Located right by the magnificent York Minster, this 18th-century townhouse enjoys a quiet yet central location. Families and friends alike will settle right in here and pets are welcome to join you, but thanks to its many stairs, low windows and trip hazards, young children will need supervision at all times. There is space to sit out with a drink or an alfresco meal in the small courtyard garden – this is overlooked by surrounding buildings and may not feel fully private. Self-check-in makes arrival easy and convenient, though the nearest parking spot is a short walk away. We think the best way to explore the area is on foot though, so having a car here isn't a necessity.

This apartment has an ace up its sleeve — a huge wraparound balcony that has a superb view of the most famous building in the city, York Minster. There's space to sit out here with this wonderful backdrop, but don't worry if it's too cold, as the floor-to-ceiling windows running around the length of the living space ensures that it's possible to take it in while sitting indoors. 

The interior takes the best parts of 1970s design — the earthy colour palette, patterned wallpaper and natural materials — to create a space that's retro without feeling dated. For the cherry on the cake, the kitchen has plenty of surface space for cooking up a storm and a bathtub upstairs will help you relax after a long day of sightseeing, which is welcomingly easy to do from the central location. Five minutes' walk will get to Museum Gardens, while the same amount of time in the opposite direction will see you reach the medieval shopping street, York Shambles.

These medieval boundaries take eight minutes to reach on foot and many of the city's most famous sights lie just beyond that — York Minster is a twenty-minute walk door-to-door. After a day of exploring the city, you will have worked up a mighty appetite, which deserves to be satiated by the fabulous array of restaurants, cafes and bars that surround the home.

Affectionally known as Bishy Road to locals, Bishopthorpe Road is home to an award-winning collection of independent shops and is the frequent venue for street parties. It's a great place to stay near if you want to see a more authentic side of York and as luck would have it, this house sits on a side street just off the famous thoroughfare. We can't really find anything to fault with the interior — the long, open living space on the ground floor is bright and welcoming thanks to a big bay window on one side and glass doors on the other. Go through these and you'll be greeted by a courtyard with seating for alfresco feasts in the summer months. For want of a better word, it's all very homely, which is exactly what you want when visiting a new city. If you fancy a jaunt into the historic centre, you can be on the other side of the River Ouse in under ten minutes on foot.

Now that's what we call a view. Looking directly onto the west front of York Minster, this apartment has one of the best outlooks in the city – and it's entirely yours to enjoy. View aside (if that's even possible), the rest of the apartment is a bright and charming place to relax. The simple pared-back style means that the scenery is front and centre, but sleek extras like the rainfall showers, Bluetooth speakers and a Nespresso machine are icing on the cake. It's comfortable and has plenty of space to hang out when you're not exploring. Speaking of, you're truly in the centre of York here. Not only is York Minster so close you can almost touch it, but the other historic areas are also a short stroll away. Shop for fresh produce, quirky crafts and vintage clothes in Shambles Market – a six-minute walk away – or grab a pint and some tasty pub grub at the local taverns. A recently converted landmark building within two minutes' walk of York Minster, the period exterior of this place doesn't give away the sleek, modern apartment inside. Offering all the comforts of home, you'll feel like a local in no time. With everything so new it's practically sparkling, you'll have a sociable, open-plan living space with a comfy sofa and a smart dining table, along with a high-spec contemporary kitchen area with all the kit you'll need to cook at home. Both bedrooms are stylish and each has a dedicated bathroom so there won't be any need to queue for the shower in the morning. Little luxuries include welcome treats, underfloor heating in the bathrooms and a funky remote control backlight behind the TV – to set the mood for the evening. The location couldn't be better either, with a walk of fewer than ten minutes into the city centre.

Set in the city centre, just a minutes’ walk from The Shambles, this charming apartment resides in a historic building – the birthplace of Joseph Rowntree. Adorned with artefacts and old photographs, you’ll get a real sense of its history all while being central to the sights of the town. Wake up and enjoy coffee at the circular marble table alongside a hearty breakfast. When you return back at the end of the day, the living room has a deep grey sofa and a velvet blue chair to settle in as you unwind in front of the TV. There’s a pretty tiled kitchen for self-catered meals to enjoy at home. Afterwards, take a relaxing soak in the clawfoot tub and fall asleep in the navy bedroom, ready to wake up to beautiful views of the nearby gothic tower.

When hunger strikes, the kitchenette is well-equipped for knocking up your favourite dishes – though if you’d prefer to hang up your chef’s hat, you’re no more than a ten-minute walk from a clamour of restaurants. Start your York adventure at the famous cathedral, just four minutes from your doorstep. From here, take the seven-minute saunter to the Shambles where crooked and characterful alleyways lay claim to a number of quirky independent shops and cafes. This stunning York townhouse with a basement cinema and games room is located immediately off Bishy Road (voted Britain’s Best High street). The house sits right by the ancient walls and it's just an eight-minute walk to the city centre. 

