This Grade-II listed Georgian townhouse in the historic Cheshire town of Congleton doesn't shortchange guests when it comes to rooms. As well as the generously sized bedrooms, there are also three separate living rooms and kitchens, many with log-burning fireplaces or — in the case of one — an Aga stove to keep your toes warm. As well as there being no shortage of space to socialise in the traditionally appointed interior, the home also benefits from two garden spaces, one with a hot tub large enough to accommodate eight guests on a warm summer's evening. If it's too cold to be frolicking about outside, there are plenty of chic bars and restaurants in the locale, some even on the street on which the house sits. However, rural outings are just as easy, too — the outer boundary of the Peak District can be reached in twelve minutes in the car, while Biddulph Grange Garden only takes eight.

Say it With Flowers

Surrounded by the wild natural beauty of the Peak District National Park, this idyllic cottage is the perfect getaway to relax and explore this majestic part of the English countryside. Located just outside the village of Birchover (a twenty-minute drive from Matlock), you’ll have all the peace and quiet you need to truly rest and unwind. Dating back to the 1700s, the cottage was originally built as a two-storey barn for the main house which your host Rachael’s parents bought as a ruin in the 1960s. Recently restored, you can tell how much love and care has been put into this stunning space that blends beautiful modern comforts with characterful original details to create an unforgettable home. From the underfloor heating to the wood-burning stove, romantic roll-top tub and sweeping views of the Peak District fields and valleys, there’s a storybook warmth and cosiness here that instantly makes you feel welcome. With two outdoor terraces, you can enjoy your breakfast alfresco while the horses roam around you, or fire up the barbecue for a dinner under the stars. Factor in the DVDs, books and board games on hand and there’s plenty to keep you entertained on rainy days – but with so much nature to explore, we recommend grabbing your wellies and venturing out into the great outdoors. Walk around your home to discover the secret walking trails through the woods and ask your host to show you the megalithic Rocking Stone nearby. Visit Robin Hood’s Stride (eleven minutes by car or an hour’s walk), take a dip in the swimming hole at Youlgreave (an eight-minute drive) and spend an afternoon at stately Chatsworth House, fifteen minutes away by car. 


The Rocking Stone

This home in the heart of Chester is full of thoughtful touches like fresh flowers, a breakfast hamper, books and board games for the children, and even yoga mats and blocks should you feel the urge to ‘om’ while staying here. From the peace and quiet of the street, you’d never guess you were just a two-minute walk from Chester’s historic centre. Almost all the town's biggest sights are within walking distance in fact – you’re minutes from Grosvenor Park, the River Dee, Chester Racecourse, and the Roman Amphitheatre. This historic home in the heart of the Derbyshire spa town of Buxton is perfect for a couple of couples seeking to explore the Peak District. Recently renovated, this grade II listed Victorian property was built as apartments in the mid-1800s before becoming the local Post Office – signed, sealed, delivered, right? 

This fabulous first-floor home for four boasts a cosy all-purpose kitchen cum dining and living room as well as two en-suite bedrooms. You’ll love taking your morning coffee at the breakfast bar, whipping up your all time favourites in the contemporary kitchen – think mint green walls, wooden floors, matching cabinetry and low hanging lights – before dining together at the wooden table. Indulge in a long, hot soak in the tub before cosying up on the sofas and settling in for movie night. Alternatively, on sunny days head out to the beautifully curated shared terrace where you’ll be able to barbecue to heart’s content or simply sit and chat surrounded by trees, flowers and shrubs. 

If you fancy getting out and about and exploring the home of Buxton water, you won’t be disappointed to discover a variety of independent shops, café, restaurants and bars as well as natural wonders such as Poole’s Cavern on your doorstep. Treat yourself to a spa day or if you fancy a little more activity, Buxton is a great base from which to explore the UK’s oldest National Park, the Derbyshire Dales and the magnificent Chatsworth Estate.


Peaks & Dales

Staying at Bakewell Pudding is as much about experiencing your hosts' attentive service as it is about staying in a quaint cottage in a great location. A handy parking permit will be waiting for you on arrival, and while the space is a few minutes' walk to the front door, you'll get to start exploring the lovely village of Bakewell. You'll find independent coffeeshops and restaurants two minutes away, and your hosts will let you know their favourite ones too. The cottage is such a cosy space to return to and offers opportunities for unwinding both indoors and outdoors. Make use of the immaculate patio when the sun is shining, or retire inside for a relaxing evening by the the cracking fire. With the Peak District on your doorstep, you won't run out of activities to fill up your day. Hike the Monsal trail or plan a visit to Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall – there's something for everyone.

Bakewell Pudding

After looking around this home, you probably wouldn't guess that the property has been standing for more than a quarter of a millennium, but that's a testament to the care and attention that has gone into the renovation.

