We were stunned by the ornate plasterwork, massive fireplaces and antique furnishings. Wake up to a view of the shimmering waters of Loch Long and The River Clyde. Every care has been taken to make the place as kid-friendly as possible – from ensuring the sockets and fireplaces are covered to providing high-chairs and cribs. From the outside, this Victorian home looks as quaint as quaint can be, but inside, guests will find an apartment that mixes vintage and modern aspects with considerable dexterity. In the living room, a large bay window floods the space with natural daylight, which dances nicely off the wooden floors and walls painted in muted grey. Elsewhere, we're big fans of the gleaming copper bathtub in the master bathroom that promises to be as comfortable as it is handsome. Within an hours' drive of Edinburgh, this countryside cottage in the Scottish Borders town of Greenlaw enjoys the best of both worlds. While you have the option to head to the city for the day, you can also stay put, enjoying moorland views and hill walks — Berwick-upon-Tweed and its coastline is only half an hour's drive away, too. The recently refurbished interior is a lovely place to return to after time spent out in the elements, with comfy furnishings positioned around the log burner sure to have you feeling warm and toasty again. Failing that, a long soak in the bathtub will do the trick. Meals can also be taken out on the little picnic-style bench, because believe us when we say, you’re going to want as much time as possible here enjoying the magic of simply being present in the space. 

Watch mist dissipate, clouds roll across the sky to cast shadows on the loch, and when the infamous Scottish weather drives you inside, well, you’ll still have floor-to-ceiling windows through which to keep that connection with the rugged beauty outside. 

With marble, wood, texture, and a lot of detail, this home not only feels modern, but it somehow retains the charm of a log cabin, albeit more luxurious, and the warmth that comes with it, making this feel like a home away from home. Spend wet days stretched out on the sofa with cocoa in hand, or take full advantage of the board games on offer here and have yourself a bit of friendly competition.

Take advantage of sunny days by exploring the area and find the Ardessie Falls only a short walk away. Stop off at the pancake tearoom or drive about fifteen minutes away to dine at the Ocean View Hotel. One of Scotaland’s famous hidden beaches, Gunaird Bay, is also at the end of a fifteen-minute drive.

Dating back over 170 years, this beautiful home in the Scottish Borders was updated in 1870 to take on the Scottish Baronial features that gave it its fairytale castle look, but it was only in the late 70s that the incredible vaulted ceiling was discovered and the mezzanine was added to update the home to what it is today. Of course there has been modernisation since to give it the contemporary, but homely, feel and the result is an ambient, open space that encourages rest and relaxation. 

With the windows stretching up to towards the ceiling, there’s plenty of natural light and bookworms will rejoice to find a little home library on the mezzanine where they’re able to curl up with any of the good books on offer. Look out over the lounge from up there and when you get a little cold, head down to kindle the fireplace so you can watch the flames dance between every turn of the page. 

Musicians can retire to the piano room to hone their skills or entertain the rest of the family in style, but not before sitting down for dinner at the chunky oak table. 

Take to the garden as a group, or in isolation, and walk along the sloping paths as you breathe in the fragrant scents of apple, plum and flowering cherry trees of the orchard. You can also do this from the outdoor bench as you nibble on shortbread. 

With a bike shed on site, why not bring along bicycles so you can head out to explore the Borders on two wheels. With golf courses aplenty, fishing opportunities, beautiful landscapes to admire, and plenty more around, you’ll never run out of things to do. This is one of those homes for which first impressions can be deceiving. From the outside, the nineteenth-century stone exterior looks rather traditional, but the interior is a completely different story. Walls painted in a muted grey, wooden floors and striking monochrome portraits are as modern as they come, and the design works particularly well with the bountiful amounts of natural light from the bay windows. Pristinely designed it might be, but there's also a whole lot of fun to be had here, too. Out in the garden, there's a hot tub in which you can sit and take in the view of the Sound of Karrera. There's also a separate shed which doubles up as a games room, complete with tables for ping-pong, poker and pool. In the town of Oban, there are distilleries and seafood restaurants to visit, but as you can probably guess from the scenery, there are lots of coastal walks to embark upon too, including forty-five minutes to Ganavan Sands.

The property is a stunning holiday home located in a secluded loch-side setting with breathtaking views of Loch Etive and Glencoe. This spacious six-bedroom home can accommodate up to twelve guests and boasts six bathrooms, making it perfect for holidays with family and friends. The house features a fully enclosed garden, Wi-Fi, an Aga, and ample parking. Guests can access the Loch directly from the garden via a track and boat owners can use the owner's slipway and buoy for an additional charge. Fishing rods and mackerel lines are also available on request. The surrounding area offers many popular destinations such as Inverawe Smokehouse and Shop, Taynuilt village, and Oban, which is about 30 minutes' drive away. Children and dogs are welcome, but guests must be aware that there is a small garden pond at the back of the house and that the property is accessed via a rough forestry track.

The interior has been restored, but there are lots of features that date back to a century ago, including the wood panelling and fireplace. Elsewhere, there are furnishings in rich colours, antiques dotted about the rooms and a hand-painted mural in the bedroom, which all work together for a boutique feel. Outside, we are smitten with the charming cobbled courtyard with seating, potted plants and access to a private walled garden. Beyond the home's boundaries lies a wealth of natural attractions on the estate to discover, from two lochs and a pair of waterfalls to three beaches and plenty of walking routes along a stretch of craggy coastline. There's even a maze on the grounds if you have an afternoon going spare. The village of Portpatrick can be reached in twenty minutes on foot, as well.

Even if you don't spy Nessie, you can hop on one of the boat tours to sail along the water, or hit one of the nearby walking trails for an invigorating hike through the Highland landscapes.
