For a home in a market town this quaint, inside the twin-level apartment feels surprisingly contemporary. Each vast bedroom spread out across the two floors is as pristine as the next and offer up impressive views of the higgledy-piggledy slate rooftops and craggy hilltops beyond.

We love the colour palette, which blends soft blues with sunshine yellow. The kitchen tiles light up the open-plan living space and create the perfect cooking space. You can make the most of the Neff appliances by whipping up an evening feast. This home is located above a chocolate shop so expect to get the occasional whiff of sweetness (and constant cravings!). Luckily the host provides complimentary chocolates for you to pocket as you head into the Lake District for a day of hiking.

We love the log burner, which you can curl up beside after spending the day exploring the Great Outdoors – you can set off on excellent hikes right from the front door. In a part of the UK with such stunning scenery, it really pays to have a home with some outdoor space here. Luckily, from this apartment's balcony, you get beautiful views of Lake Windermere and the hills surrounding the waters.

If it's ever too cold to use this space, you can head back inside and sit by the bay window, from which you get a similarly swoon-worthy panorama. Once you can tear your eyes away, you'll probably notice that the interior looks pretty modern — that's because it underwent a complete refurbishment in late 2021. The large kitchen and its collection of top-of-the-range appliances are particularly impressive, as are the pristine bathrooms.

When you're in the mood to see what the Lake District has to offer, you're in an excellent position to do so. Stock Ghyll Force waterfall is half an hour's walk away, while Rydal Cave can be reached in under ten minutes' drive. The nearby town of Ambleside has a cinema, cafes and even a Roman fort to explore, too.

Choose a book from the cute nook and relax on the comfy sofa. This place is the perfect Cumbrian retreat for a family or friends.

The village of Grasmere is just over one mile away, where you’ll find Dove Cottage, the National Trust's Allan Bank and other attractions to enjoy. Practical amenities in Grasmere include a local shop, pharmacy, post office and a choice of eateries and pubs

Mornings here are particularly lovely. Your plush bed will be hard to get out of, but the views of Lake Windermere peeking in through the curtains will be sure to encourage you up. The little ones will also love the two parks with play areas that are just a few yards away. There’s even a path outside the rear gate leading straight to one of them. While this is convenient, bear in mind that this is a communal path and there’ll be people walking past the back gate throughout the day. But while you’re inside the cottage, you’ll be able to switch off from the outside world – there's a fireplace for ultimate cosiness, as well as plush sitting areas. The views across the stone brick village are the cherry on top.

From here, you can easily explore the Lakeland Fells and take in the beauty of the Lakes. There’s a petite patio at the front of the home, where you can sip your morning cuppa as you plan your day.
