Despite its small size, this charming Georgian cottage is packed with character – think exposed brick, original wooden flooring and traditional braced and ledged doors. We think it's the epitome of cosy – just curl up next to the wood-burning stove with a glass of wine and you'll understand what we mean. And although it's snug, it has everything you'll need. Out back, you'll find a small patio, and upstairs, a sumptuous bed beckons after a long day on your feet. The bathroom boasts a lavish rainfall shower, the kitchen comes well-stocked with culinary gear and crockery, and there's even a desk if you need to work from home. 

And the location is excellent, too. Nestled just a few minutes from the historic heart of Bury St Edmunds, five minutes on foot is the Abbey Gardens, while scrumptious restaurants, lovely cafes and old-school pubs aplenty are practically on your doorstep. The surrounding countryside is perfect for walking or cycling or, if you prefer ales to ambles, the Greene King Brewery in town is ideal for beer enthusiasts.

Brick & Barley

Life is but a dream at this lovely cottage set on the sprawling estate of Worlingham Hall. Completely secluded from the Grade I-listed Georgian manor at the heart of the grounds, this home is a unique blend of country charm and plush extravagance. From the snug study – complete with a leather-topped desk and high-backed office chair – every room here feels warm, cosy and just a little bit decadent. Host Tommaso has a passion for antiques – mainly British, Chinese and Tibetan furniture – which only adds to the stately atmosphere. After a day spent wandering the 448 acres of private woodland in your backyard, pop a bottle of bubbly and idle away lazy summer evenings in the lush private garden. In winter, snuggle up on the sumptuous leather sofas with an engrossing book and a fire roaring in the brick hearth. Worlingham lies between Norfolk and Suffolk – an ideal spot for exploring both the idyllic countryside and stunning coastline – while Beccles, a pretty market town boasting an array of quaint tea rooms, charming pubs and independent shops, is just a short thirteen-minute drive away.

Worlingham Cottage

Surrounded by over 500 acres of woodland, lakes and ponds, this Grade II-listed farmhouse makes a big impression. Rooms are spacious and comfortably modern, though taller guests might want to watch their heads on some of the sloping ceilings. The manicured garden stretches around the outdoor seating, making it easy for parents to supervise kids playing on the lawn whilst they enjoy a sunset drink. There's also a tennis court, gym, squash court, play set, and table tennis to keep everyone busy, but the lake is our favourite. With a jetty and small rowing boat, you can get out on the water whenever you need a peaceful moment. 

Suffolk's Delight

Step back in time at this meticulously restored Regency cottage. Your hosts have poured their time and energy into sourcing period-specific reclaimed materials and equipping the home with antique furnishings to create a cosy and charming English escape that offers the very best of coast and country.

All that effort has clearly paid off, as evidenced by the beautiful interior. From the Victorian roll-top bath to the eighteenth-century range and the wainscotting on the walls – every effort has been made to make it feel as authentic as possible. Even the mod cons, such as the TV, are hidden away inside bread ovens that are built into the chimney so as not to shatter the illusion.

At the top of the narrow staircase is the twin bedroom, through which you enter the main bedroom – a pretty common arrangement for houses of this period.

Step outside, and you'll find a beautifully maintained nature reserve right on your doorstep. Your hosts bought it in 2015 and have spent the intervening years slowly restoring and exposing its beauty, with winding footpaths leading to conveniently placed benches, soaring Scots pine trees and ancient oaks – perfect for a reflective moment in nature or a ride on the supplied bikes.

For adventures further afield, you'll find maps detailing footpaths that run to the world-class concert hall at Snape Maltings, two-and-a-half miles away, and continue through forests and past lakes, leading all the way to the sea at Aldeburgh. 

The Miller's Cottage

Originally built in the 1700s as a winnowing barn, this cosy cottage conversion is part of the Old Grove Farm, and is one of six homes around a large central courtyard. Begin your morning here with a welcome basket breakfast, served at the Millstone breakfast bar. Then explore the acres of orchards and meadows, with your four-legged friend trotting by your side. For lunch, why not follow the footpaths through the open countryside to the dog-friendly pub, which is just a fifteen-minute walk away? 

In the late afternoon, we would love to curl up on the sofa with a good book in front of the roaring fire or lounge beneath the apple and pear trees in the beautiful orchard. 

From inside the house, handmade oak windows in the living room, cut through the floor to the bedroom above affording amazing views, while a handmade iron balcony is a great vantage point to watch the sunset from. 

In the summer months, the large open-sided ‘Cart Lodge’ has a barbecue which can be pulled out, or you could simply sit beneath the lodge’s fairy lights and gaze at the stars of the night-time sky. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the wildlife – bats, badgers, hares, rabbits, deer and birds ¬– that share this land. 

Despite its rural setting, this cottage is only a five to ten-minute drive from supermarkets, cafés, museums, and the river Stour. Kersey, widely regarded as Suffolk’s prettiest village, is only a ten-minute cycle ride from the home. Plus, Lavenham – England’s best-preserved Medieval Village – is just a fifteen-minute drive away, where you will also find great quality restaurants such as The Great House or The Swann. Meanwhile, a day out to the unspoilt Suffolk coast is roughly an hour’s drive away to reach places like Pin Mill, Nacton, Levington, Orford, Aldeburgh, Dunwich, Southwold, and Mersey Island. 

