Now that's what we call a view. Looking directly onto the west front of York Minster, this apartment has one of the best outlooks in the city – and it's entirely yours to enjoy. View aside (if that's even possible), the rest of the apartment is a bright and charming place to relax. The simple pared-back style means that the scenery is front and centre, but sleek extras like the rainfall showers, Bluetooth speakers and a Nespresso machine are icing on the cake. It's comfortable and has plenty of space to hang out when you're not exploring. Speaking of, you're truly in the centre of York here. Not only is York Minster so close you can almost touch it, but the other historic areas are also a short stroll away. Shop for fresh produce, quirky crafts and vintage clothes in Shambles Market – a six-minute walk away – or grab a pint and some tasty pub grub at the local taverns. Restaurants, cafes, museums – you name it, you can walk to it, so there's no doubt that this apartment is perfectly placed for adventures.

How Great Thou Art

With the greenery of Knavesmire just around the corner and the medieval city of York just moments away, this Grade II listed home is a perfect base for those seeking a cultural retreat. The Victorian townhouse features and Scandi minimalist designs will appeal to those looking for a laid-back stay – the large bay windows, Wegner Wishbone Chairs and family-style table are the perfect ingredients for memorable dinners. There’s plenty to discover in this vibrant festival city with its Roman roots and Viking past, and since this home sits just outside the centre, you can unwind away from the bustling heart.

Victorian Minimalism

With its flagstone-style flooring, leafy courtyard and traditional fireplace taking pride of place in the living room, there's a rustic feel to this recently renovated address, but a quick glance at the map will show you that you're in the centre of York. The large range cooker in the kitchen will make whipping up home-cooked meals a breeze and you have the choice of dining indoors or alfresco. Upstairs, the bathtub awaits after a long day of exploring this endlessly fascinating city, which you're in an excellent location to do so. Museum Gardens are a twelve-minute walk along the River Ouse if you're into your plants, while the JORVIK Viking Centre — just over five minutes away on foot — is sure to keep history buffs busy for an afternoon.

Eric Bloodaxe

Affectionally known as Bishy Road to locals, Bishopthorpe Road is home to an award-winning collection of independent shops and is the frequent venue for street parties. It's a great place to stay near if you want to see a more authentic side of York and as luck would have it, this house sits on a side street just off the famous thoroughfare. We can't really find anything to fault with the interior — the long, open living space on the ground floor is bright and welcoming thanks to a big bay window on one side and glass doors on the other. Go through these and you'll be greeted by a courtyard with seating for alfresco feasts in the summer months. For want of a better word, it's all very homely, which is exactly what you want when visiting a new city. If you fancy a jaunt into the historic centre, you can be on the other side of the River Ouse in under ten minutes on foot.

Mitre & Crosier

If you're looking for a unique place to stay in the city of York, look no further. This former malthouse has been converted into a fantastic holiday home, with plenty of character that will please even the most discerning of guests. 

The Grade-II listed building dates back to the 19th century, and you can admire the traditional equipment still on show today. However, there is plenty of modern charm here too – you'll love the comfy sofa and bright green kitchen where you can cook up your favourite dishes. After a delicious meal at the stylish dining bench, you can head downstairs to the games room for some fun. Challenge your guests to a round of pool, or simply chill out on the beanbags as you plan your itinerary for the following day. 

Walk across the River Ouse, and you'll arrive in the vibrant heart of York. The Shambles is a twelve-minute stroll away from your front door, where you can browse the quirky boutiques lining the cobbled streets. Make sure you pay a visit to the impressive York Minster too and take a stroll through Museum Gardens, before sipping a pint of local ale at one of the city's quaint pubs. 

Barley Malt

Set beside the River Ouse, this trendy apartment guarantees a relaxing stay in the heart of historic York. We loved spending downtime in the living space, we were particularly fond of the licks of moody blue paint and antique trunks and chests. Cleverly placed mirrors open up the room, while deep, tufted sofas add a touch of cosiness. In the kitchen, you’ll find all you’ll need for putting together your favourite meals. After a hearty lunch at the bistro set, people-watch by the waterfront or follow the river into the city for cream tea in the medieval Shambles and a history lesson at the JORVIK Viking Centre, just a six-minute walk away. When it’s time to call it a day, head home to your comfy double bed and wind down with your favourite show on the nifty pop-up TV.

