Although this three-storey home was only built in recent years, much of the interior design takes inspiration from retro trends. Many of the furnishings are mid-century in style and there are 1970s flourishes peppered about in the form of overhanging metallic lamps and swirly feature walls in the living rooms. That being said, the pristine white kitchen is as modern as they come, as are the bathrooms. Outside, guests get the benefit of not one, but two terraces, with space to cook, eat and relax. The location gives plenty of options for excursions in the great outdoors, too. It's possible to get on a footpath running alongside the River Adur in less than a minute on foot which is a great base for kayaking and paddleboarding, and leads to a 37-mile long track through the South Downs National Park. Shoreham Beach is a mere ten-minute walk via the high street which boasts an abundance of pubs, restaurants and shops, and the Brighton seaside only takes twenty-three minutes to reach in the car.

Located in the heart of West Sussex, this cute cottage is the perfect retreat for exploring the South Downs, Brighton, and the surrounding area of natural beauty. This place is a walker's paradise with meandering countryside paths right from its doorstep. In fact, it's just a twenty-minute stroll to the local pub and the village of Henfield for provisions. Inside this compact home, there’s the all-important wood-burning stove, as well as underfloor heating and nice touches such as the handmade linen. The highlight for us though is the sunny garden with its summer flowers such as scented lavender and roses.

Situated on a small family-run agricultural nursery, we think this luxury lodge is the perfect place to switch off and recharge. Not only is the location excellent – the idyllic South Downs are practically on your doorstep – but the attention to detail here is second-to-none. Rainfall showers and eco-friendly toiletries in the bathrooms, Netflix on the smart TVs and a panini maker in the kitchen are just a few of the things we love. The design is impeccable with blue velvet, dark greys and lots of wood. It's the perfect blend between rustic, country living and contemporary comforts, with chic furniture handmade by host Lucca. Speaking of, he'll leave a welcome hamper brimming with goodies for you to enjoy, and depending on the season, it'll contain fresh Italian fruit and veg grown on their farm. 

Days start and end here out on the deck, enjoying alfresco breakfasts in the sun and evening dips in the private hot tub. In between, set off and explore the local area – just walk out the front gates and you're on the National Trust South Downs footpath, leading towards Highdown Hill. A fourteen-minute walk away is the local pub, a few eateries and shops in Ferring, and it's only a five-minute drive to the beach. And with Worthing, Chichester and Brighton all less than an hour by car, you'll have plenty of options for adventures around West Sussex.

Dew on the Vine

These converted stables make for a peaceful, rustic escape. Whether you're planning country walks on the South Downs, a trip down to the coast or little more than reading in the cosy living room, everything here should be done at a leisurely pace. The home is set in seven acres of lush green land – yours for the exploring. Inside, it's a lovely mix of country chic and clean modern lines, with a feature reclaimed wood wall, comfy sofa and plenty of homely touches. It's only half an hour from Brighton by car, with some excellent pubs nearby, and if you're into wine, you'll be keen to visit the local vineyards.

Strong and Stables

Set just opposite Worthing Beach, this period apartment certainly delivers on location. It's seafront living at its finest, and it's no surprise that the views here are second to none. The best spot to enjoy them is on the private balcony – especially when the sun rises – though the living area also boasts panoramas worth writing home about. While two guests will sleep on the sofa bed, with scenery like that to wake up to, we don't think they'll mind.

This charming cottage with bags of character makes for a joyful escape from reality. It’s set on a large, seven-acre estate with a dramatic gravel driveway, but the cottage has its own entrance and is completely private. Inside, your hosts have created a cosy sanctuary with a comfortable, elegantly styled living space and well-equipped kitchen. The neat bedroom has a plump king-sized bed, with velvet cushions and layered blankets which push the snug factor up a couple of notches. In the rolling West Sussex countryside, this home is close to the Cathedral-spired city of Chichester, the cobbled streets of Petworth – with almost more antique shops than people – and the market town of Storrington.

A Quiet Place

The world is your oyster at Head Over Hills. Nestled into the rolling hills of the South Downs by Amberly Wild Brooks, this home blends rustic living with an incredible range of modern luxuries to create a unique space that inspires you to slow down and spend time with your loved ones. Boasting 360-degree views of the surrounding landscape, a meditation pod, a sundeck, and private bluebell woods, we can’t think of a better place to unwind. Head out to the hills to explore the impressive sceneries (host Jemma also offers bike rentals), then come home and soothe your aching muscles in the wood-burning hot tub. Jemma also offers a menu of wellness retreat packages at an extra cost (think along the lines of yoga and pilates classes, sound baths and meditation instructors). And if you want to learn a new skill, you can also book vegan and raw food cookery courses – there are even creative tutorials in things like art and photography. At night, we recommend cooking up a storm in the bespoke kitchen (or hiring a private chef to do the honours), socialising with friends, and taking in your stunning surroundings.