Arriving at the house, you’re greeted with a freshly-baked cake and all the essentials for a cuppa. You can then snuggle up on one of the sofas in front of the wood-burning stove, or if it’s sunny sit out on the bistro seating in the private south-facing courtyard. In the bedroom, it's all about the finer details with an Egyptian cotton towel for each guest, pocket sprung mattresses, and original fireplaces adding a touch of Georgian charm. 

The basement was once a pub cellar and has been transformed into a private, cosy cinema room and small games room with foosball. It is the ideal spot to wind down in the evening along with Netflix and a library of books.

Set beside the River Ouse, this trendy apartment guarantees a relaxing stay in the heart of historic York. We loved spending downtime in the living space, we were particularly fond of the licks of moody blue paint and antique trunks and chests. Cleverly placed mirrors open up the room, while deep, tufted sofas add a touch of cosiness. In the kitchen, you’ll find all you’ll need for putting together your favourite meals. After a hearty lunch at the bistro set, people-watch by the waterfront or follow the river into the city for cream tea in the medieval Shambles and a history lesson at the JORVIK Viking Centre, just a six-minute walk away. When it’s time to call it a day, head home to your comfy double bed and wind down with your favourite show on the nifty pop-up TV.

From the beautiful engineered oak flooring to the contemporary-chic furnishings and luxe details (like 500 thread count bedding, a 65-inch TV with 180+ digital channels and Neff and Bosch appliances), this home has been lovingly curated to give you a stylish, comfortable stay. 

Pour yourself a welcome gin and tonic and make yourself comfortable on the living room’s plush sofas as you look out onto views of nearby York Minster. These privileged views are enjoyed from every room in the apartment – not least of all the stunning bedrooms. With two sleek porcelain-tiled showers – one of which is an en-suite – offering rainfall showers and heated mirrors, you’ve got everything you need to experience the city in sumptuous fashion. 

When it comes to exploring, you couldn’t be better placed either. Explore the historic Shambles (a three-minute walk), stroll along the York City Walls (a five-minute walk), and visit York Minster up close, just seven minutes away on foot. With plenty of restaurants, bars and cafés nearby too, there’s no end to the enjoyment in store.

There's a timeless quality to this home, just a short walk from the city centre. Part of a period terrace, it's as pretty as a picture – both inside and out. You're spoilt for choice here, with two sitting rooms to choose between. Both super comfortable and classically furnished, there's the front room with its arched window and cosy sofas, and the former dining room with its armchairs and log burning stove. Giving the option of letting the youngsters have their own living space, it's a handy arrangement made possible by the kitchen extension. In this modern space, you'll have an excellent, fully kitted-out kitchen (hello range cooker!) and a dining area that opens out to the charming little courtyard. In the summer evenings, it's the perfect spot for dinner and drinks outside. With two good size bedrooms and a luxurious bathroom with a freestanding bathtub, we didn't think this warm, welcoming home could get any better. But it can – you're welcome to bring along your pet too.

Located just ten minutes' walk from the centre of York, this address is comprised of two townhouses on a quiet residential street. Given that they're neighbouring properties, it will probably come as no surprise to learn that the layouts of both homes are pretty similar and they have been styled in a complementary fashion too, with wooden floors, traditional furnishings and walls painted in muted colours.

There are plenty of welcome extras to discover, too. South-facing terraces with seating can be found outside the back door of each home. If it's a rainy afternoon, there's a basement in one of the houses that has a home cinema set-up, a foosball table and a large selection of board games. Upstairs, the Japanese-style soaking tub provides an altogether more relaxing option.

Although York's historic attractions in the centre of the city are easily reachable on foot, there are plenty more distractions even closer by. Bishopthorpe Road — affectionately known to locals as Bishy Road — awaits at the end of the street and is packed with great restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs. If you're looking to get acquainted with a number of them, the host can lend guests a House of York Craft Savvy Card, which offers a quarter of the bill at many independent spots.

Hit the shops, restaurants and pubs of Bishy Road or make the ten-minute stroll along the River Ouse into the meandering medieval heart of York. It’s a typical red-brick terrace house with period features like original fireplaces and a claw-footed tub on display inside. The kitchen is farmhouse-style, perfect for rustling up family meals and the rustic dining table continues the provincial feel. Those bringing four-legged friends will find the little enclosed backyard a real bonus. 

