Cook up neeps and tatties (turnips and potatoes, for the uninitiated) in the large kitchen corner, which comes with everything you need, hidden behind sleek, white cupboard doors. Serve up at the table in the sunny bay window with a view straight to the castle. After a tough hike up Arthur's Seat, freshen up using the Bulgari toiletries in the bathroom and sink into your sumptuous tufted bed. Just note it's about 90 steps to reach this apartment, so we suggest packing light.

Tucked in Edinburgh’s New Town, it’s less than a ten-minute walk to iconic sights like Edinburgh Castle and you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to local restaurants, cafes and shops. You’ll also find great public transport links with Waverley train station within easy reach. It’s worth noting the apartment is on the third floor with steep stairs to the entrance, but once inside you'll find a welcoming home. The rooms are family-friendly and the living room is perfect for cosy movie nights.

We love the lighting fixtures in the lounge and bedrooms, a web of black cords and hanging bulbs which cast a soft glow. Matching this are black metal frames on the door, shower, and bed, as well as dining chairs in the living space. Overall, this flat has a warehouse vibe which feels minimalist yet cosy, ideal for coming home to after witnessing a city steeped in history. Wander uphill after your morning coffee and stop in for some brunch on the High Street, just seven minutes away. Keep on heading to the top of this iconic mile to reach Edinburgh Castle. At just a thirteen-minute walk from home, your descent should include a stop at a traditional pub for a dram of whisky or a pint.

As you’re just a six-minute walk from the edge of Holyrood Park, you’ve got an enormous green space to explore. Edinburgh city centre and all its landmarks are only a twenty-minute drive away, but you'll have excellent walks, the Seven Hills viewpoint, and leafy parks practically on your doorstep. Better still, a private front garden here will surely be a hit when the sun is out. It's the perfect spot to wind down in the evenings, though the light-filled living area is also a fine place to relax. The bedrooms are a little snug, but we think it does the job for a laid-back stay on the outskirts of the city.

George Street has its own rich history, originally built as "the principal street" of the New Town. The neighbouring townhouses are architectural marvels. It’s just an eight-minute walk to the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and Princes Street Gardens are only thirteen minutes away. This apartment is just a short stroll from The Meadows, perfect for a picnic or for the children to play. Housed in a traditional stone Victorian building, you’ll find period features such as bay windows inside this home. We should note that the third bedroom is off the main bedroom and is a small box room with a single bed, but it’s okay for a child. This place is ideal for a family looking to enjoy all that this wonderful city has to offer.

Just over a twenty-minute walk from the heart and soul of the Old Town – Edinburgh Castle – the New Town has quite a different vibe. You’ll find Georgian architecture nearly everywhere you turn, and historic tenement buildings lining the streets as you head towards Canonmills. While these stone structures might look similar from the outside, we can guarantee you'll find eclectic homes within. This flat is no exception. The owner is a local artist, whose creative interior design choices are evident throughout. You’ll find her charming, abstract artwork on display in various rooms, as well as brightly-coloured walls, quirky tablecloth prints, antique furniture, and unique lamps on ornate cabinets. Our favourite spot has to be the lounge – this yellow room is full of character and old-world charm. Light up the fire and gather everyone round for a board game on a rainy day in this sumptuous space. Or at dusk, it could equally serve as a plush pad for an impromptu whisky-tasting session. While you sip on single malts, have the host arrange for a private chef to come over and handle dinner. You are on holiday after all.

At the top of Calton Hill, you'll have some truly breathtaking views from this historical home. The National Gallery is next door and the rest of the city is a short walk away, easily making up for the lack of parking. It should be noted that the home's standout location does attract a number of tourists, so if you're looking for some peace and privacy it might not be for you. That said, the main bedroom enjoys an en-suite with a luxurious standalone bathtub, and there's outdoor seating to make the most of this stunning location.

In a lovely part of Stockbridge with plenty of shops and cafes just a short walk away, this townhouse feels like an excellent family home. The living room benefits from a big bay window and high ceilings, but is made to feel innately snug thanks to tartan chairs and faux-fur throws. The kitchen is remarkable in an entirely different way, with loads of space and a pretty professional set-up meaning it will appeal to any budding chef. Elsewhere, we like the stained glass windows in the bathroom inspired perhaps inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh — let's not go into his Glaswegian connection here — as well as the pleasantly landscaped garden with seating should the sunshine break through the clouds during your stay. If it doesn't, that's no bother because there's plenty to do nearby — the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is just over a quarter of an hour walk away, while the equally close by streets of Dean Village are a treat to wander about.

You'll find this apartment right in the heart of Edinburgh's historic Old Town. As far as locations go, you can't get much better – it's just a two-minute walk to the Royal Mile, surrounded by quirky shops, famous pubs and cosy cafes. Twenty minutes away is Edinburgh Castle, and just a little further, the buzzing boutiques and restaurants in New Town. Enjoy leisurely strolls around Holyrood Park in the mornings (five minutes on foot), climbing to the top of Arthur's Seat for stunning views across the city. When you're not out exploring, this cosy apartment has vistas of its own – as you nibble on breakfast or tuck into a home-cooked meal at the dining table, you can spot Arthur's Seat and the Salisbury Crags in the distance. Though it’s not just about the views – the living room's curves, vintage photography and statement armchairs ensure a stay in style. Breakfasting below the huge, arched window in the sunlight is another big plus. Heading out, the New Town is on your doorstep and with it, the buzz of a city you'll never want to leave.

Sea And Planets

Not far from Edinburgh Castle, this apartment is in a great spot, close enough to the tourist sights but away from the crush of the Royal Mile. Despite this enviable location, it’s a surprisingly big place, and everything feels very high end. The interiors are relaxed without being too casual — traditional touches, such as the tan leather sofas and the original marble fireplace, mix well with more contemporary flourishes like the glass dining table and the plethora of artwork on display. We’d also be remiss not to mention the wonderful view of the castle, which can be reached in ten minutes on foot. Even closer is the greenery of Princes Street Garden, while there are shops and restaurants galore on nearby George Street.
