This home is a superb base for a family wanting to explore the Lake District while staying in style. It’s been lovingly renovated and redecorated, shaped into a calming, welcoming home-from-home. It has the feel of a traditional cosy cottage but all the modern amenities you might want for a stress-free stay. There’s a patio outside and a home cinema, so little ones will be happy. We think grown-ups will enjoy the elegant kitchen and dining space, as well as the deep bathtub – perfect after a day of hiking. This charming holiday home is located in the small village of Staveley-in-Cartmel in the Lake District National Park. You can set off on beautiful walks straight from the front door – Windermere is only a five-minute walk away. The characterful cottage has original features and is equipped with everything you might need for a cosy break in the Lakes. The small front garden boasts wonderful views of the surrounding fields and countryside and is a splendid spot for a post-hike drink.

Once the dwelling of the estate's groundskeeper, this Lake District property has been refurbished to become a contemporary countryside getaway.

Inside, the design could definitely be described as minimalist, with walls painted in soothing whites adorned only by a few well-chosen pieces of artwork, a sleek kitchen and a preference for simple wooden furnishings. The wood-burning fireplace situated in an archway between the living room and dining area is sure to keep the whole ground floor warm and toasty.

But what about during those balmy months in which a roaring fire isn't necessary? The alfresco dining table on the terrace is sure to see some use during this time, as is the barbecue. You'll probably want to work up an appetite first, however, and there's an onsite heated swimming pool and an activity centre offering everything from watersports, 4x4 off-road driving, clay pigeon shooting, archery, axe-throwing or bushcraft.

If you're after something a little more sedate, there are plenty of walking routes that start from the site, including one to the cute village of Hawkshead about ninety minutes away on foot.



The Keeper

Lying within a large estate on the western side of Lake Windermere, this mighty country pile is a superb option for a big party travelling to the Lake District.

Like many properties in the local area, there's a real sense of heritage and time-honoured homeliness in the interior, as seen with the wooden ceiling beams, grand dining room and lavish living area complete with a wood-burning fireplace and walls full of historic artwork.

That being said, it would be unfair to say that the home is stuck in the past. Contemporary features abound if you look closely enough, whether in the sleek bathrooms and equally smart kitchens or in the stylishly appointed bedrooms.

When the weather's playing ball, there's a garden and patio area for making the most of sunny spells, and there's also a communal swimming pool on the estate for which guests can book a slot. If you're feeling hardy, you can swim in Lake Windermere, which can be reached in around five minutes on foot. There's also a company on the estate that can organise watersports, as well as other outdoor excursions.

If we had to be picky, we’d say the bathroom could do with a refresh, though it functions fine. The Cambrian Way passes by the front of the home, making the place ideal for walkers. Plus, the bustling market town of Ulverston, which holds a twice-weekly market, is a ten-minute drive away.

The farm is believed to date back to the 17th century, and the surrounding landscape hasn't changed much in all that time. Lace up your hiking boots and follow any number of footpaths that pass right by the front door. Lake Bank pier is just ten minutes on foot and is perfect for summer swims, canoe launches and paddle boarding.  Alternatively, head north to Coniston Boating Centre for boat hire and trips on the beautifully restored Victorian steam-powered Gondola.

You can’t come to the Lake District without exploring the area – so have a stroll around Bowness-on-Windermere’s streets filled with boutiques, cafes, and pubs. The house is 150 metres from the Main Street, and within easy walking distance of a supermarket, local cafés, and some excellent takeaway restaurants. On sunny days, stroll along the banks of the estuary or walk seven minutes to the Ornamental Gardens for a picnic. The Lakes are easily accessible from the house – the southern end of Lake Windermere is fourteen minutes away by car, where you can practise a variety of watersports. On race days, drive eight minutes to the lively Cartmel Racecourse, and visit one of the top class restaurants in the town afterwards. Or head home and take advantage of the electric pizza oven for a pizza night on the verandah. There’s endless fun to be had here – we just hope you can squeeze it all in!

Hopping over the babbling beck to reach the hidden gardens of this cute-as-a-button period cottage, you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd fallen head first into the pages of a Beatrix Potter classic. And that's all part of the charms of this riverside home, set just a few minutes walk from the pretty centre of Windermere village and a smidge further to bustling Bowness and Lake Windermere (a twenty-minute stroll). 

