Part of a manor that dates back to the sixteenth century, this beautiful listed barn conversion is not your average country cottage. With enough design credentials for a magazine spread, the home mixes old and new with aplomb. Gather in the grand room to see a space with cathedral-like ceilings and antler chandeliers, with pops of bright modernity from the aquamarine walls and huge pieces of artwork hanging on the walls. There are cosier spots too, including bedrooms that have been tucked up in the rafters ensuring a snug night's sleep, as well as a log-burning fire in the second living room. Comprised of two adjoining barns, the home has got enough room to seat the entire party, with two kitchens for whipping up a feast — ask ahead and the owners will provide you with eggs from the grounds' chickens. Outside, there's a private covered hot tub, a barbecue area and pretty walled gardens to explore, but beyond the gates, one of England's most beautiful counties awaits — Cranbourne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in less than fifteen minutes by car, as can the architecturally unique town of Blandford Forum.

Hammoon Manor

Sitting peacefully in the grounds of a private home, this former granary has been transformed into a cosy rural retreat. Inside, you’ll find plenty of charm and character as well as all the home comforts you could need for a relaxing stay – including a wood-burning stove. There’s also a wonderful garden and you’ll have access to the owner’s heated swimming pool during the summer months. Private parking is available and it’s possible to walk to the nearest pub and shop. It’s also just a short drive to Glastonbury and the Polden Hills. 

The Lila 

Set against a backdrop of rolling Somerset countryside, this spacious farmhouse is made for memorable gatherings. Inside, you’ll find warm, characterful interiors, multiple lounges to spread out in, and a generous dining space for long, laughter-filled meals. The country kitchen is a cook’s dream, while bedrooms spread across the main house and annexe offer privacy and comfort in equal measure. Come evening, head out to the garden for a soak in the hot tub, a movie on the outdoor TV, or just a glass of something sparkling under the stars. Whether you're here for a celebration or simply to reconnect, this home makes it easy to slow down and savour the moment.

Somerset Haven

The Somerset countryside welcomes you for a romantic escape over the rolling hills. With your own secluded lodge, lap up contemporary living with a stylish space that still allows you to feel at one with the surrounding nature. Offering a unique stay, far from the daily bump and grind, experience living in a wooden lodge without compromising home luxuries. On sunny days, step out onto the terrace for a farm-to-table breakfast before relaxing on the sun loungers with a book in hand. The large private terrace takes you from bathing in the sun to a lovely little coffee spot at the table and chairs, over to the hot tub, and finally to a shaded large dining area for starlit evening dinners. Inside the lodge, an open layout allows the compact space to feel quite the opposite – cook up a full English breakfast in the kitchen before exploring the local area. The eco-cottage is surrounded by layers of Somerset countryside, perfect for exploring. After long hikes, settle down for a romantic aperitif featuring strawberries and champagne. Stroll around Stawberryfield park's orchard before sampling local ales and cider in the Cider Barn. If you're open to going further afield, hop in the car to discover the cathedral city of Wells, just an eighteen-minute drive away. With the spa town of Bath also only a fifty-minute drive away, you may also wish to indulge in a spot of retail therapy. After a day of exploring, return to the lodge and slip into the hot tub as dusk sets in and the stars come out. Every day spent here guarantees a relaxing experience from start to finish. 


Strawberry Fields Forever

Escaping into the English countryside for a weekend (or two) is exactly the sort of thing Trailblazer Cottage was made for. This is a beautifully intimate retreat for two, perfect for those who love the idea of taking short trips to the neighbouring towns and sampling the farmers' markets in and around Cheddar — but it's also perfect for those who just want to relax. Staying here might make you change your adventurous plans and simply lounge on the decked terrace with a good book and a glass of nice wine, contemplating whether three sessions in the hot tub per day is just a little too much. It isn't. With a variety of fresh seasonal produce on offer in the area, every meal can be special and you've got a modern metro-tiled kitchen to try them all out. When the weather is less than Mediterranean, stay indoors and test the swanky pedestal bathtub for a spa-like experience and enjoy a movie night on the cosy sofa. When the weather permits, you can admire the sunset and sunrise from every room in the house as well. Light pours in through the French doors, extending the living space out to the great outdoors. Speaking of, go hiking along the sublime Cheddar Gorge, only a six-minute drive from home. It's well worth a trip. 

Trailblazer Cottage

This modern eco-lodge combines the typical countryside retreat with contemporary mod-cons and tech to create the perfect weekend away, where nothing but a little rest and relaxation will do. With plenty of nooks to hide and read inside and out, as well as the fully functional outdoor hot tub entirely at your disposal, you'll feel far removed from the fuss and flutter of your busy schedules in no time at all. There's also a leather chaise indoors and a chic open-plan kitchen-come-diner where you can tackle a few easy recipes with the help of the local produce. The living space is a bright and airy spot to unwind, with its high ceilings, dramatic spotlighting and French doors. Upon sliding these doors, you'll step onto a decked out terrace with a couple of trendy Acapulco chairs and a starlight canopied roof – it's calling out for alfresco drinks come evening. On top of all that, there's even a swanky freestanding bathtub for those rainy day hot tub alternatives. If you can peel yourself away from this sanctuary of calm, take a wander around the farmers' markets in the nearby village of Draycott. Or else, go for a morning walk through the Strawberry Fields Park, or venture out on an exporative day spent hiking up Cheddar Gorge, only a short seven-minute drive from home – cameras at the ready, the views here are sublime. And after a day spent embracing the great outdoors, retreat to the cosy living room sofa for a movie night in and prepare for another day of doing very little. Just the way we like it. 

