Housed in a former brewery from the 1800s, this cool home nods to its past while dazzling with modern comforts and contemporary style. It should be noted that the home's standout location does attract a number of tourists, so if you're looking for some peace and privacy it might not be for you. A wander up the Royal Mile will lead you to imposing Edinburgh Castle in just over ten minutes, where you can walk in the footsteps of Scotland's ancient kings and queens. Or, take a hike up nearby Arthur's Seat for the very best views over the city – you won't be disappointed.

Just over a twenty-minute walk from the heart and soul of the Old Town – Edinburgh Castle – the New Town has quite a different vibe. You’ll find Georgian architecture nearly everywhere you turn, and historic tenement buildings lining the streets as you head towards Canonmills. While these stone structures might look similar from the outside, we can guarantee you'll find eclectic homes within. This flat is no exception. The owner is a local artist, whose creative interior design choices are evident throughout. You’ll find her charming, abstract artwork on display in various rooms, as well as brightly-coloured walls, quirky tablecloth prints, antique furniture, and unique lamps on ornate cabinets. Our favourite spot has to be the lounge – this yellow room is full of character and old-world charm. Light up the fire and gather everyone round for a board game on a rainy day in this sumptuous space. Or at dusk, it could equally serve as a plush pad for an impromptu whisky-tasting session. While you sip on single malts, have the host arrange for a private chef to come over and handle dinner. You are on holiday after all.

An Seòmar Buidhe

The Royal Mile stretches from the hilly city centre, right down to the even larger hills of the Crags and Arthur’s Seat (Edinburgh’s very own extinct volcano). And just six minutes from the edge of this ancient parkland, this modern home is a rather delightful contrast. The interiors are very industrial, but you’ll still find little touches of luxury. We love the lighting fixtures in the lounge and bedrooms, a web of black cords and hanging bulbs which cast a soft glow. Matching this are black metal frames on the door, shower, and bed, as well as dining chairs in the living space. Overall, this flat has a warehouse vibe which feels minimalist yet cosy, ideal for coming home to after witnessing a city steeped in history. Wander uphill after your morning coffee and stop in for some brunch on the High Street, just seven minutes away. Keep on heading to the top of this iconic mile to reach Edinburgh Castle. At just a thirteen-minute walk from home, your descent should include a stop at a traditional pub for a dram of whisky or a pint.

In a lovely part of Stockbridge with plenty of shops and cafes just a short walk away, this townhouse feels like an excellent family home. The living room benefits from a big bay window and high ceilings, but is made to feel innately snug thanks to tartan chairs and faux-fur throws. The kitchen is remarkable in an entirely different way, with loads of space and a pretty professional set-up meaning it will appeal to any budding chef. Elsewhere, we like the stained glass windows in the bathroom inspired perhaps inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh — let's not go into his Glaswegian connection here — as well as the pleasantly landscaped garden with seating should the sunshine break through the clouds during your stay. If it doesn't, that's no bother because there's plenty to do nearby — the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is just over a quarter of an hour walk away, while the equally close by streets of Dean Village are a treat to wander about.

Take in the wonderful views over the Royal Mile towards Arthur's Seat from inside this charming apartment, housed in a traditional Old Town building. We love the character features here, such as the sash windows and exposed stone walls. This home is perfect for a couple or a solo traveller wanting to easily explore Edinburgh on foot.

The location is fabulous – situated near the top of the Royal Mile, it's just over a five-minute walk to Edinburgh Castle. It's the same walking distance to The Scotch Whisky Experience, where you can discover the history of Scotland's national drink. Just over a fifteen-minute stroll, on the other hand, will take you to the Scottish Parliament building and the majestic Palace of Holyroodhouse. There's so much on your doorstep you'll need to book another stay to fit it all in.

This apartment is just a short stroll from The Meadows, perfect for a picnic or for the children to play. We should note that the third bedroom is off the main bedroom and is a small box room with a single bed, but it’s okay for a child. The leather sofa is a great spot to curl up with a scotch, while the desk and high-speed wi-fi are ideal if you're in town on business. Keep in mind that the first floor is only accessible by stairs and free parking isn't provided – not dealbreakers though if you're keen to be in the heart of the city.
