Nestled into the rolling hills of the South Downs by Amberly Wild Brooks, this home blends rustic living with an incredible range of modern luxuries to create a unique space that inspires you to slow down and spend time with your loved ones. Boasting 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape, a meditation pod, a sundeck, and private bluebell woods, we can’t think of a better place to unwind. Head out to the hills to explore the impressive sceneries (host Jemma also offers bike rentals), then come home and soothe your aching muscles in the wood-burning hot tub. Jemma also offers a menu of wellness retreat packages at an extra cost (think along the lines of yoga and pilates classes, sound baths and meditation instructors). And if you want to learn a new skill, you can also book vegan and raw food cookery courses – there are even creative tutorials in things like art and photography. At night, we recommend cooking up a storm in the bespoke kitchen (or hiring a private chef to do the honours), socialising with friends, and taking in your stunning surroundings.

You'll find a lot of artwork and antiques here, so it might not be the best place for small children. This address might look effortlessly stylish on the surface, but look a little closer and you'll find that all the home comforts are present and correct. In the living room, for instance, there's a log-burner that you can get crackling while you loll about on the plush sofas facing the warmth. Up in the master bedroom — itself painted in a sultry tone of navy blue — there's an eye-catching copper bathtub that will have you scheduling a long uninterrupted soak into your itinerary. The rest of the house is dotted with house plants — especially in the light and airy kitchen-dining room — but if you want a bit more horticulture, head out into the private patio space, which is lined with flourishing beds and potted foliage. There's plenty of seating out here for taking full advantage of bursts of unseasonable weather, as well as a barbecue in case you're truly lucky. Even better is the fact that Chichester's main landmarks are within such easy walking distance. The Cathedral takes five minutes to reach, as does the town's castle.

Located right in the heart of Arundel, this Grade-II listed Victorian townhouse has stunning views over the castle and the Gothic cathedral on top of the hill. Originally designed and built by Joseph Hansom (the architect behind Arundel Cathedral), there are plenty of traditional features inside to admire. Modern gadgets like a flat-screen smart TV and slick wine fridge are seamlessly incorporated into the decor alongside original fireplaces, windows and chandelier-hung ceiling roses. We loved the mix of furniture, with individual pieces specially selected to fit each room, as well as the charming courtyard garden. Overall, we felt the home was warm, inviting, comfortable and very clean. Add in the location – just a two-minute walk from the high street – and it's a winner. Arundel is quaint and charming with pretty shops, art galleries, pubs, coffee shops and a fairytale castle to discover. Right by the river Avon and near to excellent walks in the South Downs, you're also close to great spots on the South Coast – it's less than twenty minutes to Worthing and about a forty-minute drive from Brighton. This is a lovely option for a family looking to linger for a while and enjoy a slower pace of life, within easy driving distance of the seaside.

Carefully renovated with comfort in mind, this barn opens its doors to a peaceful retreat in Chichester. You’ll need a car to get the most out of your stay, but it’s just a short drive to the South Downs National Park and Chichester Harbour. The grounds are shared with a neighbouring home, but you will have a private terrace – perfect for sipping sundowners, and there are lovely garden views from the living room. The ground floor bedroom makes this home easily accessible for guests with reduced mobility.

Situated on a small family-run agricultural nursery, we think this luxury lodge is the perfect place to switch off and recharge. Not only is the location excellent – the idyllic South Downs are practically on your doorstep – but the attention to detail here is second-to-none. Rainfall showers and eco-friendly toiletries in the bathrooms, Netflix on the smart TVs and a panini maker in the kitchen are just a few of the things we love. The design is impeccable with blue velvet, dark greys and lots of wood. It's the perfect blend between rustic, country living and contemporary comforts, with chic furniture handmade by host Lucca. Speaking of, he'll leave a welcome hamper brimming with goodies for you to enjoy, and depending on the season, it'll contain fresh Italian fruit and veg grown on their farm. 

