Once the dwelling of the estate's groundskeeper, this Lake District property has been refurbished to become a contemporary countryside getaway.

Inside, the design could definitely be described as minimalist, with walls painted in soothing whites adorned only by a few well-chosen pieces of artwork, a sleek kitchen and a preference for simple wooden furnishings. The wood-burning fireplace situated in an archway between the living room and dining area is sure to keep the whole ground floor warm and toasty.

But what about during those balmy months in which a roaring fire isn't necessary? The alfresco dining table on the terrace is sure to see some use during this time, as is the barbecue. You'll probably want to work up an appetite first, however, and there's an onsite heated swimming pool and an activity centre offering everything from watersports, 4x4 off-road driving, clay pigeon shooting, archery, axe-throwing or bushcraft.

If you're after something a little more sedate, there are plenty of walking routes that start from the site, including one to the cute village of Hawkshead about ninety minutes away on foot.

This charming holiday home is located in the small village of Staveley-in-Cartmel in the Lake District National Park. You can set off on beautiful walks straight from the front door – Windermere is only a five-minute walk away. We think grown-ups will enjoy the elegant kitchen and dining space, as well as the deep bathtub – perfect after a day of hiking. The home is in the quaint village of Newton-in-Cartmel, surrounded by rolling hills and scenic countryside. What more could you hope for? 


Lakeside Charm

Lying within a large estate on the western side of Lake Windermere, this mighty country pile is a superb option for a big party travelling to the Lake District.

Like many properties in the local area, there's a real sense of heritage and time-honoured homeliness in the interior, as seen with the wooden ceiling beams, grand dining room and lavish living area complete with a wood-burning fireplace and walls full of historic artwork.

That being said, it would be unfair to say that the home is stuck in the past. Contemporary features abound if you look closely enough, whether in the sleek bathrooms and equally smart kitchens or in the stylishly appointed bedrooms.

When the weather's playing ball, there's a garden and patio area for making the most of sunny spells, and there's also a communal swimming pool on the estate for which guests can book a slot. If you're feeling hardy, you can swim in Lake Windermere, which can be reached in around five minutes on foot. There's also a company on the estate that can organise watersports, as well as other outdoor excursions.

With an elevated position, this apartment has wonderful views over the golf course and Morecambe Bay. The home is housed in a historic building dating from 1897, so as you'd expect, this home has character features such as double-height vaulted ceilings. We love the mezzanine games room with its pool table, and there's plenty of room to entertain your family and friends. There's a claw-footed bath in the main bedroom's en-suite, too, perfect for a soak after a stroll around the estate's 4 acres of grounds. There's also a shared barbecue area with tables and chairs – ideal for warm summer evenings. Other attractions nearby include the Brown Robin Nature Reserve and the town of Grange-over-Sands.

This detached barn conversion is located in a quiet hamlet and offers panoramic views over the Cumbrian countryside. Outside, there’s a decked area for lunches in the sunshine and an enclosed garden for four-legged friends. Inside, the living area is kept warm with a wood-burning stove. If we had to be picky, we’d say the bathroom could do with a refresh, though it functions fine. The Cambrian Way passes by the front of the home, making the place ideal for walkers. Plus, the bustling market town of Ulverston, which holds a twice-weekly market, is a ten-minute drive away.

From this spot on the western edge of Windermere, you'll be able to enjoy the whole of the Graythwaite Estate – covering 5000 lakeside acres. Spend your days walking the many trails, soaking up the natural landscape, or pop along to the estate's on-site activity centre, where you can book anything from paddleboarding to a 4X4 adventure. And for lunch, head to the nearby villages of Hawkshead, Near Sawrey and Far Sawrey – all bursting with eateries and attractions – or take the ferry across to Bowness. Back at home, relax in the bright and homely living space, with modern grey and white furnishings and a cosy log burner for warming the toes in the chilly winter months. To make the most of the lake views, you'll find the accommodation is upside down, with the bedrooms on the ground floor. Situated at the southern end of Coniston Water, the fifth largest of the lakes, this barn conversion blends contemporary comfort with period details. The farm is believed to date back to the 17th century, and the surrounding landscape hasn't changed much in all that time. Lace up your hiking boots and follow any number of footpaths that pass right by the front door. Lake Bank pier is just ten minutes on foot and is perfect for summer swims, canoe launches and paddle boarding.  Alternatively, head north to Coniston Boating Centre for boat hire and trips on the beautifully restored Victorian steam-powered Gondola.

Keen hikers might want to tackle Scafell Pike, which is less than an hour away, and Lake Windermere can be reached in half an hour. The apartment is a fuss-free base, equipped with everything you need for a comfortable break. There’s a petite desk for those needing to work during their stay.

In a charming spot in a tiny village on the little River Eea, this cosy home is a mix of character features and modern comforts. Overlooking the river, with an unusual layout and plenty of space, it's a great choice for a family but would just as readily suit a group of friends.

Having recently been renovated, there's no chintz here – instead, crisp white walls and wood floors are the order of the day. The living room and dining area have been thoughtfully popped up on the first floor, to take advantage of the views, and the vaulted ceiling has created space for a secret seating spot (the kids will consider this a den).

There's a cute log burner for cosy stays no matter the season and a suntrap rear garden that's perfect for breakfast on summer mornings. Set out on walks from your doorstep, drive to the nearby coast or visit Lake Windermere, just around fifteen miles away. And best of all, there are a couple of pubs to choose from within the village.

Kids and grown ups alike will be in heaven here – on sunny days there’s a plethora of garden games, from giant Connect 4 and a garden chess set, to a pair of swings and a slide. Get everyone involved in a ping pong tournament, shoot goals in the netball hoop, or play a spot of badminton before firing up the two barbecues and enjoying an alfresco lunch on the deck. When it rains, fear not. Retreat to the games room for a round of pool, or curl up with a book in the plush sitting room while the kids play on the PS4. Your hosts pride themselves on their eco credentials – the underfloor heating is through a renewable ground source, and there’s a solar array on the roof providing the electricity.

Grange-over-Sands is a peaceful seaside town with elegant Edwardian architecture. The house is 150 metres from the Main Street, and within easy walking distance of a supermarket, local cafés, and some excellent takeaway restaurants. On sunny days, stroll along the banks of the estuary or walk seven minutes to the Ornamental Gardens for a picnic. The Lakes are easily accessible from the house – the southern end of Lake Windermere is fourteen minutes away by car, where you can practise a variety of watersports. On race days, drive eight minutes to the lively Cartmel Racecourse, and visit one of the top class restaurants in the town afterwards. Or head home and take advantage of the electric pizza oven for a pizza night on the verandah. There’s endless fun to be had here – we just hope you can squeeze it all in!

This warm and inviting home is in the grounds of the old vicarage estate, having originally been the stables. It’s nestled in the heart of the Lake District, between Lake Windermere and Esthwaite. The home boasts beautiful views down the valley towards Sawrey, Grizedale Forest, and the Old Man of Coniston. It’s just a short walk from Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s home, and is surrounded by a wild meadow planted with fruit and nut tree orchards – this is certainly a picturesque spot for a romantic escape. We love the freestanding bathtub and the wood-burning stove of this comfortable, cosy home-from-home.

When you can pull yourself away from the scenery, there’s also a cinema and games room. There’s plenty of space to spread out, including a snug, dining area, and living area. The living space is a little dated, but we think it adds to the traditional charm. Being a Victorian home, expect some low ceilings and uneven floors. The garden is on multiple levels, too, but it’s a great spot for the children to run around. Just keep an eye on them around the woodlands – there are a few fallen trees.
