On a street of candy-colored cottages, an eight-minute walk from Southwold Pier, your home is painted in a dreamy pale blue, with terracotta roof tiles, and a cute white door beckoning you inside. Built in 1850, you’ll love the original features like exposed wooden beams, a winding staircase, and wood-burning fireplace in the lounge. We think this is the perfect spot to settle down on the sofa, crack open a bottle of fizz, and say cheers to the start of your holiday. Another option would be sipping champagne in the luxurious freestanding tub, or taking celebrations out to your private patio on a sunny afternoon. When you get peckish, take a wander to your nearest chippie, three minutes away. Protect your portion of fish and chips from the seagulls as you stroll one minute down to the promenade and take in the fresh air from the North Sea.

The coastal village of Southwold, like most English seaside towns, has a splendid mix of quaint shops, rustic pubs, and chippies. A twelve-minute walk from its traditional pier, and fourteen from the boating lake, this cottage is a perfect base for exploring the local delights. As you enter through the red brick archway, stepping inside the home is like being transported to old England. You’ll immediately feel a warm welcome for the original wooden beams and fireplace in the lounge. With muted colours throughout, it’s a calming space for a country retreat. White walls bring a fresh and modern feel, with some quirky features like a funky chandelier in the master bedroom. Outside, we love the idea of sitting out in sun on the peaceful patio, with a cup of tea and a novel. And to pique the interest of literature fans, Southwold is a former stomping ground of George Orwell. A far cry from the urban dystopias of some novels, the fictional town from 'A Clergyman’s Daughter' is based on this very village. See if you can find the Orwell plaque in town (hint: follow the smell of fish and chips).

And while some original features remain, namely the inglenook fireplace and shipyard reclaimed beams, the home has been lovingly renovated to bring it right up to the minute. Breakfast is to be taken in the vibrant courtyard, with produce from the nearby greengrocers and family-run butchers. Pack a picnic and slap on your sun cream – the sand and shingle of Denes Beach await. A ten-minute stroll places you right on the seafront, where bracing swims are optional but soft serve ice cream is compulsory. On the other side, find a lush lawn, enclosed by leafy trees, which feels so secluded and private that you’ll forget that you’re in a village. To explore a busier side to the area, head fifteen minutes by car to Southwold for a walk along the pier and a portion of fish and chips.

As for exploring, Southwold Pier is a twenty-minute walk away, while The Denes Beach is just four minutes from home. The town is somewhere in between the two, a fifteen-minute walk away, offering tea shops, pubs and delectable fish & chip shops that complete this authentic coastal retreat.

Take a five minute walk to the pier, shops and chippies of Southwold’s promenade or grab an ice cream from the fantastic shop across the road – if you don't have an ice cream in hand, you're not doing Southwold right. Or spend the day on Southwold Beach, also a five-minute stroll, while a nearby footpath takes you down to the harbour (around a twenty-minute walk), where you can get a foot ferry to Walberswick. Later, relax in the enclosed outdoor courtyard, back at this lovely home. We love the pretty shutters and the shelves full of books here. For the autumn and winter months there are three wood-burning stoves, while two separate reception rooms with sofas and TVs will ensure there’s no squabbling over what movie to watch. It’s a great spot for a family party or festive trip, especially for those who love to cook thanks to its Rangemaster with two ovens. So, why not cook up a feast with some local Suffolk produce for your loved ones.

Mine's A Triple Scoop

Wake up to the sound of seagulls and the sight of Southwold's famous white lighthouse. This seaside apartment is airy and bright, courtesy of the big bay window in the living room. Enjoy breakfast perched up at the modern kitchen island, before heading out to explore the town and beach. Both children and adults will enjoy the Victorian Pier, complete with a unique array of artist-made arcade games and simulator rides at the Under The Pier Show. Grab an ice cream and spend the day on the sand – we recommend walking to the southern end of the beach, where the quiet dunes provide wonderful picnicking spots. Or, head back home to your own picnicking spot in the shared garden where lavender blooms in wooden planters and a bistro set is ready for you in the sun.

North Sea Waves

If it's proximity to the beach you're after, you're not going to get much better than this apartment. It takes all of a minute to walk to reach the sands of Southwold Beach, famous for its pastel-coloured huts and pier. You can get a sense of this coastal location without even leaving the flat. Simply step out onto the balcony and gaze out over the rooftops to see the town's lighthouse standing proud. There's seating out here and as is often the case with the seaside, watching the sky change colour at the end of the day can be particularly dramatic. Back inside, the home benefits from high ceilings, a period fireplace and a big bay window in the master bedroom, but a recent renovation has modernised the space in unshowy fashion — we're fans of the soothing colour scheme, the smart tiling in the bathrooms and the pair of pared-back chandeliers in the main living area. Simple, but effective.

