Tailor-made for two, this tranquil cottage promises a romantic retreat and true escape from it all. Set on an estate, you can wander the landscaped grounds at your leisure. Feeling a little more adventurous? Hire an e-mountain bike and take to the estate’s twenty kilometres of trails or head out to hike the Pentland Hills, instead. Back home, the fireplace and rolltop bath are a warming sight after a day of exploring, but we think you’ll be tempted to relax outdoors on the private terrace. A cedar hot tub, outdoor fireplace, and nature surrounding you – what’s not to love?

Scottish Spirit

This rustic, 17th-century mill has been turned into a luxury nook in the Scottish Borders. You can see the old but still operating waterwheel, contrasted against the roses and flowering lavender on the old miller's house next door. A wood-burning stove sits are the heart of the home, keeping things cosy warm in winter (your host will leave detailed instructions on how to light it so you’ll become an expert). The classy, aubergine-purple kitchen is well stocked with artisan crockery and everything you need to cook up a holiday meal. The mill’s original mezzanine floor has been converted into a plush bedroom with a roll-top bath. Heading outside, you’ll find a small, private woodland garden with table and chairs. Exploring the rest of the old mill site you might spot owls and hedgehogs in the forest, heron and otters by the millpond and acquaint yourself with the friendly resident sheep. Heading into the small village of Lauder, three miles away, you’ll find a handful of craft shops, coffee shops and a local deli too.  

The Old Mill House

This Grade II-listed cottage sits on the grounds of a countryside estate in the heart of rural Northumberland, with Berwick Upon Tweed and the Scottish Borders on your doorstep. Despite the age of the building, inside, the home is equipped with all the mod cons, including reliable wi-fi. The lounge is bright and beautiful, with an atmospheric open fire adding to the cosy atmosphere. The kitchen is equipped with everything you could need to whip up family feasts, while the quaint bedrooms have beautiful antique furniture and lovely artwork, and the twin room boasts an en-suite bathroom with a shower. Explore the surrounding area, and you'll discover several nearby pubs and an excellent restaurant within a few miles of the lodge. Why not forego the need for a designated driver and walk there for a hearty pub lunch before rambling home and kicking off your boots in the utility room, and settling in by the fire. Slightly further afield, explore Northumberland's stunning coastline and breathtaking waterside walks. Visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, twenty miles away, or Bamburgh Castle, another six miles down the coast. Alternatively, visit Berwick-upon-Tweed, England's most northerly town is a fifteen-minute drive away.

Melkington Lodge

Featuring on “most stylish stays in the UK” lists, this 1960s home sits within acres of walled gardens, landscaped in the 18th century and built by Napoleonic prisoners of war. Mid-century on the outside, the interior is an ode to decadent manor homes with a vast library of books, oil paintings of the Dalrymple family and collections of private artefacts that should be in a museum. You won’t find any “don’t touch” signs though – guests are encouraged to pick fruit and veg from the kitchen garden, rack up a game of snooker in the games room and make use of the grand fireplaces with wood from the neighbouring forest provided. The coastal golf town of North Berwick is a ten-minute drive away and you can practice your pitching on the golf pitching range in the garden. 

The Laird's Garden

Escape to the rural idyll of farmhouse life at this cosy cottage in the Lauderdale Hills. It’s on a working farm, where the sheep have been tended to by the same family for generations and you can ramble across hilltops and country lanes straight from your doorstep. Head to the Carfraemill Hotel for a hearty meal, a three-minute drive or a twenty-minute walk away. Or, take a day trip to Edinburgh, forty minutes by car. The view from the cottage garden is stunning, looking out over the rolling hills and patchwork fields as far as the eye can see. Inside, you’ll find a farmhouse vibe with modern luxuries – a range-style gas cooker in the kitchen and a solid wood dining table for the whole group. The living room is a cosy spot in twilight pink, with an ornamental fireplace. Spacious, pastel bedrooms in the eaves are the perfect end to a day in the countryside.   

Flock Of Sheep

Castaway and escape the outside world at this picture-perfect period cottage squirrelled away on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, just a few miles off the Northumberland coast. Cut off twice daily from the mainland with the fast-moving tides of the North Sea, the island has a truly magical feel. Spend your days spotting seals sunning themselves on the coastline or bobbing through the waters. Stretch your legs with bracing walks along the vast unspoilt sandy shores – Coves Haven beach on the northern side of Holy Island is gloriously secluded. And soak up the historical splendour of the circa. 1550 Lindisfarne Castle rising from the rock face.

