One glaring error will hit you the moment you step inside this beautiful cottage – that you haven't booked for long enough. The interior strikes just the right balance between countryside style and more urban chic. So while you'll find a Shaker-style kitchen, a warming wood burner and the welcoming cottage feel, there are plenty of pop art prints, eye-catching tiles and mid-century-style furniture that lends it a more contemporary flair. Upstairs, the three bedrooms are individually decorated, but all are exceptional and luxurious, with pristine white towels and bathrobes provided. That said, only the master comes with an in-room freestanding tub, which certainly elevates it in our eyes. Set in glorious countryside, sandwiched between the North Pennines AONB and Lake District National Park, this home offers fantastic views from its enclosed garden. Topped off with a steaming hot tub, which has plenty of space for six people, it's a truly fabulous place to relax. There are plenty of walks along the trails and footpaths that crisscross the Cumbrian countryside. Circular routes offer a varying degree of challenge depending on preference. Still, the leisurely twenty-five-minute stroll to the Shepherds Inn in Langwathby is our favourite kind of country walk – one with a pub at the end. Despite the feeling of seclusion, you're only four miles from Penrith, so it's easy enough to stock up on essentials when needed.

Out in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, this cosy cottage sits right between the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines AONB. It’s safe to say there’s no shortage of walking trails over fields and fells, hills and heather-clad dales. It’s a twenty-minute walk (or four-minute drive) to the village of Langwathby with its train station, village shop and handful of pubs and a coffee shop. Further afield, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Penrith, a ten-minute drive away. A classic rose-stone exterior greets you on arrival, but it’s the inside of this home that really impresses. Walls of reclaimed wood, exposed stonework and a vaulted ceiling in the living room are simply stunning. There’s a wood-burner to keep things cosy and each piece of furniture – headboards made from old pallets, a striking faux-bird lampshade and old bronze keys in the doors – feels handpicked. If the glorious free-standing slipper tub in the master bedroom doesn’t invite you for a dip, perhaps the wood-clad hot tub outside can sooth sore feet after a day in the hills. There’s nothing but the bubbles, the lawn, fields and the lake in the distance out here.

At Ullswater Lake, the second biggest in the Lake District, you’ll find a diverse range of landscapes and activities as you hike around its enormous perimeter. From the quaint village of Pooley Bridge, with traditional pubs and cute restaurants, take a fourteen-minute stroll to reach an altogether different scene – an isolated, romantic boathouse. As you arrive, its stone walls and wooden balcony look gloriously rustic. You could even plan to arrive by boat and pull up to the private jetty. From every angle, the surroundings of this home are striking – leafy trees, the glistening lake, and rolling mountains across the water make this setting feel quite special. Inside, the traditional theme continues with chunky beams and vintage furniture. We love the glossy, lacquered wooden pieces in the lounge, as well as the understated chandelier bringing a romantic glow in the evening. Take a look around while you wait for the wood-burning stove to heat up – the bedroom is quite magnificent. A luxurious cushioned headboard, freestanding copper bathtub, and private balcony set over the water are just a few of the fabulous features. Wrap up in your fluffy bathrobes and settle into lakeside living.

Location-wise, it’s just over a mile from Greystoke village and 4 miles from the Lake District, making it an ideal base for exploring Cumbria’s unspoilt Eden Valley. Once the hunting lodge for the Duke of Norfolk, this home in the Cumbrian countryside has a sweeping view of Ullswater and the surrounding fells. To make the most of the vantage point, the open dining and living room is up on the top floor, so you can dine and recline with a sublime view – perfect with the wood-burner crackling away. The covered balcony was made for sunny days and the ground-floor bedrooms have French windows leading to a cobbled patio and lawn. You can walk to the edge of Ullswater, or perhaps explore the winding roads on two wheels – bicycle storage is included.

The Cumbrian Hearth

When a home is surrounded by beautiful scenery, the interior really has to up its game in order to stand a chance of being noticed and thankfully that's the case with this address. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample amounts of natural daylight, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floors. Added to that, we liked the kitchen finished in a fetching shade of purple, the cosy wood-burning stove in the living room and the smart-looking bathrooms. Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.

