Beyond this home’s landscaped garden, it’s nothing but fields as far as the eye can see. You’re in a tiny West Yorkshire village, just a short hop in the car from the natural wonders of the Peak District. The exterior is honey-stone perfection with a plant-filled garden providing an al fresco spot for drinks and lounging in the sunshine. Glass doors fold back from the dining room for meals that feel as though they’re outside. A modern interior – black walls and leather sofas – is a far cry from the cottage exterior, but doesn’t take away from the comfort of this country bolthole.

Heart of The Hills

Walking into this beautiful cottage, you’d probably not be able to tell that it is over three-hundred-years old, or that it has a fair amount of experience as a coaching inn. Save for the exposed beams, brickwork, and basic structure, this home’s undergone a complete makeover that’s turned it into a very hospitable, little home. We, of course, love historic touches and found that the ones present here add a bucketload of charm to this home, and the choice of furnishings only further serves to make this space comfortable and inviting. Sink into the plush velvet sofa – by the way, we think the blue around the house brings a brilliant luxe contrast to the space – with the fire crackling at your feet as you catch up on your reading.

Reading that can also be done outside when the weather is just right. Head out with a cup of coffee and embrace the peace and quiet, enjoying the view of the cathedral when you’ve put your book down for a quick break.

Back inside, the kitchen – which features a beautiful aga cooker – connects to a dining room by the way of a conservatory, which makes even cooking a social affair as some guests can get breakfast ready whilst others bask in the light streaming in from up above.

As if this home could get much better, it’s also very close to the famous Peak District National Park and a day out there, admiring the lakes and moors as you hike the round hills, is an absolute must. When you return too tired to cook, head to the local pub or chip shop for a quintessentially British end to your day.

Tideswell Cottage

Tucked into the quiet village of Sheldon, this centuries-old stone cottage is a proper Peak District retreat. Inside, exposed beams and a wood-burning stove in the sitting room set the tone for evenings in – and after a day on the moors, a roll-top bathtub awaits. The Monsal Trail is nearby for walking and cycling, Chatsworth House is a ten-minute drive, and a traditional village pub is a short stroll away. Bakewell, with its markets and independent shops, is just 3 miles down the road – perfect for exploring.

Sheldon Sanctuary

This unique home was a bakery in the 1950s but it was converted by the host's parents, who both worked at the Lincoln School of Art. As well as being a day job, they also had a strong interest in artistic endeavours and they filled the interior with hand-crafted ceramics, fabrics and paintings. Today, much of their collection remains and it lends the feel of part-museum, part-period home — especially with the hardwood floors and wood-burning fireplace. The large garden is equally special too, with a pond full of frogs and plenty of lawn space on which to lie back with a book borrowed from the packed shelves in the dining room. When you fancy exploring your surroundings, the city of Lincoln is thirteen minutes away in the car, while the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in just over twenty. Closer to home, there's a pub two minutes' walk around the corner.

Where The Art Is

Take a break from the fuss and flutter of daily life and retreat to this traditional English cottage in the charming village of Tideswell. A former sweet shop, this boutique-style home combines original features with contemporary furnishings to create a modern yet warm and inviting space. Stepping inside, you'll find pearly white walls, ceilings and stone floors, while the log burner and wooden beams overhead keep things extra cosy. Explore the rolling green fields of the Peak District National Park right on your doorstep, or enjoy a morning walk through the village, passing cheery pubs, bistros, fish and chip shops and quaint little tea rooms. Stop off for a classic scone with jam and clotted cream or tuck into a full English breakfast close by or visit the award-winning restaurant 'The Merchant's Yard' for a special occasion. In warmer months, make the most of the sunny south-facing courtyard and relax with a bottle of something sparkling after a day spent roaming this beautifully unbridled landscape.

Toffee Treat

Village life is on your doorstep with a stay at this pet-friendly Yorkshire cottage. Nestled in postcard-pretty Tollerton, a cosy pub and award-winning village shop will come in nicely. Meanwhile, Easingwold, historic York, and the moorlands for bracing hikes are just a short drive away for day trips. Back home, while this cottage is a new build, it still brings plenty of charm. A great option for a small family stay, there’s an obligatory fire for cosy film nights. While in warmer months, the enclosed private garden for golden-hour drinks comes into its own.

Village Charmer

Fit for a romantic country break, this classic stone cottage sits in the rolling hills near Huddersfield. A ten-minute drive sees you in the confines of the Peak District – the UK’s oldest National Park – where walking trails weave across the landscape atop hills and past waterfalls. Ten minutes in the other direction, you’ll find the quaint town of Holmfirth to stock up on groceries and visit the local pubs and cafés. There’s a local pub and bakery a fifteen-minute stroll into the hamlet of Hepworth too.

After a day trekking in the Peaks, this is the perfect spot to put your feet up. Unlace your hiking boots and warm your toes by the wood-burning stove in the living room. ‘Cosy’ is the watchword here, with old wooden gables on display and thick stone walls keeping things warm once the stove gets going. There’s a little selection of holiday reads for evenings by the fire and a full kitchen for meals at home. In the sunny summer months, make use of the patio, furnished with a bistro table for two. From here, the only sound is the odd bleet from sheep in the field next door.

