Found among peaceful Suffolk woodland and surrounded by fragrant lavender plants, this traditional cottage recently underwent a complete renovation. Lots of original features were retained — such as the exposed brickwork and the inglenook fireplace in which a log burner sits for those chilly nights — but the rest was spruced up to the high standards demanded by twenty-first-century travellers. The palette of muted greys and recessed ceiling spotlights feels particularly en vogue, while the private garden with its neat plant beds and alfresco seating on the patio really makes the most of the space. You’ll find a farm shop a half-hour walk away in the nearby village of Wangford, but if you don’t fancy cooking, there’s also a gastropub ten minutes away on foot, too. In terms of days out, you really are spoilt for choice. The seaside town of Southwold takes less than a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, while RPSB Minsmere can be reached in just under twenty-five minutes.

The picturesque village of Southwold sits on The Suffolk Coast and Heaths, one of only forty-six regions in the country officially labelled an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. We think the best way to discover this exceptionally beautiful landscape, is to stay in an exceptionally beautiful home. On a street of candy-colored cottages, an eight-minute walk from Southwold Pier, your home is painted in a dreamy pale blue, with terracotta roof tiles, and a cute white door beckoning you inside. Built in 1850, you’ll love the original features like exposed wooden beams, a winding staircase, and wood-burning fireplace in the lounge. We think this is the perfect spot to settle down on the sofa, crack open a bottle of fizz, and say cheers to the start of your holiday. Another option would be sipping champagne in the luxurious freestanding tub, or taking celebrations out to your private patio on a sunny afternoon. When you get peckish, take a wander to your nearest chippie, three minutes away. Protect your portion of fish and chips from the seagulls as you stroll one minute down to the promenade and take in the fresh air from the North Sea.

This is a charming barn conversion that's been beautifully renovated with high spec fittings and furnishings. It has ample space, indoors and out, for large groups of loved ones or cherished friends (including the furry kind) to get together in the glorious Suffolk countryside. And it's just 15 minutes’ drive from the nearest beach. The garden is a palette of greens, featuring an idyllic pond-side patio with alfresco dining and your very own pétanque (boules) court. One thing that really stands out is the superbly sociable space offered by the open-plan kitchen, dining and lounge area: three distinct spaces stitched together so the whole group can feel connected whilst having the flexibility to do your own thing. The chefs among your party will certainly appreciate this architectural quirk. Another large living room, complete with a wood-burning stove and French windows, offers a change of tone, perfect for an after-dinner game of charades or a quiet nightcap before retiring to the comfort of your rooms.

Set in the heart of Southwold, this cute-as-a-button cottage was built by French Huguenots in the 17th century. And while some original features remain, namely the inglenook fireplace and shipyard reclaimed beams, the home has been lovingly renovated to bring it right up to the minute. Breakfast is to be taken in the vibrant courtyard, with produce from the nearby greengrocers and family-run butchers. Pack a picnic and slap on your sun cream – the sand and shingle of Denes Beach await. A ten-minute stroll places you right on the seafront, where bracing swims are optional but soft serve ice cream is compulsory. Return home with a steaming bag of fish and chips or nip to the pub, just two minutes from your doorstep, for some proper grub and a well-deserved gin and tonic.

As you enter through the red brick archway, stepping inside the home is like being transported to old England. You’ll immediately feel a warm welcome for the original wooden beams and fireplace in the lounge. With muted colours throughout, it’s a calming space for a country retreat. White walls bring a fresh and modern feel, with some quirky features like a funky chandelier in the master bedroom. Outside, we love the idea of sitting out in sun on the peaceful patio, with a cup of tea and a novel. And to pique the interest of literature fans, Southwold is a former stomping ground of George Orwell. A far cry from the urban dystopias of some novels, the fictional town from 'A Clergyman’s Daughter' is based on this very village. See if you can find the Orwell plaque in town (hint: follow the smell of fish and chips).