This cottage couldn't get more idyllic if it tried. Bask in the gorgeous period features, and when you're relaxing after a big meal, open the French doors in the kitchen to let in the tranquil sounds of the River Lyvennet. The dark oak beams, rustic wood-burner and comfy armchairs keep things extra cosy inside, while the spacious patio terrace makes for an ideal spot to wine, dine and relax outside. The cottage is set in the village of King's Meaburn and it's a short walk to the local pub, which serves up hearty roasts and real ales. There's plenty to explore in the backyard - including the river, paths to walking trails, and a lawn that is perfect for games of cricket or croquet. For adventures further afield, this area is rich in history and choice. Lake Windermere is a forty-five-minute drive away, where you can hire a rowing boat and try your best at reciting the Romantic poetry the lake inspired, or potter around one of the many museums. The grand Acorn Bank is not far, with a history revolving around the Knights Templar. For cyclists, routes run all around Eden Valley, with stunning views of villages and countryside. Surrounded by the North Pennines, Lake District, and Yorkshire Dales, this home is perfect for exploring some of the UK's most beautiful national parks.

Some of the Lake District’s most striking scenery can be found at Ullswater, with its mountainous landscape and unusual z-shaped, ‘ribbon lake’, which is the second largest in the region. But even better than simply visiting this beautiful spot, you can see it all from the windows of this lakeside home. Although it’s just a five-minute drive from the quaint town of Pooley Bridge, this home feels truly rural and isolated. Park up the 4x4 in the gravel drive and head into this warm and welcoming abode. Light up the wood-burning stove in the plush lounge, with its horseshoe sofa that can fit the entire family. Or you can even have your own private hideaway in the second sitting room, with yet another fireplace – this time a sleek, modern hearth set into the wall. For balmy English evenings, another space can be found outdoors, with your very own patio complete with comfy garden furniture. Alfresco drinking and dining will certainly be on the cards out here. While you can see the water from the comfort of your own home, it’s just a seven-minute walk down to Ullswater Marina.

This thoughtfully finished, cosy home from home in the small village of Greystoke makes an ideal base from which to explore the Lake District National Park. 

With an effortlessly charming feel, the cottage perfectly combines original characterful features with contemporary styling and modern fixtures and fittings in order to create a uniquely welcoming, homely environment. Whether it's outdoor adventures or low-key countryside relaxation that's top of the agenda, this place provides a fabulous starting point for both.

As you step inside, leaving any muddy shoes in the handy porch, you'll be greeted by authentic wooden beams contrasted against crisp white walls, lending to the traditional feel of the place. Then there's that lovely wood-burning stove in the living area, a fantastic original feature that's perfect for warming up after a long walk in the stunning surrounding countryside. What better excuse to curl up on the sofa in front of the smart TV, or with a good book and cup of tea in hand? You're on holiday, after all.

With jaw-dropping views over Lake Ullswater and a private shoreline and jetty, it's clear what caught our eye about this 1900s gatehouse. There's an alfresco terrace to soak in the lakeside views with barbecues. But should the weather turn, the vistas are just as impressive curled up beside the wood-burning stoves indoors, and the games room will keep little ones busy. Set in the sleepy hamlet of Watermillock, besides two traditional pubs and a watersports centre, little else is within walking distance. However, the village of Pooley Bridge, with a cluster of shops and restaurants, is just a 3-mile drive.

The Lake Gatehouse

This cabin is an excellent choice for a romantic getaway, especially for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy a beautiful natural setting. Located on the picturesque grounds of Blencowe Hall, the home benefits from lovely views over the Lake District Park, which lies just three miles away. Space inside is limited – the cosy living area converts into a bedroom, thanks to a pull-out bed. There’s also a wood-burning stove here, and you can enjoy idyllic alfresco meals and barbecues outside.

Just over a mile from Greystoke, this cabin promises pastoral views and sits on a country estate. Kids can't stay, but baby travel equipment is provided for infants. Though there's a barbecue and fire pit here for your downtime, we think you'll want to partake in the activities available, including pony trekking, cycle tours, and clay pigeon shooting. While there's little space indoors, you'll sleep on a feather pull-out bed and receive a thoughtful welcome hamper. Plus, the Lake District is only 4 miles away.

