Dating back to the 19th century, this barn in the White Peak area of the Peak District has ben given a new lease of life in recent years. No longer used for farmyard storage, it's now a country getaway full of luxurious touches.

Save for the sections of exposed stonework, you wouldn't be able to guess this home's true age. The design is contemporary but definitely rustic in flavour, with bare floorboards, artfully weathered wooden furnishings and a Scandinavian-style wood-burning stove that's the ideal companion to return to after a long bout in the great outdoors. The svelte rolltop bathtub upstairs is another way to get toasty and warm, too.

As you can probably guess from looking out through the glass doors to bucolic views of rolling countryside, you're not short of walking routes and picturesque scenic points in the immediate locale. The historic market town of Longnor only takes five minutes to reach in the car as well and offers a one pub, coffee shop & village shop.

This Grade-II listed Georgian townhouse in the historic Cheshire town of Congleton doesn't shortchange guests when it comes to rooms. As well as the generously sized bedrooms, there are also three separate living rooms and kitchens, many with log-burning fireplaces or — in the case of one — an Aga stove to keep your toes warm. As well as there being no shortage of space to socialise in the traditionally appointed interior, the home also benefits from two garden spaces, one with a hot tub large enough to accommodate eight guests on a warm summer's evening. If it's too cold to be frolicking about outside, there are plenty of chic bars and restaurants in the locale, some even on the street on which the house sits. However, rural outings are just as easy, too — the outer boundary of the Peak District can be reached in twelve minutes in the car, while Biddulph Grange Garden only takes eight.

Nestled on the outskirts of the Peak District, this holiday cottage is great for nature lovers and families. Your host can provide equipment for little ones and well-behaved pets are welcome, and there is space for alfresco dining on the large patio. Our favourite spot to unwind is the private hot tub, especially with those countryside views. Indoors, the main staircase has some gaps, so younger children will need supervision. You won't find a washing machine here, but for shorter trips, we think it's a great choice. You'll want a car here – the Peak District National Park is easily reachable, while thrill-seekers will find Alton Towers just a fifteen-minute drive away.

Bookended by rolling green fields, valleys and walking trails, this cosy cottage is the perfect retreat for those exploring the Peak District. Further afield, the charming villages of Ashbourne and Dovedale are just fifteen minutes' drive away. Or, if you'd prefer to expend a little more energy, it's only twenty minutes in the car from Alton Towers.

While its bones date back to the 16th century, this cosy stone barn couldn’t be more up-to-the-minute. Contemporary-comfort is the watchword here – expect eco-friendly heating, snuggly faux fur throws and Egyptian cotton sheets. Spend cooler mornings curled up on the sofa with a hot mug of tea, toasting your toes by the fire. When it warms up outside, potter around the sleek kitchenette, putting together a light lunch to be enjoyed in the sunshine. 

Take your plates over to the picnic bench and soak up the sights and sounds of the countryside. Once you’re ready to explore, tie your laces tight and set out on a stroll through the Manifold Valley to Thor’s Cave – it’ll take you around fifty minutes at a leisurely pace. With 5 acres at your disposal, this rustic cottage in the Peak District is the ideal escape for anyone looking to indulge in a slice of rural peace. Not so rural, however, that you can’t easily nip into the Georgian gem that is Ashbourne. Explore the local coffee shops and markets whilst you’re there by strolling the cobbled streets and admiring the architecture. The award-winning Callow Hall is five minutes away, and Thor’s Cave – one of the beautiful hiking trails of the area – can be found at the other end of a twenty-minute drive. 

But we bet we had you at rural peace, didn’t we? You’d be right to embrace it and there’s no better way than soaking up all that quiet from your position on the sunlounger. In the summer months, you can ward off the heat by slipping into the beautifully clear, private pool. Autumn and spring would best be spent strolling the large garden – you might even pack a basket and thermos for an impromptu picnic when you find a spot that you’re particularly drawn to. 

