It boasts Edinburgh Castle views from the entrance and a private outdoor space, complete with a gas fireplace and sofas. It's the perfect place for pre-theatre drinks or a wee dram at the end of the night. You may even be lucky enough to see one of the fireworks displays light up the sky around the castle.

Inside, it's been freshly renovated by one of Scotland's leading interior designers. A lot of attention to detail has been lavished on this home. We adore the custom wallpaper, designer accessories, plush velvet seating and drapes, as well as the contemporary artworks by Scottish and New York artists. All in all, this creates a sumptuous, five-star boutique suite feel. There’s even a secret extra outdoor room furnished with tartan throws and puffin cushions – the ideal spot for reading a book.

The location is as impressive as this apartment. It's a three-minute stroll to both Princes Street and the Lyceum Theatre, while Usher Hall, which has hosted concerts and events since 1914, is a mere one-minute saunter. While these stone structures might look similar from the outside, we can guarantee you'll find eclectic homes within. This flat is no exception. The owner is a local artist, whose creative interior design choices are evident throughout. You’ll find her charming, abstract artwork on display in various rooms, as well as brightly-coloured walls, quirky tablecloth prints, antique furniture, and unique lamps on ornate cabinets. Our favourite spot has to be the lounge – this yellow room is full of character and old-world charm. Light up the fire and gather everyone round for a board game on a rainy day in this sumptuous space. Or at dusk, it could equally serve as a plush pad for an impromptu whisky-tasting session. While you sip on single malts, have the host arrange for a private chef to come over and handle dinner. You are on holiday after all.

Overall, this flat has a warehouse vibe which feels minimalist yet cosy, ideal for coming home to after witnessing a city steeped in history. We have to say we love this home’s spacious living room with its character features and large sash windows. Another highlight is the bathrooms with their freestanding bathtubs. There’s a seating area in the dining room, too, which also has a log burner. This home is perfect for families or friends wanting easy access to all that this wonderful city has to offer.

In a lovely part of Stockbridge with plenty of shops and cafes just a short walk away, this townhouse feels like an excellent family home. The living room benefits from a big bay window and high ceilings, but is made to feel innately snug thanks to tartan chairs and faux-fur throws. The kitchen is remarkable in an entirely different way, with loads of space and a pretty professional set-up meaning it will appeal to any budding chef. Elsewhere, we like the stained glass windows in the bathroom inspired perhaps inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh — let's not go into his Glaswegian connection here — as well as the pleasantly landscaped garden with seating should the sunshine break through the clouds during your stay. If it doesn't, that's no bother because there's plenty to do nearby — the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is just over a quarter of an hour walk away, while the equally close by streets of Dean Village are a treat to wander about.

A Wee Dram

Cosy and charming, this first-floor apartment boasts views of Edinburgh Castle. Alongside the historic panoramas, we love the sense of space here – three sumptuous bedrooms, a large kitchen, and a comfortable lounge provide ample room for family gatherings. There's even a small workspace if you're travelling on business. And, of course, the location is brilliant. You'll be a five-minute walk from buzzing Princes Street, while the Royal Mile and other Old Town attractions are just a bit further. Plan on driving? While no allocated parking is provided, a public car park is just across the street.

Castle Looming

Sitting within one of Edinburgh's many Georgian buildings, this loft apartment doesn't have the period features you might expect from the handsome exterior, but it's still easy on the eye nevertheless. Ideally, it could do with another bathroom, but that's nitpicking really. One thing we especially like is that the neighbourhood is a little more residential than the touristy centre, but you're still within walking distance of many of the city's attractions – the castle and old town are both around half an hour's walk, for instance.

Happy New Year

Cosy and comfortable, this basement-level apartment is an excellent option for couples. Inside, there's a well-appointed kitchen, a light-filled living area, and a bedroom with a small workspace. You'll also have the added bonus of a communal garden, where you can enjoy a glass of Scotch in the sunshine. But what we love the most here is the location. Set in bustling New Town, you'll find shops, pubs, and restaurants nearby. Further afield, but still easily reached on foot, is picturesque Old Town, while Stockbridge and Dean Village are also within easy reach.

New Town Cool

With this Buckstone cottage, you get the best of both worlds. Edinburgh city centre and all its landmarks are only a twenty-minute drive away, but you'll have excellent walks, the Seven Hills viewpoint, and leafy parks practically on your doorstep. Better still, a private front garden here will surely be a hit when the sun is out. It's the perfect spot to wind down in the evenings, though the light-filled living area is also a fine place to relax. The bedrooms are a little snug, but we think it does the job for a laid-back stay on the outskirts of the city.

Cherry Cask

Nestled in the New Town, this stylish apartment grants you easy access to the city's best sights. Feel like staying beside Princes Street, just a thirteen-minute stroll from Edinburgh Castle? You'll have to take the stairs to reach the second floor, but we love how the high ceilings and large-scale windows create a roomy retreat indoors. Perfect for romantic getaways, the main suite offers a freestanding bathtub for post-adventure relaxation. Bedroom two welcomes a third guest, plus kid-friendly travel equipment is available to families. 

Elegant Retreat

Housed in a former brewery from the 1800s, this cool home nods to its past while dazzling with modern comforts and contemporary style. A monochrome palette gives it a sleek look, with wood and leather accents giving it a characterful industrial edge. We love the Crittall doors in the living room that lead to a beautifully dressed bed, behind which a sketch-style mural hints at the home’s heritage. When you’re not kicking back on the sofa with a cold beer, catching up on work at the desk or enjoying luxurious soaks under the rainfall shower, go out and explore your surroundings. Your Old Town neighbourhood is full of narrow alleys where museums, shops and restaurants all vie for your attention, while Calton Hill (a ten-minute walk away) offers impressive views over the entire city. With the Royal Mile a seven-minute stroll away and Edinburgh Castle reachable in thirteen minutes on foot, you couldn’t be better placed to experience the best that the city has to offer.
