They have gone the extra mile to retain centuries-old features, including exposed stone walls and a gargoyle in the master bedroom, while introducing modern amenities that sit seamlessly within the space, creating a super chic country getaway. The open-plan ground floor is kitted out with a long dining table that makes for sociable evenings feasting on food prepared in the fully equipped kitchen. After dinner, grab a seat on the comfy sofa and settle in by the wood burner for the ultimate cosy evening. Climb the custom staircase up to the two double en-suite bedrooms (the twin is on the ground floor) with their unique wetroom style showers that are open to the room (so you better know your roommate pretty well). Wander down the track to Dyrham Park, one of the Cotswold's most stunning National Trust properties. Fans of the Poldark and Sanditon series, as well as the 1993 film Remains of the Day, might recognise this fabulous late seventeenth-century mansion and manicured gardens. Elsewhere, you're a little under ten miles from Bath, where you can take in the heritage atmosphere and grand Georgian architecture of one of the UK's most picturesque cities.

Just bear in mind, at certain times of the year, the farm can be busy. When you feel like exploring a little further afield, you can visit Chepstow Castle or Lydney in the Forest of Dean.

The owners live just down the hill, but you’ll have your own private garden where you can relax in the wood-fired hot tub (available for an extra fee) or if you prefer staying indoors, there's a roll-top bath. Dressing gowns are provided for extra comfort (just bring your own slippers), and the little kitchen has everything you could need for light bites and drinks.

Deep within the Somerset countryside — halfway between Bristol and Bath — lies this pair of converted barns that will provide the most bucolic of countryside getaways. The first has been redesigned to be the living quarters with a whitewashed interior, orbicular hanging lights and a huge collection of house plants — not to mention a wood-burning stove for chillier evenings. Walk out through the huge glass doors and you'll see the second barn, which holds the en-suite bedrooms. The space in between these two buildings has been lovingly tended to, too. Out here, you'll find a stone hot tub built into the lawn, as well as two separate seating areas surrounded by plant beds where you can relax amid dappled Somerset sunshine. On warm days, head out for a walk in the neighbouring valley, which has a private arboretum to visit. It takes just over an hour to reach the top of Kelston Round Hill, which offers sweeping views. Alternatively, you can drive to the centre of Bath in under half an hour.

Although this apartment is on the second floor of the barn, it truly feels like a charming country cottage, the type you might come across after hours exploring enchanted woods. That might be down to the oak beams in the ceiling, or the open-plan living area's wooden floors and simple necessities. We think it's a dream stay for young families in particular. The barn itself is surrounded by pigs, chicken, and other animals, with an Iron Age hillfort to explore on walks around the grounds. There's something mesmerising about getting up close with the animals – it's easy to spend hours out here, especially if you have little ones. You can fire up a barbecue, shared with the other homes on-site, for an alfresco feast. Or live like a local, and visit the pubs and restaurants of nearby Chipping Sodbury.

Planning a special event? The grade II-listed Regency building has no less than five indoor living spaces including a banquet-worthy dining room, which seats up to 20, a library packed with books, and sitting room with open fire and plenty of overstuffed chairs and sofas. The surroundings are impressive, part of the 28-acre Matara Estate, where rewilding projects and formal gardens have been in progress for the past 20 years. A private tour can be arranged – just ask the caretaker on your arrival. If you can manage your way out of all that (or even want to) you’ll find yourself in a charming part of the Cotswolds - with Stroud, Tetbury and Westonbirt’s National Arbotoreum nearby and Jane Austen’s beloved Bath just a 35-minute drive away.

As with breakfast and dinner, we recommend lunch al fresco under the vine-covered pergola before going back to sunbathing poolside. In the summer months, when a heat wave brings more potent temperatures your way, you might spend entire sun-drenched afternoons splashing in the crystal-clear waters of the private pool. 

With peace and tranquillity in spades, it’s unlikely that you’ll want to leave that behind, but the charming market town of Dursley is a must for a nice walk and a cup of coffee at the end of it. 

Golfers can escape to Stinchcombe Hill, whilst watersport lovers can visit the Cotswold Water Park to try their hand at white-water rafting. 

Return to play a few games of pool in the drawing room, sipping whiskey that you can later take outside for a peaceful drink at sunset.

