This charming home is full of character. You can look forward to open fireplaces and beamed ceilings, as well as a pretty garden with a seating area for alfresco drinks in the summer. Step back in time at this meticulously restored Regency cottage. Your hosts have poured their time and energy into sourcing period-specific reclaimed materials and equipping the home with antique furnishings to create a cosy and charming English escape that offers the very best of coast and country.

All that effort has clearly paid off, as evidenced by the beautiful interior. From the Victorian roll-top bath to the eighteenth-century range and the wainscotting on the walls – every effort has been made to make it feel as authentic as possible. Even the mod cons, such as the TV, are hidden away inside bread ovens that are built into the chimney so as not to shatter the illusion.

At the top of the narrow staircase is the twin bedroom, through which you enter the main bedroom – a pretty common arrangement for houses of this period.

Step outside, and you'll find a beautifully maintained nature reserve right on your doorstep. Your hosts bought it in 2015 and have spent the intervening years slowly restoring and exposing its beauty, with winding footpaths leading to conveniently placed benches, soaring Scots pine trees and ancient oaks – perfect for a reflective moment in nature or a ride on the supplied bikes.

For adventures further afield, you'll find maps detailing footpaths that run to the world-class concert hall at Snape Maltings, two-and-a-half miles away, and continue through forests and past lakes, leading all the way to the sea at Aldeburgh.

With farmland to the front and the owner’s beautiful private nature reserve behind – this gorgeous home, part of a cluster of mill buildings, is in an idyllic spot. 

Take a stroll through winding footpaths of the reserve that meander through meadows and forests of giant cedars and ancient oaks. In spring, you’ll see enchanting carpets of bluebells, primroses and daffodils, but whatever time of year you come, you’ll be treated to an array of wildlife, from chaffinches to woodpeckers. There are maps to find the footpaths going onwards to Snape Maltings, just over two miles away, and to the sea at Aldeburgh (or it’s seven minutes in the car). You can borrow some bikes too if you prefer to cycle.

You don’t have to go anywhere to get some fresh air, though. There’s a lovely old cobbled, sunny courtyard where clematis and wisteria clamber up the walls – it’s the perfect spot to enjoy the welcome hamper of breakfast goodies. There’s another patio area, too, with fragrant rambling roses – ideal for a glass of wine.

The home itself is a sympathetic conversion of a stable and grain store. We adore the character features inside, such as the traditional 17th Century Suffolk white brick flooring, wood-panelled walls and old oak floorboards. Part of the original manger has been incorporated into the wall dividing the kitchen and the living space area – a lovely touch. Open the stable doors here and listen to the blackbirds singing at dusk. Furnished with antiques, this cottage will appeal to couples and pet owners looking for a luxurious country bolthole.

We can see why this cottage was in The Sunday Times' Coolest 100 Cottages' list – it's a Jacobean dream, full of original character and quirky features. Once home to the miller of Plomesgate Mill, it now houses wonderful antiques, such as a fantastic 1700s Breton bed built straight into the wall, a gorgeous oak four-poster and a working 1800s kitchen range. 

Enjoy a tasty full English breakfast (courtesy of the welcome hamper provided by your lovely hosts Beverley and Martin) in the farmhouse style kitchen. Or when the Suffolk sun is shining, dine in the pretty, wisteria clad courtyard. If you’re lucky enough to be here in August and September, there's a mulberry bush in the grounds that guests are welcome to pick fruit from – perfect for making some jam or muffins.

Something else we adore here is the owner’s beautiful private nature reserve behind this home. Take the dogs for a walk through the meandering footpaths that wind through meadows and ancient woodland. In spring, you’ll see captivating carpets of cheerful daffodils, bluebells and primroses. Whatever time of year you come, though, you’ll be treated to an array of wildlife, from nuthatches to woodpeckers.
 
There are maps to find the footpaths going onwards to Snape Maltings, an arts complex on the banks of the River Alde, just over two miles away. Or head to Aldeburgh (seven minutes in the car) – you can borrow some bikes and cycle there in around thirty minutes too.