For the autumn and winter months there are three wood-burning stoves, while two separate reception rooms with sofas and TVs will ensure there’s no squabbling over what movie to watch. It’s a great spot for a family party or festive trip, especially for those who love to cook thanks to its Rangemaster with two ovens. The house has an open-plan kitchen-living-dining area, so sociable evenings with friends or family are a guarantee – and the kitchen has everything you’ll need to cook for the group. Upstairs, the cosy bedrooms, two of which are king-sized, are perfect for crashing out after a day spent walking the nearby nature reserves. Southwold village is less than five minutes away on foot – here you can peer into independent boutiques, stock up at the deli or indulge your inner beer connoisseur at Adnams Brewery. On sunny days, nab a perch on Southwold beach and wander over to the iconic pier. The neighbouring villages and towns are also excellent day trips – Walberswick to the south is excellent for fish and chips while further down, Thorpeness has a Peter Pan-inspired boating lake.

Seabirds and fish-themed object d’art in the dining room are a reminder of your seaside location, and the original fireplaces in here, the living room and bedrooms are a nod to the home’s Victorian roots. Plus, there’s an additional hang-out with bean bags of sofas separate from the main lounge – perfect for kids and teenagers. Bagging the master bedroom means sleeping like a fairytale hero in a four-poster bed with billowing curtains.

In the heart of Southwold, this family-friendly pad is all about rest, relaxation and proximity to the beach. We love how bright each room is, with skylights and patio doors letting in the rays all day. Feel like cooking? The mint green kitchen has everything you'll need to rustle up a meal, which you can tuck into around the eight-seater dining table with a bottle of bubbly at the ready. Even better is the patio, where blossoming flowers and blue skies beckon. Enjoy sun-kissed breakfasts and alfresco cocktail hours in the salt-tinged air, then head inside for a laid-back movie night in front of the fire.

What makes this home really shine is the fantastic location. You're just a ten-minute walk from Southwold's sprawling beach – if it were up to us, we'd spend every moment lounging on the sand and swimming in the ocean waves. Restaurants, pubs, cafes and shops are on your doorstep, with many other hotspots within easy reach – including Southwold's famous pier and lighthouse, as well as ferries to the picturesque village of Walberswick.

The shops and pubs in town are even closer, with a deli, wine shop and butchers all within a five-minute walk. Regardless of whether you prefer land or sea activities, you couldn’t be better placed. 

Married to Sea

Whisk the family away to this seafront abode, just a short walk from Southwold beach. The sea views are really the highlight here, whether that’s from the bedrooms or the sunny front terrace. There’s only a small courtyard at the rear of the house, so it might not be the best choice for groups that value a large garden for the kids to play in. However, the front garden’s views of Southwold Pier make up for it. The recently renovated home is sleek and luxurious, although we think it might be cramped for all fourteen guests. There are two living areas, though, and four of the six bedrooms are ensuite for comfort. The dining room fits all fourteen guests, too. Don’t fancy cooking? You can take the short 200-yard walk to the pub for dinner.

A Ship of Good Chance

Seaside life is on your doorstep at this historic cottage, sitting pretty in Southwold with views of the 19th century lighthouse and just moments from the seafront.

Once part of a working dairy, this Grade II-listed cottage is now the perfect jumping-off point for exploring Southwold and the Suffolk coast. Boasting original brick floors and 19th-century character, every inch of this home is as warm and cosy as you'd expect. Snuggle up for a film night in the living area, where squishy leather sofas and shelves brimming with well-thumbed books invite you to kick back and relax. The dining table, meanwhile, was made for big family dinners and the charming window seat is an excellent spot for afternoon tea. When the sun is shining, open the French doors and relax in the south-facing garden, which provides a grassy patch for lawn games, tables and chairs for alfresco dining and a barbecue for summer evenings. And, if you need to check in with the office, a separate snug is the ideal place to work from home.

Nestled in the Southwold South Green area, you're only a three-minute walk from the sprawling beach, where dips in the North Sea and sunbathing on the shore are a given. The ironic thing about trying to choose somewhere to stay in a location like Southwold is the strong likelihood that you'll be spending the bulk of your time outside exploring the natural riches of the Suffolk coastline. However, this marvellous address offers plenty of incentives to hunker down at home.