Inside, the cottage has been carefully and stylishly reimagined for elegant, modern living while retaining that all-important historic character. Spread out over three floors, it's deceptively spacious, too, despite its chocolate-box exterior. Upstairs, you'll find four bedrooms, each as beautiful as the next, with exposed beams, sloping roofs, and decorative fireplaces just like you imagined. While downstairs, you can spill out into the immaculate open-plan living and dining area with storybook armchairs crying out for an afternoon dose. 

But when the sun shines, it's outside in that glorious hidden garden where you'll want to be. Hop over the itsy-bitsy humpback bridge (game of poohsticks, anyone?) to soak up the sun from the sloping lawns or gather round for drinks on the riverside decking – it's your very own little oasis in the heart of Windemere.

This stylish apartment is perfectly placed for exploring the Lake District. It’s in the centre of the village of Coniston, within walking distance of the lake shore. From here, you can hike the Old Man of Coniston, one of the most striking peaks in the Lakes, and explore the Coniston Fells. The apartment is ideal for couples and families, with everything you might need for a cosy break. We love the views from the living room, and the sleek open-plan kitchen and dining space.

Step back in time with a stay in this Victorian manor. Set on a private estate, with surrounding countryside views, it’s the picture of a countryside escape. When you can pull yourself away from the scenery, there’s also a cinema and games room. There’s plenty of space to spread out, including a snug, dining area, and living area. The living space is a little dated, but we think it adds to the traditional charm. Being a Victorian home, expect some low ceilings and uneven floors. The garden is on multiple levels, too, but it’s a great spot for the children to run around. Just keep an eye on them around the woodlands – there are a few fallen trees.

This cosy little cottage, complete with quintessential Aga and woodburner, is located in the centre of the popular market town of Ulverston. You can access the back garden from the first floor to enjoy a barbecue, or light the fireplace when it’s a little chilly and snuggle up in front of your favourite Netflix show. There are plenty of great pubs and restaurants right on your doorstep and for those nature fanatics you are spoilt for choice in the gorgeous Lake District.

It's easy to forget you're in North West England from this stunning home in Bowness-on-Windermere, as its modern mid-century interiors look straight out of '70s Hollywood. Here, you can kick back here in front of the fireplace, after fun-filled days of hiking, cycling or relaxing by the lake. When the weather is kind, take yourself outside on the balcony for some afternoon tea in the sunshine. 

While the Lake District presents a vast array of shops, pubs and restaurants to try out (the nearest pub is just 500 yards away), you won't find bars and clubs open until the early hours. That's why the entertainment features of this home have been carefully selected to ensure guests are having fun around the clock. From the basement spa and games room, you'll find not only a pool table but a private hot tub jacuzzi and an old school home cinema too.

Travelling around the north of England, it’s pretty difficult to avoid national parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Right in between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, Arnside & Silverdale AONB is a lesser-known beauty spot on Morecambe Bay. From this delightful farmhouse, around two miles from Arnside Beach, not only can you explore these striking English scenes in all their glory, but your own home is something of an AONB in its own right. 

Located in thirty-five acres of lush fields, this renovated farmhouse oozes rustic luxury from the offset. Woodlands, streams, ponds, and limestone clint pavements make up this unique landscape, with your glorious stone cottage at the centre of it all. We love the outdoor seating on the verdant lawns, as well as patios and even a garden kitchen with its very own pizza oven. Mediterranean alfresco dining might appear to be on the cards, but the interiors are perfect for a classic Sunday roast.

Step inside the living space to find original timber beams lining the ceilings above the family dining space. The atmosphere is incredibly homely and welcoming, especially when the log-burner is lit up in the inglenook. With a modern country kitchen, you’ve got no excuse when it comes to homemade Yorkshire puddings – the only question is how much gravy you’d like on top.

As you step inside, you're greeted with a homely and warm atmosphere – we love that this home has a log burner for chillier nights. Ascend the spiral staircase, and you'll find two cosy bedrooms, the perfect spot to rest after a long walk. There's plenty to see nearby – Cartmel's charming village square offers a range of dining options, or explore the village’s 12th-century priory. If you want to visit the Lake District, Lake Windermere is just a short drive away.

This classic yet contemporary home is just a few minutes' walk from the centre of Ambleside and perfectly placed to capture a picturesque glimpse of the steeple of St Mary's Church rising above the trees. So sip your morning coffee on the balcony and take a minute to enjoy the charming view. Once you arrive and park the car, we love that there's little reason to move it again as you can find everything you need on your doorstep. However, if you do decide to explore further afield, the home is only a ten-minute drive from the head of Windermere, meaning that exploring the Lake District is as easy as hopping in the car with a picnic.