Once a school, this home has kept many of its charming original features, from the oak floorboards to the arched windows with views over the gardens. Perfect for tranquil family breaks or a group of friends, the house has plenty of warm communal spaces, including a unique dining cubby for intimate dinners and a grand lounge with a toasty log-burning fire. On sunny days, nab a spot in the conservatory, which looks over River Lyvennet, or lounge in the gardens on the patio for al fresco drinks. Set in the small village of Crosby Ravensworth, the space is just a 300-metre stroll to the local pub, The Butchers Arms, which won a Good Food award in 2019. We love the options for walking here, whether that be following the trails from the house and into the Yorkshire Dales, or driving to the nearby North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) or to the Lake District national park. In an hour's drive, you will reach the iconic Lake Windermere – over 10 miles of water, and also the spot which inspired poet William Wordsworth and more recently, a song written by Taylor Swift.

Then take a stroll around the 1.3-mile tarn through the mature woodland. Set in the Lake District, this home has been featured on the TV show Extraordinary Escapes, and we can see why. Situated on the shores of Lake Windermere, it has wonderful views and an acre of garden, as well as several balconies. There’s a terrace for dining and relaxing, as well as a jetty where you can moor a boat or kayak. The interior of this home is impressive too with its designer furniture and ski lodge feel. A home cinema and a games room with a bespoke 8-foot pool table will keep everyone entertained. And all the bedrooms have floor-to-ceiling windows – two also have oval baths overlooking the lake. This place has been designed with total luxury in mind.

A truly stunning rural retreat, this home is sat on a hill overlooking the beautiful South Tyne Valley – just five minutes from Hadrian's Wall. Away from it all, yet within walking distance of the village pub, this place really has to be one of our favourites in this neck of the woods. A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we love the master bedroom's view and its lovely freestanding bath. Here you'll be in prime walking country, with hikes from your doorstep. And it's just a ten-minute drive to the market town of Hexham.

Cloaked in ivy, this home's stone-clad facade charms from the outset. You'll find it situated in an old school house in the heart of Richmond, brimming with character. Adorning a timeless canvas of high ceilings and hardwood, heated floors, exquisitely renovated interiors are equal parts cosy and chic, while huge windows usher in floods of natural light. We especially love the open-plan living space, primed for relaxation with a fully-fitted kitchen, large dining table and cosy lounge. Outside, a patio equipped with furniture and potted plants offers an idyllic spot for sunbathing in the warmer months.

Here, you're perfectly positioned to explore, just shy of a seven-minute walk from Richmond Castle and even closer to the cobbled market square. After a restful slumber in the sumptuous bedrooms – dressed with premium linens and eco-friendly Harrison Spinks mattresses – brew your morning fix with the Smeg coffee machine before slipping out for a stroll. Nestled amongst the east wing of a sprawling estate, this maisonette has plenty of room for families. Cosy and inviting with wooden beams and angled ceilings, this home is sure to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling when you arrive. Snuggle up on the Chesterfield sofas in front of the electric fire while your favourite movie plays on the DVD player. Rustle up delicious meals in the stylish kitchen, then gather around the dining table for family feasts, sharing stories and bottles of bubbly straight out of the wine fridge. All the bedrooms are roomy and traditionally styled, and with private en-suites, nobody will have to queue for the loo. But our favourite spot is the garden. After an alfresco lunch in the courtyard, wander the several acres of grounds and woodlands. The views are absolutely stunning – they stretch towards River Eden and to the Castle Carrock Fells, promising you a slice of that peaceful rural life. Keen cyclists can roam the country lanes by bike or just stroll along the river – viaduct towers, hidden caves and waterfalls are just a few things you'll discover. When your stomach starts rumbling, walk ten minutes into town for local ales and mouth-watering fare at the village pub. Both Carlisle and the Lake District are easily reached by car if you fancy a day out, though we're quite happy to while away our afternoons in Wetheral, exploring the countryside.