When the weather's on your side, you'll want to make full use of the charming outdoor space, which has its alfresco dining table and barbecue for outdoor banquets, as well as the summer house complete with a games room to keep youngsters – as well as not-so-youngsters – entertained.

There's plenty to like in the main house, too. The large glass doors and windows flood the interior with natural light and this dances pleasingly off the smart parquet flooring. We like that the design is pared-back but doesn't look neglected in any way – in fact, the white walls, sleek kitchen surfaces and equally glossy bathrooms all score high on the style stakes.

As mentioned at the start, there's a wealth of spots to explore in the local area. First and foremost is Southwold Beach and Pier, which both take under ten minutes to reach on foot. There are nature reserves and walking routes to discover in the surrounding Suffolk Coasts & Heath AONB, as well as the Southwold Maize Maze only five minutes' drive away.

Just two miles from pretty Covehithe Beach, this family-size home has period charm, a cosy feel and plenty of space – both indoors and out. Extended to the rear and into the attic, it comes with a big living room with a bay window to the front and an impressive open-plan kitchen, dining and family space on the ground floor. 

With a log burner for winter stays and a lovely patio for summer breaks, it's got everything you could need. The three bedrooms are split across the top two floors, along with a Victorian-inspired bathroom with a freestanding bathtub, and we just love the iron bed in the main bedroom.

But this home has a little surprise at the bottom of the lawned garden too – a 'disco shed' complete with a big TV, leather sofa and handmade bar. Settle down on one of the bar stools and sip a cocktail as you choose a film to screen.

Close to the coast, there's lots to see and do a short drive from your door, from exploring Benacre National Nature Reserve on foot to eating out at one of Southwold's many excellent eateries.

Suffolk Star

This pretty apartment is the perfect base for a seaside stay in Southwold. It’s a ground-floor home in a prime location – just a five-minute walk to the pier and beach, and ten minutes to the High Street. Soak up the atmosphere of this lovely seaside town by day, and relax in this cosy home from home in the evenings. 

The sun streams through the large bay windows, making the apartment bright and airy. There’s a soft colour palette of calming shades, with a nod to the seaside setting here and there. Before you head out for the day, make yourself a cappuccino – the fully kitted-out kitchen here even has a milk frother. 

Spend your day sunbathing on the beach, indulging in the nostalgia of Southwold’s iconic pier, and promenading past painted beach huts and colourful flowerbeds before strolling home for supper. Perhaps you’ll pick up fish and chips to tuck into once you’re home. 

There are handy grocers and independent food shops nearby to supplement the welcome pack provided by the host, which is filled with locally sourced snacks and Fairtrade goodies. When you’ve had your fill of the beach, pack up a picnic and set out to explore the marshes and the footpaths of the beautiful Suffolk countryside.

If you’re looking for a classic British seaside holiday experience, this pastel blue cottage in Southwold should do the trick. It’s right in the heart of the town, with the iconic lighthouse in view, but still retains a sense of calm. Maybe that’s down to the oceanic colour scheme inside, which reminds you that the shore is just a few minutes walk away. There’s a gas fireplace to keep the living room cosy-warm after a day catching the sea air, and a splendid selection of holiday reads on the bookshelves.

Take a wander down the pier, admire the brightly painted beach huts, or go for a swim if the water’s not too chilly (it is the North Sea after all) – this is all just a seven-minute stroll along the seafront away. For the more adventurous, the Suffolk Heaths beckon, with their woodlands, estuaries.

Twenty minutes on foot from the pristine sands of Walberswick Beach, this cottage-like home sits proudly at the end of a quaint row of village houses. Its standout exterior makes it unique on this street. The tasteful, pale-grey slatted wood is reminiscent of an exotic beachside retreat, but white detailing on the pointed roof and oriel windows give the home Nordic character.
