Set on the second and third floors of a modern apartment building, while there’s no garden to speak of, the snug balcony with river views is a lovely touch. An excellent option for families looking to explore the Lake District, take your pick from the countless walking and cycling routes nearby. Situated at the southern end of Coniston Water, the fifth largest of the lakes, this barn conversion blends contemporary comfort with period details. The farm is believed to date back to the 17th century, and the surrounding landscape hasn't changed much in all that time. Lace up your hiking boots and follow any number of footpaths that pass right by the front door. Lake Bank pier is just ten minutes on foot and is perfect for summer swims, canoe launches and paddle boarding.  Alternatively, head north to Coniston Boating Centre for boat hire and trips on the beautifully restored Victorian steam-powered Gondola.

If we had to be picky, we’d say the bathroom could do with a refresh, though it functions fine. The Cambrian Way passes by the front of the home, making the place ideal for walkers. Plus, the bustling market town of Ulverston, which holds a twice-weekly market, is a ten-minute drive away.

This charming home is a splendid base for exploring the Lake District National Park. It’s tucked away in a peaceful valley so you can really unwind, but it’s just a twelve-minute drive from Kendal and fifteen minutes from Windermere. When you’re not out enjoying the Great Outdoors, you’ll be able to admire views of the surrounding countryside from the patio, or get cosy beside the log burner. The vaulted ceilings make the home feel roomy and welcoming, whether you’re visiting for a romantic break or as a small family.

Hopping over the babbling beck to reach the hidden gardens of this cute-as-a-button period cottage, you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd fallen head first into the pages of a Beatrix Potter classic. And that's all part of the charms of this riverside home, set just a few minutes walk from the pretty centre of Windermere village and a smidge further to bustling Bowness and Lake Windermere (a twenty-minute stroll). 

Inside, the cottage has been carefully and stylishly reimagined for elegant, modern living while retaining that all-important historic character. Spread out over three floors, it's deceptively spacious, too, despite its chocolate-box exterior. Upstairs, you'll find four bedrooms, each as beautiful as the next, with exposed beams, sloping roofs, and decorative fireplaces just like you imagined. While downstairs, you can spill out into the immaculate open-plan living and dining area with storybook armchairs crying out for an afternoon dose. 

But when the sun shines, it's outside in that glorious hidden garden where you'll want to be. Hop over the itsy-bitsy humpback bridge (game of poohsticks, anyone?) to soak up the sun from the sloping lawns or gather round for drinks on the riverside decking – it's your very own little oasis in the heart of Windemere.

Step back in time with a stay in this Victorian manor. Set on a private estate, with surrounding countryside views, it’s the picture of a countryside escape. When you can pull yourself away from the scenery, there’s also a cinema and games room. There’s plenty of space to spread out, including a snug, dining area, and living area. The living space is a little dated, but we think it adds to the traditional charm. Being a Victorian home, expect some low ceilings and uneven floors. The garden is on multiple levels, too, but it’s a great spot for the children to run around. Just keep an eye on them around the woodlands – there are a few fallen trees.

The house is 150 metres from the Main Street, and within easy walking distance of a supermarket, local cafés, and some excellent takeaway restaurants. On sunny days, stroll along the banks of the estuary or walk seven minutes to the Ornamental Gardens for a picnic. The Lakes are easily accessible from the house – the southern end of Lake Windermere is fourteen minutes away by car, where you can practise a variety of watersports. On race days, drive eight minutes to the lively Cartmel Racecourse, and visit one of the top class restaurants in the town afterwards. Or head home and take advantage of the electric pizza oven for a pizza night on the verandah. There’s endless fun to be had here – we just hope you can squeeze it all in!

Here, you can kick back here in front of the fireplace, after fun-filled days of hiking, cycling or relaxing by the lake. When the weather is kind, take yourself outside on the balcony for some afternoon tea in the sunshine. 

