage ticks all the boxes. Step through the stable doors and straight into the cosy living area, where sumptuous seating and a log burner await. The country-style kitchen has all you need to rustle up dinner, while a small patio at the back is ideal for sundowners. Upstairs, the bedroom has both a double and a single bed, though we think it's best for two. Just note that the steep stairs aren't suitable for children under 5. Look closely, and you'll spot ample inklings of this home's storied past, from the beam-clad ceilings to the Juliet balcony, where flour bags were once hauled from the loft below. It's the perfect place to escape to the country – one glance at those striking views over the Teign Valley from the private garden and you'll never want to return to the bustle of city life (we sure didn't). Inside, the magic continues, with an inviting sitting room perfect for family time and a country-style kitchen that has everything you'll need to rustle up a meal. We loved the welcome hamper – host Charles leaves bread, jam, local milk and even fresh flowers to make you feel right at home – and the delightful touches like board games and DVDs provide plenty of entertainment. Enjoy a family game night in front of the fire, curl up with a book in the cushy armchair or spend a chilled evening snuggled up with your favourite films. During the day, don your walking shoes and hit the nearby trails, then, following an afternoon of rambling, reward yourself with a well-earned pint at one of the local pubs. Or, if you'd prefer a bit more liveliness, Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away.

Rock House Cottage

This unique home nestled in the Swansea Valley is the ideal place to begin your adventures in south Wales. With easy access to both the Brecon Beacons National Park and the coast, you'll love spending your downtime in these wonderfully peaceful surroundings. 

It was used as a cart house when first built, but has since been totally revamped by award-winning Rio Architects. The result is a splendid home that combines contemporary minimalism with some traditional touches – the hosts have even added some Welsh-themed artworks for you to admire. And, if you head outside, you'll find a patio area where you can sip drinks in the sunshine – look out for the magic stone tree built on one of the walls.

The popular Plas Farm Trail passes right by the cottage's front door, and a short road leads you down to the banks of the River Clydach then into a private bluebell wood. A twenty-minute car ride will bring you to the Brecon Beacons, where you can try your hand at a range of outdoor activities including rock climbing and kayaking. And, if you fancy a day at the seaside, you can drive to the Gower Peninsula in forty minutes to discover hidden beaches.

Make yourself a cup of tea and take it outside to your private riverside terrace, where the sound of the water cascading along the rocky riverbed and the many birds that visit it is all you need to feel content. Part of a small complex of cottages, around a central courtyard, it's set in an estate boasting more than a hundred acres of land – including hillside meadows, woodland and streams. 

The building you'll be calling home was once part of the home farm for the impressive Plas Cilybebyll Estate and was most likely stables and grooms' quarters – although some of its stone features hark back to the estate's noble history. Dive into its fascinating past and you'll spot links to the descendants of the ancient Welsh kings, the Norman invasion, Iolo Morgannwg and more. You'll even find an arrow slit in the lounge and another in the ground floor wet room wall.

Cleverly converted and architect designed, this home uses green energy and is insulated with sheep's wool. It's a surprisingly modern and comfortable home for a small family or a couple of friends here to make the most of its idyllic rural setting. By day, explore the farm thanks to a trail that starts at your door, visiting cattle and spotting wildlife as you go. If you're a keen cyclist, you're within striking distance of the Afan Forest and Bike Park Wales, with safe storage for your equipment.

Just an eight-minute drive from the town of Pontardawe and less than half an hour from Swansea, you'll feel as though this fairytale setting is tucked well away from the rest of the world.

Further afield you’ll find the charming market town of Monmouth a fifteen-minute drive away. The home is blissfully quiet, with nothing but the occasional bleat of sheep or whinny of a horse in the surrounding fields. Out here, away from it all, you can see the canopy of stars from the private garden. During the day, this spot is perfect for a family barbecue, with dining on the patio. Inside, it’s open-plan living made cosy with a wood-burning stove set in the old stone wall of the living room. Period features like the old timber frame and arrow-slit windows have been retained, showing off the age of the building. The Aga and Belfast sink in the kitchen keep that farmhouse feel, perfect when paired with farm-fresh produce from the hole-in-the-wall farm shop just down the road.