Jacobean Gem

Nestled in a farmyard in the beautiful Suffolk countryside, this property offers the perfect place to rest, recharge and forget the stresses of daily life. Start your day with an alfresco breakfast while you listen to the birds sing, and then wander around the three acres of grassland, looking out for wildlife while you breathe in the fresh country air. 

Follow the footpath to the village of Yoxford, which is just one mile away and offers an array of superb eateries. The RSPB Minsmere is a great afternoon out for bird watching and discovering some of the UK's rarest wildlife. Alternatively, head to the coastal village of Dunwich or enjoy the sunny seaside towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold, where you can soak up the sun and take a dip in the sea. 

In the evening, fire up the BBQ and dine outdoors under the stunning sunset before heading inside to cosy up by the warmth of the roaring wood-burning stove.


Kunekune Cottage

Part of a former village hall and theatre, this stunning space is vast, to say the least. It's a sizeable chunk of one of the landmark mock Tudor buildings in Thorpeness, recently converted to a handful of homes. 

The main living area was where village plays and dances were once held, so it's just waiting to be filled with family fun and the sound of laughter. With an open kitchen area, big dining table and cosy sofas, it's built for socialising. Down some stairs, but all with windows and plenty of light, you'll find enough bedrooms to keep even large families happy. But if you're looking for the kids, they're more likely to be hanging out on the mezzanine at the top of the house. Furnished with bean bags, it's a great den for gaming. 

If you can motivate the crew to leave the house together, Thorpeness Beach is just a five-minute walk away, along with the boating lake, the golf course and a range of shops and cafes. Or explore Aldeburgh, once home to composer Benjamin Britten, a five-minute drive away.

With its views over the Suffolk countryside and sumptuous interior design, this renovated former schoolhouse in Dunwich is true rural luxury. The green and grey tones create an aura of calm, while the French doors in the living area allow the outdoors to flow inside seamlessly. The main bedroom is a particular highlight, with a whole wall made of glass – treat yourself to breakfast in bed as you look out across the marshes. 

A short wander will bring you to Dunwich Beach, where you can sit on the shingle with some fish and chips and watch boats bobbing in the waves. Walkers and cyclists can explore the Suffolk Heaths, and nature lovers will enjoy spotting the local wildlife – don’t forget your binoculars. At the end of a wonderful day, pick between the two living areas and snuggle up with a book, or fire up the barbecue and enjoy cooking and eating outdoors with the whole family.

A short stroll will take you to the local pub in Knodishall, ideal for nights when you don't fancy cooking. Or venture a little further to discover Aldeburgh's brilliant boutiques, pebble beach, colourful huts and tasty ice cream parlour – just a ten-minute drive away.

It’s a wonderful spot to gather the troops over lazy breakfasts as you hatch plans for your next adventure in Suffolk.

This quirky cottage is nestled right by the Suffolk seaside in the pretty town of Aldeburgh. Cosy and homely, it's the perfect base for a family trip to the coast. Wake up each morning and enjoy breakfast in the maritime-themed kitchen, or when the sun is shining, take your tea out into the garden to make the most of the nice weather – there’s even a fire pit for cooler days. On chillier evenings, snuggle up by the wood-burning fire in the lounge with a cup of cocoa for a family game or movie night.

An invigorating fifteen-minute walk will take you straight to the beach, where you'll find fishermen working in colourful boats and fresh catches of the day being sold from the huts lining the coastline. Inside, a galleried living space drenched in natural daylight brings all the wow factor – as does the dining area, perched upstairs on a mezzanine to make the most of the views through the oak and glass balustrade. 
 
Friends or family getting together will appreciate how spaced out the home feels, with the bedrooms and three bathrooms placed apart over the four storeys to give everyone a little extra privacy. Meanwhile, kids will love the novelty of the secondary TV den room, which doubles as a study – the perfect spot to crash out with a movie after days at the beach.

