Quietly removed from York’s centre in a residential neighbourhood north of the city, this home will suit those looking to escape the crowds. While the pared-back, neutral interiors aren’t anything to write home about, the double-height ceilings, exposed beams, and sweet twin bedroom on the mezzanine bring plenty of character. And outside, the suntrap terrace garden is a nice touch for evening drinks. If time is on your side, take the riverside walk into York’s centre along the River Ouse (a lazy forty-five-minute stroll). Or hop on the bus (located two minutes from your door) or the bike tracks, and you’ll be there in no time.

If you’re in York for culture, history, and plenty of pub trips, then this home couldn’t be any more perfectly placed. You’ll be living a two-minute walk from York Minster, and just three from the Theatre Royal, York Art Gallery, and the watering holes of Stonegate. This ancient street, where the house is located, was once the medieval route into the city from the north. But today, it’s your route to luxe living in the city centre. A former jewellery shop, the quaint brick building still has quirky features and a creative soul. As soon as you step inside, the striking decor is sure to capture your imagination. Floor tiles with a star pattern give the space a Moorish vibe, an exposed brick alcove shows how the home has retained traditional architecture, but then modern elements such as the charcoal-grey kitchen cabinets bring you back to the 21st-century. Up in the bedroom, a funky, plant-patterned feature wall sits in another stairway alcove, and a bright-red velvet headboard brings a regal edge to proceedings. There's a fireplace to gather around on those chillier evenings, while the mirrored doors on the bedroom wardrobe will make it easy to get ready ahead of an evening out. Located four minutes' walk from the York City Walls, many of the main attractions are equally easy to reach. The cathedral is less than ten minutes away on foot, while the castle takes fifteen.

In times gone by, it was farmyard animals that called this building home. However, in the years since, the hosts — one of whom used to be a joiner — have converted the space into a gorgeous rural escape. The high ceilings remain, but little else is recognisable. The stark white walls and wooden floors accentuate the bountiful amounts of natural light streaming in through the glass doors and there's a log burner for after the sun's gone down. Until that point, however, there are a couple of outdoor spaces in the wraparound garden, which feature alfresco seating and a charcoal barbecue. If this gives you a bit of inspiration to spend a little time outside the house, you're in a superb location to enjoy nature. The Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in just over twenty minutes in the car, while the North York Moors National Park take around forty. The city of York sits twenty minutes' drive in the opposite direction, as well.

The Grade-II listed building dates back to the 19th century, and you can admire the traditional equipment still on show today. However, there is plenty of modern charm here too – you'll love the comfy sofa and bright green kitchen where you can cook up your favourite dishes. After a delicious meal at the stylish dining bench, you can head downstairs to the games room for some fun. Challenge your guests to a round of pool, or simply chill out on the beanbags as you plan your itinerary for the following day. 

Walk across the River Ouse, and you'll arrive in the vibrant heart of York. The Shambles is a twelve-minute stroll away from your front door, where you can browse the quirky boutiques lining the cobbled streets. Families and friends alike will settle right in here and pets are welcome to join you, but thanks to its many stairs, low windows and trip hazards, young children will need supervision at all times. There is space to sit out with a drink or an alfresco meal in the small courtyard garden – this is overlooked by surrounding buildings and may not feel fully private. Self-check-in makes arrival easy and convenient, though the nearest parking spot is a short walk away. We think the best way to explore the area is on foot though, so having a car here isn't a necessity.

This apartment has an ace up its sleeve — a huge wraparound balcony that has a superb view of the most famous building in the city, York Minster. There's space to sit out here with this wonderful backdrop, but don't worry if it's too cold, as the floor-to-ceiling windows running around the length of the living space ensures that it's possible to take it in while sitting indoors. 

The interior takes the best parts of 1970s design — the earthy colour palette, patterned wallpaper and natural materials — to create a space that's retro without feeling dated. For the cherry on the cake, the kitchen has plenty of surface space for cooking up a storm and a bathtub upstairs will help you relax after a long day of sightseeing, which is welcomingly easy to do from the central location. Five minutes' walk will get to Museum Gardens, while the same amount of time in the opposite direction will see you reach the medieval shopping street, York Shambles.

