Stone floors, whitewashed walls and thick oak doors house the open plan living area, complete with a high-spec kitchen with an electric Aga, a cosy sitting room where you can curl up on the armchair with a book off the shelf, and a wooden dining table with ornate chairs. Set on the banks of the River Isle, this mill in deepest Somerset was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Close to a thousand years later, part of it still stands and is ideal for holidaymakers looking for a unique rural escape. The internal shell of the building has been kept much the same as it would have looked in the fifteenth century and you certainly get a sense of that with the wooden staircases, exposed stonework and a preserved waterwheel in the attic bedroom. Thankfully, plenty of modern amenities have been added, including a log-burning fire, a country kitchen and a vintage roll-top bathtub that's a relative whippersnapper in comparison to the house itself. In the surrounding grounds, guests can wander about the working farm to meet the animals that also call it home, followed by kayaking and swimming in the river or a bike ride along the adjoining National Cycle Route 33. This being Somerset, there's plenty of countryside walks nearby, as well as cider mills for when you've worked up a thirst.

During the colder months, the wood-burning stove provides the perfect atmosphere for a night in, and the fact that the cabin is encased in glass from two sides means that you'll always have a great view of the countryside. The nearby village of Holcombe Rogus has lots of beautiful nature to explore. However, it's a great jumping-off point for trips further afield. The city of Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away if you want to spend an afternoon in a more urban environment, while day trips to the stunning beaches of the north and south coasts are well within reach, as are Exmoor and Dartmoor national parks.

Set on a quiet country lane, this 17th century, Grade II-listed farmhouse makes a wonderful holiday retreat in the heart of rural Somerset. Traditional features of the home have been partnered with luxurious interior furnishings, that maintain a high quality and provide excellent comfort for a snug stay in the countryside. We particularly love the stained glass window in the living room which serves as the gateway from the rustic lounge area, out to the stunning garden at the back. Original stone floorings, low ceilings and exposed wooden beams add oodles of character and personality to the home, while the wood-fired hot tub and living room stove bring the family together and provide a warming atmosphere. The house is surrounded by farmland but the nearby town provides local produce and delicious meals out. The landscape is sublime for country walks and adventures out to discover the local historical sights. If cycling is your thing, there's no better way to explore the myriad of local country lanes and villages than by bicycle. Stop off at Dennis China Works (a fifteen-minute ride away) for a pit stop in the tea rooms or why not visit one of the local cider producers' orchards and presses to see how it's made? Perry’s Cider in Dowlish Wake, for example, is only fifteen minutes away by bicycle or a six-minute drive away in the car.

• You'll come across three pubs within walking distance and a network of public footpaths through the fields for your dog. 
• A short twenty-five-minute walk will see you arrive at the Somerset Cider Brandy orchards, where you can tour the mill and shop, hike up the famous Burrow Hill and enjoy a tipple from the infamous Glastonbury Cider Bus, serving every weekend throughout the summer. 
• Wander in the other direction and you'll soon discover Flying Pig Cider and their open-air orchard cafe. 
• Within a twenty-minute drive are the picture-perfect villages of Ilminster, South Petherton and Langport – dotted with coffee shops and independent boutiques.

Pack a few great books for late nights in the cosy living room and comfortable walking shoes in order to explore the natural beauty of the rolling countryside. If you don’t fancy a Sunday roast, light up the barbecue in the lush back garden on a sunny day. The quiet country lanes lead two miles to the nearby town of Ilminster where you can stock up on fresh, local produce and immerse yourself in rural culture. And as part of rural culture, you’ll have to take a trip to the pub to sample some fine English ales.

The crenulated, columned Victorian face of this home is a far cry from a typical, rustic farmhouse. The interior is manor home in miniature with chesterfields around an original fireplace in the main living room, long darkwood dining tables by the bay window, and chandeliers lighting huge bedrooms. Each room retains an element of Victoriana. Attached to the farmhouse, the old cider shed is the kind of country-rustic you’d expect  – flagstone floors in the kitchen, timber beams exposed in eaves bedrooms and a wood-burning in the master suite. The real highlight is the wood-fired hot tub outside beneath the pergola. It looks out over the beautifully manicured gardens, bursting with lavender and colourful hydrangea. If you’re not dining in the grand room inside, head out to the Italian-style loggia where dining is set for the whole group beneath a wooden roof. You’re in the middle of the West Country’s farmland here, with walking trails on your doorstep. But the charming market town of Bridgewater is just a fifteen-minute drive away.