Aside from the odd exposed stone wall and the original fireplace, the interior is as contemporary as they come, but great importance is placed on cosiness, too. Underfloor heating and a wood-burner will get you warmed up once again after bracing country walks, while the huge kitchen has plenty of space for whipping up hearty feasts. If the weather's playing ball, you can even eat outside, which will give you an opportunity to admire the bucolic scenery.

As well as this private patio and barbecue, there's a shared fire pit on the grounds around which to gather once darkness falls. Guests also get access to a shared games room, which has tables for ping-pong and pool, board games and toys, as well as a small shop selling meat from the surrounding farm and locally produced artisanal products.

Sitting deep within the Peak District, you're certainly not short of walking routes in the local area, plus a couple of historic attractions — Magpie Mine is only a ten-minute walk, for instance. And what would a rural getaway be without a charming pub? You'll probably be happy to hear that the closest one is only eight minutes away on foot.


Gazing & Grazing

Tucked away in the South West Peak District, this cosy homestead is a rambler's dream. It's set on a working sheep farm in the quiet village of Wincle, and guests are free to roam the whopping thirty-eight acres of fields and woodlands, which stretch to the banks of the River Dane. Make sure to bring a pair of wellies and some proper walking boots – picturesque footpaths cut across the farmland, so you'll want to get out and explore. After an amble through the countryside, reward yourself with a pint and some delicious food at the local pub – it's a five-minute stroll away and has plenty of charm. When you're in the mood for a home-cooked feast, put on your favourite radio station and cook up a storm in the modern kitchen – it has everything you'll need and then some. With great views towards Hanging Stone and modern upgrades like sleek rain showers and underfloor heating, this home effortlessly combines country living with contemporary conveniences – it's the perfect place to get away from it all.

Otterly Cosy

Being situated in the Peak District, this cottage is in an ideal location to make the most of one of the UK's most beautiful regions. Get the boots on and hike one of the many trails here, or jump on two wheels and cycle to a nearby destination. We recommend the seventy-minute cycle to Buxton – a lovely town dating back to the Roman times that's known for its natural thermal springs. Soak your tired muscles before heading back to the cottage for the evening.

Green Fields

This fantastic dovecot conversion pairs thoughtful, rustic decor with high tech amenities including air conditioning, Netflix, Xbox, Amazon Echo and ultra-fast internet. If you would rather unplug, the free-standing rolltop bathtub is a particular highlight, accompanied by a selection of luxury toiletries for your pleasure. Use it all guilt-free – solar power, air source heating and filtered well water make this an environmentally friendly retreat. 

Though set in a private fourteen-acre estate, this country cottage is within easy distance of local amenities. The historic hamlet of Market Harborough is just a ten-minute drive away, where you'll find a host of independent shops and traditional British eateries. Stop off at the Haddon Fields on your way back and enjoy a gentle stroll through the woodland. Once you've worked up an appetite, return to your dovecot digs in time to soak up the last of the day's light with an al fresco meal on the terrace.

Rectory Cottage

Tucked away in the countryside surrounding Shrewsbury, this lovely cabin makes for an idyllic getaway for two. It can be found on the banks of River Perry, on the border between Wales and England. It’s set in grounds that also boast woodlands and access to the river, in a gloriously quiet spot amid beautiful countryside. 

There are excellent hikes to be enjoyed right from your doorstep, and it only takes forty-eight minutes to drive to the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where you can get up close to some pretty spectacular scenery. History buffs might want to visit Shrewsbury Castle, which is twenty-seven minutes away by car. There are pubs within a five-minute drive of the cabin, so after a day of the Great Outdoors you can sink back into a comfy chair by a roaring fire and enjoy a local pint. 

Of course, you might want to set up camp here in the cabin and not leave the grounds – it would be perfectly understandable. The tranquil private woodland creates a soothing backdrop for doing absolutely nothing. You might sit on the balcony and get stuck into a good book, or stroll along the river looking for ducks to feed. Perhaps you’ll fire up the barbecue in the late afternoon, ready for a relaxing evening in the cabin. When the sun starts to set, you’ll want to slip into the hot tub. Sip glasses of bubbly while soaking away your troubles, and look forward to being woken up by birdsong in the morning. 


Babar Down by the River

Originally an 18th-century multi-purpose garden building, this lovely getaway is located within a 1000-acre estate on the border of Shropshire and Staffordshire. It boasts some great features, such as an orangery, ideal for enjoying your morning cups of tea, as well as an open fireplace for those colder evenings. Being on an estate with regular events throughout the year may mean you're lacking a bit of privacy, but on the flip side, you get to enjoy the beautiful parkland, on-site brasserie, children's adventure playground, and miniature railway.