There’s a certain Scandi vibe created by the furnishings and colour scheme – we particularly love the yellow rug, plus matching throws and cushions. The elegant, modern armchairs make for an inviting perch where you can enjoy a proper Yorkshire brew on arrival (you might even find this in the welcome hamper from your host). But on a sunny day, you might want to take your tea out to your private balcony. Open up the French doors from the lounge, where the playful yellow colour scheme continues with a cute metal dining set – anyone for a slice of cake too?

Not only is the apartment beautiful, but it’s also in a fantastic location. Nestled in a residential area but just a short walk from the city centre, you get the best of both worlds. You’ll love exploring the famous Roman walls, the Georgian architecture, and trying to tick off as many of the thirty museums as possible. If you fancy a break from the city, the Yorkshire Dales are within easy reach for long, windy walks in the countryside. However you spend the day, you’ll be glad to come home to your apartment. With everything so new it's practically sparkling, you'll have a sociable, open-plan living space with a comfy sofa and a smart dining table, along with a high-spec contemporary kitchen area with all the kit you'll need to cook at home. Both bedrooms are stylish and each has a dedicated bathroom so there won't be any need to queue for the shower in the morning. Little luxuries include welcome treats, underfloor heating in the bathrooms and a funky remote control backlight behind the TV – to set the mood for the evening. The location couldn't be better either, with a walk of fewer than ten minutes into the city centre.

There’s nothing quite like waking up to views of the historic Minster but before you take a closer look, find the comfiest spot on the squashy leather sofa and relax a while. When hunger strikes, the kitchenette is well-equipped for knocking up your favourite dishes – though if you’d prefer to hang up your chef’s hat, you’re no more than a ten-minute walk from a clamour of restaurants. Start your York adventure at the famous cathedral, just four minutes from your doorstep. From here, take the seven-minute saunter to the Shambles where crooked and characterful alleyways lay claim to a number of quirky independent shops and cafes. Once evening falls, embark on a spooky ghost hunt or quench your thirst with a well-deserved craft cocktail in a cutting-edge bar.

Mind How You Go

Whether you’re looking for history, culture, or culinary delights, York has it all. In this wonderfully walkable city, you’ll pass by ancient landmarks, then turn a corner onto a bustling street of shops, restaurants, and pubs. But after you’ve sampled a few local beers and ales, you’ll need a spot to rest your weary head. How does a serene, waterside apartment on the River Foss sound to you? It’s just a nine-minute walk from York Castle, fifteen from York Art Gallery, and a minute away from dining and drinking spots. We love the setting, on the ground floor of a stand-out riverside building – a converted, warehouse-style block with red brickwork and tons of sash windows across its facade. The interiors are just as gorgeous, but lean more towards modern than traditional. In the bright living space, you’ve got your own huge window and fabulous exposed brickwork at one end, then a stylish, understated kitchen at the other. In between, there’s a certain Scandi feel from the furniture, but you’re brought back to York with the colourful canvas of the historic cityscape above the plush sofa. Get the kettle on (before you get too comfy).

Hoppy Ale

There's a timeless quality to this home, just a short walk from the city centre. Part of a period terrace, it's as pretty as a picture – both inside and out. You're spoilt for choice here, with two sitting rooms to choose between. Both super comfortable and classically furnished, there's the front room with its arched window and cosy sofas, and the former dining room with its armchairs and log burning stove. Giving the option of letting the youngsters have their own living space, it's a handy arrangement made possible by the kitchen extension. In this modern space, you'll have an excellent, fully kitted-out kitchen (hello range cooker!) and a dining area that opens out to the charming little courtyard. In the summer evenings, it's the perfect spot for dinner and drinks outside. With two good size bedrooms and a luxurious bathroom with a freestanding bathtub, we didn't think this warm, welcoming home could get any better. But it can – you're welcome to bring along your pet too.

Housed in a converted granary once used by corn merchants Hurtley Dickinsons & Sons in the 1800s, this beautiful home may be steeped in history but its interiors are nothing short of modern luxury. 