When it's time to rest up at home, the charms of this cottage are hard to resist, with a wood-burning stove to nestle up beside and exposed beams and stonework bringing all the period allure. When thoughts turn to food, there's everything you could need to rustle up a bite to eat in the shaker-style kitchen – or skip cooking and head to the local pub, just a few minute's walk from your door. 

When it's time to say adieu, leaving this island haven is easier than you'd think. Time the tides right, and you'll be over the causeway and back on dry land in no time – the main Northumberland coast is just a few miles away.

The Island Home

If you’re seeking an escape back to nature that’s a perfect fit for two, it’s time to stop scrolling. We love this former Porters’ Lodge, packed full of character and inviting its guests to unwind. You’ll find this home set on an estate, where you can enjoy the landscaped grounds at your leisure – if you’re not too busy relaxing in your private cedar hot tub, that is. Locally, a hike up the Pentland Hills is a must, and for those seeking a city fix, Edinburgh is a thirty-minute drive away. 

Brambled Bliss

On the outside, this 18th-century barn conversion is rustic as can be. But step through the door and you'll be transported into a serene Scandinavian-inspired space – appropriate, given guests enjoy a private session in the shared Finnish sauna. The wood-burning stove, replete with a supply of logs, is the perfect tonic after a brisk stroll through the glens of the Pentland Hills Regional Park, and the kitchen provides everything you need for dinner. You'll need a car here, as it's a mile from the nearest road and a short drive from Penicuik – but the parking spot makes this a breeze. Just note there are a few other cottages on-site, so you may bump into other guests from time to time.

Highland Hymn

This period home is a great choice for those wanting a peaceful base from which to explore Edinburgh. Located in the leafy suburb of Eskbank, you’ll find a country park and riverside walks within strolling distance, yet you’re only a thirty-minute drive from the city centre. Or if you want to leave the car at home, just jump on a bus or train. The home itself has plenty to offer a family or group of friends. There’s a games room to keep the kids amused, a sun room to relax in, and a private garden for warmer days.

The Garden's Outlook

Once the home to the estate’s Head Gardener, this Midlothian home is the perfect bolthole for a family on a back-to-nature retreat. We love the sense of history this home offers, along with all the modern touches you’d want for a relaxing stay. The cedar hot tub is sure to be a hit with all, while the outdoor fireplace is the ideal spot to unwind with a tipple to share tales from the day. With 3,100 hectares to explore, you’ll never be bored here – but if you fancy a change of scene, head to the Pentland Hills or hop in the car for a trip to Edinburgh, thirty minutes away. 

Scottish Tranquillity

Dating back to 1703, this former millhouse building has the charming appearance of a traditional country house, while the modern interiors and luxurious home comforts create an endlessly relaxing stay for large groups of friends or extended families looking to explore Edinburgh. Using the original raw materials of stone and wood to echo its heritage, and yet keeping things sleek and sophisticated with plenty of contemporary touches, the ground-floor sunroom is perhaps the best example of this beautifully balanced home. With glass on three sides of the room, you can enjoy the stunning garden view as natural light pours into this cosy hideaway. Pour yourself a wee dram from the characterful bar room with furniture, paintings and art objects hand-picked by the host herself, and head out and explore over 3.5 acres of the private gardens. Gather the troops for an alfresco lunch on the sun-dappled patio or for the ultimate R&R take a gentle soak in the swim spa hot tub – our favourite spot to sip bubbly. This can be the perfect place to fit in your morning exercise too – partake in an outdoor pilates class around the spa. In fact, whether you're looking to book a fitness session, an art class or a guided tour around Edinburgh Castle (less than a half-hour drive away), your host kindly takes care of everything, so you can enjoy a well-deserved break. 

Sunshine on The Esk

Nestled on a 3,100-hectare estate, this Grade A Listed lodge has tranquillity running through its core. It’s an ideal base if you dream of being surrounded by nature while enjoying the comforts of modern life. Spend your days in the private hot tub or unwinding by the outdoor fireplace – just the spot as the stars break out above. With landscaped grounds, you can stroll in the fresh air to your heart’s content – or for a change of scenery, we recommend hiking the Pentland Hills instead.