It’s close enough to Bath, Chippenham, and Castle Combe for day trips – the National Trust’s Lacock is only a fifteen-minute drive away, too. This is a charming home perfect for a family, with a wood-burning stove in the snug/games room for cooler weather, and a pretty garden with a patio for spring and summer visits. Your four-legged friends can come along too – it's a proper home-from-home.

Inside, you’ll find plenty of original features giving this home a cosy feel. This place will suit a couple looking to be in the heart of a beautiful village surrounded by countryside views.

It’s worth noting that this home is on a working farm, so there might be some noise from time to time, but we think it’s a great option for a base near Bristol that’s away from the hustle and bustle.

There’s no need to rush at this rustic old barn in the Cotswolds countryside. As you cross through the secret garden and step inside, you’ll understand. The ancient oak beams speak of a time when this home was originally the annexe to the larger barn next door, and the vaulted ceiling adds space to this studio-sized apartment. The windows look onto the shared garden, where the outdoor bench quickly became our favourite spot for an afternoon cuppa. The petit kitchen has all the necessities for a quick meal, and we couldn’t wait to snuggle down in the huge soft bed after a busy day exploring. Speaking of exploring, you’re on a working farm here and your hosts are more than willing to show you around and a few country walks are on the cards with an Iron Age fort just next door. The cities of Bath and Bristol are only half an hour’s drive away, the perfect distance for a day trip.

This home embraces the Cotswold idyll with a spacious lawn perfect for relaxing and a secluded, covered hot tub for evening soaks. Inside, there are two living rooms so the group can spread out – both with a wood-burning stove for colder evenings – and there’s two dedicated games room outside with pool, table tennis and foosball tables. In the main drawing room there are boardgames and toys to keep the kids occupied. The farmhouse-style kitchen is a delight at breakfast time. In the village of North Nibley, there’s a small shop and the Black Horse pub within walking distance but you’ll want a car to explore the rest of the Cotswolds.

The owners live next door, but you'll have plenty of privacy. Location-wise, you'll find picturesque villages, scenic walks, and vibrant cities like Bath and Bristol within easy reach by car.

Between the stone walls, A-frame timber beams and double-height ceilings, it should come as no surprise that this rustic bolthole used to be a barn. It's actually situated on a working farm, where animals like chickens, donkeys, goats and the owner's dogs all roam, so if a rural retreat is what you're after, this will do nicely. The open-plan layout is roomy and bright, so you'll have more than enough room to spread out. On sunny days, open the bi-fold doors and enjoy the fresh country air as it wafts through the living area, or step out into the courtyard and for an alfresco afternoon tea. Underfloor heating will keep chilly toes at bay while you're rustling up dinner in the kitchen – a bonus for the winter months – while the wet-room style bathroom has a sleek rainfall shower. Make sure to pack comfortable shoes, as there are walking trails aplenty. You're more than welcome to collect fresh eggs for breakfast, swim in the freshwater pond or sign up for an on-site art class – or speak to the host about arranging special experiences, like private chefs and at-home massages. Dyrham Park is right down the street, there's a rumoured Saxon king's burial site behind the farm and both a cafe and pub are within walking distance. It's an excellent spot for a countryside getaway, but if you crave a bit more pace, Bath is only a thirty-minute drive away.

We're completely hung up on this home in the Cotswolds, a dreamy apartment that's part of a stunning converted barn. Even arriving here has an ethereal charm, driving past miles of rolling green fields to a home that's a true countryside escape. Opening the front door, what first enamoured us were the high ceilings and French doors – the natural light of the farm outside hits every pocket of the living areas. But this home is more than just its light. It's a mix of rustic cottage and manor house in one, where grand stone fireplaces meet ridiculously comfy armchairs. Upstairs the bedroom is stunning and ornate, its large wooden bed living under vaulted ceilings and hugged by baby blue walls. Rather than a pull out bed, you'll be sleeping in a inviting king size, which does encroach on space but offers much more comfort. There's also a non-intrusive kitchen area that doesn't upset the open plan concept, a cosy sofa by the window, a small dining table, and an ensuite bathroom. While this home is very much limited to two guests maximum, you'll be walking distance from both work and culture, with the Clifton Suspension Bridge just twenty five minutes west and Bristol's business district only half an hour east.

It’s also close to the University of Bristol. The apartment itself is stylishly decorated and has a compact open-plan living area, perfect for a couple, solo traveller or business professional. And we love the leafy views over the neighbourhood. This home offers a comfortable and convenient base for exploring the vibrant city of Bristol.
