On the banks of a secluded loch near Aboyne, this beautiful cabin comes with a beautiful story. It was originally built in the 1920s by Viscountess Cowdray, a close friend of Queen Mary. Choosing it as the perfect spot between her home and the royal estate at Balmoral, it was built so the two women could regularly meet and take tea by the water together. Sitting here, in the peaceful Aberdeenshire countryside, it's not hard to see what attracted them. The setting, overlooking the loch, and surrounded by tall pines is a truly inspirational one, and whether you're here in the middle of summer or the winter, the views from the home are second to none. Despite its rustic charm and rough Scots pine exterior, the cabin has been renovated to create a luxurious home, with antique furnishings, a log fire and vintage art. There's a modern country-style kitchen with everything you could need and two comfortable bedrooms. And who wouldn't fall in love with the huge freestanding copper bathtub in the master bedroom? Outside, hike in the woods, swim from the little jetty, fish in the nearby River Dee or watch wildlife from the veranda – visitors regularly see deer and osprey by the loch. If you’re looking for a rural escape, this delightful cottage in Carlincraig is sure to fit the bill. Although just over 30 miles from Aberdeen, also known as The Silver City due to its granite buildings, this home feels a world away from any sort of metropolis. Upon arrival, rolling hills and fields stretch for miles around this stony bolthole in the countryside. But the experience isn’t exactly rustic. Your host welcomes you with a luxury hamper, packed with nibbles and a bottle of champagne. Light up the wood-burning stove, get cosy under the ANTA of Scotland blankets, and say cheers to luxe country living. On sunny days in the garden, the little ones can keep entertained with the swing-ball set, or building their secret den in the tipi. And while they play, you can get round to lighting up the barbecue. Perhaps you could even indulge in a wee dram of whisky to stay warm while you wait. Designed by Young Architects of the Year NORD in 2012, this funky home was part of a huge renovation process which restored previously derelict Victorian farm buildings into the magnificent estate that today welcomes guests to soak up the very best of Glen Dye. Glen Dye is an outdoors paradise, a nature lover's dream come true, as the large estate sits amidst 15,000 acres of woodland and rugged countryside. There are miles and miles of tracks on your doorstep for walking, cycling and running. These run through one of Britain's finest private forests or across miles and miles of moorland wilderness.

On-site, you'll also be in blissful serenity as the house comes with its own wood-fired hot tub in the garden. Pick some seasonal vegetables from the garden in preparation for a delicious homemade feast. With a big Green Egg barbecue all to yourselves – we bet you can smell the delightful smokey aromas already. There are a number of other facilities available for free use, too, including the custom-built wood-fired sauna and the BYOB (bring your own booze) pub conveniently located right next door. In addition, you'll find a shop on the premises which sells a collection of staples, including fresh local meats and fish, homemade ready meals and fresh eggs produced by the free-range chickens that belong to the owners. 

All this, and we haven't even got started on the dreamy house yet. Styled with tasteful pops of colour, eccentric artworks and contemporary furnishings throughout – the space offers a peaceful sanctuary to retreat to after a day's adventures in the Scottish Highlands. High-quality furnishings and accessories provide ultimate comfort and practicality, while special finishing touches such as the record player and vinyl collection make your stay here all the more memorable.

Here, around a forty-five-minute drive from Aberdeen, you'll be nestled along with a small collection of cabins and cottages inside a vast private forest – far from the madding crowd. Perfect for lovers of hiking, cycling and wild swimming, there's even a range of bushcraft and wild wellness classes to choose from, run on-site by trained instructors.

The home itself is a cleverly converted hayloft, with a covered outside area and accommodation over two floors. Crucially, the living room is on the top floor, taking full advantage of the superb views. Styled to perfection with a mix of deep tones, fun artwork and comfy furniture, it's a surprisingly modern space that wouldn't look out of place in any major city. And your eyes aren't deceiving you; there really is a bright pink second bedroom. It's the addition of a log burner and the odd vintage milking stool that really ground this place in its stunning surroundings.

The site has quite a few surprises in store too. There's a beautifully dressed bring-your-own-bottle pub for socialising with the other guests, a veggie garden and clutch of hens, plus a luxurious wood-fired sauna to relax your aching muscles after a day hiking. And there's an excellent shop on the site, so although you may be a fifteen-minute drive from Banchory and thirty-five from the coast at Stonehaven, you're unlikely to run out of the essentials with plenty of local produce on hand.

Set in an estate of 15,000 acres, surrounded by forest and moorland on the banks of the River Dye, you'll find this ancient, stone-built cottage. For centuries it was an inn, and troops rested here before going to battle in the Jacobite Rebellion nearly 300 years ago. 

After a long walk around the grounds, have a soak in the wood-fired Swedish hot tub, then grill some local, fresh produce on the Big Green Egg barbecue (loved by Michelin chefs). There's a shared sauna (fired by wood too) and an outdoor cold shower for afterwards – you'll find it set within the trees, beside the vegetable garden. Pick some veggies (or your lovely hosts can pick to order for you) to take back to the cottage. You can get fresh eggs from the shop here too. 

Back at your home, put some vinyl on the record player and chill out or take in the fabulous views. There's a mixture of antique and modern furniture, gorgeous fabrics and quirky items – your hosts have lavished lots of attention to detail on this place. There's an artist's studio located outside too. It's no wonder this home was featured in the top twenty-five UK cottages in The Times.

There are plenty of walks to enjoy right from your doorstep, or further afield, history lovers can head to Dunnottar Castle, just over a thirty-minute drive away. It's around the same distance to Stonehaven, a small and picturesque fishing harbour, while Balmoral Castle, open to the public at certain times of the year, is just over a forty-minute ride.
