Just over a mile from Greystoke, this cabin promises pastoral views and sits on a country estate. Kids can't stay, but baby travel equipment is provided for infants. Though there's a barbecue and fire pit here for your downtime, we think you'll want to partake in the activities available, including pony trekking, cycle tours, and clay pigeon shooting. While there's little space indoors, you'll sleep on a feather pull-out bed and receive a thoughtful welcome hamper. Plus, the Lake District is only 4 miles away.

The Lakeside Lodge

Once the hunting lodge for the Duke of Norfolk, this home in the Cumbrian countryside has a sweeping view of Ullswater and the surrounding fells. To make the most of the vantage point, the open dining and living room is up on the top floor, so you can dine and recline with a sublime view – perfect with the wood-burner crackling away. The covered balcony was made for sunny days and the ground-floor bedrooms have French windows leading to a cobbled patio and lawn. You can walk to the edge of Ullswater, or perhaps explore the winding roads on two wheels – bicycle storage is included.

The Cumbrian Hearth

This Casterton cottage has lived many lives in its rich history, most notably as the school Charlotte Brontë and her sisters attended in the 1800s. To stay here is to stay in literary history. Recently renovated, the cottage has a new life as a home where high ceilings meets joyous splashes of colour and comfortable furnishings. All the home comforts are here, and the cottage is hugged by a charming little village. A five-minute drive away lies the historic market town of Kirkby Lonsdale, where you're sure to pick up charming souvenirs and fresh local produce. Further afield, take to the water at Lake Windermere, a half-hour drive from your front door. 

Brontë Schoolhouse

Shhh. Can you hear that sound? Us neither. Quietness and tranquility await in this truly extraordinary country cottage in the North Yorkshire dales. The home's glorious traditional features - original stone floors, warm wooden beams, a roaring fireplace - are full of character, but it's the styling of this home that will make you feel at ease from the moment you arrive. In the welcoming living room, the exquisitely-soft turquoise sofa is the perfect place to while away the hours with a book from the well-stocked bookshelf, and Eastern-inspired touches (including Buddha statues) add to the sense of calm. The kitchen, with its white marble countertops and exposed stone walls, is the ideal spot to cook up a rib-sticking meal. The bedrooms are elegant but simply furnished, with mustard yellow blankets and a dried flower wreath creating little moments of joy. But perhaps the real peace here comes from the scenery – this home is in the Yorkshire Dales’ Arkengarthdale, a beautifully remote location where you can hike for miles without seeing another soul. Bliss.

The Riverside Cottage

This classic yet contemporary home is just a few minutes' walk from the centre of Ambleside and perfectly placed to capture a picturesque glimpse of the steeple of St Mary's Church rising above the trees. So sip your morning coffee on the balcony and take a minute to enjoy the charming view. Once you arrive and park the car, we love that there's little reason to move it again as you can find everything you need on your doorstep. However, if you do decide to explore further afield, the home is only a ten-minute drive from the head of Windermere, meaning that exploring the Lake District is as easy as hopping in the car with a picnic. And when you return from the day's adventures, stroll down to one of the country pubs for dinner and a restorative pint of ale, or simply flop down in that spacious living room. 

And Here Is The Steeple

In a part of the UK with such stunning scenery, it really pays to have a home with some outdoor space here. Luckily, from this apartment's balcony, you get beautiful views of Lake Windermere and the hills surrounding the waters.

If it's ever too cold to use this space, you can head back inside and sit by the bay window, from which you get a similarly swoon-worthy panorama. Once you can tear your eyes away, you'll probably notice that the interior looks pretty modern — that's because it underwent a complete refurbishment in late 2021. The large kitchen and its collection of top-of-the-range appliances are particularly impressive, as are the pristine bathrooms.

When you're in the mood to see what the Lake District has to offer, you're in an excellent position to do so. Stock Ghyll Force waterfall is half an hour's walk away, while Rydal Cave can be reached in under ten minutes' drive. The nearby town of Ambleside has a cinema, cafes and even a Roman fort to explore, too.

Kendal Mint Cake

Check in to this waterfront cottage in the Lake District, where heritage, design, and uninterrupted views of Talkin Tarn and the Carrock Fells blend seamlessly. Though set deep in the Cumbria countryside, there's nothing twee about the inside of this home. Accents of racing green and antiqued brass bring flow and a dash of luxury throughout the space and guide you upstairs to an exquisite bedroom with a gleaming slipper bath at its heart. Part of an exclusive estate set within 1.5 acres of grounds, you could feel a million miles from anywhere here. But you're not as remote as you may think. The footpath from your door leads to the charming village of Talkin. Grab a shift pint and hearty meal in the village inn, or mosey down to The Boathouse Cafe for lunch al fresco overlooking the tarn. When it's time to embrace the great outdoors, hire a rowing boat, paddleboard, or kayak to launch off the tarn. Tee off from the local golf course - it overlooks the cottages. Then take a stroll around the 1.3-mile tarn through the mature woodland. Or, you could stay tucked up at home and soak up those views from the private patio or beside the fire – it's a scene you'll never tire of.

Look of Luxe

This cabin is an excellent choice for a romantic getaway, especially for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy a beautiful natural setting. Located on the picturesque grounds of Blencowe Hall, the home benefits from lovely views over the Lake District Park, which lies just three miles away. Space inside is limited – the cosy living area converts into a bedroom, thanks to a pull-out bed. There’s also a wood-burning stove here, and you can enjoy idyllic alfresco meals and barbecues outside.  


 

Forest Affection

There aren’t many places that really embrace the away-from-it-all feel of the deepest darkest Lake District, and this one is housed on an estate once owned by the son of William Wordsworth. Fields fringed by drystone walls and hillsides dotted with sheep are home to walking and cycling trails right from your doorstep. The River Rothay flows right past the garden where fairytale-esque stepping stones connect you to the other side of the bank. Following the riverside walk, you’ll end up in the pretty village of Ambleside in twenty minutes where shops and cafés abound and watersports on Lake Windermere are on offer. The home itself is an eco getaway, housed in a circular stone building designed to blend into the fells behind it. Make the most of countryside views from the terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows. The open living room, kitchen and dining room is flooded with light during the day and the high-spec kitchen is a cook’s dream. Plus, there’s underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove to keep things cosy warm. At sundown, there’s no better place than the furnished patio for a tipple or two as the sky streaks orange and pink.

You can’t come to the Lake District without exploring the area – so have a stroll around Bowness-on-Windermere’s streets filled with boutiques, cafes, and pubs. Or go for a boat trip on Lake Windermere, less than 200 metres away.
