Spend your days exploring the area – the city of Ludlow is only a short ten-minute drive away and boasts a castle and charming market, and there are plenty of hiking trails through the hills to add to the itinerary. When you arrive back home, run a bath fed from the local spring and put together a meal in the sociable kitchen. There's even a private cobbled courtyard to sit out in on warm evenings. If you're lucky, you'll catch sight of the swifts and swallows that nest in the area.

The ample hilly walking routes and quaint villages are reason enough to pay a visit to the Shropshire countryside, but just in case you need another incentive, this lodge has the perfect perk in the shape of a hot tub on the terrace. What better way to toast a productive day than by clinking glasses in bubbling water?

We're happy to say that the home's living quarters are just as romantic, with wooden walls, floors and ceilings lending the feel of an Alpine ski chalet, and the fireplace only adding to this sense of cosiness. The French doors bring in plentiful amounts of natural light and also have the added benefit of looking out to the private garden, which even features a waterfall.

When the weather permits, it's easy to pass hours out in the open air thanks to the seating on the covered terrace and the barbecue ready and waiting for summer feasts. You're also spoilt for choice when it comes to nearby locations for bracing rambles, as the home sits on the edge of the Shropshire Hills AONB. Stokesay Castle is five minutes' drive down the road, while the charming country town of Church Stretton is ten minutes in the other direction.

This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa. Toast up those toes in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand – you'll feel all warm and homely in no time at all. Step outside of this 17th-century building and explore one of the loveliest market towns in England that's positively brimming with listed buildings, medieval castles and striking churches. Take a short twelve-minute walk up Corve Street to the town centre and explore this historic place for yourself.

Dating back to the 19th century, this barn in the White Peak area of the Peak District has ben given a new lease of life in recent years. No longer used for farmyard storage, it's now a country getaway full of luxurious touches.

Save for the sections of exposed stonework, you wouldn't be able to guess this home's true age. The design is contemporary but definitely rustic in flavour, with bare floorboards, artfully weathered wooden furnishings and a Scandinavian-style wood-burning stove that's the ideal companion to return to after a long bout in the great outdoors. The svelte rolltop bathtub upstairs is another way to get toasty and warm, too.

As you can probably guess from looking out through the glass doors to bucolic views of rolling countryside, you're not short of walking routes and picturesque scenic points in the immediate locale. This barn conversion in deepest Herefordshire is bursting with rural authenticity. Not only is the property located close to a peaceful nature reserve complete with lakes, but it's also been Grade-II listed to protect its historical importance. After looking around this home, you probably wouldn't guess that the property has been standing for more than a quarter of a millennium, but that's a testament to the care and attention that has gone into the renovation.

Aside from the odd exposed stone wall and the original fireplace, the interior is as contemporary as they come, but great importance is placed on cosiness, too. If the weather's playing ball, you can even eat outside, which will give you an opportunity to admire the bucolic scenery.

Sitting deep within the Peak District, you're certainly not short of walking routes in the local area, plus a couple of historic attractions — Magpie Mine is only a ten-minute walk, for instance. And what would a rural getaway be without a charming pub? You'll probably be happy to hear that the closest one is only eight minutes away on foot.

The cottage is such a cosy space to return to and offers opportunities for unwinding both indoors and outdoors. Make use of the immaculate patio when the sun is shining, or retire inside for a relaxing evening by the the cracking fire. With the Peak District on your doorstep, you won't run out of activities to fill up your day. Hike the Monsal trail or plan a visit to Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall – there's something for everyone.

Walk around your home to discover the secret walking trails through the woods and ask your host to show you the megalithic Rocking Stone nearby. Outside, near a stream, seating allows for alfresco meals and sunset drinks in the hot tub, and the on-site orchard is ripe for fruit picking. Your host can also arrange for a private chef or measures to take the weekend to the next level.

The Briar Rose

Escape to this idyllic Herefordshire retreat, perched on top of a hill beside an iron-age fort and offering breathtaking countryside vistas. Perfect for a multi-generational family stay (with two dogs in tow), alongside the main barn, there's a smaller stone barn (connected on the first floor) offering a snug, two further bedrooms and a well-equipped playroom. If you can lure yourselves from the enclosed private garden, you're just a five-minute drive from the historic market town of Bromyard with delicatessens, butchers and pubs for a taste of county life. 

The Vintage Farmhouse

This beautifully renovated barn is situated in a stunning, secluded position on the edge of Long Itchington village in Warwickshire. Guests can enjoy uninterrupted views of the surrounding farmland from all aspects of the property. The village's pond and green are within walking distance, where visitors can find a pub for local beer and good food. The barn sleeps eight guests (maximum six adults) and features four bedrooms, including one en-suite bathroom, two en-suite shower rooms, and one family shower room. A walled, gravelled courtyard with a slate patio and lawned areas offers a relaxing outdoor space for guests to unwind. Families with children are welcome, with a travel cot, high chair, and stairgate available upon request. Parking for up to four vehicles is available, and there is WiFi throughout the property. A minimum three-night stay is required.