Head through the bi-fold doors to the garden for a glass of wine as the sun sets, or cosy up around the log burning stove on chillier days. This 17th-century listed cottage overlooks the green in the pretty village of Westleton. Full of character, this home retains its original brick floor downstairs and its inglenook fireplace. Bask in the lounge packed with period designs, and watch a good film in the glow of the lit wood burner. The cottage has a massive garden to explore - one-third of an acre to be precise. In the milder weather, fire up the barbecue and get cooking together in the country air, and have drinks at sunset for stunning views. You'll be just yards from the village shop and not one but two really good pub restaurants, the Crown and The White Horse. There's even a little bookshop set in the old chapel. It's the perfect base to explore this part of Suffolk, roughly halfway between Southwold and Aldeburgh, with the nearest sandy beach just a six-minute drive away at Dunwich, on the glorious Suffolk coast.

This cottage is perfectly suited to a small family or couple seeking extra space, especially if you’re bringing furry friends with you. There’s a south-facing front garden for sipping your morning coffees, or why not end the evening with a glass of local cider?

This elegant, recently built home is set in the heart of Thorpeness, just a two-minute walk from the beach. Typical black wood clads the exterior while inside, neutral shades, light wood and touches of soft blue echo the tranquil coastal location and make it easy to instantly feel relaxed and at home. A wood-burning stove wood-clad walls and pine furniture creates a modern farmhouse feel, just what we want from a countryside retreat. 

Bi-fold doors lead from the large dining room and kitchen to the enclosed garden. This spot is lovely for summertime drinks under the sun, courtesy of the wrought-iron dining set on the patio. At the bottom of the garden you’ll find a shaded spot with chairs beneath a wooden pergola, surrounded by greenery. 

The village itself is famous for its 1920s mock Tudor houses and 'Meare' - a manmade lake with boats of every colour, perfect for exploring its Peter Pan-inspired islands. The beach is a mix of shingle and sand and you can walk along it to the pretty town of Aldeburgh where you’ll find some of the best fish and chips in the world.

Situated in the pretty seaside village of Thorpeness, the apartment commands magnificent seafront views. We're pretty sure this home is bigger on the inside somehow. With bags of space and a cutting-edge, modern gleam to everything, it's actually a recently renovated 19th-Century cottage. Its charming exterior has been spiced up with new black windows and there's a striking barn-style extension to the rear, where you'll find the bedrooms. 

A vast room with an open layout is the star of the show. So big it takes up almost the whole of the original cottage, it's a mix of contemporary cool and comfy, practical furnishings. We particularly love the three sociable sofas facing each other and the breakfast bar in the well-equipped kitchen. Set on a quiet country lane, you'll have a fenced front garden with picnic benches and a private deck at the back of the house with garden furniture. 

A little more than five miles from Aldeburgh, you'll have easy access to Orford Ness, Thorpeness and more coastal gems, with Snape Maltings concert hall nearby for music fans and loads of footpaths and cycle routes for lovers of the great outdoors.

The apartment is filled with light, making it a bright and welcoming place to call home. You’ll find nods to the nautical in every pocket of this home – and the beach is just a twelve-minute walk away. Pack your bucket and spade and spend the day on the sand, paddling in the sea, or exploring the pier. 

When everyone is sun-kissed, sandy and sleepy, head back to the apartment for a quiet night in. Set the little ones up in the snug watching movies while you open a bottle of wine and relax in the living room. 

In the morning, go for a peaceful stroll along the beachside promenade. The apartment is the perfect coastal hideaway, with easy access to the beach and pier, as well as the heathlands of this part of Suffolk. You’ll want to return time and again.

Appearing in the Doomsday Book of 1086 and home to a 12th-century church tower, the village of Bramfield is steeped in history. This Regency house is no exception, with low beams, sumptuous beds and a crackling log-burner all adding to that sense of tradition. 

