Quietly removed from York’s centre in a residential neighbourhood north of the city, this home will suit those looking to escape the crowds. While the pared-back, neutral interiors aren’t anything to write home about, the double-height ceilings, exposed beams, and sweet twin bedroom on the mezzanine bring plenty of character. And outside, the suntrap terrace garden is a nice touch for evening drinks. If time is on your side, take the riverside walk into York’s centre along the River Ouse (a lazy forty-five-minute stroll). In times gone by, it was farmyard animals that called this building home. However, in the years since, the hosts — one of whom used to be a joiner — have converted the space into a gorgeous rural escape. The high ceilings remain, but little else is recognisable. The stark white walls and wooden floors accentuate the bountiful amounts of natural light streaming in through the glass doors and there's a log burner for after the sun's gone down. Until that point, however, there are a couple of outdoor spaces in the wraparound garden, which feature alfresco seating and a charcoal barbecue. If this gives you a bit of inspiration to spend a little time outside the house, you're in a superb location to enjoy nature. The Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in just over twenty minutes in the car, while the North York Moors National Park take around forty. The city of York sits twenty minutes' drive in the opposite direction, as well.

Families and friends alike will settle right in here and pets are welcome to join you, but thanks to its many stairs, low windows and trip hazards, young children will need supervision at all times. There is space to sit out with a drink or an alfresco meal in the small courtyard garden – this is overlooked by surrounding buildings and may not feel fully private. Self-check-in makes arrival easy and convenient, though the nearest parking spot is a short walk away. We think the best way to explore the area is on foot though, so having a car here isn't a necessity.

This apartment has an ace up its sleeve — a huge wraparound balcony that has a superb view of the most famous building in the city, York Minster. There's space to sit out here with this wonderful backdrop, but don't worry if it's too cold, as the floor-to-ceiling windows running around the length of the living space ensures that it's possible to take it in while sitting indoors. 

The interior takes the best parts of 1970s design — the earthy colour palette, patterned wallpaper and natural materials — to create a space that's retro without feeling dated. For the cherry on the cake, the kitchen has plenty of surface space for cooking up a storm and a bathtub upstairs will help you relax after a long day of sightseeing, which is welcomingly easy to do from the central location. But when you want to explore your surroundings, you're just a ten-minute walk from York Minster, nine from the famous Betty's Tea Rooms and six from Shambles Market. Affectionally known as Bishy Road to locals, Bishopthorpe Road is home to an award-winning collection of independent shops and is the frequent venue for street parties. It's a great place to stay near if you want to see a more authentic side of York and as luck would have it, this house sits on a side street just off the famous thoroughfare. We can't really find anything to fault with the interior — the long, open living space on the ground floor is bright and welcoming thanks to a big bay window on one side and glass doors on the other. Whip up breakfast in the gadget-ladened kitchen then gather your ensemble at the dining table for a lazy morning feast. Curl up on the plush sofa with a cuppa and a good book – there's Netflix at the ready too, if that's more your style. Or sneak back to bed in the boutique-style bedrooms with freshly brewed coffee and open up the Juliet balcony doors. Wherever you choose to be, those bird's eye views of river life and the city's rooftops will be right there. 

And when the medieval city finally comes calling, you won't have far to go. Thanks to its privileged setting nestled within the city's medieval walls, all the must-see sights are walkable. Get off to a flying start at York Castle, just a six-minute saunter over the Foss River.

Rising Up

In a city with as rich a heritage as York, it only makes sense to find a place to stay that is equally as historic. Found on the famous Micklegate street — complete with four Grade-I listed buildings and three medieval churches — this apartment sits within a building that dates back to the fifteenth century. Nowhere is this fact more obvious than in the wooden ceiling beams in the living area and the timber frames seen in other rooms. Despite these prominent period features, the bulk of the interior is actually quite modern, with cleansingly white walls, en vogue wooden floorboards and a sleek white kitchen. It's a lovely place to return to after a day of learning about the city's interesting past. Five minutes' walk in one direction will take you to Micklegate Bar and the city walls, while the same amount of time in the opposite direction will see you reach the museum at Fairfax House