Select one of the books in the library and curl up with it on the leather sofa, only getting up to top off your coffee. Evenings can be spent watching a movie in front of the crackling fire or by playing board games – just as long as you don’t forget the cocoa. After looking around this home, you probably wouldn't guess that the property has been standing for more than a quarter of a millennium, but that's a testament to the care and attention that has gone into the renovation.

Aside from the odd exposed stone wall and the original fireplace, the interior is as contemporary as they come, but great importance is placed on cosiness, too. Underfloor heating and a wood-burner will get you warmed up once again after bracing country walks, while the huge kitchen has plenty of space for whipping up hearty feasts. If the weather's playing ball, you can even eat outside, which will give you an opportunity to admire the bucolic scenery.

As well as this private patio and barbecue, there's a shared fire pit on the grounds around which to gather once darkness falls. Guests also get access to a shared games room, which has tables for ping-pong and pool, board games and toys, as well as a small shop selling meat from the surrounding farm and locally produced artisanal products.

Sitting deep within the Peak District, you're certainly not short of walking routes in the local area, plus a couple of historic attractions — Magpie Mine is only a ten-minute walk, for instance. And what would a rural getaway be without a charming pub? You'll probably be happy to hear that the closest one is only eight minutes away on foot.

We're pretty sure that you won't find many cottages cuter than this. Built at the backend of the eighteenth century, this traditional weaver's house is Grade-II listed and you can see why. Inside, the wooden ceiling beams, exposed brickwork and stable door are full of rustic charm, while a log-burning fire and antique furnishings add an extra level of cosiness. To the side of the home, there's a patio area complete with alfresco seating where you can enjoy a coffee and the surrounding tranquillity of West Yorkshire. Fans of Last of the Summer Wine — one of the longest-running sitcoms in the world — will love walking around the local town of Holmfirth where it was filmed. Despite this functional heritage, you can safely banish any thoughts of cramped living quarters. Illuminated by a series of skylights, guests get access to a recently refitted kitchen that is plenty big enough for cooking up hearty dinners, as well as a lounge with comfy furnishings for sprawling out upon after long country walks. There is no shortage of outdoor pursuits to undertake in North Shropshire and just across the Welsh border, including wandering along the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, only twenty-four minutes away in the car. The Boat House gastropub on the outskirts of Ellesmere is only six minutes' walk away, too.

The ample hilly walking routes and quaint villages are reason enough to pay a visit to the Shropshire countryside, but just in case you need another incentive, this lodge has the perfect perk in the shape of a hot tub on the terrace. What better way to toast a productive day than by clinking glasses in bubbling water?

We're happy to say that the home's living quarters are just as romantic, with wooden walls, floors and ceilings lending the feel of an Alpine ski chalet, and the fireplace only adding to this sense of cosiness. The French doors bring in plentiful amounts of natural light and also have the added benefit of looking out to the private garden, which even features a waterfall.

When the weather permits, it's easy to pass hours out in the open air thanks to the seating on the covered terrace and the barbecue ready and waiting for summer feasts. You're also spoilt for choice when it comes to nearby locations for bracing rambles, as the home sits on the edge of the Shropshire Hills AONB. Stokesay Castle is five minutes' drive down the road, while the charming country town of Church Stretton is ten minutes in the other direction.

There’s a local pub and bakery a fifteen-minute stroll into the hamlet of Hepworth too.

After a day trekking in the Peaks, this is the perfect spot to put your feet up. Unlace your hiking boots and warm your toes by the wood-burning stove in the living room. ‘Cosy’ is the watchword here, with old wooden gables on display and thick stone walls keeping things warm once the stove gets going. There’s a little selection of holiday reads for evenings by the fire and a full kitchen for meals at home. In the sunny summer months, make use of the patio, furnished with a bistro table for two. From here, the only sound is the odd bleet from sheep in the field next door.

This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa. Toast up those toes in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand – you'll feel all warm and homely in no time at all. Step outside of this 17th-century building and explore one of the loveliest market towns in England that's positively brimming with listed buildings, medieval castles and striking churches. Take a short twelve-minute walk up Corve Street to the town centre and explore this historic place for yourself.
