However, staying in is no less fun, especially with the outdoor hot tub bubbling away in the background. The wrap-around terrace is a great place to put your feet up and relax on the loungers or even a spot of alfresco dining while you watch the sun go down. When the weather isn't playing ball, pick up some local produce from the nearby shops and use the well-equipped kitchen to whip up a speciality or two. This home also boasts two luxuriously cosy bedrooms with green views that will help you recharge and prepare for another day of kicking back and relaxing.

Heron's Nest

One glance at the rolling countryside from the wrap-around deck, and you'll see why. Come together for lazy breakfasts in the sociable kitchen and dining area with the patio doors slid right back to let the sunshine in. Pad out onto the deck to soak away the morning in the hot tub. Sneak back to the king-sized bed with a freshly brewed coffee and a good book. Or fire up the barbecue and gather your troops for some alfresco dining. Wherever you choose to be, those stunning vistas will be right there. And when the great outdoors finally comes calling, you won't have far to go. Set within a 14-acre estate, pop your wellies on and explore the surrounding verdant landscape. Or jump in the car for a stroll around the charming village of Cheddar (less than ten minutes drive). And a little further, the historic city of Wells (twenty-minute drive) - home to a picturesque cathedral, the beautiful Bishop's Palace, and a twice-weekly farmer's market for all the cheese and cider you could muster.

Locally, there’s fun for all the family with Puxton Adventure Park, Longleat Safari Park, and Cheddar Gorge, to name just a few of the must-visit attractions. 

Somerset Serenity

No trip to Somerset is complete without a visit to Cheddar Gorge, and from this home, you can be there in less than ten minutes. Perfect for families who love the great outdoors, it's a modern eco lodge on a small, rural park development. Spacious and well laid-out, it's been designed to make life as easy as possible – leaving you nothing to do but sit back and enjoy your break. A wheelchair-friendly ramp leads up to the entrance and the wraparound deck, where you can not only eat outside and relax on the sun loungers, you can also spend some quality time in your private hot tub to the rear. Inside, it's bright and open, with comfortable furnishings and a home from home feel. We love the kitchen and dining area, opening to the deck and fully equipped with everything you'll need to cook up family meals at home. Stroll through the communal gardens and the orchard, or explore further afield – the Mendips Way hiking trail passes close by and Wells is just a twenty-minute drive. 

Dwell on the Deck

Get Cosy is a perfect little spot to escape to when you need a few days out in nature. This eco-friendly lodge, furnished with high-quality furniture and amenities is located in the heart of the Somerset countryside — far away from the hustle and bustle of any big city. The patio offers lively views and will hopefully help you decide on where to go for a walk and when you come back, soak in the jacuzzi and then cook a delicious meal in the well-equipped kitchen. The wrap-around terrace is also furnished with a barbecue and a hanging chair, so in the warmer months, most of your time will be spent outside. In the evening, make a dent in your watch list with the help of the big screen TV and then retreat to the luxurious bedroom. 

Get Cosy

This modern eco-lodge combines the typical countryside retreat with contemporary mod-cons and tech to create the perfect weekend away, where nothing but a little rest and relaxation will do. With plenty of nooks to hide and read inside and out, as well as the fully functional outdoor hot tub entirely at your disposal, you'll feel far removed from the fuss and flutter of your busy schedules in no time at all. There's also a leather chaise indoors and a chic open-plan kitchen-come-diner where you can tackle a few easy recipes with the help of the local produce. The living space is a bright and airy spot to unwind, with its high ceilings, dramatic spotlighting and French doors. Upon sliding these doors, you'll step onto a decked out terrace with a couple of trendy Acapulco chairs and a starlight canopied roof – it's calling out for alfresco drinks come evening. On top of all that, there's even a swanky freestanding bathtub for those rainy day hot tub alternatives. If you can peel yourself away from this sanctuary of calm, take a wander around the farmers' markets in the nearby village of Draycott. Or else, go for a morning walk through the Strawberry Fields Park, or venture out on an exporative day spent hiking up Cheddar Gorge, only a short seven-minute drive from home – cameras at the ready, the views here are sublime. And after a day spent embracing the great outdoors, retreat to the cosy living room sofa for a movie night in and prepare for another day of doing very little. Just the way we like it. 