Sitting in the sprawling grounds of a family-owned manor house, this cute cottage is the Somerset countryside idyll. Wisteria creeps up the beautiful hamstone facade and the Grade II listed features have been carefully retained. Stepping inside the cottage, it’s surprisingly modern with a long, Scandi-chic dining table for ten at the centre of the open living space (there's dining for sixteen in the conservatory). Comfy blue sofas sit in front of the old hearth, now home to a wood-burning stove, and the kitchen is blissfully modern yet retains a country-style charm. Tuck yourself away in the family snug, set around the big TV for a movie night. Or, head outside and make the most of the fabulous grounds. The cottage itself has a private space with a wood-fired hot tub overlooking the fields and a big outdoor dining table for sunny evening barbecues. The surrounding landscape provides miles of stunning countryside to explore either by foot or bike, and local produce and wholesome meals can be found in pubs and grocery stores in the nearby town.

Gather your ensemble for a feast in the grand mid-night blue dining area. The two living and dining rooms are bright and light, each with a wood burner and plenty of logs to keep things cosy. Each bedroom has been individually styled with a blend of navy and sage green walls, and you'll find modern up-cycled furniture throughout to make you feel like you’re in a boutique hotel. If you fancy a tipple, there's a well-stocked honesty bar. The cottages are set within three acres of private land made up of rolling green hills, flower-filled meadows and tree-studded, landscaped gardens. It's utterly idyllic and you’ll struggle to tear yourself away – but if you can muster up the energy, the bustling market town of Honiton is around six miles away, and Branscombe Beach is a thirty-minute drive from home.

Set in the rolling Somerset countryside outside Ilminster (a three-minute drive), this home epitomises the phrase “sitting pretty”. A honey-hued facade is covered with roses, like a storybook cottage. Though grand bedrooms with sleigh beds and lots of space are more manor house than country cottage. Downstairs, the cosy sitting room is set around a wood-burning in the old hearth and there’s a second family snug with bean bags and a squashy sofa, ideal for film nights. The kitchen is a vision of modernity with its big breakfast island to accommodate the bustle of family mealtimes and dining takes place in the conservatory area overlooking the sprawling grounds. Stepping outside you’ll find a sweeping, manicured lawn and wooden climbing frame for the kids to run free, and patio dining for the whole group courtesy of a charcoal barbecue should the weather allow. Our favourite part? The wood-fired hot tub hidden between the trees and looking out over the fields and woodland.

Undeniably tasteful and boasting a rustic-chic look, this home may be quaint in aesthetic but it delivers some modern comforts that we love, including sleek bathrooms and sumptuous beds that will leave you well rested. Your hosts have also gone the extra mile in providing a welcome hamper, which includes some essentials, cakes, and local produce. You’ll need the energy for those long country walks or cycles, although knowing you'll come back to such a cosy home, you'll be motivated to walk that extra mile. For a memorable day trip out, head to the Jurassic Coast for fossil hunting and fish and chips on the beach.

Felicity Orchard is a private affair. The huge enclosed garden offers stunning green views over the surrounding fields, as well as several hangouts where you can put your feet up and relax — from the little dining spot to the luxurious jacuzzi (this is covered, so you can enjoy the water and the fresh air whatever the weather). You'll also be sharing your space with some beautiful flowering fruit trees, so you're more than encouraged to grab an apple in the morning when the season is right. The insides are all open-plan so that you always have the best natural light, and in the evenings, you can curl up with a good book by the wood-burning stove when the weather is chilly. Nearby, you’ll find the beginning of the Grand Union Canal, which makes for a great walk. As you can see, there's always plenty to do in the area, but you can also drive to Exeter if you're in the mood for some urban exploration.