An eleven-minute drive to the bustling town of Hexham (or just over thirty minutes to the metropolis of Newcastle), this delightful cottage offers a secluded, rural retreat in the north of England. The setting is postcard-perfect – a white picket fence, traditional iron lamppost, and handmade stone wall surround this cute and cosy home. As you stroll down your paved entrance, you’ll notice your manicured lawn, flowerbed, and dining patio. On a sunny day, it’s the ideal spot for a picnic. Or on a chilly evening, it’s even better for stargazing with a hot toddy in hand. Inside, the living space is a welcoming mix of old and new. The stylish, light-grey kitchen is understated and modern. But we love the traditional countryside features such as flagstone flooring and a sandstone, inglenook fireplace with a wood-burning stove. You feel like you've gone back in time when you’re stoking the flames with the cast-iron tools, and adding fresh logs from the wicker basket. And there’s plenty of history to discover outside the home too – take a thirty-five-minute walk to the 2000-year-old Chesters Roman Fort and Museum on Hadrian’s Wall.

It’s no wonder that this home, in the heart of the Lake District National Park, has been nominated for Cumbria's most stylish two-bedroom retreat. A lot of thought has gone into the design of this home. There’s a Morsø log burner and designer furniture in the Scandinavian-style living room and luxurious beds with Egyptian cotton linen. Sliding doors from the living space lead to a fantastic social outdoor area with seating and dining, as well as a fireplace and barbecue. You can’t come to the Lake District without exploring the area – so have a stroll around Bowness-on-Windermere’s streets filled with boutiques, cafes, and pubs. Or go for a boat trip on Lake Windermere, less than 200 metres away.

Shhh. Can you hear that sound? Us neither. Quietness and tranquility await in this truly extraordinary country cottage in the North Yorkshire dales. The home's glorious traditional features - original stone floors, warm wooden beams, a roaring fireplace - are full of character, but it's the styling of this home that will make you feel at ease from the moment you arrive. In the welcoming living room, the exquisitely-soft turquoise sofa is the perfect place to while away the hours with a book from the well-stocked bookshelf, and Eastern-inspired touches (including Buddha statues) add to the sense of calm. The kitchen, with its white marble countertops and exposed stone walls, is the ideal spot to cook up a rib-sticking meal. The bedrooms are elegant but simply furnished, with mustard yellow blankets and a dried flower wreath creating little moments of joy. But perhaps the real peace here comes from the scenery – this home is in the Yorkshire Dales’ Arkengarthdale, a beautifully remote location where you can hike for miles without seeing another soul. We dare you to find a traditional Yorkshire Dales cottage more charming than this, folks. Tucked away on the edge of a pretty green in the hamlet of Newby and close to the conservation village of Clapham, the setting is idyllic. Mooch along to the café down the road for hearty breakfasts, or a smidge further, into Clapham (four-minute drive or half-an-hour stroll) with its cheese shop (this is Wensleydale territory), delightful independent gift shops, and a traditional pub for real ale and a warm welcome.  

When it’s time to dive into the great outdoors, you’re right beneath Ingleborough, one of the famous Three Peaks. Follow the countless bridle paths just moments away, leading to lakeside nature trails, mature woodlands, spectacular limestone caves, and eventually, the summit of Ingleborough.

When it’s time to come back down to earth, this elegant home with a pedigree going way back to 1620 delivers all the cottage feels with flagged stone floors, exposed beams, and quirky little nooks. Friends sharing will love how spaced out the bedrooms feel, each on their own floor. And though there’s no enclosed garden to speak of, the lawned sitting-out area at the front of the home is perfect for evening summer drinks as you watch the lambs and ducks waddle by across the green. Following the riverside walk, you’ll end up in the pretty village of Ambleside in twenty minutes where shops and cafés abound and watersports on Lake Windermere are on offer. The home itself is an eco getaway, housed in a circular stone building designed to blend into the fells behind it. Make the most of countryside views from the terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows. The open living room, kitchen and dining room is flooded with light during the day and the high-spec kitchen is a cook’s dream.