Head Over Hills

A stack of firewood, a twisting rose and a huddle of foxgloves greet you at this restored 18th-century flint cottage. Tucked away behind the old schoolhouse in the peaceful village of Angmering, a handful of pubs and shops are a few minutes walk from the front door. Inside, exposed stone feature walls, masonry marks from 1666 and latched, wood doors retain the home’s history. French doors open out from the cosy little living room to the garden – a walled oasis filled scattered with flowering pots and furnished with a bench and bistro set for two. It’s the perfect spot for a G&T in the evening. A welcome pack awaits your arrival in the kitchen, packed with organic produce and luxury tea and coffee to get you started. Make the 10-minute drive to the castle-topped village of Arundel to refill the cupboards from the delis and farm shops in the area. Just beyond Arundel, the walking trails of the South Downs await those who really want to get out in the countryside.

School of Thought

Sleepy village life is on your doorstep at this charming end-terrace cottage in Amberley – the pearl of Sussex. Set at the foot of the South Downs and offering knockout views of the Amberley Wildbrooks nature reserve, it’s no surprise this is a declared Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A home for all seasons, winters are made for hunkering down beside the fire after country walks on the Downs. Meanwhile, summer is all about barbecues in the pretty walled garden. A cottage of this heritage comes with its quirks. Guests should be aware the twin bedroom is pocket-sized, and there are some steep stairs to contend with. But that's all part of the charm.

One of a collection of three cottages on a thirteen-acre working farm in West Sussex, this home is nowhere near as rustic as these details might suggest. Step behind the front door and you'll find an interior that's contemporarily styled with a few quirky touches.

The stark white walls and sleek tiling make for a blank canvas against which the colourful cushions and hand-painted kitchen chairs really pop off. As well as that, the modern grey kitchen and pristine bathrooms are a world away from the back-to-basics country cottages that pepper the map in these parts – the rolltop bathtub in particular is sure to make a lot of guests very happy.

When the weather's on your side, there's a private outdoor space with an alfresco table and barbecue, but it's also lovely to wander about the shared parts of the site. The hosts run a private stud and breed native ponies, so if you're lucky, you might see a foal or two during your stay.

The home is blessed when it comes to location, sitting almost equidistantly between South Downs National Park and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – as you might imagine, there's a wealth of walking routes to embark upon that start straight from the farm or just a short drive away. The seaside isn't too far away, either – you can get over to Worthing in just over half an hour in the car.

Set on a farm in West Sussex, this charming cottage is the perfect couple’s retreat or solo getaway. The interiors are bright and fun, with pops of block colour punctuating each room. Downstairs there’s a cosy living area with a wood burning stove, which you can put a log on and curl up in front of a film in the evening. The modern kitchen is well stocked for cooking up homely meals, or on warm days fire up the barbecue and enjoy lunch alfresco at the wooden table outside. Look out the kitchen window and you might spot Nellie and Maggie, the shaggy Shetland ponies whose paddock is twenty feet away. Feel free to give them a carrot or two! 

The cottage is on a farm run by your hosts. You are surrounded by the great outdoors here, and you’ll have direct access to footpaths and bridleways which take you through the farm and out into the picturesque countryside beyond. As you walk out, stop by the Stud house, where you can say hello to the native ponies in their stable. The village of Billingshurst is a four-minute drive away, where you’ll find a supermarket and some local country pubs. Pay a visit to the Nyetimber vineyard, a fourteen-minute drive away, and pick up some of their excellent sparkling wine. After a day of exploring, there’s nothing better than enjoying a glass of bubbly back at home as the sun sets over the fields.

We're not exaggerating when we say this home is seconds away from the seaside. Perched next to East Preston's shingled shores and a short walk from the village's shops and eateries, you're no more than a five-minute stroll from everything you'll need. Furry friends and little ones will enjoy the sprawling garden at home. Complete with an alfresco dining table, a tyre swing, and lots of space to run amuck, it's an excellent option for post-beach hangouts. Inside, it's bright, cosy and roomy enough for the whole family. Most bedrooms are upstairs, and the ground-floor bunk bed is only suitable for children. Still, this home makes a delightful coastal retreat, indeed.

