Dating back to the 19th century, this barn in the White Peak area of the Peak District has ben given a new lease of life in recent years. No longer used for farmyard storage, it's now a country getaway full of luxurious touches.

Save for the sections of exposed stonework, you wouldn't be able to guess this home's true age. The design is contemporary but definitely rustic in flavour, with bare floorboards, artfully weathered wooden furnishings and a Scandinavian-style wood-burning stove that's the ideal companion to return to after a long bout in the great outdoors. The svelte rolltop bathtub upstairs is another way to get toasty and warm, too.

The award-winning Callow Hall is five minutes away, and Thor’s Cave – one of the beautiful hiking trails of the area – can be found at the other end of a twenty-minute drive. 

But we bet we had you at rural peace, didn’t we? You’d be right to embrace it and there’s no better way than soaking up all that quiet from your position on the sunlounger. In the summer months, you can ward off the heat by slipping into the beautifully clear, private pool. Autumn and spring would best be spent strolling the large garden – you might even pack a basket and thermos for an impromptu picnic when you find a spot that you’re particularly drawn to.

Recently restored, you can tell how much love and care has been put into this stunning space that blends beautiful modern comforts with characterful original details to create an unforgettable home. From the underfloor heating to the wood-burning stove, romantic roll-top tub and sweeping views of the Peak District fields and valleys, there’s a storybook warmth and cosiness here that instantly makes you feel welcome. With two outdoor terraces, you can enjoy your breakfast alfresco while the horses roam around you, or fire up the barbecue for a dinner under the stars. After looking around this home, you probably wouldn't guess that the property has been standing for more than a quarter of a millennium, but that's a testament to the care and attention that has gone into the renovation.

Aside from the odd exposed stone wall and the original fireplace, the interior is as contemporary as they come, but great importance is placed on cosiness, too. Underfloor heating and a wood-burner will get you warmed up once again after bracing country walks, while the huge kitchen has plenty of space for whipping up hearty feasts. If the weather's playing ball, you can even eat outside, which will give you an opportunity to admire the bucolic scenery.

As well as this private patio and barbecue, there's a shared fire pit on the grounds around which to gather once darkness falls. Guests also get access to a shared games room, which has tables for ping-pong and pool, board games and toys, as well as a small shop selling meat from the surrounding farm and locally produced artisanal products.

Sitting deep within the Peak District, you're certainly not short of walking routes in the local area, plus a couple of historic attractions — Magpie Mine is only a ten-minute walk, for instance. Nestled on the outskirts of the Peak District, this holiday cottage is great for nature lovers and families. Your host can provide equipment for little ones and well-behaved pets are welcome, and there is space for alfresco dining on the large patio. Our favourite spot to unwind is the private hot tub, especially with those countryside views. Indoors, the main staircase has some gaps, so younger children will need supervision. You won't find a washing machine here, but for shorter trips, we think it's a great choice. You'll want a car here – the Peak District National Park is easily reachable, while thrill-seekers will find Alton Towers just a fifteen-minute drive away.