Days start and end here out on the deck, enjoying alfresco breakfasts in the sun and evening dips in the private hot tub. In between, set off and explore the local area – just walk out the front gates and you're on the National Trust South Downs footpath, leading towards Highdown Hill. A fourteen-minute walk away is the local pub, a few eateries and shops in Ferring, and it's only a five-minute drive to the beach. And with Worthing, Chichester and Brighton all less than an hour by car, you'll have plenty of options for adventures around West Sussex.

This former bakery has plenty of character and charm, making it a solid option for an escape to West Sussex. Built in the 1800s, it's been well maintained, renovated to a high standard and tastefully decorated throughout. We loved the original features (like the sash windows, fireplaces and bakers’ oven); good-size modern kitchen, with a central island for chatting over a glass of wine; king-size beds with crisp, fresh linens; and the sweet courtyard garden: a real little sun trap. The home's location, right in the heart of the town of Arundel, gives easy access to coffee shops, pubs and independent shops – particularly for those who love browsing for art and antiques – as well as stunning views over the famous castle as well. You’re just a few minutes drive to great spots on the South Coast – less than 20 to Worthing; 40 into Brighton – making this a great spot, whether you're into sightseeing or just atmospheric and cosy places to stay.

Sandwiched between the South Downs National Park and the Chichester Harbour AONB, it doesn’t get more away-from-it-all country glam than this little Sussex nook. It’s on the edge of a wildlife meadow, so sessions on the private terrace come with the soundtrack of birdsong and a gentle summer breeze. Spot wildlife from the warmth of the private hot tub on the deck, or perhaps from the swing seat, strung up on the porch. 

The interior is a reflection of the wilderness location, with wooden artworks featuring fawns and birdlife on display in the cosy bedrooms. The window seat in the master makes for the perfect reading nook, overlooking the meadow, and there’s a desk in here should you need to work remotely. The vaulted, wood-beam ceiling is twisted with stringed lights for a fairytale effect and there’s plenty of room at the rustic wooden table for the group to dine inside (if you’re not enjoying an alfresco meal on the terrace, that is). Come evening time, the plush sofas in the living room are set around a wood-burning stove.

Set on a farm in West Sussex, this charming cottage is the perfect couple’s retreat or solo getaway. The interiors are bright and fun, with pops of block colour punctuating each room. Downstairs there’s a cosy living area with a wood burning stove, which you can put a log on and curl up in front of a film in the evening. The modern kitchen is well stocked for cooking up homely meals, or on warm days fire up the barbecue and enjoy lunch alfresco at the wooden table outside. Look out the kitchen window and you might spot Nellie and Maggie, the shaggy Shetland ponies whose paddock is twenty feet away. Feel free to give them a carrot or two! 

The cottage is on a farm run by your hosts. You are surrounded by the great outdoors here, and you’ll have direct access to footpaths and bridleways which take you through the farm and out into the picturesque countryside beyond. As you walk out, stop by the Stud house, where you can say hello to the native ponies in their stable. The village of Billingshurst is a four-minute drive away, where you’ll find a supermarket and some local country pubs. Pay a visit to the Nyetimber vineyard, a fourteen-minute drive away, and pick up some of their excellent sparkling wine. After a day of exploring, there’s nothing better than enjoying a glass of bubbly back at home as the sun sets over the fields.

Occupying the top two floors of this former Victorian photographer's studio is a light-filled, contemporary space that's perfect for anyone looking to explore the South Downs. From here, you can enjoy all the benefits of easy access to everything you need, with the tranquillity of a rural setting. Your hosts have designed the entire apartment with the needs of their guests in mind. The three individually decorated, stylish bedrooms offer luxurious accommodation for up to six people on the first floor. Plus, there's a sofa bed in the studio for an additional two guests. The top floor is more vibrant, with bold colours and eye-catching design, including what we would usually call floor-to-ceiling windows, except these ones take over half of the roof as well. The kitchen is equipped with everything the savvy chef might need to rustle up delicious group dinners. Step onto the streets of the historic market town of Petworth, and you'll find antique shops, cafes and the National Trust Petworth House and Park. Slightly further afield, you're a mere twenty minutes from glorious Goodwood – famous for its historic racetrack and Festival of Speed – and half an hour from the coast at Climping. There are so many events locally that it's well worth a bit of research before you arrive.

