This home caught our eye for its Lake Windermere views, best enjoyed from the terrace or one of the three living rooms. Keen chefs will appreciate the AGA and country-style kitchen, active types will love playing tennis on the courts, and the hot tub will suit every member after a day on the lake. The garden is a little steep, so you’ll need to keep an eye on little ones, but it’s a great spot to enjoy alfresco meals. There’s plenty of space here for both adults and kids – the Xbox will be a draw for younger guests. Located just a ten-minute walk from Bowness-On-Windermere, you’re perfectly placed for days on the lake.

The living space is a little dated, but we think it adds to the traditional charm. Being a Victorian home, expect some low ceilings and uneven floors. The garden is on multiple levels, too, but it’s a great spot for the children to run around. Just keep an eye on them around the woodlands – there are a few fallen trees.

So sip your morning coffee on the balcony and take a minute to enjoy the charming view. Once you arrive and park the car, we love that there's little reason to move it again as you can find everything you need on your doorstep. However, if you do decide to explore further afield, the home is only a ten-minute drive from the head of Windermere, meaning that exploring the Lake District is as easy as hopping in the car with a picnic. And when you return from the day's adventures, stroll down to one of the country pubs for dinner and a restorative pint of ale, or simply flop down in that spacious living room.

Set on a riverside estate that was once owned by William Wordsworth’s son, this eco cottage makes for an idyllic break in the Lake District. It’s all about lacing up those hiking boots here with country paths over hills and fells and a riverside walk taking you into Ambleside in twenty minutes. Just beyond the garden, a set of stepping stones take you across the River Rothay and into the land that’s inspired poets for centuries. This charming apartment is located in the heart of Ambleside, the gateway to the Lake District. It boasts stunning views of the surrounding town, mountains, and lakes from every window, and is just a short walk from the shops, restaurants, and pubs. You can set off on delightful walks from the doorstep, and the likes of Lake Windermere and Rydal Water are a short drive away. The apartment won’t suit those seeking a modern, sleek holiday home but we think the slightly dated style adds to the charm.

For a home in a market town this quaint, inside the twin-level apartment feels surprisingly contemporary. Dazzling white from top to toe, with modern textiles adding a pop of colour, this place is anything but twee. Each vast bedroom spread out across the two floors is as pristine as the next and offer up impressive views of the higgledy-piggledy slate rooftops and craggy hilltops beyond. 

But the clincher here has to that vaulted ceiling living space on the second floor. Mighty exposed beams add the wow-factor and large skylights flood the room with natural daylight. With such vast space, it’s no surprise this apartment was historically the former gallery space of the Heaton Cooper family of artists. 

When you’re ready to soak up the gentle hustle and bustle of Ambleside, you won’t have far to go. Take your pick from the many bars, restaurants, and shops, including the beloved local landmark, Zeffirellis, for its lip-smacking pizza and pasta – all just a three-minute stroll away.

Then all that’s left to do is head for the fells for bracing walks around the spell bounding lakes – there are trails just a hop, skip, and a jump away. Or, for a classic Lakeland experience, hop on a boat to cruise Lake Windermere (a short stroll away).

When the weather's playing ball, there's a garden and patio area for making the most of sunny spells, and there's also a communal swimming pool on the estate for which guests can book a slot. There aren’t many places that really embrace the away-from-it-all feel of the deepest darkest Lake District, and this one is housed on an estate once owned by the son of William Wordsworth. Fields fringed by drystone walls and hillsides dotted with sheep are home to walking and cycling trails right from your doorstep. The River Rothay flows right past the garden where fairytale-esque stepping stones connect you to the other side of the bank. Following the riverside walk, you’ll end up in the pretty village of Ambleside in twenty minutes where shops and cafés abound and watersports on Lake Windermere are on offer. The home itself is an eco getaway, housed in a circular stone building designed to blend into the fells behind it. Make the most of countryside views from the terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows. The open living room, kitchen and dining room is flooded with light during the day and the high-spec kitchen is a cook’s dream. Plus, there’s underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove to keep things cosy warm. At sundown, there’s no better place than the furnished patio for a tipple or two as the sky streaks orange and pink.

There are walks and bike rides to discover straight from the doorstep, so you don’t even need a car. The apartment is equipped with everything you might need for a comfortable stay in the Lakes.