This is a level of design you might not necessarily expect from a sleepy part of coastal Devon – but that's part of the home's beauty. Part of a former 16th century farmhouse, this cute home in the Somerset countryside is perfect for a peaceful escape. Secluded and intimate, it has a homely vibe that's made for couples on a romantic getaway.

If you do visit in the summer, you'll love dining alfresco on the table in the courtyard. If you love the thought of drifting to sleep while gazing up at the stars, this dreamy cabin could be the holiday home for you. The cabin is tucked away in a lush garden in a romantic setting that will make you instantly forget any of the worries of day-to-day life. It’s a studio-style cabin with one wall entirely made of glass, blending the interior and exterior. A skylight above the bed means you’ll go to sleep each night staring straight up at the stars. 

The cabin is based just outside of Launceston in Cornwall, close to the border of Devon. It’s brilliantly located for outdoorsy adventures, whether you’re keen on surfing or prefer to explore the countryside on foot. Dartmoor National Park is twenty-seven minutes away by car, with its wealth of wonderful hikes and cycling trails. You might take a day-trip to St Isaac to paddle in the sea and eat fish and chips and ice cream at the shore – it takes forty-three minutes to drive there, and it’s well worth the trip. 

After a day of exploring Cornwall and its gems, you can look forward to sipping wine on the terrace. Perhaps you’ll cook dinner on the barbecue before enjoying a relaxing bubble bath in the beautiful copper tub. Or to take the romance to the next level, you might soak in the hot tub under the stars. It’s impossible to leave here feeling stressed out.

Our Cabin

This home in Watchet is ideal if you're looking for a seaside getaway. It backs right onto the pebbled shores, and the rear garden has a beach hut and easy access to the coast. Indoors, the second bedroom boasts views of the sea – imagine waking up each morning to the sound of crashing waves. The living area is cosy, the kitchen has everything you'll need (though there isn't a washing machine), and there's a dining nook for meals at home. Location-wise, you're just a short stroll from Watchet's eateries and museums, an easy drive from Dunster Castle, and close to panoramic coastal walks.

Deep in the Somerset countryside, this cottage feels like a magical hideaway. Located in the tiny hamlet of Atherstone, this Grade II listed farmhouse stands out with its thatched roof, beautiful stonework, and trailing foliage on its exterior walls. The large fireplace, exposed masonry, flagstone floors, and timber beams are some of our favourite features, but your host goes the extra mile to make it even more special. With fluffy bathrobes and a seriously high thread count on the bedding, you can’t help but notice luxury all around. You can even have a private chef come over and cook your dinner. If you don’t fancy a Sunday roast, light up the barbecue in the lush back garden on a sunny day. The quiet country lanes lead two miles to the nearby town of Ilminster where you can stock up on fresh, local produce and immerse yourself in rural culture. And as part of rural culture, you’ll have to take a trip to the pub to sample some fine English ales.

From the home it's a five-minute walk to the cliff railway and the bars and shops of Lynton and Lynmouth. There are also many walking trails in the area, The South West Coast Path is very easily accessible, or you could hop in the car and head inland to explore the quant villages and moorlands of Exmoor National Park.

Or up the ante and take off into the beautiful wilds of Dartmoor National Park and the Tamar Valley (both less than half an hour's drive away) – you’re perfectly placed equidistance from them both.

Wisteria creeps up the beautiful hamstone facade and the Grade II listed features have been carefully retained. Stepping inside the cottage, it’s surprisingly modern with a long, Scandi-chic dining table for ten at the centre of the open living space (there's dining for sixteen in the conservatory). Comfy blue sofas sit in front of the old hearth, now home to a wood-burning stove, and the kitchen is blissfully modern yet retains a country-style charm. Tuck yourself away in the family snug, set around the big TV for a movie night. Or, head outside and make the most of the fabulous grounds. The cottage itself has a private space with a wood-fired hot tub overlooking the fields and a big outdoor dining table for sunny evening barbecues. The surrounding landscape provides miles of stunning countryside to explore either by foot or bike, and local produce and wholesome meals can be found in pubs and grocery stores in the nearby town.