From the beautiful engineered oak flooring to the contemporary-chic furnishings and luxe details (like 500 thread count bedding, a 65-inch TV with 180+ digital channels and Neff and Bosch appliances), this home has been lovingly curated to give you a stylish, comfortable stay. 

Pour yourself a welcome gin and tonic and make yourself comfortable on the living room’s plush sofas as you look out onto views of nearby York Minster. These privileged views are enjoyed from every room in the apartment – not least of all the stunning bedrooms. With two sleek porcelain-tiled showers – one of which is an en-suite – offering rainfall showers and heated mirrors, you’ve got everything you need to experience the city in sumptuous fashion. 

When it comes to exploring, you couldn’t be better placed either. Explore the historic Shambles (a three-minute walk), stroll along the York City Walls (a five-minute walk), and visit York Minster up close, just seven minutes away on foot. With plenty of restaurants, bars and cafés nearby too, there’s no end to the enjoyment in store.

York is most well-known for its stunning cathedral, historic marketplace and city walls dating back to 71 CE. And this home, only a short walk from the city centre, has a direct view of the latter. On sunny days, admire the ancient stonework from your small patio, savouring a glass of wine as the evening draws to a close. It's an unparalleled view and we adore it – morning, noon or night, you'll want to spend every second dining alfresco and soaking up the views. The interior is modern and stylish, with lots of space to spread out and unwind. Sink into the squishy L-shaped sofa, do a spot of work from one of the two desks and whip up a meal in the pastel-coloured kitchen, which has everything you'll need for cooking. But when you want to explore your surroundings, you're just a ten-minute walk from York Minster, nine from the famous Betty's Tea Rooms and six from Shambles Market. With restaurants, pubs and plenty of local shops to browse, you'll have more than enough to keep you busy – and the private off-road parking is the icing on the cake.

Beyond The City Walls

In a city with as rich a heritage as York, it only makes sense to find a place to stay that is equally as historic. Found on the famous Micklegate street — complete with four Grade-I listed buildings and three medieval churches — this apartment sits within a building that dates back to the fifteenth century. Nowhere is this fact more obvious than in the wooden ceiling beams in the living area and the timber frames seen in other rooms. Despite these prominent period features, the bulk of the interior is actually quite modern, with cleansingly white walls, en vogue wooden floorboards and a sleek white kitchen. It's a lovely place to return to after a day of learning about the city's interesting past. Five minutes' walk in one direction will take you to Micklegate Bar and the city walls, while the same amount of time in the opposite direction will see you reach the museum at Fairfax House

A Spoonful of Sugar

Affectionally known as Bishy Road to locals, Bishopthorpe Road is home to an award-winning collection of independent shops and is the frequent venue for street parties. It's a great place to stay near if you want to see a more authentic side of York and as luck would have it, this house sits on a side street just off the famous thoroughfare. We can't really find anything to fault with the interior — the long, open living space on the ground floor is bright and welcoming thanks to a big bay window on one side and glass doors on the other. Go through these and you'll be greeted by a courtyard with seating for alfresco feasts in the summer months. For want of a better word, it's all very homely, which is exactly what you want when visiting a new city. If you fancy a jaunt into the historic centre, you can be on the other side of the River Ouse in under ten minutes on foot.

This smart, modern apartment couldn't be better placed for exploring York – tucked away in a quiet spot but just a five-minute walk from the many shops, restaurants and major attractions. Set on the ground floor, with its own entrance, it's a great base that's been designed with easy living in mind. Unfussy and practical, you can just unpack and slip straight into life in this historic city. 

Fresh and contemporary, the sociable, open-plan living space has three windows to the street, allowing plenty of natural light in, and there's a comfy green sofa just for two in front of the TV. Cook at home in the well-kitted-out kitchen and eat at the dining table with lemon yellow seats. Topped off with a cosy bedroom and a stylish shower room, this home is perfect for couples or solo travellers. Best of all you can be in York's famous Shambles in around ten minutes on foot.