The Photographer's Studio

One of a collection of three cottages on a thirteen-acre working farm in West Sussex, this home is nowhere near as rustic as these details might suggest. Step behind the front door and you'll find an interior that's contemporarily styled with a few quirky touches.

The stark white walls and sleek tiling make for a blank canvas against which the colourful cushions and hand-painted kitchen chairs really pop off. As well as that, the modern grey kitchen and pristine bathrooms are a world away from the back-to-basics country cottages that pepper the map in these parts – the rolltop bathtub in particular is sure to make a lot of guests very happy.

When the weather's on your side, there's a private outdoor space with an alfresco table and barbecue, but it's also lovely to wander about the shared parts of the site. The hosts run a private stud and breed native ponies, so if you're lucky, you might see a foal or two during your stay.

The home is blessed when it comes to location, sitting almost equidistantly between South Downs National Park and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – as you might imagine, there's a wealth of walking routes to embark upon that start straight from the farm or just a short drive away. The seaside isn't too far away, either – you can get over to Worthing in just over half an hour in the car. 



Mane Character

Well, there's no mystery why this home has made our collection. The apartment is right on the beach in East Wittering, so as you can see, it has great views of the sea from the private sunny balcony as well as most rooms. Yes, the galley kitchen is a bit compact if there are more than two people in there, but it's modern and well-equipped. If you tire of East Wittering Beach (unlikely we know), West Wittering Beach, with its views of Chichester, is less than a ten-minute drive. Otherwise, Chichester Marina is just over ten minutes away in the car, and Goodwood House is around a thirty-minute ride.

Being a loft flat, the sunlight pours in from skylights here, and the inclusion of a freestanding bathtub is a welcome addition after a hike. A timber cabin surrounded by meadows and woodland might sound like a back-to-basics retreat, but at this home in rural Sussex, guests will have a wealth of luxuries at their disposal.

This is before you've even entered the home, as well. Out on the decked terrace, there's a hot tub from which you can enjoy the tranquillity of the local area, as well as a sofa and swing seat. When the sun goes down, there are festoon lights to turn on, plus a charcoal barbecue and fire pit to keep you fed and warm.

If the temperature dips a little too low, there's a wood-burning fireplace inside the home, as well as plenty of cosy blankets and board games. Inside, the design is rustic in places, as with the weathered wood dining table, but the sleek black kitchen and stylish bedrooms are nothing but modern.

When it comes to filling up your itinerary, there's so much to see and do nearby. The sprawling South Downs National Park starts a minute's drive to the north, while the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty sits a similar amount of time in the opposite direction. The town of Bognor Regis and its beach can be reached in twenty-five minutes.

Step into the main house and socialise as you prep meals in the kitchen before stepping out onto the spacious patio, where you'll find a barbecue ideal for cooking outdoor feasts over the summer months. Of course, if the weather's not playing ball, there's always the projector and surround sound system in the living room for immersive movie nights.

Away from your semi-secluded haven, the shingle beach at Saltdean offers you a chance to paddleboard or take a dip in the Grade II-listed art deco lido. Then, continue west along the coast, and you'll find yourself in the vibrant seaside town of Brighton in under half an hour. However, if you prefer to use your breaks as a chance to disconnect, the national park on your doorstep offers over 2,000 miles of rights of way so you can enjoy some quiet reflection as you hike through the hills.

And there’s heaps of space to spill out in the generously sized bedrooms – spread out over two floors and united by a tasteful mix of contemporary and rustic interiors. Lofty high ceilings, polished concrete flooring (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty), and sleek architectural glazing make quite the first impression. While a bespoke shaker kitchen with all the mod-cons (think Everhot range cooker and wine cooler) and beautifully curated objet’s de art bring character and soul.