Don't be fooled by this former barber's shop cute-as-a-button exteriors. Step inside, and this home offers heaps of space for all ten of you (including your four-legged friend) to pile in. Carefully renovated by the same family who has owned the home for the last forty years, pristine interiors await with a restful palette of soft blue hues uniting the space and reminding us the sea is never far away.

For all the cottage's old-fashioned charms – think roll-top bath for post-beach soaks and window seats feathered by cushions for cosy cuppas – this home is perfectly reimagined for modern living. Expect Netflix in all bedrooms, swanky kitchen appliances, blue tooth speakers and Alexa to make life a little easier, and Crittal-style doors leading out onto a suntrap courtyard garden.

When it's time to soak up the seaside charms of Southwold, its historic, wander-worthy streets and idyllic pubs long lauded by artists and writers won't disappoint. The ironic thing about trying to choose somewhere to stay in a location like Southwold is the strong likelihood that you'll be spending the bulk of your time outside exploring the natural riches of the Suffolk coastline. However, this marvellous address offers plenty of incentives to hunker down at home.

When the weather's on your side, you'll want to make full use of the charming outdoor space, which has its alfresco dining table and barbecue for outdoor banquets, as well as the summer house complete with a games room to keep youngsters – as well as not-so-youngsters – entertained.

There's plenty to like in the main house, too. The large glass doors and windows flood the interior with natural light and this dances pleasingly off the smart parquet flooring. We like that the design is pared-back but doesn't look neglected in any way – in fact, the white walls, sleek kitchen surfaces and equally glossy bathrooms all score high on the style stakes.

As mentioned at the start, there's a wealth of spots to explore in the local area. First and foremost is Southwold Beach and Pier, which both take under ten minutes to reach on foot. There are nature reserves and walking routes to discover in the surrounding Suffolk Coasts & Heath AONB, as well as the Southwold Maize Maze only five minutes' drive away.

We're not just looking at one home here, but two. Sat next door to each other in a quiet corner of Southwold, the pair of properties offers guests a bit of flexibility when it comes to sleeping arrangements and privacy. Both have been finished to the same high standard, with tufted furnishings, wooden floors and large kitchens in charming mint or royal blue adding a touch of regality to your stay. The bathrooms, too, are as chic as they come thanks to the slick brick-style tiling and there are also wood-burners in each so you can be assured that you'll always be toasty, whatever the weather outside. If you're looking for excursions that'll leave you in need of a seat by the fire afterwards, you're not short of options. The Denes Beach is only five minutes walk away, while the town's pier takes just over ten to reach.

The sun streams through the large bay windows, making the apartment bright and airy. There’s a soft colour palette of calming shades, with a nod to the seaside setting here and there. Before you head out for the day, make yourself a cappuccino – the fully kitted-out kitchen here even has a milk frother. 

Spend your day sunbathing on the beach, indulging in the nostalgia of Southwold’s iconic pier, and promenading past painted beach huts and colourful flowerbeds before strolling home for supper. Perhaps you’ll pick up fish and chips to tuck into once you’re home.

We love the cosy living room, which comes complete with plush sofas, armchairs and a fireplace for added warmth. When it comes to dining, you’ll be spoiled for choice, with a huge indoor table as well as a comfy outdoor dining area, perfect for those alfresco feasts under the stars. Put together delicious meals in the bright and well-equipped kitchen, that is, unless you prefer to try some of the fantastic restaurants in town. 

As night falls, the lovely bedrooms carry the promise of restful sleep and sweet dreams – you’ll wake up restored and ready for another day of exploring.

This little ground floor apartment is the perfect Southwold bolthole. A great base for exploring this seaside town, it's right in the centre yet tucked away enough to avoid all the hustle and bustle. From the front, there are views across the green to St Edmunds Church, and you can take full advantage of them in the bay window – we thought it was the perfect spot to enjoy a cup of tea or curl up with a good book. The living area and kitchen are open and bright, with a stylish design that has a laid-back nautical feel. Sprawl out on the sumptuous sofa and watch your favourite Netflix shows – a glass of wine, optional – or if you're in the mood to cook, rustle up a romantic dinner in the well-equipped kitchen. We liked the private courtyard, where you can sip your morning coffee and dine in the summer sunshine, but most of all, we loved the location. 

You're mere steps away from the many shops, cafes and restaurants in central Southwold, and just a four-minute walk from the beach and the town's famous pier. Whether you prefer peaceful strolls along the upper promenade or refreshing dips in the sea, we think a couple will be more than happy to call this place home.