Inside, the living area is packed with colour and comfort. Upstairs, you'll find stripped-back floorboards and antique furnishings. There's no denying that this home has been restored beautifully, but it's eco-friendly too. 

After strolling along the bridleway, bake a shepherd's pie in this vibrant kitchen and gather your family around the many-hued dining table. Feel free to rummage through the bookshelf and light the log burner, or see what's new on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

There's a barbecue on hand and spare wellies here too – so you can enjoy country life in all winds and weathers. Across the beloved courtyard, don't forget to challenge your loved ones to a match on the old Bonzini football table in the games room.

This is a place where you can reconnect with nature. Ponies are bred on this farm, so you might even be lucky enough to spot a foal. There isn't much light pollution around either, which means you can see starry skies on clear nights.

In the peaceful village of Westmeston, this home is spread across a semi-detached cottage as well as a single-story studio space. In the main cottage, you'll find a larger space with a dining area, kitchen and living room for all guests to come together. Meanwhile, the studio features another open living space with its own independent amenities. The two garden areas are each equipped with outdoor seating and hot tubs. However, with underfloor heating across the home, it is equally as inviting here during the colder months. Plus, you'll be just steps away from footpaths leading directly to The South Downs National Park and two local pubs. 




The Greenshaw

This former bakery has plenty of character and charm, making it a solid option for an escape to West Sussex. Built in the 1800s, it's been well maintained, renovated to a high standard and tastefully decorated throughout. We loved the original features (like the sash windows, fireplaces and bakers’ oven); good-size modern kitchen, with a central island for chatting over a glass of wine; king-size beds with crisp, fresh linens; and the sweet courtyard garden: a real little sun trap. The home's location, right in the heart of the town of Arundel, gives easy access to coffee shops, pubs and independent shops – particularly for those who love browsing for art and antiques – as well as stunning views over the famous castle as well. You’re just a few minutes drive to great spots on the South Coast – less than 20 to Worthing; 40 into Brighton – making this a great spot, whether you're into sightseeing or just atmospheric and cosy places to stay.

Located right in the heart of Arundel, this Grade-II listed Victorian townhouse has stunning views over the castle and the Gothic cathedral on top of the hill. Originally designed and built by Joseph Hansom (the architect behind Arundel Cathedral), there are plenty of traditional features inside to admire. Modern gadgets like a flat-screen smart TV and slick wine fridge are seamlessly incorporated into the decor alongside original fireplaces, windows and chandelier-hung ceiling roses. We loved the mix of furniture, with individual pieces specially selected to fit each room, as well as the charming courtyard garden. Overall, we felt the home was warm, inviting, comfortable and very clean. Add in the location – just a two-minute walk from the high street – and it's a winner. Arundel is quaint and charming with pretty shops, art galleries, pubs, coffee shops and a fairytale castle to discover. Right by the river Avon and near to excellent walks in the South Downs, you're also close to great spots on the South Coast – it's less than twenty minutes to Worthing and about a forty-minute drive from Brighton. This is a lovely option for a family looking to linger for a while and enjoy a slower pace of life, within easy driving distance of the seaside.

Linger Awhile

This beautiful seaside holiday home is designed with families in mind, with the sea just steps away. There's plenty of room for everyone here, with an annexe to grant a little extra privacy to couples. The garden is large enough to entertain children and furry friends, with space for alfresco dining and drinks, and an elevated pond. The area is quiet and residential, perfect for a relaxing coastal break. Kingston and Ferring beaches are minutes away on foot, and the BlueBird Cafe offers a lovely breakfast.

A stunning open-plan living room dominates the first floor and offers access to a spacious balcony with outstanding views over the sprawling seafront. The fact it's south facing makes it an ideal outdoor hangout from the first sip of your morning coffee to the last drop of your sundowner each day.

On the ground floor, two individually decorated bedrooms provide you with relaxing refuges to retreat to at the end of the day, with the main bedroom benefitting from access to an en-suite bathroom. Step out into the palm-fringed garden, equipped with a gorgeous wooden deck, enticing outdoor furniture, a barbecue and a fire pit. The icing on the cake has to be the hot tub, where you're welcome to enjoy long evenings soaking in the warm water as the sun sinks below the horizon.