Yorkshire Blue

This home offers a cosy city sanctuary just outside of York’s historic centre. Located in the quiet neighbourhood of Bootham, this is a great spot for families and groups in search of a home away from home. The rooms are set across three floors so there’s plenty of space to socialise and unwind. All of the bedrooms come with en-suite bathrooms for extra privacy and there’s a little yard for warm weather drinks. Parking is available so you can leave the car at home and walk to local restaurants, cafes and shops as well as iconic sights like York Minster and Shambles Market.

Shine Forever

Just steps away from Bishopthorpe Road (named high street of the year), this charming cottage has award-winning independent shops, cafés and delis all on its doorstep. Right by the ancient walls of York, eight minutes (on foot) from the historical centre of the city, and a twenty-one-minute stroll from the York Minster, this home is perfectly located.

On arrival, little personal touches like a House of York Craft Savvy Card (for discounts at local shops, cafés and bars), homemade cakes and bits and pieces to make a cup of tea are a welcomed sight. The tiled fireplace is the focal point of the open-plan kitchen, living and dining room. Plush leather sofas and a curated selection of holiday books create the perfect spot to unwind in the evening along with streaming options and a library of DVDs. Country-cottage style dining table and chairs add to that feeling of bucolic charm, though you’re in the heart of the city. Up in the bedrooms, wrought iron bed frames and stylish floral furnishings on the comfy beds continue the cosy cottage vibe. If the weather is fine, head out to the small but private courtyard and enjoy a drink on the bistro table and chairs – It's a glorious way to bookmark the day. 

CIX Nunnery Lane

Housed in period conversion just a six-minute walk from the famous York Minster, this apartment isn’t the flashiest in our collection, but its location makes it perfect for sightseeing endeavours. The decor is a little sparse and modest for our liking. That said, the kitchen is a good size and the main bedroom’s walk-in closet equipped with a vanity is a nice touch. Free on-site parking will come in handy for those looking to explore further afield, but with countless historic sights within easy walking distance, we think the best way to explore the city is on foot.

York Rover

From its enchanting vine-covered brick exterior to its sunny front garden space – ideal for morning coffees and sunset glasses of wine – this home is a vision of country chic yet just minutes away from York’s most famous sights. 
Inside, the living room is a bright and welcoming space with its wood floors, vaulted ceilings and wood-burning fire, while the sleek, modern kitchen is ready to host cosy dinners when you’re not out sampling the city’s food scene.
The two bedrooms, meanwhile, have been carefully curated with style and comfort in mind, and you’re sure to get a peaceful night’s sleep thanks to their courtyard facing position. 
While you could spend all day tucked inside your beautiful cottage, go out and explore your surroundings. You’re just a five-minute walk from the York City Walls, an eight-minute stroll from York Minster, while the Shambles – one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval shopping streets – is ten minutes away on foot. 


Moat & Gate

This luxurious apartment, close to the city's historic centre, has everything you could need for a romantic weekend getaway. It's beautifully furnished, with warm grey tones throughout and bright pops of colour, courtesy of the blue velvet sofa and chair. The vast leather-covered corner seat by the dining table is a standout feature, as are the skylights, which ensure plenty of natural light illuminates this loft-style living space. A high table and stool have been thoughtfully placed by the window so that you can enjoy wonderful views across the Minster Gardens with an afternoon cup of tea. The cosy bedroom has plenty of storage for unpacking your belongings, plus a dreamy king-size bed and a lovely dressing area – perfect for getting ready for a night on the tiles. And when you're not experiencing the best of York's eclectic nightlife, you're less than a five-minute stroll from the iconic York Minster and half a mile from the city walls.

Destination York

This charming townhouse is just off Bishopthorpe “Bishy” Road. Hit the shops, restaurants and pubs of Bishy Road or make the ten-minute stroll along the River Ouse into the meandering medieval heart of York. It’s a typical red-brick terrace house with period features like original fireplaces and a claw-footed tub on display inside. The kitchen is farmhouse-style, perfect for rustling up family meals and the rustic dining table continues the provincial feel. Those bringing four-legged friends will find the little enclosed backyard a real bonus.
