We were stunned by the ornate plasterwork, massive fireplaces and antique furnishings. Wake up to a view of the shimmering waters of Loch Long and The River Clyde. Every care has been taken to make the place as kid-friendly as possible – from ensuring the sockets and fireplaces are covered to providing high-chairs and cribs. Your little ones will also find plenty of books, toys and a games console. You can sip a cuppa undistrubed, while the kids play make-believe in the grand rooms and sprawling garden. If you can tear yourself away, miles of stunning natural trails await you in nearby Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. A Grade-II listed former stable in the middle of Dunskey Estate, this home is a truly glorious spot. The interior has been restored, but there are lots of features that date back to a century ago, including the wood panelling and fireplace. Elsewhere, there are furnishings in rich colours, antiques dotted about the rooms and a hand-painted mural in the bedroom, which all work together for a boutique feel. Outside, we are smitten with the charming cobbled courtyard with seating, potted plants and access to a private walled garden. Beyond the home's boundaries lies a wealth of natural attractions on the estate to discover, from two lochs and a pair of waterfalls to three beaches and plenty of walking routes along a stretch of craggy coastline. There's even a maze on the grounds if you have an afternoon going spare. The village of Portpatrick can be reached in twenty minutes on foot, as well.

Flagstone floors and the old stone partition wall have been retained as though from the 18th-century, but the kitchen is all sleek units and high-spec appliances. A wood-burner still crackles at the heart of the home, keeping things cosy in the colder months. Upstairs, a plump king-size bed awaits and the traditional old window looks out onto the narrow wynd below. As for location, you’re mere footsteps from Pittenweem’s High Street (about 30, we’ve counted), where you’ll find cafés, craft shops, galleries and a fabulous fish and chip shop. It’s a two-minute walk to the East Neuk's only working harbourfront where you can watch the fishing boats land their catch of lobsters and langoustines, and St Andrews is a twenty-minute drive away.

A getaway for all seasons, this home offers a Scottish escape to remember. This enchanting home can be found on 25 acres of private woodland between the moor and Loch Sunart. Forage for chanterelles and berries, pick wildflowers – and make use of your host’s flower-arranging kit – while the kids run wild in the forest camp. It’s an incredible setting for an outdoorsy holiday, with wild swimming, biking, and kayaking all on the cards. The Scandinavian/Hebridean style house is cosy and comfortable, with a fire inside as well as a fire bowl outside. You can admire views across Loch Sunart to the Isle of Carna, Morvern, and Mull from the living room, main bedroom, and the decking and garden. There’s a bit of magic in a home like this.

If you’re seeking an escape back to nature that’s a perfect fit for two, it’s time to stop scrolling. We love this former Porters’ Lodge, packed full of character and inviting its guests to unwind. You’ll find this home set on an estate, where you can enjoy the landscaped grounds at your leisure – if you’re not too busy relaxing in your private cedar hot tub, that is. Locally, a hike up the Pentland Hills is a must, and for those seeking a city fix, Edinburgh is a thirty-minute drive away. 

Brambled Bliss

This is one of those homes for which first impressions can be deceiving. From the outside, the nineteenth-century stone exterior looks rather traditional, but the interior is a completely different story. Walls painted in a muted grey, wooden floors and striking monochrome portraits are as modern as they come, and the design works particularly well with the bountiful amounts of natural light from the bay windows. Pristinely designed it might be, but there's also a whole lot of fun to be had here, too. Out in the garden, there's a hot tub in which you can sit and take in the view of the Sound of Karrera. There's also a separate shed which doubles up as a games room, complete with tables for ping-pong, poker and pool. In the town of Oban, there are distilleries and seafood restaurants to visit, but as you can probably guess from the scenery, there are lots of coastal walks to embark upon too, including forty-five minutes to Ganavan Sands.