Magical Sunset

This unique home nestled in the Swansea Valley is the ideal place to begin your adventures in south Wales. With easy access to both the Brecon Beacons National Park and the coast, you'll love spending your downtime in these wonderfully peaceful surroundings. 

It was used as a cart house when first built, but has since been totally revamped by award-winning Rio Architects. The result is a splendid home that combines contemporary minimalism with some traditional touches – the hosts have even added some Welsh-themed artworks for you to admire. And, if you head outside, you'll find a patio area where you can sip drinks in the sunshine – look out for the magic stone tree built on one of the walls.

The popular Plas Farm Trail passes right by the cottage's front door, and a short road leads you down to the banks of the River Clydach then into a private bluebell wood. A twenty-minute car ride will bring you to the Brecon Beacons, where you can try your hand at a range of outdoor activities including rock climbing and kayaking. And, if you fancy a day at the seaside, you can drive to the Gower Peninsula in forty minutes to discover hidden beaches. 

Tales from the Mabinogion

Bursting with character, this Stogursey cottage is as cosy as it looks. On winter days, snuggle up in front of the log burner, while summer evenings call for sundowners in the quaint garden. Of course, with the traditional charm comes a few eccentricities, mainly the twisting staircase and low beamed ceilings. Scenic walking trails through the Quantock Hills are practically on your doorstep – perfect for strolls with the pups in tow. Further afield, Taunton and Glastonbury are within easy driving distance, offering fun for the whole family.

Rural Rendezvous

This home is the ideal starting point for exploring Somerset. On your doorstep are acres of fields and footpaths through the countryside, while Cheddar Gorge is a twenty-minute drive away. Is the beach more your style? Head to Burnham-on-Sea, just 2 miles away. You'll also find plenty to love back home. The garden is an idyllic spot for sundowners, and the pizza oven and barbecue are perfect for entertaining. Between the five bedrooms and large living area, there's ample space inside to stretch out and relax. All in all, we think this is a fantastic option for a family getaway.

Somerset Apples

This exquisitely renovated bakehouse provides a sweet escape amidst the glorious rolling hills and wooded valleys of East Devon. It sits in the lovely village of Musbury, within walking distance of the local shop and pub and just a twelve-minute drive from Lyme Regis and its spectacular Jurassic coastline. 

The interior strikes the perfect balance between contemporary comfort and authentic charm. Look closely, and you'll spot ample inklings of this home's storied past, from the beam-clad ceilings to the Juliet balcony, where flour bags were once hauled from the loft below. On the first floor, the open-plan living area is blessed by heaps of natural light, offering a free-flowing canvas of calm with lofty vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors and partially exposed stone walls. Plush sofas huddle around the wood-burning fireplace – a lovely space for chilly evenings – while the fully-equipped kitchen and diner offer direct access to the garden. Enclosed for privacy and boasting a lush lawn, the outdoor space beckons you to unwind in the fresh air. Let the dog roam free here and, after long walks through the countryside, fire up the barbecue and gather on the pretty terrace for a delicious alfresco feast.

The Old Bakery

Part of a former 16th century farmhouse, this cute home in the Somerset countryside is perfect for a peaceful escape. Secluded and intimate, it has a homely vibe that's made for couples on a romantic getaway. 

A fireplace and wood burning stove create a cosy ambiance, supported by the low-vaulted wooden beams and comfy sofa. Whether you're visiting in the glorious months of summer or the romantic winter season, the living room is a snug place to settle with a cup of hot chocolate or tea.

If you do visit in the summer, you'll love dining alfresco on the table in the courtyard. Share toast in the mornings, complemented by a cup of coffee, before moving on to a glass of cava in the evenings. Picturesque and quiet, the only sounds you'll hear are the birds singing in the skies above. 

If you fancied spreading your legs further than the courtyard, you'll reach the award-winning pubs in Broadway in just a few minutes' walk. Slightly further up the road, the quaint town Ilminster can be reached in five minutes by car – here, you'll find coffee shops, vintage stores and inviting cafes.

Apple of our Eye

This glamorous modern home offers a different kind of country living. Right by the Mendip Hills, a certified Area of Outstanding Beauty, and a five-minute drive from the town of Cheddar – famed for it's epic gorge as well as a certain cheese – it's one of the recently built, state-of-the-art lodges on a complex in a pretty, rural spot. With a feeling of seclusion and views over the hills, you might forget you're conveniently close to the shops and restaurants of the town.

Steering clear of the traditional style of lodge homes, this place is chic and glamorous, with contemporary timber cladding, a glossy black kitchen and comfy, modern furnishings. We love the L-shaped deck, where you'll find your private hot tub and a secret covered area which comes into its at night – just wait until you switch on the starlight roof. But there's even more to love indoors, with a cosy log burner for winter stays and a fabulous bathroom with a big, freestanding bath and a walk-in rainfall shower. Perfect for couples, this place is great if you're a fan of country walks and moonlit dips (and who isn't?).