The Shepherdess

Found in the centre of town, a thirteen-minute walk from Lincoln's iconic Cathedral, this large family home has been restored with comfort and style in mind. Especially so, given the size of the two lounges. Add the dining area into the equation and the chef's kitchen (complete with four ovens), and you can see how there's plenty of room for everyone to carve out their own space. Two pull-out beds and two single sofa beds keep sleeping arrangements flexible, although these are best for children as they're on the smaller side.

Step out through the bi-fold doors onto a large patio area with garden furniture for seamless indoor and outdoor dining. Down from the patio is a large grass area and a hot tub suitable for seven people. This is the perfect garden for summer socials and barbecues.

Blue Velvet & Cedar

We're pretty sure that you won't find many cottages cuter than this. Built at the backend of the eighteenth century, this traditional weaver's house is Grade-II listed and you can see why. Inside, the wooden ceiling beams, exposed brickwork and stable door are full of rustic charm, while a log-burning fire and antique furnishings add an extra level of cosiness. To the side of the home, there's a patio area complete with alfresco seating where you can enjoy a coffee and the surrounding tranquillity of West Yorkshire. Fans of Last of the Summer Wine — one of the longest-running sitcoms in the world — will love walking around the local town of Holmfirth where it was filmed. The Peak District is only a ten-minute drive away too if you're in the mood for a long ramble.

Summer Wine

Dating back to medieval times, this stunning grade II listing country manor is perfect for long weekends, hen parties and intimate weddings. Having featured in the Doomsday Book, it was entirely restored by the Elwes family fifteen years ago and today presents an array of unique characteristics throughout. It is brimming with unique and characterful quirks – it features over nine different staircases, hundreds of antique pieces, and hand-painted floors.

The seven-bedroom suites are each presented with their own cheerful personality. Meanwhile, the luxurious bathrooms invite guests to sink into the copper bathtubs for blissful moments of relaxation in the countryside. And in case the seven bedrooms won't do, there are an additional three farm cottages that can be hired, accommodating up to forty guests.

Set a three-minute drive from a 400-acre nature reserve with wild Exmoor ponies roaming on it, there are also numerous on-site amenities for guests to enjoy beyond the manor's walls. Located just a twenty-second stroll away, in the walled garden overlooking a small lake full of wildlife, you'll find the on-site spa. Handcrafted in wood to be in keeping with the surrounding natural beauty, enjoy uninterrupted pampering with spa treatments, including massages and milk baths.

In addition to the spa, guests can also hire a 60 sq/m giant yurt situated in the manor's garden; it comes fully insulated and includes a cosy wood-burning stove, a kitchenette, and an essential domestic power supply. We particularly love the stylish designs of the yurt - it makes for a memorable once-in-a-life-time type experience and serves wonderfully for special events or parties. The hosts can also accommodate guests with catering services upon request – so why not book in for a delicious afternoon tea before treatment at the spa?

When you're all pampered out, other possible on-site activities include archery, axe throwing and yoga. The large walled garden provides a blissful setting for barbecues amidst the ancient fruit trees during the summer months. Let the fresh countryside breeze soothe your soul – life's daily stresses will be left well and truly behind you.

One Last Dance

Located on the southeastern edge of the gorgeous Peak District National Park, this stunning ten-bed Georgian mansion is secluded away within an acre of immaculately presented private gardens. With terraced lawns, cute courtyard spaces and a Big Green Egg barbecue, the ornate outdoor areas are perfectly set up for alfresco dining. In fact, the gardens are noteworthy enough to have had an entire episode of BBC's Gardener's World devoted to them.

The home packs in plenty of charm from the moment you enter its grand entrance hall, with eye-catching colourful tiles, an imposing fireplace and elegant antiques. It's a similar story throughout the rest of the ground floor, with the addition of wood panelling in the reading room, large bay windows overlooking the garden in the drawing room, and plenty of light and space beneath the beautiful vaulted ceiling in the kitchen. Here, a large pine table sits up to ten adults or fourteen with children – perfect for large gatherings of friends and family.

Upstairs houses the six bedrooms, each with its own unique atmosphere and no less lovely than the last. With a four-poster bed, freestanding tubs in the en-suites and double aspect windows overlooking the luscious gardens, the only dilemma will be which of the three en-suite double bedrooms or two twins to choose. Finally, there's a bunk room that can accommodate four children.

The ever-popular Peak District, England's oldest national park, is right on your doorstep. There are plenty of picturesque towns and villages to visit, plus rugged, windswept scenery to hike through or simply admire from a fireside armchair in one of its charming pubs. Those with a head for heights might like to try their hand at rock climbing or hot air ballooning, while cycling and hiking are on offer for those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground. If you'd like to nurture your creative side, speak to your hosts about photography courses and art classes.

The Crystal Palace

A classic Yorkshire stone cottage sitting in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this is the kind of place that earns its keep on a grey afternoon as much as a sunny one. The living space centres on a wood burner and a generous corner sofa – ideal after a long walk – while the bedroom balcony opens onto open countryside views worth lingering over. A stone terrace beside an old wall is the spot for morning coffee when the weather plays along. Fountains Abbey is roughly a sixteen-minute drive, and the Grantley Arms is within walking distance for real ales when you'd rather not go far.