Magical Sunset

A family retreat in Somerset should be all about bringing everyone together, and with a cosy cottage like this, reconnecting is easy. Set in the middle of fourteen acres of woodlands with a small orchard on-site, walking in any direction will take you on an adventure – after all, the Mendip Hills is home to lots of wildlife and gorgeous picnic spots, while the village of Cheddar and its famous gorge are just a five-minute drive away. Inside, there's a cosy living space, a fully-stocked kitchen and two sumptuous bedrooms. This home is not lacking mod-cons, either – there's a DVD player, a Bose Bluetooth speaker and sleek rain showers in the en-suite bathrooms. But we expect you'll be spending as much time outdoors as indoors, especially since the wrap-around deck is the best place to soak up the views. Fire up the built-in barbecue with the fare you picked up at the nearby farmer's market and enjoy an alfresco feast in the fresh air. When the sun goes down, nothing beats bubbling in the hot tub with a glass of fizz under the stars. When the air turns chilly, sprawl out on the squishy sofas for a family movie night, popcorn and a cup of hot chocolate in hand.

This delightful home is a haven of sustainable luxury. It’s in the heart of Somerset, close to woodland and countryside yet within easy reach of historic cities including Bath and Wells. This home is part of a 450-acre gated estate and boasts a balcony and a hot tub. You can look forward to high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen space designed with socialising in mind. The kitchen has top-of-the-range appliances and a chic island, so whipping up family meals is a breeze. 

The Woodland Haven

Nestled at the foot of the Mendip Hills, this eco-lodge was designed with the view in mind – one glance at the rolling countryside from the wrap-around deck and you'll see what we mean. Morning, afternoon or evening, the scenery is sure to take your breath away. Perfect for families, there's plenty of space inside and out to get cosy. On summer days, enjoy alfresco meals in the sunshine or laze on the sun loungers with a good book and glass of wine. Our favourite part, however, is the bubbling hot tub. In the evenings, soak your troubles away with a dip under the stars – turn on the LED lighting to set the mood. Even inside, you can make the most of the view, thanks to the French doors. It's warm and inviting, especially when the wood-burning stove is lit. Snuggle up for a family movie night on the squishy sofas – there's a DVD player and a selection of films to choose from – before retiring to the sumptuous bedrooms. Be sure to pack your walking boots. Not only are there trails and an orchard inside the park to explore, but Strawberry Line and Cheddar Gorge are both a short drive away. Or, head into the village of Cheddar for cafes, pubs and local cheese shops – it's a five-minute drive away.

Cheddar Gorge

High-end furniture, lavish amenities, sunken hot tub – this couple's cottage has the 'wow' factor in spades. The first thing you'll notice is the wrap-around deck, which boasts a comfy rattan sofa, an alfresco eating area and a few loungers where you can really put your feet up and relax. It's the perfect spot to indulge in some sunset wining and dining, followed by a soak in the private hot tub as the stars twinkle in the expansive sky above you. 

Inside, you'll find deep shades of mulberry and little touches of luxury everywhere you look – a wine fridge in the kitchen keeps bottles of bubbly perfectly chilled, a crackling wood-burner in the living area is ideal for wintery evenings, and the sumptuous free-standing bathtub is an excellent way to unwind after a hike through the Somerset countryside.

Speaking of exploring, be sure to pack your walking shoes – this area is rife with outdoor adventures. Cheddar Gorge, just ten minutes away by car, is the most well-known spot, but you can start your expeditions much closer to home with some birdwatching at the wildlife reserves or a wander down the West Mendip Way, which runs right past the park. For cheese shops, pubs and restaurants, head to Cheddar village – a ten-minute drive away.

Gooseberry Field

This glamorous modern home offers a different kind of country living. Right by the Mendip Hills, a certified Area of Outstanding Beauty, and a five-minute drive from the town of Cheddar – famed for it's epic gorge as well as a certain cheese – it's one of the recently built, state-of-the-art lodges on a complex in a pretty, rural spot. With a feeling of seclusion and views over the hills, you might forget you're conveniently close to the shops and restaurants of the town.

Steering clear of the traditional style of lodge homes, this place is chic and glamorous, with contemporary timber cladding, a glossy black kitchen and comfy, modern furnishings. We love the L-shaped deck, where you'll find your private hot tub and a secret covered area which comes into its at night – just wait until you switch on the starlight roof. But there's even more to love indoors, with a cosy log burner for winter stays and a fabulous bathroom with a big, freestanding bath and a walk-in rainfall shower. Perfect for couples, this place is great if you're a fan of country walks and moonlit dips (and who isn't?).