Orchard Farmhouse

Arrive at this palatial and stately home – a former Royal residence of Prince Victor Duleep Singh, the Godson to Queen Victoria – in the east of England’s lush Norfolk countryside and be transported to a bygone era of sophistication, refinement and absolute elegance. Perfect for a large family celebration or just an indulgent rural escape together, the sprawling grounds are glorious and the interiors are renovated with all the desired modern conveniences, without losing the home's rustic regality. Part the velvet drapes enclosing your four-poster bed and wake to views of magical forests. Enjoy breakfasts in the garden, afternoon tea around the light and airy dining area, and evening cocktails down in the cellar – we really loved the traditional pub-style entertainment area and bar here. Active types may opt for a clay pigeon shoot, a game of tennis or a jog around the grounds, following the private trails. While the others gather around the log-burning fire, curling up with a good book and even a sing-along around the grand piano – you'll notice the royal patterned wallpaper, large picture windows and ceiling mouldings. Whatever you choose to do here, ensure you round off a lovely day with a tipple in the private jacuzzi and alfresco dining on your delightful patio area. Grace personified. 

Hockwold Hall

Set on the Suffolk coast, just a stone's throw from the beach, you'll find this charming former fisherman's cottage. Your hosts have recently renovated this home from home with your needs in mind, yet they've retained plenty of its undeniable period charm in the process.

Inside, the living room is decorated in soothing green tones, with plenty of comfortable Chesterfield seating and a wood burner that makes for idyllic nights telling tall tales around the fire. Elsewhere, the dining room has seating for four and a convenient workspace for anyone who can't quite leave the office behind. Finally, there's a compact kitchen equipped with everything you might need to whip up family feasts, plus an inviting bathroom with a Victorian rolltop bath for some evening 'you' time.

Upstairs, you'll find the three bedrooms, including a lovely main room with plenty of clothes storage so you can unpack and settle in. The second bedroom features a stunning custom-built shelving unit that houses everything from books to houseplants, while the third bunk room is perfect for the kids.

The cottage is under a quarter of a mile from the beach and there's a highly rated fish and chip shop just a few doors down, so order yourself a catch of the day and eat in the dappled sunlight of the courtyard garden, or head down to the beach for an impromptu alfresco dinner overlooking the sea.

Blue Persuasion

Just ninety minutes outside of London, you will find this charming and character-filled home on a quiet lane in rural Suffolk. It’s over 500 years old, and still has many of the original fittings, from the inglenook fireplaces to the oak beams. Perfect for a family getaway from the city, there is plenty to do and see from the property by foot or bicycle, while lush gardens and cosy interiors are there to enjoy if you’d like to stay put. When it’s meal time, if you don’t fancy getting your hands dirty, there is an excellent local pub just down the road.

Raspberry Scone

Experience a rare treat – a stay at a truly grand stately home, nestled in the middle of a beautiful country estate, steeped in history and offering more than a taste of luxury. As you arrive you’ll be dazzled by the spectacular gardens, known as one of the finest in the country – guests will be able to spend hours wandering through the enchanted alleyways, exploring the maze and the parkland and cooling off in the wild freshwater pool.

You'll be able to sample those unforgettable menus, created by a team of chefs who use only the best local and sustainably sourced produce. Each of the twelve bedrooms retains the character of a Victorian mansion with a collection of antique furniture that’s seen many esteemed guests stay here over the home's long history. If only these walls could talk! 

Outside, this family-run estate offers everything from bike trails, horse stables and woodland walks, to cocktail classes, wine tastings and foraging. The grand rewilding project has seen 1,000 acres become home to an abundance of wildlife, making a stay here a unique experience for nature lovers too. 

Lords & Ladies

Standing on the grounds of a classic Victorian vicarage, this converted 19th-century coach house enjoys its own outside space and brightly-lit interiors. Effortlessly blending original and modern design, the rural retreat is ideal for a group of friends or family looking to get away from it all.

Recline on the colourful seating when you arrive in the living room and admire the rustic details – exposed brick and wooden beams feature alongside a contemporary colour palette and eye-catching wall art. If you're too energised to relax, challenge your fellow guests to a pool or foosball tournament in the games room. At the end of the day, come together for a nourishing meal cooked up in the grand country kitchen.

Keen to see the sea? The Suffolk coastline is just over half an hour away – spend an afternoon in Ipswich and visit the charming selection of shops and galleries, some of which are housed in beautiful Victorian buildings.

Country Coach House

This penthouse apartment just steps from the Ipswich Waterfront and Neptune Marina is the definition of living the high life.

Whether you’re starting mornings here with an alfresco breakfast or enjoying a glass of wine at sunset, you’ll never tire of taking in the beauty of the home’s living backdrop. 
Both bedrooms, too, offer stunning views over the city and its marina and beckon a peaceful night’s sleep under their luxurious Egyptian cotton sheets.

Outside of your home, you’ve got plenty of restaurants, bars and shops to explore along the waterfront (a one-minute walk away), while the Ipswich Museum is fifteen minutes away on foot. Alternatively, hop in your car for a day of sun and sand with Felixstowe Beach a twenty-minute drive away.