There's plenty of space for the whole family, both inside and out. On rainy days, board games, a DVD player, a Wii, a cosy reading snug and a playroom will fend off the boredom, while summer afternoons call for letting loose in the garden. While little ones bounce on the trampoline, parents can relax under the ivy-covered terrace with a glass of wine or bubble in the hot tub as the day fades away. Come dinnertime, whip up a feast in the kitchen or grill up a storm on the charcoal barbecue. And after a long day, nothing feels better than a soak in one of the two lush bathtubs – pure bliss, in our opinion.

Bramfield village is a five-minute walk away – aside from its historical attractions, it also has a lovely pub ideal for a bite to eat at lunch or a restorative mid-walk pint. On sunny days visit Southwold, a thirty-minute drive away, for fish and chips on the shingle beach.

This statuesque townhouse on the Suffolk coast is the perfect retort to the idea that beach-themed decor is kitschy and overdone. Artistic prints of shells and sea life adorn the walls, with nautical blues and whites providing a base for the contemporary furnishings – this home is seaside chic at its most sophisticated. It’s spread out over three floors so there’s plenty of space to socialise and with a self-contained garden flat, the layout works well for two families or a group of friends who would appreciate some privacy as well. 

The first floor offers large French doors leading out to a magnificent standing balcony overlooking Aldeburgh Beach, the boating lake and the sea, while the space is kept cosy and comfortable with squishy sofas, armchairs and an animal print rug. Elsewhere, stripped pine floors, grey tones and elegant decor make up the bedrooms and there's a modern kitchen for the keen chefs of the group. But our favourite spot has to be out in the shaded courtyard, with a nice cup of coffee and a good book. 

Outside, the big draw of this home is that it's right by the shore, meaning paddling in the sea and midnight strolls are just a few steps away. The rest of Aldeburgh is right on your doorstep, with trendy bars and boutiques rubbing shoulders with traditional fish and chip shops and quaint English pubs.

This charming home may be small in size, but it packs a punch when it comes to cosy vibes. During your stay, you'll be surrounded by the verdant fields in this rural retreat, keeping you company whether you're indoors or outdoors. The living space gets a wonderful amount of daylight that streams through the large garden doors, lighting up the seating area as you curl up with a brand-new book. 

The open plan design allows the delicious aroma of a homecooked meal to flow through the house as you patiently wait to tuck in. Enjoy light bites at the break bar, or get the full alfresco experience in the garden as you bask under the sun. We recommend whipping up a homemade picnic to savour underneath the branches of the wonderful tree.

This charming barn conversion is the perfect romantic hideaway for two. In an idyllic location surrounded by wildflower meadows, woods and farmland, you’ll be very well-placed to explore the beautiful Suffolk countryside. Bring the dogs and hit one of many nearby nature trails, catch some fish for supper in the on-site fishing lake or take a day trip to the coast. Southwold is just twenty minutes away, with its sandy beach and pastel-coloured huts, and you can reach the independent shops and beach sculptures of Aldeburgh in less than half an hour. Make sure you stop in one of the local pubs for a pint of the acclaimed Adnams beer. In the evening, sit in the garden with a glass of wine as the sky darkens, and watch the barn owls begin their nightly flight. Or fire up the wood-burner and get cosy inside. If you want to feel closer to nature as you drift off, there’s a double bed in the charming shepherd’s hut in the garden.

We think the best way to discover this exceptionally beautiful landscape, is to stay in an exceptionally beautiful home. On a street of candy-colored cottages, an eight-minute walk from Southwold Pier, your home is painted in a dreamy pale blue, with terracotta roof tiles, and a cute white door beckoning you inside. Built in 1850, you’ll love the original features like exposed wooden beams, a winding staircase, and wood-burning fireplace in the lounge. We think this is the perfect spot to settle down on the sofa, crack open a bottle of fizz, and say cheers to the start of your holiday. Another option would be sipping champagne in the luxurious freestanding tub, or taking celebrations out to your private patio on a sunny afternoon. When you get peckish, take a wander to your nearest chippie, three minutes away. Protect your portion of fish and chips from the seagulls as you stroll one minute down to the promenade and take in the fresh air from the North Sea.

