We think the best way to discover this exceptionally beautiful landscape, is to stay in an exceptionally beautiful home. On a street of candy-colored cottages, an eight-minute walk from Southwold Pier, your home is painted in a dreamy pale blue, with terracotta roof tiles, and a cute white door beckoning you inside. Built in 1850, you’ll love the original features like exposed wooden beams, a winding staircase, and wood-burning fireplace in the lounge. We think this is the perfect spot to settle down on the sofa, crack open a bottle of fizz, and say cheers to the start of your holiday. Another option would be sipping champagne in the luxurious freestanding tub, or taking celebrations out to your private patio on a sunny afternoon. When you get peckish, take a wander to your nearest chippie, three minutes away. Protect your portion of fish and chips from the seagulls as you stroll one minute down to the promenade and take in the fresh air from the North Sea.

The coastal village of Southwold, like most English seaside towns, has a splendid mix of quaint shops, rustic pubs, and chippies. A twelve-minute walk from its traditional pier, and fourteen from the boating lake, this cottage is a perfect base for exploring the local delights. As you enter through the red brick archway, stepping inside the home is like being transported to old England. You’ll immediately feel a warm welcome for the original wooden beams and fireplace in the lounge. With muted colours throughout, it’s a calming space for a country retreat. White walls bring a fresh and modern feel, with some quirky features like a funky chandelier in the master bedroom. Outside, we love the idea of sitting out in sun on the peaceful patio, with a cup of tea and a novel. And to pique the interest of literature fans, Southwold is a former stomping ground of George Orwell. A far cry from the urban dystopias of some novels, the fictional town from 'A Clergyman’s Daughter' is based on this very village. See if you can find the Orwell plaque in town (hint: follow the smell of fish and chips).

The house has an open-plan kitchen-living-dining area, so sociable evenings with friends or family are a guarantee – and the kitchen has everything you’ll need to cook for the group. Upstairs, the cosy bedrooms, two of which are king-sized, are perfect for crashing out after a day spent walking the nearby nature reserves. Southwold village is less than five minutes away on foot – here you can peer into independent boutiques, stock up at the deli or indulge your inner beer connoisseur at Adnams Brewery. On sunny days, nab a perch on Southwold beach and wander over to the iconic pier. The neighbouring villages and towns are also excellent day trips – Walberswick to the south is excellent for fish and chips while further down, Thorpeness has a Peter Pan-inspired boating lake.

And while some original features remain, namely the inglenook fireplace and shipyard reclaimed beams, the home has been lovingly renovated to bring it right up to the minute. Breakfast is to be taken in the vibrant courtyard, with produce from the nearby greengrocers and family-run butchers. Pack a picnic and slap on your sun cream – the sand and shingle of Denes Beach await. A ten-minute stroll places you right on the seafront, where bracing swims are optional but soft serve ice cream is compulsory. Twenty minutes on foot from the pristine sands of Walberswick Beach, this cottage-like home sits proudly at the end of a quaint row of village houses. Its standout exterior makes it unique on this street. The tasteful, pale-grey slatted wood is reminiscent of an exotic beachside retreat, but white detailing on the pointed roof and oriel windows give the home Nordic character. Stroll along the promenade to Southwold Pier, just five minutes away, or awaken the senses with a brisk dip in the North Sea. Just a couple of minutes' walk from sandy Southwold beach, this home sits right in the heart of a classically charming seaside town. You'll be just a short stroll from the eclectic array of shops, restaurants and pubs the town has to offer, and a visit to the local Adnams Brewery promises a great afternoon activity. 

When it comes to keeping yourselves entertained, your options are endless – treat the family to fish and chips on the famous pier, take a spin on the little boating lake or paddle in the shallows. A little further afield, you can walk or cycle paths along the coastline and through the heathland to Walberswick, Dunwich and beyond. 

Back home, challenge your family to a game of table football in one of the two living rooms, take in the sea views from the top two floors or sit outside on the table and chairs in the paved garden. And when it’s time to call it a night, beautifully furnished bedrooms guarantee a deep, peaceful sleep.

Whisk the family away to this seafront abode, just a short walk from Southwold beach. The sea views are really the highlight here, whether that’s from the bedrooms or the sunny front terrace. There’s only a small courtyard at the rear of the house, so it might not be the best choice for groups that value a large garden for the kids to play in. However, the front garden’s views of Southwold Pier make up for it. The recently renovated home is sleek and luxurious, although we think it might be cramped for all fourteen guests. There are two living areas, though, and four of the six bedrooms are ensuite for comfort. The dining room fits all fourteen guests, too. Don’t fancy cooking? You can take the short 200-yard walk to the pub for dinner.