A Day in the Country

This home consists of two adjacent half-timbered properties situated in an idyllic rural holiday setting near Pembridge. The house is perfect for large groups of up to 15 guests, with ample space in the dining room when booked together with the cottage. The property features seven well-appointed bedrooms and four bathrooms, including a ground floor shower room. Guests can enjoy endless entertainment provided by the games room, luxury hot tub for six people, croquet, boules, Xbox One S, Bose SoundLink and a good selection of board games. There is also a tennis court available at the owner's house nearby. The property is pet-friendly, welcoming up to two well-behaved dogs (four with prior agreement from the owner) for a small additional charge. The location is ideal for exploring the picturesque "black and white" village of Pembridge as well as other nearby attractions such as Berrington Hall, Croft Castle and Dunkerton's Cider Mill.

This home was once a hayloft in a former life — the original circular window on the front is so shaped for pitching hay through — but today it's a perfectly cosy space for a rural getaway. Despite this functional heritage, you can safely banish any thoughts of cramped living quarters. Illuminated by a series of skylights, guests get access to a recently refitted kitchen that is plenty big enough for cooking up hearty dinners, as well as a lounge with comfy furnishings for sprawling out upon after long country walks. There is no shortage of outdoor pursuits to undertake in North Shropshire and just across the Welsh border, including wandering along the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, only twenty-four minutes away in the car. The Boat House gastropub on the outskirts of Ellesmere is only six minutes' walk away, too.

Take advantage of sunny afternoons with an invigorating walk through your locale or pack your seaside essentials and drive for ten minutes to Talacre Beach. After a bracing paddle, nip over to Prestatyn for its traditional pubs and laidback restaurants. The house is just a five-minute walk from the centre of Bridgnorth and the train station. You’ll be perfectly positioned to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ironbridge and the Royal Air Force Museum, and you can explore historic Shrewsbury and the Shropshire Hills. You’ll love the fireplace in chilly weather, and the pretty courtyard garden when it’s warmer. Bedroom three is suitable for children, as it’s set up with a single day-bed with a pull-out underneath.

Situated on a quiet cul-de-sac just next to Warwick Castle grounds, this cosy home is an excellent place to rest your feet. Warwick town centre is an easy fourteen-minute stroll away, where you'll find historical museums, independent shops, atmospheric pubs and delicious eateries aplenty. As far as locales go, we think it's hard to beat.

When you're not exploring all Warwick has to offer, make yourself right at home. There's a warm, welcoming feel as soon you step through the front door, thanks to stylish decorations and a plush sofa perfect for sprawling. The TV has Netflix if you fancy a movie night, or if you're in the mood to cook, you'll find everything you need in the kitchen to rustle up a delicious meal – best served, of course, at the dining table, with a bottle of wine and the French doors flung open. During the warmer months, the bistro table in the pretty courtyard invites you to wine and dine alfresco – you can even hear the music from the castle's summer concerts floating in the breeze.

It was game, set and match when we saw this elegant 16th Century grange situated on a quiet lane in the heart of Shakespeare country. Play a spot of tennis on the private courts surrounded by beautiful countryside, have a wander around the formal gardens or picnic on the sweeping lawns. Later, read a book in the hanging tree pod or spot the wildlife around the natural swimming lake. There are lovely sunny patios for alfresco dining, too.

If you want a quiet spot, read the newspapers in the garden room with its botanical print wallpaper, purple sofas and chaise longue. South and west-facing windows create a bright and cheerful space. One of our favourite rooms has to be the orangery with its four sets of double doors, glass lantern roof, swan neck chandelier and long refectory style table primed for convivial, lazy brunches.

There's so much house here – we haven't even mentioned the elegant bedrooms – there are canopied beds, four posters, antiques and designer wallpaper aplenty.

This home is surrounded by some wonderful walks. Ancient Hay Wood is under 7 miles away or culture lovers can head to Stratford-upon-Avon for a performance at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Food lovers, on the other hand, are catered for in Henley-on-Arden, where there are some charming restaurants to discover. Or just relax in the local pub –  there are two friendly ones within a thirty-minute stroll.

We particularly love the open plan kitchen and dining area, which doubles as a study or home office – as this space invites in a free flow of natural daylight from the secluded patio at the back of the home. 

Enjoy a late afternoon tipple at the alfresco dining area following a fun-filled day out discovering the local area. With Warwick castle only a five-minute stroll away and Priory Park as well as an array of shops, eateries, and pubs to explore – all within super close walking distance, there'll be little need to hop in the car at all when staying in Warwick.