A moody medley of forest green and rust-red velvet sofas in the living room whisper of days gone by – the picture completed by a wood-burner set in an old fireplace carved with celtic twists. In the parlour, an upright piano awaits for someone to compose a song inspired by heather-bruised hills and craggy mountain passes. Or, perhaps choose something from the book collection and settle into a wing-backed armchair. Bedrooms are packed with paperbacks to find your next indulgent read, perhaps while soaking in the claw-footed tub of the master bathroom. Contrary to the rest of the home, the kitchen is bright and airy, but an exposed stone wall still suggests the building’s history. A welcome hamper of bubbly, tea, coffee and toiletries awaits your arrival. Spend the evening outside, gathered around the fire pit, or watching for shooting stars from the comfy sofas on the deck. The peaceful village of Carrbridge has a grocery shop and a handful of cosy pubs. You’re in the Cairngorms National Park here, so you may want to lace up those walking boots and bag some munros, or head to Speyside and sample some of the world-famous whisky distilleries.

On the banks of a secluded loch near Aboyne, this beautiful cabin comes with a beautiful story. It was originally built in the 1920s by Viscountess Cowdray, a close friend of Queen Mary. Choosing it as the perfect spot between her home and the royal estate at Balmoral, it was built so the two women could regularly meet and take tea by the water together. Sitting here, in the peaceful Aberdeenshire countryside, it's not hard to see what attracted them. The setting, overlooking the loch, and surrounded by tall pines is a truly inspirational one, and whether you're here in the middle of summer or the winter, the views from the home are second to none. Despite its rustic charm and rough Scots pine exterior, the cabin has been renovated to create a luxurious home, with antique furnishings, a log fire and vintage art. There's a modern country-style kitchen with everything you could need and two comfortable bedrooms. And who wouldn't fall in love with the huge freestanding copper bathtub in the master bedroom? Outside, hike in the woods, swim from the little jetty, fish in the nearby River Dee or watch wildlife from the veranda – visitors regularly see deer and osprey by the loch. And despite its private setting, this amazing place is just a fifteen-minute walk from the village pub across the river.

Dating back over 170 years, this beautiful home in the Scottish Borders was updated in 1870 to take on the Scottish Baronial features that gave it its fairytale castle look, but it was only in the late 70s that the incredible vaulted ceiling was discovered and the mezzanine was added to update the home to what it is today. Of course there has been modernisation since to give it the contemporary, but homely, feel and the result is an ambient, open space that encourages rest and relaxation. 

With the windows stretching up to towards the ceiling, there’s plenty of natural light and bookworms will rejoice to find a little home library on the mezzanine where they’re able to curl up with any of the good books on offer. Look out over the lounge from up there and when you get a little cold, head down to kindle the fireplace so you can watch the flames dance between every turn of the page. 

Musicians can retire to the piano room to hone their skills or entertain the rest of the family in style, but not before sitting down for dinner at the chunky oak table. 

Take to the garden as a group, or in isolation, and walk along the sloping paths as you breathe in the fragrant scents of apple, plum and flowering cherry trees of the orchard. You can also do this from the outdoor bench as you nibble on shortbread. 

With a bike shed on site, why not bring along bicycles so you can head out to explore the Borders on two wheels. With golf courses aplenty, fishing opportunities, beautiful landscapes to admire, and plenty more around, you’ll never run out of things to do. Should you choose, however, to just stay home and bask in the tranquillity, well, we certainly won’t blame you.

The property is a stunning holiday home located in a secluded loch-side setting with breathtaking views of Loch Etive and Glencoe. This spacious six-bedroom home can accommodate up to twelve guests and boasts six bathrooms, making it perfect for holidays with family and friends. The house features a fully enclosed garden, Wi-Fi, an Aga, and ample parking. Guests can access the Loch directly from the garden via a track and boat owners can use the owner's slipway and buoy for an additional charge. Fishing rods and mackerel lines are also available on request. The surrounding area offers many popular destinations such as Inverawe Smokehouse and Shop, Taynuilt village, and Oban, which is about 30 minutes' drive away. Children and dogs are welcome, but guests must be aware that there is a small garden pond at the back of the house and that the property is accessed via a rough forestry track.