A Ship of Good Chance

Southwold is home to many classic English seaside sights. You’ll find a pier, fish and chips, pubs, and even a quaint boating lake. But despite such traditional surroundings, this home defies all expectations of a coastal cottage. A nine-minute walk from the breezy pier, you’ll love coming back here to warm up after a windswept afternoon. This modern and unique building was a former smokehouse, still retaining original exterior features and plenty of character inside. The living space has a striking exposed brick wall, going all the way up to the arch of the vaulted ceiling. With bi-folding glass doors leading out to a courtyard, it’s up to you whether you’d like to dine indoors, or alfresco on the paving stones. Or maybe you’ll need to let the English weather decide. Either way, the glossy, white kitchen is incredibly modern, nothing like the rustic image you might have in mind. Upstairs, the master bedroom offers yet another expectation-defying feature – more bi-folding doors with a private balcony and glass balustrade. Look out over the red tiled rooftops at sunset and clink your champagne flutes as you say cheers to the holiday.

Smoulder

Guests who want to be utterly spoiled on their next holiday should consider this home. Spread across two floors in a privileged location in charming Southwold, enjoy the sweeping sea and village green views from the bedrooms and the living area and terrace. 

Homely and contemporary furnishings present a cosy space to snuggle into for those ever-craved moments of relaxation. Adorned with plenty of personal touches, you'll feel the love and care that went into creating this home from the moment you arrive. But that’s not all.

 It sits just fifty yards from the nearest pub – meaning you can be sat out in the atmospheric beer garden overlooking the sea in a jiffy. Also within easy reach is Adnam’s brewery, less than a five-minute walk away, offering tours and a well-stocked shop. For a bite to eat, walk for a few minutes, and you get to the seaside promenade, where you’ll also find some stellar fish and chips.


Seaside Diaries

Situated in the heart of the genteel seaside town of Southwold, this cosy nautical-inspired bolthole is perfect for those who want some rest and rejuvenation on the Suffolk coast. Inside, a soothing white and pale blue colour scheme complements sumptuous furnishings to create a relaxing home from home. Through the bifold doors in the bright kitchen diner, a private paved garden awaits – it was our favourite place to spend mornings with a coffee and evenings with a glass of wine. 

When it’s time to explore your surroundings, walk just 200 feet to the High Street for an array of cafes, shops and pubs. Treat yourself to an ice cream then wander along the promenade for ten minutes until you reach Southwold Pier. If you’d like to really give your legs a stretch, set out on the 6 mile Southwold to Walberswick circular walk.

Southwold Soul

If it's proximity to the beach you're after, you're not going to get much better than this apartment. It takes all of a minute to walk to reach the sands of Southwold Beach, famous for its pastel-coloured huts and pier. You can get a sense of this coastal location without even leaving the flat. Simply step out onto the balcony and gaze out over the rooftops to see the town's lighthouse standing proud. There's seating out here and as is often the case with the seaside, watching the sky change colour at the end of the day can be particularly dramatic. Back inside, the home benefits from high ceilings, a period fireplace and a big bay window in the master bedroom, but a recent renovation has modernised the space in unshowy fashion — we're fans of the soothing colour scheme, the smart tiling in the bathrooms and the pair of pared-back chandeliers in the main living area. Simple, but effective.

Lighthouse Keeper

It’s not often you get the grandeur of a country manor in a central location like this. Sitting within the East Cliffs of Southwold, right in the heart of town, you’ve got myriad restaurants, bars and shops to peruse on your doorstep, alongside a long sweep of sandy beach crowned with a Victorian pier. 

The home greets you as a grand, Victorian villa in honey-hued stone. At the top of a vast lawn, you can dine on the patio in comfy rattan chairs. A pathway through the garden leads right to the soft-sanded beach. 

Inside, we love the farmhouse-style kitchen which feels cosy with its range cooker and raw wood kitchen island. Seabirds and fish-themed object d’art in the dining room are a reminder of your seaside location, and the original fireplaces in here, the living room and bedrooms are a nod to the home’s Victorian roots. Plus, there’s an additional hang-out with bean bags of sofas separate from the main lounge – perfect for kids and teenagers. Bagging the master bedroom means sleeping like a fairytale hero in a four-poster bed with billowing curtains. 

Cliffside Manor

This home has a fabulous location. Based in the heart of Southwold, you'll be a ten-minute walk to Southwold Pier, so sift through the seaside shops, stop at independent cafes, or eat at one of the seafood restaurants with sea views. Alternatively, the landmark Southwold Lighthouse is a five-minute stroll, or spend the day on the beach, around 200 metres away. It's a few minutes' walk from the marketplace, with a range of local shops including a greengrocer with fresh produce, fish mongers, family butcher, and delicatessen. 

Bring some goodies home and cook and drink together in the open-plan kitchen. Later, relax in the lounge with loved ones, put on a good film, and open the French doors for some sea air on summer evenings. On warm days, head out onto one of the two private patios and cook on the barbecue in the sun – this home is the ideal seaside escape.

To the rear of the home, there is a summer house (where you'll find the charcoal barbecue) as well as an annexe space, which has a separate entrance from the garden, its own living room and twin beds.

However, when you are ready to go out and explore the local area, the village of Walberswick boasts an excellent array of independent shops, cafes and restaurants.
