Gather up your nearest and dearest and pile into this palatial Georgian manor dating back to 1720. Nestled in the sleepy Sussex countryside village of Walberton and just a twelve-minute drive from the coast, this is the ultimate staycation abode.

Spill out onto the verandas on a hot sunny day as kids splash about in the heated pool or run amuck on the vast lawns and secret pathways leading to a playground. Or, up the ante with a round of tennis or gym session - there's a hot tub to reward yourself with a post-workout soak.

In the winter months, hunker down beside the brightly burning fires of the vast and stately living spaces oozing with period charm for board games and movie nights. Or challenge your ensemble to a game of hide-and-seek –⁠ just think of the nooks and crannies to explore. 

When tummies start to rumble, fire up the pizza oven or barbecue outside – the sun-soaked terrace and bar area is a joy on a balmy evening. Host a glamorous dinner party in the dining room – the glorious mishmash of antiques and curiosities bring all the ambience. Or seek out one of the gastropubs in the village – the Black Horse gets our vote (fifteen-minute walk). 

Lah-Di-Dah

Close to the picturesque South Downs National Park, this home is on the ground floor of a cottage, nestled in the far-reaching grounds of the owner's estate. You'll find a lot of artwork and antiques here, so it might not be the best place for small children. You're in for a countryside treat, though – the views are wonderful, walking trails are nearby, and the garden faces west meaning the sunsets are truly awe-inspiring. You'll receive fresh eggs from the owner's chickens upon arrival, and you might be paid a visit by the resident Jack Russell terrier during your stay. For lovers of the outdoors, this home has everything.

Country Nest

This charming cottage with bags of character makes for a joyful escape from reality. It’s set on a large, seven-acre estate with a dramatic gravel driveway, but the cottage has its own entrance and is completely private. Inside, your hosts have created a cosy sanctuary with a comfortable, elegantly styled living space and well-equipped kitchen. The neat bedroom has a plump king-sized bed, with velvet cushions and layered blankets which push the snug factor up a couple of notches. In the rolling West Sussex countryside, this home is close to the Cathedral-spired city of Chichester, the cobbled streets of Petworth – with almost more antique shops than people – and the market town of Storrington.

A Quiet Place

For the group that likes to spread out on the country getaways, this converted stable near the South Downs is the perfect choice. There’s two of everything: lounges with wood-burning stoves, country-style kitchens and even two separate backyards each with its own hot tub. The full outdoor kitchen under the pergola can accommodate the most elaborate of barbecues in the summer months and when the weather gets cooler you can get a fire going in the outdoor brick fireplace and huddle on the sofa. Inside, striking equestrian-themed artworks are a nod to the building’s former life as a stable and two dining tables (one in each cottage) with long benches are pure rustic country vibes. As the sun sets, it’s a choice between the circular or square hot tub, both bubbling away beneath stringed lights. Here, you’re on the edge of the South Downs National Park, and bedroom windows overlook the estate’s hay meadow for a bit of tranquillity. Yet, the shops, pubs and coffee shops of Bosham village are a fifteen-minute stroll away where you’ll find wildlife-filled walks in the Chichester Harbour Area of Natural Beauty.  

The Equestrian

Although this three-storey home was only built in recent years, much of the interior design takes inspiration from retro trends. Many of the furnishings are mid-century in style and there are 1970s flourishes peppered about in the form of overhanging metallic lamps and swirly feature walls in the living rooms. That being said, the pristine white kitchen is as modern as they come, as are the bathrooms. Outside, guests get the benefit of not one, but two terraces, with space to cook, eat and relax. The location gives plenty of options for excursions in the great outdoors, too. It's possible to get on a footpath running alongside the River Adur in less than a minute on foot which is a great base for kayaking and paddleboarding, and leads to a 37-mile long track through the South Downs National Park. Shoreham Beach is a mere ten-minute walk via the high street which boasts an abundance of pubs, restaurants and shops, and the Brighton seaside only takes twenty-three minutes to reach in the car.

Chalkhill Blue

Fall in love with Worthing from your sea view apartment, just a short walk from the pier. The quintessential seaside town is packed with nostalgic charm – think morning walks along the beach, fish and chips on the sand, arcade games aplenty, and old-school ice cream parlours galore. But it’s much more than that – Worthing has made a name for itself with incredible street art, restaurants, and hip cafes. It combines cool, modern eateries and new-wave delis with the nostalgia that we know so well. 