Inside, the large open living space is homey and modern, creating a comforting place for you to unwind after a day walking the South West Coastal Path. Speaking of the tide, spend a day on the sands of Grunta Beach, or visit Woolacombe, where you can try your hand at surfing and paddleboarding. There are endless hiking trails in the area too, so pull on your walking boots and set about this AONB’s abundant surroundings.

Renovated to the highest standards by the current owners, this gorgeous former rectory is the perfect place for a large family retreat. Dating back to the seventeenth century, the home is built from local honey-coloured stone and faces south across the Somerset countryside. Seven acres of grounds are dotted with chestnut trees and rolling lawns, while there’s also a children’s play area, a heated swimming pool and a croquet lawn, so there's no risk of running out of things to do. During the summer, the terraces are particularly inviting, while the clear skies provide fantastic stargazing opportunities come nighttime. Meanwhile, in winter, the thought of a brisk walk followed by lunch at the local pub is hard to resist — heading straight north from the property will get you to the pretty brooks that run off the River Cary, while the nearby villages of Corton Denham and Babcary are both home to excellent watering holes. The idyllic market town of Castle Cary is a ten-minute drive away, and just beyond that lies Bruton, which has been quietly remaking itself as a haven for artists, foodies and creatives. Located between the two towns, The Newt in Somerset is an extensive country estate, complete with fascinating cider-making and gardening exhibits, a Roman villa museum and plenty of parkland to explore.

Within the sprawling grounds of this Georgian manor home, the only neighbours you’re likely to come across are a couple of llamas, ponies and a waddle of ducks. Classic walled gardens, orchards, vast lawns and pastures make up the ten acres of grounds. Exploring, you’ll find a private swimming pool surrounded by rattan furniture for a drink or two and an outdoor bar and cooking area with a wood-fired pizza oven. There’s also a barn that can be dappled with fairy lights for a special celebration and a former coach house that’s been turned into a dedicated cinema and games room. 

Accommodation is spread across the main house, which dates back to the 18th century, and a separate cottage with its own farmhouse-style kitchen and cosy living room. In the main house, the ground floor is everything you expect from an updated Georgian manor – a library-like sitting room, a grand lounge with gilded mirrors and chandeliers, oil paintings adorning the hallway walls, and a big, bright dining and sitting room looking out over the gardens. The kitchen is a vision of farmhouse charm, with a purring Aga at its centre. 

But, we have to say, the real surprise is the subterranean ‘club’ area. Descend the stairs to find a private, fully-stocked bar and VIP-style velvet booths. It’s the perfect place to host a special event without disturbing the neighbours (or lack thereof).

A cabin in the woods reimagined, this home belongs in the centrefold of a magazine. Traditional wooden panelling adds a rustic feel to this home, but it's nicely contrasted with a stylish monochrome palette and huge floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook a colourful sensory garden and pond. It's easy to spend an afternoon sitting on the south-facing deck, enjoying the peace of the Welsh countryside and keeping an eye out for the swallows, swifts, ducks and frogs living their lives on the water — even an otter has been spotted in the grounds by previous guests. After a stroll among the greenery, unwind with a glass of wine in front of the log burner or head up to the snug in the mezzanine with a well-thumbed book. Venturing out, two sandy beaches, Norman castles and a few quaint cafes await in the village of Llansteffan, which can be reached in eight minutes by car. Also close by is Green Castle Woods – about a five-minute drive – which is perfect for afternoon strolls through ancient woodlands. Or, ten minutes in the opposite direction lies Carmarthen, believed to be the oldest town in Wales – head there for places to eat, drink and shop aplenty.