While the Lake District presents a vast array of shops, pubs and restaurants to try out (the nearest pub is just 500 yards away), you won't find bars and clubs open until the early hours. That's why the entertainment features of this home have been carefully selected to ensure guests are having fun around the clock. From the basement spa and games room, you'll find not only a pool table but a private hot tub jacuzzi and an old school home cinema too.

In a charming spot in a tiny village on the little River Eea, this cosy home is a mix of character features and modern comforts. Overlooking the river, with an unusual layout and plenty of space, it's a great choice for a family but would just as readily suit a group of friends.

Having recently been renovated, there's no chintz here – instead, crisp white walls and wood floors are the order of the day. The living room and dining area have been thoughtfully popped up on the first floor, to take advantage of the views, and the vaulted ceiling has created space for a secret seating spot (the kids will consider this a den).

There's a cute log burner for cosy stays no matter the season and a suntrap rear garden that's perfect for breakfast on summer mornings. Set out on walks from your doorstep, drive to the nearby coast or visit Lake Windermere, just around fifteen miles away. And best of all, there are a couple of pubs to choose from within the village.

From here, you can hike the Old Man of Coniston, one of the most striking peaks in the Lakes, and explore the Coniston Fells. The apartment is ideal for couples and families, with everything you might need for a cosy break. We love the views from the living room, and the sleek open-plan kitchen and dining space.

Travelling around the north of England, it’s pretty difficult to avoid national parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Right in between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, Arnside & Silverdale AONB is a lesser-known beauty spot on Morecambe Bay. From this delightful farmhouse, around two miles from Arnside Beach, not only can you explore these striking English scenes in all their glory, but your own home is something of an AONB in its own right. 

Located in thirty-five acres of lush fields, this renovated farmhouse oozes rustic luxury from the offset. Woodlands, streams, ponds, and limestone clint pavements make up this unique landscape, with your glorious stone cottage at the centre of it all. We love the outdoor seating on the verdant lawns, as well as patios and even a garden kitchen with its very own pizza oven. Mediterranean alfresco dining might appear to be on the cards, but the interiors are perfect for a classic Sunday roast.

Step inside the living space to find original timber beams lining the ceilings above the family dining space. The atmosphere is incredibly homely and welcoming, especially when the log-burner is lit up in the inglenook. With a modern country kitchen, you’ve got no excuse when it comes to homemade Yorkshire puddings – the only question is how much gravy you’d like on top.

The Lake District is one of England’s most cherished holiday spots, and it’s very easy to understand why. Striking scenes of huge bodies of water, rugged mountain peaks, and lush greenery as far as the eye can see – especially at its most famous lake, Windermere. Your cottage-like home is just a mile from the town centre of the same name. And with the banks of the lake an easy hike from here, you’ll need somewhere to hang up your boots.

Set on acres of private pasture and thick woods, this Cumbrian estate plays host to several holiday homes. But your apartment is in a lodge-like building set away from the main building. White walls, rustic wooden doors, and a slate roof certainly sound traditional on paper, but the interiors beg to differ.

Your beautifully elongated living space takes you from a white, glossy kitchen, to the velvet quilted chairs of the dining area, and all the way to the Scandi minimalism of the lounge. This bright, open-plan space is wonderful for entertaining, especially as you’ve got the modern bi-fold doors leading right out to your private patio. Take a bottle of champers with you as you head out to light up the fire pit and get the barbecue going. And when you’re ready, hop into your very own hot tub – who needs a lake after all?

This classic yet contemporary home is just a few minutes' walk from the centre of Ambleside and perfectly placed to capture a picturesque glimpse of the steeple of St Mary's Church rising above the trees. So sip your morning coffee on the balcony and take a minute to enjoy the charming view. Once you arrive and park the car, we love that there's little reason to move it again as you can find everything you need on your doorstep. However, if you do decide to explore further afield, the home is only a ten-minute drive from the head of Windermere, meaning that exploring the Lake District is as easy as hopping in the car with a picnic.
