On cool nights, cosy up by the wood-burning stove and play board games by firelight or stream your favourite films as you sink into the sofa. The patio area of the private walled garden is the perfect place to sip coffee out of the wind in the morning and glasses of wine in the afternoon when the sun emerges from behind the building and warms the stones. Of course, you could spend all day wandering the moors around the home, and the coast is only a short drive away. Dating back over 170 years, this beautiful home in the Scottish Borders was updated in 1870 to take on the Scottish Baronial features that gave it its fairytale castle look, but it was only in the late 70s that the incredible vaulted ceiling was discovered and the mezzanine was added to update the home to what it is today. Of course there has been modernisation since to give it the contemporary, but homely, feel and the result is an ambient, open space that encourages rest and relaxation. 

With the windows stretching up to towards the ceiling, there’s plenty of natural light and bookworms will rejoice to find a little home library on the mezzanine where they’re able to curl up with any of the good books on offer. Look out over the lounge from up there and when you get a little cold, head down to kindle the fireplace so you can watch the flames dance between every turn of the page. 

Musicians can retire to the piano room to hone their skills or entertain the rest of the family in style, but not before sitting down for dinner at the chunky oak table. 

Take to the garden as a group, or in isolation, and walk along the sloping paths as you breathe in the fragrant scents of apple, plum and flowering cherry trees of the orchard. You can also do this from the outdoor bench as you nibble on shortbread. 

With a bike shed on site, why not bring along bicycles so you can head out to explore the Borders on two wheels. The home itself oozes a connection to the sea and the sandy bays that surround it – from the lush blues of the furnishings to the decorative touches.

Being located on the edge of historic Bamburgh, in the small village of Waren Mill, means you can enjoy long, quiet walks and energetic hikes through the countryside and along the coast here. A trip to Bamburgh Castle followed by a stroll along Bamburgh's sandy shores is a must. It takes five-minutes to drive here and you can easily while away hours marveling at the scenery. If you watched The Last Kingdom on Netflix, then you may just recognise the castle – it's pretty iconic to the storyline! Going slightly further afield, Northumbria National Park can be reached within thirty-minutes, and here you'll find beautiful walks amongst the lush countryside.

Charming Scottish escapes don’t get much more charming than this cottage. It’s tucked away amid the cobbled causeways of pretty Culross, a 17th-century town that’s been used as a filming location for Outlander. On your way to the cottage, you might pass by the pier, where you can breathe in the bracing air from the Firth of Forth and take in the view. 

Once you step through the door of the cottage, you’ll feel a million miles from your ordinary life – R&R is in the air. There’s an enchanting mix of the old and new here, with vintage furniture and original artwork blending in with modern amenities and every luxury you might need. You can spend your days exploring the area and your evenings curled up by the fire with a dram from the honesty bar. We’d stay closer to home though, strolling through Culross in the mornings and devouring books in the reading nook at the cottage in the afternoon. This is a dreamy place to call home, even for a few days.

The market town of Cupar is a bustling area where ancient monuments collide with vibrant, modern high streets. A fifteen-minute drive from St Andrews, where you can play eighteen holes at the ‘Home of Golf’, you’ll need a home where you can hang up your clubs after a long day. Six minutes on foot from Cupar station, this unique building has historic tales to tell. Dating from 1815, this was the town council’s Burgh Chambers, where important decisions and important people were commonplace inside its walls. But today, you can play the VIP role, as a guest in this vast apartment.

Upon entering the grand living space, you’ll be in awe of its magnificent, period interiors. Transporting you back in time, every piece of furniture has been carefully selected with the help of a Scottish furniture expert, with key Georgian pieces and others made by local artisans. A luxe colour scheme of olive green and rich mahogany flooring is illuminated by one of the grandest set of bay windows you could imagine. Dine below the chandeliers before heading off to slumber in one of two unique bedrooms, with wooden walls, brass bed frames, and original sash windows.

A great spot for keen walkers and beach lovers, it's just a few minutes drive to the coast (the beach is 2 miles away) and even less to the castle itself. Set in a quiet farming hamlet, you'll have peace and quiet, as well as the local amenities, pubs and cafes just a few minutes away.

If you’d like to expend some energy, embark on a hike to Roxburgh – the walk begins at Kelso Abbey and takes around an hour and twenty minutes.

Bamburgh’s location on the Northumberland Coast makes it splendid for a trip out on the water, just as much as fish and chips on the shore. Between the dunes and the green perimeter of this tiny town, your house sits pretty at just over half a mile from Bamburgh Beach and its famed castle. But if you choose sea over the land, you’ll be well looked after – this town is home of Victorian maritime heroine Grace Darling.

While this fabulous holiday home is certainly on land, there are still nods to the coast. Grey wooden slats on the exterior are reminiscent of a traditional wooden rowboat, while the front door even features a perfectly round porthole. You can admire it from the outside while sitting on your patio with a chilled bottle of fizz, or on the lush lawn surrounded by a picnic and a few G&Ts. And there’s even more admiring to do inside.

We love the elegant interiors – a striking scene upon entering the lounge. White beams, dark hardwood floors, and Scandi-style furniture set a modern tone. Located in east-central Scotland, Fife is only a forty-minute drive from Edinburgh and an hour to Glasgow, but far enough away to feel secluded. Drive out if you’re looking to explore the cities, but we can’t promise you that you’d want to leave this home once you’ve settled in. Surrounded by trees and green slopes, this place is bright and modern, but still oozing with the potential for optimal comfort. Light the wood-burning stove, claim your spot on the plush sofa and let it envelop you as you let go of all the tension you’ve been holding onto. If you have to leave, stay connected to nature by visiting the Lochore Meadows, or stroll through the Townhill Wood where you’ll encounter century-old trees. Cleish Castle is an eleven-minute drive away, with Locleven Castle being just a couple of minutes more. Head to the local golf course, eight-minutes from here, to play a round or two, or take to the loch for waterboarding. In between, pop in at Genaro’s Fish Bar or The Village Inn for a bite to eat.
