In the ten acres of grounds surrounding the property, you'll discover a heated swimming pool, a barbecue, a huge alfresco dining area and manicured gardens where you can escape for a moment's peace. Say hello to the bantam chickens wandering about, too – they're sure to be firm friends by the end of your stay. There's even a games room so you can start up a table tennis tournament or practise your putting on the mini-green. 

When you fancy a day out, the stately home and gardens at Canons Abbey are twenty minutes away in the car, while the ears of motorsports fans are certain to prick up when they hear the journey to Silverstone's hallowed circuit takes about half that time.

The building in which this apartment sits has had many functions in its near-two-century history — straw hat factory, corn merchants and estate agents to name a few. Today, however, you'll find a gloriously contemporary home that'll help you have an exemplary stay in Dunstable.

As you look around for the first time, you'll feel instantly at peace, something to do with the soothing greys used throughout. In the living room, a pair of purple sofas, parquet flooring and the chandelier make for a classy space in which to unwind, while the sleek corner kitchen is plenty big enough for cooking up special dinners.

As is the case with many period properties, there's an inordinate amount of natural light from the tall (triple glazed) windows — what else were you to do before the widespread introduction of electric lighting? — but you can also head down to the building's communal courtyard for your fix of Vitamin D, too. There's seating and a table, as well as free Pashley Cycle hire for the duration of your stay.

In local Dunstable, there are enough restaurants and cafes to keep you going, and there's a wealth of attractions that are easily reached nearby. Throughout the restoration of the dairy and its conversion into cottages, an emphasis remained on the history of this building, and plenty of the original features remain to make this a charming and comfortable stay. With two wings, it also grants everyone plenty of space, though the mezzanine bedrooms can only be accessed through several ground-floor rooms, which might not feel the most private. Still, it's a beautiful space, and the estate is within the Capability Brown Parkland, first landscaped in the early 1700s and still as lush and inviting, perfect for walks with the dogs.

Pretty as a picture, this period townhouse in the heart of Henley is just the ticket if you're looking for a quintessential English home. Set over three storeys and packed with character, it's a charming address that's rustic on the ground floor and more elegant on the upper levels.

Downstairs, the bare floorboards, botanical artwork and artfully weathered wood furnishings lend the feel of a country pile, and there's no shortage of natural light thanks to the huge skylights that line the ceiling at the far end of the space. The glass doors that sit underneath lead out to a green courtyard complete with seating and a barbecue — talk about being ready for summer.

While some spots of this home have reduced privacy, including the mezzanine bedroom and an en-suite bathroom with two access points, we love the open-concept living space for casual itinerary planning. With ample parking, ticking Blenheim Palace and the Bodleian Library off your bucket list is easy.

In addition to the two cosy sitting rooms – both with woodburning stoves – you'll find a large kitchen, formal dining room, and a piano area for budding musicians. It may not be suitable for children due to the staircase design and historic fixtures throughout the home, but it offers a relaxing retreat for four guests. And with hiking trails on its doorstep, you can be out soaking up the great outdoors in no time.

Inside you’ll find two living rooms, an open-plan kitchen and plenty of space to switch off and socialise. There is also a ground floor bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, and two of the upstairs rooms feature zip-and-link beds – offering flexible sleeping arrangements. Outside, the private garden lends itself perfectly to lazy summer afternoons, while the location means easy access to beautiful walking trails and picnic spots. It’s also less than a ten-minute drive to Chipping Campden.

Relax with a glass of bubbly in the private hot tub with its idyllic views through the farm to the fields beyond (your lovely hosts provide bathrobes and slippers), then savour a barbecue lunch in the sun. It's also the perfect spot to do a bit of stargazing when the night skies are clear and full of sparkling diamonds. Beautiful bi-fold doors provide plenty of light inside this single-level barn, which was once a grain store. We love the gorgeous stone floor and exposed wooden roof beams framing the high ceiling. A fresh colour scheme of pale cream, yellows and greys complement the rustic yet stylish design. If you can tear yourself away from this love nest, there's plenty to explore. Go for a walk to the historic riverside village of Bidford-on-Avon, sixteen minutes on foot, where you'll find an array of charming pubs, restaurants, shops, and a picturesque church built in 1250. Or visit Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon, around a twenty-five-minute drive, while stunning Warwick Castle is a few minutes more in the car. The magnificent Cotswolds are on your doorstep too – Hidcote Manor Garden, near Chipping Campden, just over a fifteen-minute ride, which has one of Britain's most influential Arts and Crafts gardens.

With honeyed stone walls and a Grade II listed status, this bronze South West Award-winning traditional stone cottage is quintessentially Cotswolds. The exposed beams and inglenook fireplaces showcase the building’s considerable heritage (it dates back to 1670), but you’ll find plenty of modern comforts here, as well as cosy styling that favours neutral tones and natural textures. We love that it’s a home for all seasons — stride out on blustery walks in the winter months, before coming back to underfloor heating, a wood burner and thick goose down duvets. In the summer, the British countryside is arguably at its best and here you get access to a large birdsong-filled garden with plenty of shady spots for a gin and tonic. Stargazers are in luck here as there are no streetlights in the local village of Southrop and the Milky Way shines extra bright. And of course, what would a country getaway be without a nearby pub? The Swan can be reached in about three minutes' walk, although the Victoria Inn takes half an hour in case you fancy earning your pint.

Though set in a private fourteen-acre estate, this country cottage is within easy distance of local amenities. The historic hamlet of Market Harborough is just a ten-minute drive away, where you'll find a host of independent shops and traditional British eateries. Stop off at the Haddon Fields on your way back and enjoy a gentle stroll through the woodland. Once you've worked up an appetite, return to your dovecot digs in time to soak up the last of the day's light with an al fresco meal on the terrace.

Sat within the grounds of a working farm in rural Oxfordshire, this cottage is as cute as a button. The interior has been fully modernised — save for the stone fireplace — although it still feels homely thanks to the rural artwork on the walls and the plush furnishings. When you grow tired of idling in the sunshine — if you do — you're in an ideal spot for outdoor excursions. Closer to home, there are a pair of pubs and a cafe in the local village of Adderbury, only twenty minutes away on foot.
