There’s no better way to embrace the ethereal Somerset countryside around Glastonbury than staying in a converted church. In the evening, the stained-glass windows of this gothic church still glow against the landscape, as a roaring wood-burning stove warms up the open living space inside. 30-foot, knaved ceilings inside let the chatter of good times rise to the Gods and there’s a banquet-sized dining table for the whole group on the mezzanine level. Admire the rose stained-glass windows as you sup. 

The kitchen is tucked away and has everything you need for self-catering One of our favourite spots is the sunroom, set with tables and chairs for an idyllic afternoon tea. Either that or the hand-painted claw-foot tub in the main bathroom – ideal for a soak after hiking up Glastonbury Tor. Or, soak the day away in the outdoor hot tub.

This church is tucked into the hamlet of East Horrington, a ten-minute drive from the Cathedral town of Wells where you’ll find shops, cafés and plenty of places to eat. It’s a twenty-minute drive to Glastonbury and the countryside in between is full of walking and cycling trails to explore.

Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit might instantly think of this as The Shire, but you don’t have to travel to Hobbiton in New Zealand when this haven is waiting for you right on the outskirts of the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Beauty. With a restaurant and shop right on site, you’d have little reason to leave, but we do recommend a trip through Cheddar Gorge, a short drive away. 

With a host of hiking trails, you can also imagine yourself off on an adventure as you walk through the countryside, returning home to enjoy a couple of pastries with coffee at the breakfast bar. 

Wander through the round, fairy-lit door and towards the garden area, where you can enjoy meals alfresco at the picnic bench or spend nights under the starry sky in the wood-fired hot tub. 

Grab a bite to eat at the on-site cafe after a session in the shared gym and book yourself in for a spa treatment as a gift to yourself. Golfers can head to The Mendip Golf Club – minutes away by car – whilst the rest of the family search the garden for fairies or get cosy under throws on the sofa reading about faraway lands.

If you’re looking for a group retreat that combines luxury accommodation with a mystical quality then, abracadabra! This is the one. Influenced by its proximity to Glastonbury (five minutes from the town centre), with its witchcraft myths and Arthurian legends, this home's defining characteristic is quirk, from the architectural details that resemble enchanted oak trees to the dedicated midnight badger-watching spot in the garden. However, while most esoteric accommodation tends to the tumbledown end of the rustic spectrum, this unusual abode is practically palatial. Everything is to the highest spec, including a sound system with ceiling speakers, large American-style fridge-freezer and memory foam mattresses. Originally a cottage dating back to 1580, it’s been substantially extended to add luxury bed-and-bath spaces – the master is our favourite, with its cocktail balcony and freestanding bath – and a ten-metre entertainment pod, with underfloor heating, a constellation ceiling, Bang & Olufsen widescreen TV and Wifi sound system. If you're staying for Glastonbury, a special festival package that includes free Sunday tickets can be arranged ahead of time. Your hosts can provide a welcome hamper full of locally sourced snacks, elderflower and still water upon request, or if you’re planning an extra special visit, they can wave a wand to arrange an in-house chef and full catering – perfect for that full-moon ceremony.

Quirky and stylish in equal measure, this unusual home is beyond the dreams of any Hobbit. Protected by its earthen mound, with a curved design and round windows, it's a perfect pod that's bound to be a hit with young families. It may be partially below ground but there's no roughing it here. Inside, it's been cleverly laid out to offer everything you could need in a neat package. There's a cosy sofa, a breakfast bar to eat at and a fabulous kitchen (how many Hobbits have a wine fridge?), along with three bedrooms and a shower room. But it's the outside space that has us longing to go back. Surrounded by the rolling fields of this working farm, you'll have your own patio with a private wood-fired hot tub, as well as a Finnish-style barbecue hut – perfect for grilling hot dogs or toasting marshmallows at any time of year. Elsewhere on the farm, let the kids run off some steam at the play area (complete with a miniature version of the underground homes), grab a bite to eat at the cafe and buy some local produce at the on-site farm shop.

This beautiful home, designed by an architect in the 60s, has views, location and mid century charm on its side, and it’s just waiting to welcome you on your next getaway. Only minutes away from Glastonbury high street, spend the morning exploring the quaint shops, sitting down for a coffee at one of the local cafes, and discovering crystals, Norse-inspired curios, and more. Of course, exploring the Tor is a must and although seeing St Michael’s Tower is a unique experience at any time of day, we especially recommend climbing the hill before dusk to watch the sun rise over the valley below. 

Back home, you’ll forget how close you are to town once you’ve settled into the seclusion on offer. Most likely due to the cocoon of natural vegetation and lush garden, but this home really does feel like your own little paradise, and nothing will highlight quite how idyllic it is like the sunken cedarwood hot tub after sun down. Stargaze in between bouts of laughter as you trade stories about the day’s adventures and simply enjoy the tranquillity of this beautiful space. 

Midcentury in Somerset

In the tranquil setting of the Mendip Hills, one of only forty-six places in the UK awarded the title 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty', this cosy lodge couldn’t be in a better location. With walking trails leading out to the hills, and the coastal plains of Somerset Levels just a twenty-five-minute drive away, it offers excellent opportunities for exploring the southern countryside. That said, we think you might be spending a lot of time at home. This wooden lodge might look understated, but the interiors are superbly stylish, modern, and playful. The golden patchwork sofa feels warm and homely, in perfect contrast to the sleek, grey kitchen. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the home with light, bringing the outside in – and thanks to certain luxury features, your host has made the 'great outdoors' into the 'fabulous outdoors'. Take in the fresh, country air on the sun loungers on the wrap-around decking. Or maybe you'd rather spend an evening under the star-studded sky in your private hot tub. Pop a bottle of English fizz in the wine cooler and relax under the sheltered, starlight roof – you've earned it.

