Inside, classically styled furnishings, such as the tufted Chesterfield, oak dining table and the four-poster bed that's come straight out of a fairytale, rub shoulders with the eclectic animal portraits that dot the wall, the antler chandelier and antique-style gramophone — which actually works in case you're in the mood for a boogie. Step inside and you're greeted by an interior dominated by cleansing shades of white and muted greys, with only the odd houseplant and piece of artwork adding a little colour and character. Stylish parquet flooring sits underfoot, while the glossy kitchen is a triumph of minimalist design.

One of a collection of three cottages on a thirteen-acre working farm in West Sussex, this home is nowhere near as rustic as these details might suggest. Step behind the front door and you'll find an interior that's contemporarily styled with a few quirky touches.

The stark white walls and sleek tiling make for a blank canvas against which the colourful cushions and hand-painted kitchen chairs really pop off. As well as that, the modern grey kitchen and pristine bathrooms are a world away from the back-to-basics country cottages that pepper the map in these parts – the rolltop bathtub in particular is sure to make a lot of guests very happy.

Our other favourite spot for sea-sighting is in the beautiful master bedroom where an armchair invites you to curl up on it with a good book and enjoy the rolling of the waves from yet another angle. Outside of your home, you’re just a six-minute walk from the Turner Contemporary art gallery, an eight-minute stroll from the Main Sands beach, while the Dreamland Margate amusement park is fifteen minutes on foot from your door.

Rejuvenate with panoramic sea views every day at this beachfront hideout perched along one of Sandgate’s most sought-after private roads. Boasting direct access to a quiet and secluded stretch of beach, and yet just a 4-minute drive (or thirty-three minutes on foot) from the bustling seaside town of Folkestone, it’s hard to imagine a better location. Wake up with invigorating strolls along the nearby coastal paths. Rustle up a picnic for the beach, or head into Sandgate for a dose of seaside nostalgia with fish and chips and lashings of ice cream. Just outside the village of Little Bentley, a five-minute walk from the local pub and a ten-minute drive from Colchester, this rustic barn is nestled on a working farm. Previously a popular children's café with fun play areas both indoors and out, it's an ancient barn that retains a great deal of rustic charm. 

Quirky and imaginative, it's a family home with an emphasis on keeping the little ones entertained (and safe – it's fully child-proofed). The huge living space is dominated at one end by a log burner, with aged leather sofas and throws perfect for cosying up on winter nights, while the other end features a super cool, Scandi-style kitchen – complete with a professional café coffee machine that's been left in situ so you can play barista. Fun things about this room include the chalkboard wall, a movie projector for film nights and an indoor hammock chair.  

One of the bedrooms is aimed at kids, with twin beds, funky lights, chalkboards, toys and books. But as if that wasn't enough, they have a whole play area in the main space, where imaginations can run wild thanks to a wooden teepee, a wooden shop and a range of homemade superhero capes to choose from. There's more outside with a willow tunnel and mud kitchen. As the sun sets, toast some marshmallows around the fire pit before heading to your cosy beds.

This home in the seaside town of Herne Bay is the perfect getaway for beach holidays, whether the sun is shining or whether you’re caught in the British rain. We would love to start our mornings here with a fresh coffee from the pod machine and enjoy it alfresco on the outdoor decking, breathing in the salty sea air for an invigorating wake-up call.

Inside, there's a log burner for cosy nights in and a charming circular main bedroom. It would be tempting to spend all your time here, wouldn't it? But that would be a shame as Bewl Water is a ten-minute stroll away, pretty Tunbridge Wells is a twenty-minute drive, and Camber Sands is a forty-minute ride.

There are some great hidden arty districts within the city, as well as plenty of opportunity to indulge in some retail therapy, or simply stroll through the town's quaint streets and pay a visit to the striking Clocktower or the imposing Cathedral and the imposing. The building in which this apartment sits has had many functions in its near-two-century history — straw hat factory, corn merchants and estate agents to name a few. Today, however, you'll find a gloriously contemporary home that'll help you have an exemplary stay in Dunstable.

As you look around for the first time, you'll feel instantly at peace, something to do with the soothing greys used throughout. In the living room, a pair of purple sofas, parquet flooring and the chandelier make for a classy space in which to unwind, while the sleek corner kitchen is plenty big enough for cooking up special dinners.

As is the case with many period properties, there's an inordinate amount of natural light from the tall (triple glazed) windows — what else were you to do before the widespread introduction of electric lighting? — but you can also head down to the building's communal courtyard for your fix of Vitamin D, too. There's seating and a table, as well as free Pashley Cycle hire for the duration of your stay.

In local Dunstable, there are enough restaurants and cafes to keep you going, and there's a wealth of attractions that are easily reached nearby. London is only an hour away by train, but slightly closer to home, the Chiltern Hills AONB is rich with walking routes and historic sites — Ashridge Estate is twenty minutes' drive, for instance.

For a secluded coastal getaway just an hour away from London, they don't come much better, or more picturesque, than this stunning cottage at the mouth of the Blackwater Estuary. On one side, you've got yachts and barges passing on the sea lock and, on the other, a nature reserve that's a haven for migrating birds.

Despite its eighteenth-century origins, your hosts have modernised the cottage in a sympathetic way that pays homage to its humble roots, housing the foremen that worked on the canal. So while the exposed beams and wood burner in the living room probably haven't changed much over the years, the stainless steel kitchen and stunning glass sunroom ensure that it works perfectly for modern living. Meanwhile, upstairs, you'll find two elegant king-size bedrooms, a single room (available at an additional cost) and a luxurious marble shower room, with a second down on the ground floor.

Step out, and you'll find coastal walks that start right from your front door and a wide variety of wildlife to catch your eye. For those that want to get out on the water, why not take a trip on a Thames barge along the canal to Maldon (of sea salt fame). Here, you'll find posh pubs and charming tea rooms to cater to your every need. Six miles outside the town, Crouch Valley is home to a growing number of vineyards where you can sample the best that this little corner of Essex has to offer.