Worthing itself recently found itself topping The Times holiday hotlist. The newspaper reserved special praise for its vibrant atmosphere, selection of independent shops and plenty of choices when it comes to places to eat and drink. 

Alternatively, pack yourself a picnic and cross over into the South Downs National Park, crisscrossed with walking routes and cycle trails, just a few miles to the north. In contrast, the bustling city of Brighton offers plenty of coastal culture, a little over half an hour's drive along the coast.

Close to the picturesque South Downs National Park, this home is on the ground floor of a cottage, nestled in the far-reaching grounds of the owner's estate. You'll find a lot of artwork and antiques here, so it might not be the best place for small children. You're in for a countryside treat, though – the views are wonderful, walking trails are nearby, and the garden faces west meaning the sunsets are truly awe-inspiring. You'll receive fresh eggs from the owner's chickens upon arrival, and you might be paid a visit by the resident Jack Russell terrier during your stay. For lovers of the outdoors, this home has everything.

Country Nest

Idyllically situated in the beautiful countryside surrounding the historic Arundel – this classic English thatched cottage has fabulous views over the rolling hills of the South Downs, towards Arundel Castle. When it's warm, enjoy an alfresco breakfast of organic jam, bread, yogurt and granola (provided by your lovely hosts) on the terrace as you take in the vistas. Later, relax in the sun on the sun loungers with a glass of wine from the complimentary bottle in the welcome pack. 

If the weather turns chilly, head inside and gather around the gorgeous inglenook fireplace, pour a glass of whiskey and play a game of chess. We love all of the character features in this home – it's the perfect weekend retreat for a family or group of friends, as it's just over an hour away from London.

Situated in the picturesque hamlet of Wepham – this cottage is ideal for bird watchers and walkers – there are plenty of country walks right on your doorstep. Or have a stroll around the pretty village of Burpham with its famous pub, a nine-minute walk away. The historic market town of Arundel and its medieval castle is an eight-minute drive, while Goodwood, with its array of events such as the Festival of Speed and Revival, is ten miles from this beautiful cottage.

This pretty holiday home sits in the centre of Westmeston, a village at the foot of the South Downs. It’s a great spot for walkers as the footpath directly outside leads straight to the Downs, and there are plenty of other local walks to enjoy. Beach-lovers need only drive thirty minutes to reach the south coast. The house itself retains much of its Victorian charm, having been lovingly restored. We love the garden and the cosy wood burner for chillier evenings.

From alfresco barbecues on the vast garden terrace, sundowners on the mezzanine balcony, and relaxing in the hot tub, to large sit-down dinners indoors overlooking the downs, this house is well suited for entertaining. And there’s heaps of space to spill out in the generously sized bedrooms – spread out over two floors and united by a tasteful mix of contemporary and rustic interiors. Lofty high ceilings, polished concrete flooring (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty), and sleek architectural glazing make quite the first impression. While a bespoke shaker kitchen with all the mod-cons (think Everhot range cooker and wine cooler) and beautifully curated objet’s de art bring character and soul. Your hosts have designed the entire apartment with the needs of their guests in mind. The three individually decorated, stylish bedrooms offer luxurious accommodation for up to six people on the first floor. Plus, there's a sofa bed in the studio for an additional two guests. The top floor is more vibrant, with bold colours and eye-catching design, including what we would usually call floor-to-ceiling windows, except these ones take over half of the roof as well. The kitchen is equipped with everything the savvy chef might need to rustle up delicious group dinners. Step onto the streets of the historic market town of Petworth, and you'll find antique shops, cafes and the National Trust Petworth House and Park. Slightly further afield, you're a mere twenty minutes from glorious Goodwood – famous for its historic racetrack and Festival of Speed – and half an hour from the coast at Climping. There are so many events locally that it's well worth a bit of research before you arrive.

Ideally situated close to the heart of Worthing and less than a minute from the coast, this stylish apartment is perfect for a seaside family romp or a reunion of old friends. Step through the front door to be greeted by its open-plan living space, which provides the perfect location to catch up and share anecdotes over a coffee or glass of wine.

Step out onto the balcony upstairs to breathe in the sea air and listen to the gulls fly overhead. This spot is perfect for your morning coffee before you take a short walk to the beach. For lunch, we recommend heading down to Worthing’s historic pier for traditional fish and chips. For the more health-conscious, wander a few minutes inland to one of the town’s trendy cafes or restaurants.