While this cottage is a lovely holiday retreat for a couple, we can just imagine the smiles it would bring to a small family. From the turquoise swimming pool and barbecue to the large inset trampoline and lazy hammock, the garden is a wonderland for kids and playful adults looking to make the most of the warmer months in the Suffolk countryside and coast. Inside, you’ll find a characterful space that’s decorated with many tasteful and cool prints that complement the simple neutral furniture. The home has a functional kitchen with a little breakfast island and a round dining table in the living area for eating meals together. Soothe your muscles with a soak in the tub before falling asleep in the cosy, well-designed bedrooms. During the day, when you’re not making the most of the garden, there’s plenty to see nearby – the scenic village of Walberswick is easily walkable and has gift shops, tea rooms and excellent pubs. Southwold is a fifteen-minute drive or bike ride away, where you can wander along the shore, visit the arcade or explore the charming town.

Gather the group together for a special seaside holiday – this home can comfortably accommodate the extended family or a large group of friends. It’s positioned right next to the ocean, views of which you can enjoy from many of the home’s windows or from the beautifully landscaped gardens. Fire up the barbecue for lazy alfresco lunches, or prepare feasts in the well-equipped kitchen to enjoy in the grand dining hall complete with ocean views. The bedrooms are all equally bright and comfortable, but we have a certain soft spot for the upstairs library. With dozens of books to choose from and a home full of ocean-view window seats, both the casual reader and serious bookworm will be utterly delighted. When you take your eyes off the page, you’ll be very conveniently located in the middle of Southwold, less than a five-minute walk from bakeries, pubs and shops, not to mention the lovely stretch of beach. Sunbathe on the golden sands or take long meandering walks along the coast – when you’re this close to the ocean, part of the day is spent just feeling lucky.

This romantic space is a perfect home-from-home for two – an exquisitely refurbished Victorian cottage situated in the heart of Southwold. Think craft shops, galleries, independent boutiques, and plenty of pubs to choose from, all right on the sea. 

The Adnams brewery offers brilliant tours, and its well-stocked shop is full of treats you'll find hard to resist. There's a secret gorse-filled footpath that will take you the back way to Walberswick, and the pretty estuary is a great place to spot seals.

After a day spent on the beach, make the five-minute walk back home to your luxurious getaway. Sprawl out on the velvet couch and take a breather before preparing a delicious dinner in the fully-equipped kitchen, best enjoyed at the window-side dining table. 

Finish off the day with a soak in the roll-top tub before getting comfortable in the hotel robes and streaming a movie in bed, glass of local Adnams wine in hand.

Once a traditional cottage, this home has been renovated into a grand space featuring an impressive modern extension with glass walls and chic interiors. Step through the bi-fold doors onto the sunny deck and Mediterranean-style garden and enjoy evenings gathered around the rustic fire pit. There's also a rear garden with a lush lawn, perfect for outdoor games and fun. Inside, there's plenty of room for your family or friends to spread out in the huge, light-filled, open plan living space – it's perfect for socialising. We love the sea views from the bedrooms too.

You and your guests will be staying in the picturesque village of Walberswick. Spend your morning on the beach just over 300 yards from this home, then grab a bite to eat at the pub 50 yards away, or make your way to Southwold just across the river for a wider selection of restaurants and shops. You can take the small ferry boat to Southwold (summer season only) or there is the footbridge to take you across. This home's proximity to the sea makes it an excellent choice for a seaside getaway.

You'll first be welcomed by the beautiful front facade of the home, fringed with well-kept shrubs and luscious green ivy graciously climbing the wall. Upon entering, the bright and airy vibe will have you feeling refreshed and ready to kick back in the home's comfy interiors. We love the cosy setting of the living room – here you'll find a traditional style fireplace and ambient lighting alongside a relaxing cream colour palette. 

Combining modern designs with antique furniture pieces, soft materials create a soothing atmosphere and blissful comfort to curl up in after days spent hiking, cycling or simply days spent wandering around the nearby coastal villages. 

To the rear of the home, there is a summer house (where you'll find the charcoal barbecue) as well as an annexe space, which has a separate entrance from the garden, its own living room and twin beds. 

With a games room featuring a ping pong table, as well as a large green lawn – perfect for garden games, there's plenty to keep you occupied at this countryside retreat. However, when you are ready to go out and explore the local area, the village of Walberswick boasts an excellent array of independent shops, cafes and restaurants. Meanwhile, Southwold is just a short walk away, famed for its pier, lighthouse, pastel-coloured beach huts and delicious seafood
