Vintage shops, trendy eateries, and the famous Portobello Road Market are all within walking distance, as is a Tube station when you fancy exploring further afield. It's on the lower ground floor, so though it lacks a bit of natural light, the open-plan design works well for groups. There's a sleek (albeit compact) kitchen, a main suite with a desk for remote working, and a second bedroom that can be arranged with twin beds or a double to suit your needs. Guests five and six will sleep on a sofa bed – a fair compromise for this central location.

This Paddington apartment has space to work from home and excellent transport links across the city. It's a great find for business travellers, though families and friend groups will also feel right at home. Keep in mind that the living space is on the smaller side, and it's on the third floor of a building without a lift. Even so, given the location – a five-minute walk from Paddington Station and twenty minutes from Hyde Park – we think that's a fair compromise.

The building is one of the oldest in Mayfair – in 1821, famed Buckingham Palace architect Thomas Cubbit extended it – and you can see the character, history and period details in every room. It feels like a home you want to linger in, with new surprises waiting at every turn. We love the antique furniture – a clawfoot desk here, a fauteuil armchair there – but the smart kitchen, stylish bathroom and mod-cons like a rainfall shower, espresso machine and Netflix bring things in the 21st-century. Ritzy and charming, Mayfair is home to leafy squares, cobbled lanes lined with cafes and some of the oldest shops in London. Overall, it manages to strike the sought-for balance between artistic coherence and somewhere you can actually feel at home within. In the open-concept living-kitchen area, light flows through the space thanks to windows on either end. The design is definitely Scandi in influence — clock the clean lines and preference for wood surfaces — but the abstract artwork stops it from feeling too identikit. Rather pleasingly for a home for two, the cobalt kitchen has a wealth of sleek surface space for whipping up romantic dinners, while the pristinely tiled bathroom has a tub that will surely sing to you after a long day on your feet.

Although the surrounding neighbourhood has a welcomingly quiet residential feel, some of the UK capital's most famous sights are only a short walk away — both The British Museum and St Paul's Cathedral will take you all of twenty minutes to reach.

Our favourite room is the glossy kitchen, which is decked out with all the amenities you'll need – double Siemens ovens, a humidity-controlled fridge, top-of-the-range cookware and even a Nordic Quooker boiling tap, just to name a few. We think keen chefs and amateur cooks alike will love rustling up a tasty breakfast or hearty dinner under the skylight. 

Both bedrooms are as comfortable as they are stylish – one even has access to a small, narrow patio – and the bathrooms are the definition of grand, with their lavish rainfall showers and polished marble walls. And we adore the exposed grey brick scattered around, most notably in the living room – it's the perfect area to relax after a busy day taking advantage the pubs, bookstores and museums that dot this corner of London. 

Speaking of location, Bloomsbury is an excellent base for a stay in the capital. The British Museum is only thirteen minutes on foot, while iconic spots like Covent Garden, St Paul's Cathedral and Trafalgar Square are also within walking distance – about half an hour, give or take. Whether you want to shop on Oxford Street, sample the gastronomic delights in Soho or just roam the city in search of adventure, you'll be well-placed for exploring – especially with Chancery Lane station less than ten minutes away.

The whole area has a classy and traditional London vibe, so upon entering this grand building, you might be surprised by the interiors of the flat. Sleek white fixtures and fittings, monochrome photography prints, honey-coloured flooring, and a neutral colour palette are a welcome contrast to the buzz of nearby Piccadilly. Sip an Earl Grey on the balcony as you look out over the city centre from your vantage point. The plush bedrooms also feature French doors or large windows with views – it’s a city that deserves to be seen. You should be able to spot St James's Church at Piccadilly, right across the street. As it’s well known for its classical music programme, why not stop in for a lunchtime concert? Then on to St James’s Square, where you can unwind in elegant and peaceful formal gardens. For the evening, the glitzy restaurants of Mayfair are calling. You won’t even need to hail a black cab, as it’s only a ten-minute walk away.

We love the semi-outdoor dining room, housed in a glass atrium-style space to the rear of the ship, with seating for ten. Choose to relax in the stylish white lounge on the upper deck, or head downstairs to the snug with its u-shaped sofa around a striking suspended fireplace. Bedrooms are on the lower deck, but that doesn’t mean dark cabins with tiny portholes. Spacious rooms have walls of windows and if there are portholes, they’re the size of a bass drum, letting in tonnes of natural light. If you manage to bag the master bedroom, its en-suite comes with a sauna. Welcome aboard, matey!

All Afloat

Situated on a unique crescent-shaped street of Victorian homes – this apartment in Kings Cross is a great find. There’s an array of restaurants, bars and boutiques at nearby Granary Square and Coal Drops Yard, or have a stroll along the canal close by. The apartment itself has been featured in a variety of films and advertisements and takes its inspiration from a collection of artists and intellectuals known as the Bloomsbury Group. The highlight for us though is the pretty courtyard garden – the perfect spot for reading a book.

Whether you’re here for work, pleasure or both, this apartment has everything you could need to switch off and unwind. The rooms are set across two floors and you’ll find plenty of space to work, relax and disconnect after a day of exploring.

With its all-white interior design and tranquil views of Inverness Terrace, White Doves is a peaceful home. A beautiful Bayswater sanctuary (just steps away from Hyde Park), it’s one of those places that you look forward to coming home to at the end of a long day of sightseeing. We can’t get over all the period features – the picture-perfect crown moulding and the charming windows being our favourite parts. On top of that, Jane is also a wonderful host, who’s put a lot of care into designing a seamless space filled with a welcoming atmosphere.

You’ll find this stunning apartment in a quiet residential area on the border of Chelsea and Belgravia. It’s close to Sloane Square, Kings Road, and the wonderful museums of South Kensington. The apartment is chic and stylish, decorated with bold splashes of colour that make it a warm and welcoming space to call home. It’s equipped with everything you might need for a break in London, including laundry facilities for longer stays. The bunk bed room is perfect for children, though it’s on the smaller side.

This cottage is ten minutes on foot from Clapham Junction and twenty from Battersea Park. Though it's not in the thick of central London, you'll still be incredibly well-connected here – trains can whisk you away to Victoria, Waterloo, or London Bridge in about ten minutes. Back home, we're smitten with the cosy living space, from the characterful wooden shutters to the host's collection of well-thumbed books. The kitchen has all the essentials to whip up dinner – best enjoyed in the bay window – and the small garden is the icing on the cake. It has sundowners written all over it – the perfect end to a day spent sightseeing.