A Spoonful of Sugar

While the city of York might be known for its historic architecture, this modern apartment with its chic design and cosy furnishings will make you feel perfectly at home in the present. It is located just a fifteen-minute walk from the city centre, providing easy access to famous sites like York Minster and York Castle Museum, as well as a range of trendy restaurants, bars, and cafes. While the upstairs bedrooms each provide a sense of privacy and comfort, it is the main floor’s living room, kitchen, and diner that is the highlight. There's a timeless quality to this home, just a short walk from the city centre. Part of a period terrace, it's as pretty as a picture – both inside and out. You're spoilt for choice here, with two sitting rooms to choose between. Both super comfortable and classically furnished, there's the front room with its arched window and cosy sofas, and the former dining room with its armchairs and log burning stove. Giving the option of letting the youngsters have their own living space, it's a handy arrangement made possible by the kitchen extension. In this modern space, you'll have an excellent, fully kitted-out kitchen (hello range cooker!) and a dining area that opens out to the charming little courtyard. In the summer evenings, it's the perfect spot for dinner and drinks outside. With two good size bedrooms and a luxurious bathroom with a freestanding bathtub, we didn't think this warm, welcoming home could get any better. But it can – you're welcome to bring along your pet too. 

Bellflowers at Teatime

Set beside the River Ouse, this trendy apartment guarantees a relaxing stay in the heart of historic York. We loved spending downtime in the living space, we were particularly fond of the licks of moody blue paint and antique trunks and chests. Cleverly placed mirrors open up the room, while deep, tufted sofas add a touch of cosiness. In the kitchen, you’ll find all you’ll need for putting together your favourite meals. After a hearty lunch at the bistro set, people-watch by the waterfront or follow the river into the city for cream tea in the medieval Shambles and a history lesson at the JORVIK Viking Centre, just a six-minute walk away. When it’s time to call it a day, head home to your comfy double bed and wind down with your favourite show on the nifty pop-up TV.

Yorkshire Blue

The wraparound balcony affording views of the medieval city walls is taking all the limelight at this modern, bright apartment perched right in the heart of York's bustling centre. And rightly so. A home to be enjoyed in all seasons, in summer months, swing the doors right back and take breakfast outside on the suntrap veranda as you hatch plans for the day ahead. On wintery days, curl up on the deep, sumptuous sofa with a cuppa and lose yourself to views of the distant historic rooftops. And despite its central location, our guests love how quiet this home feels, meaning you'll be sure to bank a peaceful night's sleep. But when it's time to get out adventuring, you're closer to the bustle than you think. All the historical must-sees are within walking distance, including York Minister (sixteen minutes on foot) and the vibrant Shambles Market (ten minutes on foot). And when thoughts turn to food, you'll be surprised by the delicious global fare this city offers in its bustling restaurants. Just be sure to save room for a fat rascal scone from Betty's Café Tea Rooms (just fourteen minutes on foot) – no visit to York is complete without one. 

Walk the Wall

Looking across the River Foss to Clifford’s Tower perched on a hilltop, this luxurious little apartment puts you in the centre of the city. Walk along the banks of the River Foss and past the ramshackle old streets to reach the central Shambles market in just six minutes. The Minster is just beyond, a ten-minute walk from the apartment. 

From the apartment’s balcony, you’ve got uninterrupted views over the Foss River to Clifford’s Tower – a 13th-century fortification sitting atop a hill. This is the perfect spot for a drink or two at the end of the day. River views continue inside, where floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room flood the place with natural light. Hardwood floors add a classy touch, and the underfloor heating is a delight in the winter months. The open-plan living area feels spacious and sleek, and the master bedroom is particularly plush with its chaise longue and desk should you need to work remotely. 

Clifford's View

It's no mean feat to find somewhere in a charming, rural spot that's super close to the historic city centre of York. But this charming little home pulls it off with aplomb. A converted farm building in a scenic location around twenty-five minutes from town by car, it's a perfect retreat for a couple or a small family. Owned by Guy and Tracey's family for generations, they've turned the former farm and livery into a small group of exclusive homes, each with its own unique character. Where cows used to be housed, there's now a sleek, modern home with skylights and a fabulous log burning stove. There's a smart kitchen with everything you'll need to cook at home and a dining table for up to four. Or choose to eat outside, where your table and chairs overlook your pretty garden and the paddocks beyond. Guy, who used to be a joiner, has used his skills to handcraft some of the furniture in the cottage – including the impressive backlit headboard in the bedroom.
