This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa. Toast up those toes in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand – you'll feel all warm and homely in no time at all. Step outside of this 17th-century building and explore one of the loveliest market towns in England that's positively brimming with listed buildings, medieval castles and striking churches. Take a short twelve-minute walk up Corve Street to the town centre and explore this historic place for yourself.

The ample hilly walking routes and quaint villages are reason enough to pay a visit to the Shropshire countryside, but just in case you need another incentive, this lodge has the perfect perk in the shape of a hot tub on the terrace. We're happy to say that the home's living quarters are just as romantic, with wooden walls, floors and ceilings lending the feel of an Alpine ski chalet, and the fireplace only adding to this sense of cosiness. The French doors bring in plentiful amounts of natural light and also have the added benefit of looking out to the private garden, which even features a waterfall.

When the weather permits, it's easy to pass hours out in the open air thanks to the seating on the covered terrace and the barbecue ready and waiting for summer feasts. You're also spoilt for choice when it comes to nearby locations for bracing rambles, as the home sits on the edge of the Shropshire Hills AONB. Stokesay Castle is five minutes' drive down the road, while the charming country town of Church Stretton is ten minutes in the other direction.

The striking Georgian cottage features beamed ceilings, traditional shutters, sash windows, wood-burning stoves and an impressive garden, all while providing guests with twenty-first-century comforts and design. Prepare wonderful meals in the fully equipped kitchen, then enjoy your creations al fresco or in the modern dining room. From here, it's easy to visit all corners of the famous Peak District.

King Of The Vale

Dating back to the 19th century, this barn in the White Peak area of the Peak District has ben given a new lease of life in recent years. No longer used for farmyard storage, it's now a country getaway full of luxurious touches.

Save for the sections of exposed stonework, you wouldn't be able to guess this home's true age. The design is contemporary but definitely rustic in flavour, with bare floorboards, artfully weathered wooden furnishings and a Scandinavian-style wood-burning stove that's the ideal companion to return to after a long bout in the great outdoors. The svelte rolltop bathtub upstairs is another way to get toasty and warm, too.

As you can probably guess from looking out through the glass doors to bucolic views of rolling countryside, you're not short of walking routes and picturesque scenic points in the immediate locale. After looking around this home, you probably wouldn't guess that the property has been standing for more than a quarter of a millennium, but that's a testament to the care and attention that has gone into the renovation.

Aside from the odd exposed stone wall and the original fireplace, the interior is as contemporary as they come, but great importance is placed on cosiness, too. Underfloor heating and a wood-burner will get you warmed up once again after bracing country walks, while the huge kitchen has plenty of space for whipping up hearty feasts. If the weather's playing ball, you can even eat outside, which will give you an opportunity to admire the bucolic scenery.

This barn conversion in deepest Herefordshire is bursting with rural authenticity. Not only is the property located close to a peaceful nature reserve complete with lakes, but it's also been Grade-II listed to protect its historical importance. However, despite this impressive pedigree, the home's interior is pretty contemporary, with a sleek kitchen, four-poster bedrooms and tiled bathrooms sitting quite comfortably underneath the original wooden ceiling beams. This medieval house is one of the oldest in Stratford-upon-Avon, but the way the host has decorated it marries the new interiors perfectly with the original structure. The slanted walls, wooden panels, and beautiful tiles wouldn’t seem out of place in a Lewis Carroll novel, which for a house with as much history as this, feels pretty apt. It doesn't surprise us that the unique home was chosen as a filming spot for the BBC One show Shakespeare & Hathaway.

We can't decide on a favourite feature – torn between the beam-ceilinged bedrooms, the boutique-style bathrooms, the wall painting from the 1600s, and the location in the very middle of this historic town. The high street, with its Shakespeare museums and old-timely pubs, is just a five-minute walk away. There’s still plenty else for you to discover yourself, as in a house like this there's no shortage of nooks and crannies.

On the border between England and Wales, this little eco hut sits in the splendidly named hamlet of Burlingjobb. There’s nothing but the cheep and pip of birdsong and the occasional bleat of a lamb here. The curve of the cabin’s roof reflects Hanter Hill opposite, and each cabinet and window frame has been crafted from local cedar and douglas fir. The living room and kitchen has everything you need to unwind in an evening, including a hand-made kitchen and sofa tucked under the gorgeous floating staircase. Heating comes courtesy of infra-red panels, a nod to the environment and, as the cabin is kept cosy, you can select a book from the little library and take things back to analogue. Glass doors lead out to a deck with a fire pit and barbecue. The real highlight is the master bedroom, dappled with botanica and with a picture-frame window looking out over the garden. It’s here you’ll find the longest claw-footed tub we think we’ve ever seen – perfect for a soak after a day hiking up to Hanter Hill or the tumbling cascade of Water Break-Its-Neck waterfall.