When you’re not exploring Worthing, your contemporary apartment is the perfect place to unwind. Relax on the plush sofa, chat around the bar-style table while sipping on cocktails, and best of all, make the most of the sunny terrace. With views of the sea, there’s no better place to savour a refreshing morning coffee or enjoy a crisp glass of wine at sunset. 

The Sea's Doorstep

This pet-friendly barn conversion in West Sussex is perfect for a couple or solo traveller seeking a peaceful rural retreat. A rock garden and tended lawn provide ample opportunity for sundowners and alfresco meals, while inside, cosy country-style decor and beamed ceilings provide plenty of English charm. You’ll need to climb a flight of stairs to reach the mezzanine bedroom but waking up to apex views of the surrounding nature is a fair reward. The bus stop at the end of the road offers regular services to Chichester, while the village of Funtington – right on the home’s doorstep – has a selection of restaurants and pubs to enjoy. 


The Barn Light

This address might look effortlessly stylish on the surface, but look a little closer and you'll find that all the home comforts are present and correct. In the living room, for instance, there's a log-burner that you can get crackling while you loll about on the plush sofas facing the warmth. Up in the master bedroom — itself painted in a sultry tone of navy blue — there's an eye-catching copper bathtub that will have you scheduling a long uninterrupted soak into your itinerary. The rest of the house is dotted with house plants — especially in the light and airy kitchen-dining room — but if you want a bit more horticulture, head out into the private patio space, which is lined with flourishing beds and potted foliage. There's plenty of seating out here for taking full advantage of bursts of unseasonable weather, as well as a barbecue in case you're truly lucky. Even better is the fact that Chichester's main landmarks are within such easy walking distance. The Cathedral takes five minutes to reach, as does the town's castle.

Courtyard Breakfast

Sleepy village life is on your doorstep at this charming end-terrace cottage in Amberley – the pearl of Sussex. Set at the foot of the South Downs and offering knockout views of the Amberley Wildbrooks nature reserve, it’s no surprise this is a declared Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A home for all seasons, winters are made for hunkering down beside the fire after country walks on the Downs. Meanwhile, summer is all about barbecues in the pretty walled garden. A cottage of this heritage comes with its quirks. Guests should be aware the twin bedroom is pocket-sized, and there are some steep stairs to contend with. But that's all part of the charm.

Pearl of Sussex

Nestled deep in the English countryside, far away from the blaring horns and pneumatic drills of the city, this charming home provides the perfect base for a picturesque holiday pulled straight out of the pages of a ‘Famous Five’ story.

You’ll be struck by how charming the interior is as you pass through its doors. With its open-plan living space offering both ample room and plenty of style.

When you want to freshen up after a hike, you’ll be torn between the free-standing copper bath and the rainfall shower. In warm weather, you’ll enjoy meals out in the alfresco dining area. When it’s a bit nippy, you’ll relax sitting around the fireplace.

Offering direct access to the charming wooded areas of Hesworth Common (perfect for picnics or a trip to a country pub) and within walking distance from farm shops and an award-winning shop selling local produce, this home is in a fantastic location for getting a feel for the local area. We recommend trying the local wine – the area is becoming renowned for its vineyards and wineries.

The home can also serve as a base to explore a little further afield –  Chichester, Brighton, and Portsmouth all make for ideal day trip spots.

This characterful cottage is perfect for a romantic getaway. Set among 80 acres of vineyards, woodland, and fishing lakes, with views as far as the eye can see from the private patio, you’ll feel like you’ve escaped to the country here. We love the unique features inside – like the circular-shaped lounge and curved staircase – and who could resist a relaxing soak in the Jacuzzi bathtub? Location-wise, you’re perfectly placed for hikes and bike rides in the surrounding countryside and for adventures further afield, the market town of Farnham is 11 miles away and historic Winchester is a 20-mile drive.

The King's Gate

Once home to bakers and servants working in nearby Arundel Castle, this colourful cottage is packed full of character. Located in Arundel town centre, you’ll be able to stroll to all the must-sees, including the castle, the cathedral, and the River Arun. The home itself boasts eclectic decor and a private garden – ideal for stargazing on a clear night as you’re near a Dark Sky Reserve. The sleeping arrangements here won’t suit everyone – the second bedroom is in a separate cabin accessed via the garden – and the home isn’t suitable for children aged 2-12. We think this place is a good choice for a two couples, or a family with teens, wanting a unique stay in a central spot.
