We think the best way to discover this exceptionally beautiful landscape, is to stay in an exceptionally beautiful home. On a street of candy-colored cottages, an eight-minute walk from Southwold Pier, your home is painted in a dreamy pale blue, with terracotta roof tiles, and a cute white door beckoning you inside. Built in 1850, you’ll love the original features like exposed wooden beams, a winding staircase, and wood-burning fireplace in the lounge. We think this is the perfect spot to settle down on the sofa, crack open a bottle of fizz, and say cheers to the start of your holiday. Another option would be sipping champagne in the luxurious freestanding tub, or taking celebrations out to your private patio on a sunny afternoon. When you get peckish, take a wander to your nearest chippie, three minutes away. Protect your portion of fish and chips from the seagulls as you stroll one minute down to the promenade and take in the fresh air from the North Sea.

The house has an open-plan kitchen-living-dining area, so sociable evenings with friends or family are a guarantee – and the kitchen has everything you’ll need to cook for the group. Upstairs, the cosy bedrooms, two of which are king-sized, are perfect for crashing out after a day spent walking the nearby nature reserves. Southwold village is less than five minutes away on foot – here you can peer into independent boutiques, stock up at the deli or indulge your inner beer connoisseur at Adnams Brewery. On sunny days, nab a perch on Southwold beach and wander over to the iconic pier. The neighbouring villages and towns are also excellent day trips – Walberswick to the south is excellent for fish and chips while further down, Thorpeness has a Peter Pan-inspired boating lake.

If the lure of a swim is too hard to resist, it's a short three-minute walk to Walberswick beach, where sun, sea, and sand rule supreme. Interiors follow a beautifully incorporated monochrome colour scheme: a well-stocked kitchen is painted black, while upstairs bedrooms are flooded with light from the sliding doors and white walls. The large garden is great for letting your imagination run wild, where lawn games and picnics are perfect. We love noisy dinners in the separate dining room, but if the pub is on the cards, classic boozer Anchor is stumbling distance from the home.

Set in the heart of Southwold, this cute-as-a-button cottage was built by French Huguenots in the 17th century. And while some original features remain, namely the inglenook fireplace and shipyard reclaimed beams, the home has been lovingly renovated to bring it right up to the minute. Breakfast is to be taken in the vibrant courtyard, with produce from the nearby greengrocers and family-run butchers. Pack a picnic and slap on your sun cream – the sand and shingle of Denes Beach await. A ten-minute stroll places you right on the seafront, where bracing swims are optional but soft serve ice cream is compulsory. Return home with a steaming bag of fish and chips or nip to the pub, just two minutes from your doorstep, for some proper grub and a well-deserved gin and tonic.

The seaside town of Southwold takes less than a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, while RPSB Minsmere can be reached in just under twenty-five minutes.

On the other side, find a lush lawn, enclosed by leafy trees, which feels so secluded and private that you’ll forget that you’re in a village. To explore a busier side to the area, head fifteen minutes by car to Southwold for a walk along the pier and a portion of fish and chips.

You can take the small ferry boat to Southwold (summer season only) or there is the footbridge to take you across. This home's proximity to the sea makes it an excellent choice for a seaside getaway.

Bagging the master bedroom means sleeping like a fairytale hero in a four-poster bed with billowing curtains.

For the autumn and winter months there are three wood-burning stoves, while two separate reception rooms with sofas and TVs will ensure there’s no squabbling over what movie to watch. It’s a great spot for a family party or festive trip, especially for those who love to cook thanks to its Rangemaster with two ovens. So, why not cook up a feast with some local Suffolk produce for your loved ones.

Mine's A Triple Scoop

Wake up to the sound of seagulls and the sight of Southwold's famous white lighthouse. This seaside apartment is airy and bright, courtesy of the big bay window in the living room. Enjoy breakfast perched up at the modern kitchen island, before heading out to explore the town and beach. Both children and adults will enjoy the Victorian Pier, complete with a unique array of artist-made arcade games and simulator rides at the Under The Pier Show. Grab an ice cream and spend the day on the sand – we recommend walking to the southern end of the beach, where the quiet dunes provide wonderful picnicking spots. Or, head back home to your own picnicking spot in the shared garden where lavender blooms in wooden planters and a bistro set is ready for you in the sun.

North Sea Waves

If it's proximity to the beach you're after, you're not going to get much better than this apartment. It takes all of a minute to walk to reach the sands of Southwold Beach, famous for its pastel-coloured huts and pier. You can get a sense of this coastal location without even leaving the flat. Simply step out onto the balcony and gaze out over the rooftops to see the town's lighthouse standing proud. There's seating out here and as is often the case with the seaside, watching the sky change colour at the end of the day can be particularly dramatic. Back inside, the home benefits from high ceilings, a period fireplace and a big bay window in the master bedroom, but a recent renovation has modernised the space in unshowy fashion — we're fans of the soothing colour scheme, the smart tiling in the bathrooms and the pair of pared-back chandeliers in the main living area. Simple, but effective.

Sitting next to the pretty village green, this second-floor apartment in Southwold is an excellent choice for exploring the many delights this area has to offer. The home enjoys a unique view over red-brick rooftops towards the old lighthouse – this impressive structure landmarks the promenade, where you can stroll along the seafront and admire rows of colourful beach huts.