Bishop Moves Diagonal

This stylish studio is just a stone's throw from the centre of the picturesque city of York. Your hosts employed the services of interior designers to maximise the available space, creating a contemporary and clutter-free home where everything has its place. The open-plan space is topped off with a wall-mounted TV that's best enjoyed from bed – we challenge you to stay awake through even the most gripping thriller. The apartment also benefits from access to a lovely L-shaped outdoor courtyard with a hanging chair that's perfect for lazy afternoons reading outdoors in the sunshine. From your central location, even the furthest reaches of York city centre are no more than a fifteen-minute walk away, while the majority is just a five-minute stroll. Be sure to marvel at the magnificent York Minster, stride along The Shambles, and while away an afternoon or two in its many art galleries and museums.

Character features like its cast iron fireplace and sash windows are complemented by Victorian-style radiators, vintage wall art and classic furnishings – with a few antique pieces thrown in and some lovely William Morris prints. Cosy up on the squashy sofa, eat at the table in the dining room or sit outside in the courtyard with a glass of wine. There's a modern kitchen and a ground floor bathroom, with two equal-sized bedrooms upstairs. Cross the river and walk into town for brunch at one of the many cafes, before exploring all the historic sights this beautiful city has to offer.

You'll also find the sitting room on this level, with an inviting corner sofa, plus a couple of single chairs that can be converted into beds if you need them. Continue through the home to find a flexible sleeping space and master bathroom on this floor, with two further bedrooms (one en-suite) on the top floor. Start each day by picking up provisions from the Pig & Pastry cafe just around the corner before crossing the river into the medieval heart of York. It'll take you a very manageable fifteen-to-twenty-minute stroll to reach the headline sights, including the famous Jorvik Viking Museum, York Minster cathedral and the shopping streets of The Shambles.

West of the River

This charming two-bedroom home is set in a central part of York – down the street from a host of wonderful coffee shops and just a ten-minute stroll along the city walls to the heart of town. If you’re hoping to catch a race at the famed York Racecourse, it’s just a fifteen-minute walk away, while the medieval shopping streets of The Shambles are a thirteen-minute walk from home. When you return back, you’ll find a bright and welcoming environment with plenty of natural light to complement the blonde hardwood floors. Unwind in front of the log burner when it’s chilly, or out in the sun on the back terrace in finer weather. Sizzle dinner on the barbecue as you lounge in the fresh air, or else slip through the garden doors back into the kitchen and start preparing a feast to enjoy at the modern dining table. Despite these prominent period features, the bulk of the interior is actually quite modern, with cleansingly white walls, en vogue wooden floorboards and a sleek white kitchen. Housed in period conversion just a six-minute walk from the famous York Minster, this apartment isn’t the flashiest in our collection, but its location makes it perfect for sightseeing endeavours. The decor is a little sparse and modest for our liking. That said, the kitchen is a good size and the main bedroom’s walk-in closet equipped with a vanity is a nice touch. Free on-site parking will come in handy for those looking to explore further afield, but with countless historic sights within easy walking distance, we think the best way to explore the city is on foot.

We love this location – there are plenty of independent shops, cafes and eateries along Bishopthorpe Road to take advantage of, and York's ancient city walls are just moments away. If green space is what you crave, Rowantree Park along the River Ouse is a ten-minute walk, but the real draw here is York Minster and the historic city centre – easily reachable in less than twenty minutes on foot.

And Then There Were Nuns

A stay in York deserves a home that radiates history from its seams. This 16th-century apartment fits right in with the narrow, medieval streets around it and has an enviable view of York Minster. If that’s not a testament to how central you are, buzzing tearooms, trendy restaurants and cosy pubs are all on your doorstep. The building itself is a typical black and white, timber-clad home and inside you’ll find a potted history of the rooms from their design. Wood-panelled walls whisper of the 19th-century, while the gnarled old timber beams of the 16th-century show through too. The living room is a regal space, like the drawing rooms of times gone by, and has big sash windows, high ceilings and an upright piano for an evening sing-along. The kitchen has everything you need to make every meal of the day (perhaps using some of the fabulous produce from the artisan deli downstairs), and the dining area has a delightful antler and top-hat feature on the wall. Bedrooms are also a trip through history, tucked up in the eaves beneath darkwood beams. The master bedroom downstairs features a hand-made king-size bed for the perfect night's sleep. An extra bonus is the little outdoor seating area where you can catch a breath of fresh air and hear the bells of the Minster toll in the background.

This apartment lies right in the mix of York’s City Centre West, within a few minutes’ walk of the famous River Ouse and historic sites like York Minster and Shambles Market. Nearby, you’ll also find a host of fine local shops, restaurants, and bars along Bishopthorpe Road and Micklegate.