Within the region, just four miles from Cheddar Gorge, and a twenty-five-minute drive to the coastal plains of Somerset Levels, this modern eco-cottage is simply immersed in natural beauty. Its wooden exterior blends in nicely with the woodlands and trails nearby, but there are a few features which are somewhat out of the ordinary for a rural escape. First off, the hot tub. Sitting atop your vast decking, alongside a barbecue, outdoor lounge, and shady alfresco dining table, this is the perfect place to de-stress in nature. After this jaw-dropping welcome to the home, swap the tub bubbles for a glass of champagne and take a look around the home. Understated yet stylish, we love the greys, greens, and blues in this sophisticated, natural colour palette. Thanks to huge, panoramic windows in the lounge, you can admire daily sunrises and sunsets from the comfort of the sofa if the weather doesn't hold up.

It’s been recently renovated with wood floors and floor-to-ceiling windows, and it boasts a charming blend of contemporary and antique furniture. If you like the idea of escaping the city for a charm-filled cottage, but could do without dusty beams and draughty doors, this is the right home for you. 

The cottage is warm and welcoming, the perfect setting for a romantic escape. Curl up on the sofa and admire the lush garden as you sip Champagne. When the weather is fine, open up the glass doors to create a stunning indoor/outdoor space. Whip up meals in the kitchen to enjoy outside in the garden, or fire up the barbecue for a real alfresco treat – you might like to walk to the nearby farm shop for local goodies to cook. Soak up the sunshine outside and enjoy the countryside views. In the evening, get cosy around the fire pit before sinking into the oh-so-comfortable bed upstairs. 

You could happily spend your days here, playing board games, reading, and admiring the garden, but if you do want to explore further afield, you have plenty of choice. The East Mendip Way passes right by the cottage, so bring your hiking boots if you want to get a bit closer to the Great Outdoors. It takes thirty-two minutes to drive to Bath, where you can admire the Roman Baths and explore the galleries, museums and theatres – not to mention the excellent array of eateries. Or perhaps you’ll just pootle around the countryside, popping into charming villages – Mells and Bruton are close by – and country pubs whenever the fancy strikes? Soho House members will enjoy its proximity to Babington House. However you spend your time here, you’ll love having such a delightful place to call home.

Tucked away amid seemingly endless open countryside in Somerset, this home is a little bit special. It’s part of a larger estate – which includes an animal rescue sanctuary – but it has its own driveway so it feels completely private. It’s been transformed into a guesthouse from the ancient outbuildings, and the result is a dreamy bohemian space. 

The house is hidden in 20 acres of private grounds in Lottisham, a rural hamlet in pretty Somerset. You’ll be able to explore the surrounding countryside on foot using the many lanes and footpaths – is there anything better than a crisp country stroll with friends, followed by an afternoon in front of a roaring fire? You’ve also got all of Somerset’s delights to discover by car. It takes eighteen minutes to drive to Glastonbury, where you can walk up to the Tor to take in the view, and shop in the quirky boutiques for crystals and tarot decks. Castle Cary and its charming cafes are sixteen minutes away, and it takes nineteen minutes to reach beautiful Bruton. 

That said you might find that you don’t want to leave the grounds at all. The house is elegant yet warm, full of rustic charm and modern luxuries – everything you need for a relaxing stay is to hand here. You’ll spend your time cooking delicious meals in the stunning kitchen, or playing games in one of the sitting rooms. The outside space is just as lovely, with a huge terrace and a barbecue that makes alfresco feasts in the summer an absolute dream. You’ll be planning your return trip even before reaching the end of the driveway.

Perfect for families who love the great outdoors, it's a modern eco lodge on a small, rural park development. Escaping into the English countryside for a weekend (or two) is exactly the sort of thing Trailblazer Cottage was made for. This is a beautifully intimate retreat for two, perfect for those who love the idea of taking short trips to the neighbouring towns and sampling the farmers' markets in and around Cheddar — but it's also perfect for those who just want to relax. Staying here might make you change your adventurous plans and simply lounge on the decked terrace with a good book and a glass of nice wine, contemplating whether three sessions in the hot tub per day is just a little too much. It isn't. With a variety of fresh seasonal produce on offer in the area, every meal can be special and you've got a modern metro-tiled kitchen to try them all out. When the weather is less than Mediterranean, stay indoors and test the swanky pedestal bathtub for a spa-like experience and enjoy a movie night on the cosy sofa. When the weather permits, you can admire the sunset and sunrise from every room in the house as well. Light pours in through the French doors, extending the living space out to the great outdoors. Speaking of, go hiking along the sublime Cheddar Gorge, only a six-minute drive from home. It's well worth a trip.

If you can peel yourself away from this sanctuary of calm, take a wander around the farmers' markets in the nearby village of Draycott. Or else, go for a morning walk through the Strawberry Fields Park, or venture out on an exporative day spent hiking up Cheddar Gorge, only a short seven-minute drive from home – cameras at the ready, the views here are sublime. It's warm and inviting, especially when the wood-burning stove is lit. Snuggle up for a family movie night on the squishy sofas – there's a DVD player and a selection of films to choose from – before retiring to the sumptuous bedrooms. Be sure to pack your walking boots. Not only are there trails and an orchard inside the park to explore, but Strawberry Line and Cheddar Gorge are both a short drive away. Or, head into the village of Cheddar for cafes, pubs and local cheese shops – it's a five-minute drive away.