An alternative to the usual beach cottage, this veritable castle by the sea is a perfect getaway for anyone who just can’t cut down a guest list. Seven bedrooms mean there’s room for everyone you want to invite (and the garden and spacious living areas mean that you won’t regret bringing them). The group can spread out between the long, conservatory-like garden with its wall of windows, or hunker down in the sitting room with its beautiful bay window seat. A banquet-sized dining room can fit the whole group and it is a delight with nautical-themed object d’art. And the dine-in kitchen offers a more casual space for breakfast or a quick lunch. Provisions aren’t an issue either, with a dedicated pantry for plenty of storage. 

 Head outside to enjoy the sun in the garden where the kids can run free on the vast lawn. Out here, picnic tables provide the alfresco dining option, perfect for a family feast of fish and chips from your local. 

Best of all, this home is right by the beach – step out of the garden room onto the lawn and you’ll taste the salt on the breeze, and a moment's walk will have you on the sands of Aldeburgh’s beaches.

The Suffolk coast's iconic beach huts have inspired this wooden-clad home, which puts a luxury spin on the seaside. Sat in rolling green gardens, the house has front patios and a top-floor balcony for catching some rays or watching the North Sea roll in from across the fields. If the lure of a swim is too hard to resist, it's a short three-minute walk to Walberswick beach, where sun, sea, and sand rule supreme. Interiors follow a beautifully incorporated monochrome colour scheme: a well-stocked kitchen is painted black, while upstairs bedrooms are flooded with light from the sliding doors and white walls. The large garden is great for letting your imagination run wild, where lawn games and picnics are perfect. We love noisy dinners in the separate dining room, but if the pub is on the cards, classic boozer Anchor is stumbling distance from the home.

Set in the heart of Southwold, this cute-as-a-button cottage was built by French Huguenots in the 17th century. And while some original features remain, namely the inglenook fireplace and shipyard reclaimed beams, the home has been lovingly renovated to bring it right up to the minute. Breakfast is to be taken in the vibrant courtyard, with produce from the nearby greengrocers and family-run butchers. Pack a picnic and slap on your sun cream – the sand and shingle of Denes Beach await. A ten-minute stroll places you right on the seafront, where bracing swims are optional but soft serve ice cream is compulsory. Return home with a steaming bag of fish and chips or nip to the pub, just two minutes from your doorstep, for some proper grub and a well-deserved gin and tonic.

Our favourite part is the compact balcony, where you can sit with a drink and watch life pass by on the promenade below.

Whether you fancy fish and chips along the promenade, a pint at one of the local pubs or sunbathing on the seaside, your options are endless. And it's all within easy reach – exactly what you need for a carefree, coastal holiday.

Twenty minutes on foot from the pristine sands of Walberswick Beach, this cottage-like home sits proudly at the end of a quaint row of village houses. Its standout exterior makes it unique on this street. The tasteful, pale-grey slatted wood is reminiscent of an exotic beachside retreat, but white detailing on the pointed roof and oriel windows give the home Nordic character. Inside, original beams support the sloped ceilings, bringing a rustic vibe. But yet again, there are surprisingly unique and modern features. We love the decorative white fireplace, stylish cushioned window seat, and the incredible upstairs bathroom – an enormous glass shower built into the arch of the roof. Further delights can be found outside. From one of the bedrooms, there’s a cute paved courtyard with a dining set (the perfect spot for sipping Earl Grey in the morning). On the other side, find a lush lawn, enclosed by leafy trees, which feels so secluded and private that you’ll forget that you’re in a village. To explore a busier side to the area, head fifteen minutes by car to Southwold for a walk along the pier and a portion of fish and chips.

At the heart of the home, the living room features a log burner fireplace to curl up around after taking scenic strolls along the Suffolk coastline. There is also a snuggly study room which comes in handy for those who need to work from home during their stay. 

Just a short drive or cycle to the local pub, the Queen’s Head, and nearby Halesworth – enjoy the charming locale with this gorgeous setting as your base.
