You’re also just a short drive from the city centre – in case you’re in town for business – and a mere half an hour from the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth. The Yorkshire Dales and its excellent walking trails are a similar distance. This home also has free on-street parking, making it super easy to head out for a day of adventures. Able to accommodate up to five guests, a few friends or a family will be well looked after here. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen is fully equipped and there’s a nice lounge with soft sofas that you can sink into after a busy day.

If you fancy yourself as lord or lady of the manor, then you can live out your dreams for a few days at this Grade II listed Georgian home. The majestic house is set in two and a half acres of private grounds, bursting with flower gardens, apple trees and green lawns that are perfect for picnicking. Pay a visit to the local farm shop to stock up on fresh produce, and cook a delicious meal on the AGA to share alfresco on the terrace as you admire the views of the rolling countryside. After dark, you might decide to stay outside and huddle around the fire pit, or retreat to one of the cosy living rooms to play board games or watch a movie. The Yorkshire Moors are right on your doorstep, ideal for long, muddy walks through the windswept landscapes that inspired the Brontë sisters, and it's just a short drive to visit the Pennines, where you can hike through an official Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

With views across Haworth and beyond, it's a stunning conversion with crisp, modern lines juxtaposing with period features. Inside, it's a warm and comfortable space – and what could be more welcoming than a complimentary bottle of bubbly and some chocolate truffles when you arrive? The living room has a huge, supremely comfortable sofa with a contemporary dining table and an open-plan kitchen with everything you could need for cooking at home. Down the hall, the bedroom is smart and serene, with a plush super-king bed to sink into. Here you'll be just by the river, a five-minute walk from the centre of the village. Jump on a vintage steam train, visit the popular Bronte Parsonage Museum or just head off for a country walk followed by lunch in one of the nearby eateries.

We're pretty sure that you won't find many cottages cuter than this. Built at the backend of the eighteenth century, this traditional weaver's house is Grade-II listed and you can see why. Inside, the wooden ceiling beams, exposed brickwork and stable door are full of rustic charm, while a log-burning fire and antique furnishings add an extra level of cosiness. To the side of the home, there's a patio area complete with alfresco seating where you can enjoy a coffee and the surrounding tranquillity of West Yorkshire. Fans of Last of the Summer Wine — one of the longest-running sitcoms in the world — will love walking around the local town of Holmfirth where it was filmed. The Peak District is only a ten-minute drive away too if you're in the mood for a long ramble.

With its original timber beams, wood-panelled walls and homespun furniture, this Klidwick barn conversion is the perfect place to kick back and relax after long walks through the West Yorkshire countryside. Wake up feeling well-rested in the unfussy bedrooms before sitting down to a full English breakfast in the kitchen-diner. If it’s blowing a gale outside, bundle into the living space and curl up with a hot mug of tea.

Thick with artists, crafters, beekeepers, and people who like to do things a bit differently, HB must be one of the most unique villages in England. That quirky, independent spirit carries through into this cottage, with its eclectic mix of furnishings. Think classical with touches of the Middle East, craft crockery and striking wall art. The tree-filled garden is just the place for a morning chai latte, before browsing Hebden Bridge’s independent boutiques, watching an art-house film at the 1920s Picture House, or making a literary pilgrimage to Sylvia Plath’s grave in the ruined churchyard across the road. If you’d like an outdoorsy interlude from all that arts and culture, the surrounding countryside is prime territory for hiking. Come back to your small but perfectly formed base for an evening of love, laughter and stories around the firepit.

This charming cottage in the quiet village of Long Marston is the perfect base from which to explore nearby York and its surrounding countryside. Inside, the place is bursting with character. Modern renovations cleverly incorporate the building’s original features and an eclectic selection of colour and texture adds extra intrigue throughout. We particularly loved the eye-catching orange sofa and French antique bed in the second bedroom. Begin your mornings with a bite to eat in the light-filled living space or spill out into the garden for breakfast alfresco if the weather is on your side. For those who like to like to get out into nature, a ramble through the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is in order – it’ll take you around an hour to get there by car. Culture buffs should make the twenty-minute drive into historic York for its ancient Minster and medieval Shambles. Finish the afternoon with a well-earned gin and tonic beside the pretty River Ouse.

The decor is exactly what you’d expect of a cosy, rustic cottage – original beams and stonework, and a wood-burning stove in the downstairs living room. While you’ll need to climb some stairs to reach the bedrooms on the upper floor, the zip-and-link beds provide flexibility for families or friends sharing, and the parking permit provided is a welcome addition for those looking to explore further afield by car.

This old stone home offers an escape to the country like no other. Set on acres and acres of private land, the estate here is dedicated to rewilding. Instead of topiaried hedges and regimented flowerbeds you’ll find wildflower meadows, wild moorland and forests alive with wildlife. Here, days can be spent cycling and hiking the woodland trails straight from your doorstep, wild swimming and climbing up to a Bronze Age cairn. There’s a wellness centre on the estate too for some real R&R.

The home itself combines a Scandi-chic vibe with touches of the 19th century. Stone fireplaces and wooden-beamed ceilings sit alongside sleek, modern kitchen cabinets and plush sofas in sitting rooms. Our favourite spot has to be the dedicated playroom, or “kid’s cave” where bunting and hand-written notes cover the walls and there’s a big activity table to keep little hands occupied for hours. The view from the classic old windows is something to savour too – out over rewilded pastures and rolling hills for miles.
