The vast gardens are beautiful, a wonderful setting-off point for walks and bike rides in the area. Explore the countryside safe in the knowledge that on your return you can warm up by a roaring fire – no visit to the English countryside can guarantee dry weather, after all. The Aga in the traditional farmhouse kitchen keeps things cosy too. The kitchen is a lovely spot for lively family breakfasts, all seated around the huge dining table tucking into local sausages and eggs. 

Should you choose to dine out, you have your pick of country pubs in the area, as well as restaurants and cafes in nearby Marlborough. There’s something for everyone in this charming corner of the UK. 

Adventure-seekers will enjoy the Cotswold Water Park, which is a twenty-three-minute drive. There’s an assortment of lakes with activities ranging from paddleboarding to wild swimming – that’s if you’ve not had your fill in the swimming pool back at the house. The Basset Down Golf Course is just ten minutes away, providing fun for those that prefer to keep their feet dry.

The building has been owned by the same family since it was built in the 17th century, and you'll find a wealth of history here. There are plenty of traditional details, from the flagstone floors to the rustic wooden beams, but you'll also appreciate the modern touches, like the double-height glass windows that flood the dining room with light. You'll love serving up a traditional roast dinner at the table, which converts into a table tennis table for a post-meal game. Or, if it's a balmy evening, perhaps you'd like to fire up the barbecue and head out to the garden to dine alfresco (make sure you bring your own charcoal). A little path leads you from your private garden to the village playing field, and you might even see the local cricket team playing if you visit at the right time. Poulton also has a quaint pub which is just a few minutes away from your front door, and a pretty church to admire. The town of Fairford is three miles away, where you'll find a selection of shops, and the larger market town of Cirencester is a six-mile drive away. Spend your days touring the charming Cotswold villages, stopping off for afternoon tea as you go, before returning home to a roaring log fire at home. Don't forget to listen out for owls at night – there are a pair of little owls nesting nearby, and you might be lucky enough to hear them.

We don't think it's an over-exaggeration to say that this has to be one of the most remarkable homes in our collection. Perched on the banks of Huntsman Lake, you're never short of an exquisite view because the whole exterior is made of glass. Yes, that's right. The unique property was designed by the Dutch architectural firm Mecanoo and is full of luxuries and surprises.

Head up to the roof, for instance, where you'll find a huge terrace complete with a garden and a sweeping panorama of a further three lakes. Closer to the water, there's another decking area where you can relax on one of the loungers and watch the local birdlife.

The only place in the house which isn't treated to sights of the jaw-dropping scenery is down in the basement. Why head down here, you ask? Well, there's a nine-seater cinema, bar area, Jacuzzi, sauna and full-size snooker table. That's why.

Back upstairs, the interior design does its best to demand your attention against fierce opposition and succeeds at times with the bold modern artwork, designer furniture and staircase carved from a 500-year old tree from Slovenia. The kitchen is a thing of beauty too, with both tandoori and pizza ovens, plus a wine fridge — which the concierge will fill up upon request.

In a home that constantly manages to surprise, the fact that it has excellent eco-credentials is another string to its bow. A combination of an air thermal heat pump, solar panels, heat recovery systems and triple-glazed glass means that energy consumption is low, while the wood on the exterior uses the Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban for waterproofing, rather than chemicals. Venture outside in the summer and you can hire a boat or go wild swimming in the lake, or book a go on the zip-line and experience the landscape from a thrilling perspective.

Although you might think that it would be hard to beat the immediate surroundings when it comes to looks, the Cotswolds AONB can be reached in ten minutes' drive and has some pretty swoon-worthy views itself. The town of Cirencester only takes twenty minutes to reach in the car, too.

The facilities are just a minute’s walk away and when you’re not enjoying a sauna or workout in the gym, you can savour the peace and quiet from your private deck, overlooking a small lake. We love the panoramic windows here which make the most of the water views, and with table football and a communal outdoor play area, kids are well catered for too. While you’d be forgiven for not wanting to leave the estate, if you do decide to venture out you'll discover lots of traditional Cotswold villages just a short drive away.
